Ok, so not much happened the 2nd day of practice, except for this...
After making a few asisine comments earlier, it got me to thinking (well sort of) about something, and that would be the blitzkrieg. I ask that you please indulge me.
So, after the media, and fans left the practice facilities today, the after after practice/training began.
I was there for the after after practice, and it was intense, let me tell you the scene was pretty chaotic, as one could imagine when panzers and other glorious weapons of war are at play. No, cameras were allowed, but I was, fortunate enough, however, to sneak out with this, admittedly rudimentary, artist's rendention of what went on behind the scene:

Like I said, the scene was intense, man. It's hard to diagnose excatly what went on, I mean, I'm pretty sure that's an unshaven Justin Smith doing a dang fine job of manning your garden variety Maschinegewehr-34. And I think that is Michael Lewis parachuting in... I don't know, anybody have any observations that I may have missed in the picture? Or better, anyone else got any ideas about the strategy that Singletary and Manusky are gonna dial up?

And there's
Patrick Willis, center frame. Although they mistakenly numbered him 113…

That was his tackle count....
… for the day.

how did I miss that...
…I’m such a moron. So you think it’s pretty safe to say that Willis will lead middle linebackers in sacks in the universe?

Yellow Journalism...
if i’ve ever seen it. some characteristics of yellow journalism taken from wikipedia:
1. often of minor news
2. lavish use of pictures
3. use of faked interviews
4. emphasis on full-color Sunday supplements
5. dramatic sympathy with “underdog”

I do say old chap
this isn’t about stoking the flames of war. I’m just saying…where else did the term blitz come from? Anyways, I just want to see a defense, ala, Eagles ( w/ Jim Johnson), or Steelers (with anybody), I know that’s aiming high but that’s how I do…I guess we do have to crawl before we can walk though…so yeah..

To maybe open up the conversation a bit, didn’t the 49ers actually fare quite a bit better rushing the passer last season when they weren’t blitzing?
I seem to remember this being the case. I can’t find the evidence, though.
My Dave Righetti is better than your Dave Righetti.

I just remember a lackluster pass rush. When they blitzed you could see it coming and usually it was a corner blitz, which is cool, I’ll take what I can get.
Let me ask you something, did you notice a shift in defensive philosophy subsequent to the Singletary take over.

absolutely
Once Nolan left, they started using Manny in the lineup. Hence our defense went from 23rd in the league down to 13

Considering...
… the base defense is a 3-4, it’s pretty safe to bet they were blitzing on almost every down. Unless that 4th man that’s usually a linebacker doesn’t count as a blitz?

I noticed
the defense all together got a lot better once they finally put Manny Lawson into the lineup after Mike Nolan was fired. I think with a healthy D and Manny in there for 16 games, I can foresee us being a top 5 or at least top 10 defense this year.
