Simply Kwame...
Since things will start getting a little more intense with practice tomorrow, I thought that barring some late breaking news, we'd take you into the weekend with this video. HUGE props to armchar middle distance runner for finding this over at 49ersNews.com and posting it in our all-time OT #2 post. Since I'm sure there are plenty of folks who missed out on this, I thought it was worth moving to the front page.
This rolled around YouTube a year or two ago and then disappeared. Thankfully, IT'S BACK! I realize there were plenty of bad players surrounding Kwame Harris, but in the end, this is all about Kwame. It's simply Kwame, and man is he bad.

Good times.
The 49ers just don’t draft busts like him anymore :(

Man, That was bad
Not just Harris, but the whole Line. No wonder Smith can back the next season with a bad arm and how did Gore ever run for 1600 yards. I’m hoping the OL will show a HUGH improvement over the last 5 years or pity the QB’s, Whoever left standing.

Pro Smith video more than anti-Kwamster
I have much more sympathy for Smith after watching that. How demoralizing it must have been for the whole team to have so many successful plays called back.

Horrible
God Kwame Harris is amazingly bad for being a first rounder! I had almost forgot how bad, almost makes me think half of the reason things turned out so poorly first time around for Alex Smith was because Kwame couldn’t block a practice dummy.

Dude,
that was bad for being an any round…

That was bad for high school.
Alright, maybe okay for high school.

That would be dominant in high school.
Size alone would probably make him one of the more sought-after prospects in his local region.

I was joking.
There was a reason he was a first-round pick after all, his size and run blocking ability.

That vidio truely highlighted his blocking abiltiy...
Damn,, no wonder our brain trust picked him,, all that raw talent. What a blocker…

I don't know how anyone could watch that and not feel bad for Smith.
Every time Kwame went back to block he looked like he was hoping the guy would run at him instead of trying to stay with the guy.
by Mullester on Jul 31, 2009 3:18 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I agree.
Seriously, that vid made me rethink Smith’s career.

i guess i forgot
how good alex smith looked at times, considering the huge void of talent around him. this video just may have swayed me to root for him in camp over Hill.
That's what she said.
by MTNA2RC on Jul 31, 2009 3:43 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Alex Smith good?
seriously, he was getting hit after every throw yet still managing to throw the ball down field. I will not call him great but he did show a lot of evasiveness in the pocket and an ability to throw on the run.
by 49seattle on Jul 31, 2009 3:48 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Though Smith has his own problems in the video independ of Harris (like the extremely long backpedal and tendency to do that when it's time to step up in the pocket),
that does show a lot about how abysmal the line was.

It seems like Hill has the same problem with the long backpedal, too. I also agree that Smith seemed to run himself backwards a little too often. I’m can’t remember if that was only happening on screen plays or not.

thoughts...
I agree with everyone here. I can’t believe how bad Harris was. I totally forgot. The whole line for that matter. I also forgot how good Smith could be. He had a great arm and is pretty damn fast for a QB. That video made me do two things….1. throw up. 2. start rooting for Smith to win QB competition.

Come on guys, don't you think that you are being a little harsh...
Kwame did recover one fumble that he allowed…
He was always there chasing the guy down that just put the swim move on him. Granted it often resulted in him tackling Smith as well, but I give him an A for effort.
The cake is a lie.

Some bad, bad games that I don't want to remember
Alex Smith was seriously thrown to the wolves, assisted by Harris. Here’s a thought, never draft any professional player named Kwame (Brown and Harris) in the 1st round – guaranteed epic busts.

To be Fair
Did you see the score on some of those highlights? The 49ers were down an average 3 touchdowns and defenses were letting the dogs loose on the pass rush. Also, a few times Kwame was pushing the defender outside where Alex should have been stepping into the pocket.
Not saying I want him back. At least the musical scores were well chosen.
by bignerd on Jul 31, 2009 4:48 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Uhh??? No.
I don’t care what the score is during any game. Did you miss the part where Kwame got completely spun around or fell down – it happened a few times. Just because their “letting the dogs loose” doesn’t make it okay for him to stink it up.
by Redding49ers on Jul 31, 2009 4:52 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Except the part where a lot of tackles do stink it up under the same circumstance. I’m still more bitter about Barry Sims missing his defender when the game was actually on the line.

I thought the play where the DB dives behind Harris to tackle the ball-carrier was hilarious.
If he had properly engaged, the DB should have been absolutely crushed.

Man was that ugly!
Jesus, Kwame couldn’t pass block to save his life. Terrible footwork and wrong guesses as to where the defender was going to try to go, not to mention how weak he looked when bull-rushed. Watching him chase defenders as they got around him on the way to the QB made me want to cringe. I do remember that he was supposedly better at run-blocking which is probably why he is still in the league. But Pass-block? Heck no.
Someone should send a copy of that to JaMarcus Russell pronto…send shivers thru RaiderFan

I Just Became An Alex Smith Supporter
Anybody who calls Smith a bust should really go back and watch this… poor bastard was setup to fail. -I mean seriously, Kwame, Stone-hands Jackson + Ashley Lelie…
Oh and I’ve been reading medical records, Alex Smith’s shoulder was pretty much crushed into two (under Seahawks linemen), this was a freak accident, and Smith was pretty much keeping that shoulder together with scotch tape… and Nolan had the gall to throw this kid under a bus…
You don’t even have to get your hopes up, the 49ers are already better without Mike Nolan and his “Nolanettes” hanging around. -I knew things were worse (I’ve been watching for so many years, week-in and week-out) but this is disgusting.
This was an era without accountability/direction. -God damn you Mike Nolan.

I thought people going for sacks weren’t allowed to actually hang on like that and had to attempt dragging the QB down.

Something tells me for sure...
That Alex Smith is going to win the job (as the organization is pulling for him to), and he’s going to humiliate Nolan’s big Nickel. D this pre-season on the NFL Network for all eyes to witness.
Jimmy Raye is gonna put his evil rain-slicker on and unleash hell!
by SnakePlissken on Jul 31, 2009 8:35 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I actually think Raye is going to be a fairly ineffective OC,
but now that I’m thinking about it, seeing Smith win shouldn’t surprise anyone, especially if this ‘Shaun Hill sucks in practice and preseason’ hullabaloo is true.

raye should be fine
as long as he doesnt call a fullback run up the gut on the 2 yard line with 4 seconds left in the game when that play had never worked during the season… we should be fine
and i hope he freaking uses gore unlike hostler that idoiot…
by Joshpreet on Jul 31, 2009 8:59 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think the pieces will fall into place
In a nutt-shell Raye will just be calling Norv Turner’s style of conservative/mud-slapping WCO-styled football. -Sometimes it doesn’t take the best playcaller to win a game but the players themselves to execute it to their best instincts/smarts, with everybody playing their roles/parts. Raye’s new offense gives the QB more freedom to think for himself/make the right decisions instead of waiting in the red-zone until the OC decides to call a time-out at the last minute, screwing the entire game up.
It won’t be pretty at first, but it’ll be progress, and just enough to get us where we need to go for now. (As Singletary said within realistic terms, we’re a playoff team now… but miles away from the Superbowl).
by SnakePlissken on Jul 31, 2009 9:10 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
"aid within realistic terms, we’re a playoff team now"
Many people would say the team is miles away from a being a playoff team. Not that I would necessarily agree, but it seems safe to say that an OC with a reputation of orchestrating some pretty stagnant offenses certainly isn’t going to be the factor that finally pushes the team above .500.

You can definitely see Smith’s bad mechanics (he’s come a long way in comparison to last preseason regarding his footwork) but in every lowlight, right when he plants Kwame’s man is already pouncing on him — that’s the equivalent of letting the defender run right past you or not even being on the field to block at all.
