Michael Vick signs 2-year deal with Philadelphia Eagles

FOOCH'S NOTE: This is certainly a FanPost worth moving to the front page.  Let's keep the Vick conversation contained in this one thread.  Also, here's the link mentioned in the comments.

I'd normally be inclined to post this as a FanShot, but I think there will be plenty of FanPost attempts anyway, so I'll just head them all off at the pass.

Watching the Arizona / Pittsburgh exhibition game, I saw ESPN report that Michael Vick has signed with the Eagles. No link that I can find yet, as I think they wanted to break the story on the air, but I'll try to update once a link pops up on the Web.

I don't have too much of an opinion on this. The ESPN guys seem shocked - SHOCKED! - but it seems like a good fit to me. Vick is basically a no-risk proposition for the Eagles. They won't need him before October, anyway, and they don't have to worry about him playing quarterback. If they have a mess with McNabb and Kolb, there's a decent option in Vick.

Otherwise, they can just use him as an electric complement to any other player they want. Want to complement Westbrook? No problem. Want to draw soe coverage to the backfield? Easy. Need a gimmick play? No problem. He doesn't fill a need for them, which is great because there's no guarantee that he could fill a need for anybody, but he gives them depth and lots of options late in the season.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

Ha! My stupid face was google searching!

I should have realized that if ESPN was reporting it on TV, they’d obviously be reporting it online. Duhr.

Make him a RB...

I just think...

he’d be better suited to play RB instead of QB. He has fresh legs and is very agile. Ya never know.

Sure, but

Vick always had fumble issues and carried the ball like a moron when he scrambled. I suppose he could be RB with heavy coaching and I imagine the Eagles will try him out there, but their main insurance for Westbrook is McCoy.

McCoy will be a good spell for Westbrook.

I suppose running the Wildcat would be a good place for Vick to start.

I suspect

I suspect that Thomas Clayton may end up on the Eagles. If so, I hope he’s traded and not picked up on waivers.

by Bob On The Coast on Aug 14, 2009 7:33 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Who in...

… their right mind would trade for a guy who hasn’t made a 53-man roster out of camp in any of his seasons in the NFL? Unless the 49ers seriously consider keeping four or five HBs, no one’s afraid that Clayton won’t be available on waivers.

by sfgfan on Aug 14, 2009 9:20 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Didn't they...

Ask the Eagles about if they were going to take him or not and they said “No” ??

Well I’m really glad that he got signed, and for more than one year! He deserves a second chance like everyone else, and man, was he made example of and hit HARD by this. I hope he does well, though I wished he could have gone to the UFL, that would have made things interesting.

by Poundtherock on Aug 13, 2009 7:10 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

...

Bills, 9ers, Skins, Phins, and Vikes all said no for sure. Didn’t ever see anything about the Eagles turning down the option.

Anyways, your post isn’t a moral argument, it’s a two bit smear piece. You are only arguing your own self-believed morals, which you feel should trump that of American society. No one wants to waste time debating that fallacy.

The testimonies were from guys looking to lessen their sentence

And they too created the same acts. I don’t think they are that important to the circle of life of HUMAN BEINGS, Vck did more time than ALL of this countries 1st time child molesters, so it’s obviously a matter of opinion. I don’t support what he did in anyway, but I think an oppurtunity to get back in the NFL isn’t a sad day for the league. Kind of a sad day in blogging IMO!!

close to a pedophile

You should be ashame for typing that bs. Do you have children? If you do sit them next to your dog and call them equals. Frankly they can’t be that ugly. Now I understand people love their pets and to each his own. That’s right do wht you want with your dog, and it doesn’t bother me what anyone does to an animal when human beings are treated worse. Im sure some of you are tired of me saying this. But this is a HUGE problem with this country, what Vick or his family did to those dogs is their business. Who in their community did it affect? Will anyone become so tormented that they turn to killing sprees, or become rapist? and by the way I hope your heading up protesting for the slap on the wrist that pedophiles receive. I don’t like to see dogs pampered and ride in cars without restraints and they are suppose to be protected. Nobody is protesting to that. A dog dies in an accident and it isn’t considered animal cruelty, this subject is weak and tiresome and there are so many different views that could show animal rights is bs. You buy it do what you want with it as long as tax dollars aren’t spent.

what i dont understand

is how Mike Vick served his jail sentence for his crime, yet people still want to bitch and complain that he’s getting a second chance. Dante Stallworth killed a human being, a father, a provider for a family and spent 23 days in jail for it. 23 days? are you kidding me? 2 years for killing some dogs, 23 days for killing a father and sole provider for a family of children. Sounds fair. IMO Vick served his time and it’s time to move on.

If I'm not mistaken, the majority of Vick's sentence did not stem from the grisly details of the dog-murders,

but rather, running and funding an organized criminal association, Bad Newz Kennels.

He serve time for any reason

It makes no difference whether he served it for animal cruelty/dogfighting, Running from the law, running an illegal organization, or going thru the buffet line one too many times. The fact is he served his time. Some people keep talking like they want to waterboard him , it reminds me of sending your kid to their room and then staying pissed at them afterwards.

m not condoning Vick

or anything like that. What he did was horrible and he deserved to be punished, I guess my problem is how little Stallworth was punished and how little outrage I hear from everyone about it. Non football fans are all up in arms about Vick being reinstated but no one says anything about Stallworth. He killed a man, a husband and father.

Case Law

Even though Stallworth was over the legal drinking limit he committed no moving violation to cause the death. The man he hit was crossing the road illegally. There is a debate to whether Stallworth being sober would have prevented the accidental death at all. According to California state law, Stallworth would be guilty by simply being over the legal drinking limit. According to Florida state law it has to be proven Stallworth committed the driving violation which resulted in injury or death. Florida prosecution didn’t have a good case, thus settled for a reduced prison plea instead of taking a significant chance of losing the case.

Part of Stallworth’s arrangement is that he paid the family a lot of money. The fact that he was a father and a husband and a person is hugely important here. The fact that he was a provider isn’t.

I hate this comment

Disregarding anything about Vick’s value to the 49ers, which is purely a matter of a opinion, your description of San Francisco is deplorable.

Context, people. More context is good. Less context is bad. If you're willing to be reductive, then you're willing to be wrong.

Vick

I agree with howtheyscored on the first part. It’s really unnecessary to make those kind of comments about San Francisco (where I happen to live).

Second, do you really consider Vick a strong QB at this point? We hear some reports from some people about training camp and that’s reason to have signed him? I disagree.

by Fooch on Aug 17, 2009 9:52 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

no

thats not the only reason. he’s looking great so far, according to reports. and i stand by what i said. sf is a city known for homosexuality and ultra liberalism. these same gay/straight animal activist racist liberals value a dog’s life more than a black or latino person’s life. i went to college with these type of “i love hip hop n black people, but i’m really no different from the southern klansmen” pseudo liberal intellectual. its a joke. i don’t condone vick
s actions. vick is an idiot and what he did was stupid. but, vick only killed pit bulls. those abominations deserve what they get anyway. i hate pitbulls, got bit by one, and i’d take a shotgun to a pitbull in a second. those dogs are mentally ill.

i love quoting that eagles fan who said he’d kick a peta member’s a&* if they showed up at an eagles game. this country has become too “feminized” imo
