Nate Davis?... Yes, Really
I'm sure we have all watched or are planning to soon watch the 49ers Raiders game. If you have watched already, you know that Alex Smith and Shaun hill did about as poorly as one could imagine. If you read barrows article, he claims if dropped passes did not happen Smith could go up to a 69 passer rating. But you cant always blame the receiver for those, not to mention the upside of the If scenario is only a 69 passer rating.
As it was Smith ended with a 4.2 passer rating and Shaun Hill ended with a 50.3. Barrows argues that if Morgan had not made his amazing catch, Shaun Hill may have ended with a glaring 0. Regardless of possible outcomes, this is just abysmal. If we can't pass versus the Raiders and the Broncos, who can we pass against? I guess we will find out all too soon.
On the other side of things however was Nate Davis, ending with a great performance and a 103 passer rating. He showed mobility, the ability to throw with power while on the run and all around solid play. Now of course he was playing against the raiders third or fourthdary so we do not know how he may fare against a true secondary. I honestly think that it may be worth it to give Davis some first team snaps in the upcoming preseason games. There are of course the arguments that he is a rookie and he will make mistakes and so forth, but with the current performance of the quarterbacks what do we have to lose. They seem to be making mistakes without showing any real upside at this point.
It almost makes me think Damon Huard could have an impact... No, let's not get carried away here.
With Nate Davis' upside and his play in the preseason game, I ask you, what do the 49eres have to lose by giving him some first team snaps and seeing if some of his endless potential, could actually be harnessed this season?

oh...
im the only one who voted for huard?…
Couple of thoughts:
First, look, we know that Shaun Hill is better than the player we saw on the field against the Raiders. He’s not the second coming of Joe Montana, but we’ve seen him in real games, games which matter. To discount those games in favor one one bad preseason game is just stupid.
(Smith, meanwhile, is not entitled to the same benefit of the doubt even if you think – as I do – that some of his failures in this game were the fault of his receivers.)
So the benchmark for Davis (or Huard for that matter) isn’t if he comparable to Hill when Hill has a bad preseason game. It’s if he’s comparable to what we already know Hill is capable of doing in the regular season. Hill has done it in enough games to have earned that benefit of the doubt.
Secondly, Davis doesn’t know the offense. His reads aren’t there. He’s not ready. Throwing him in with the first team makes very little sense. He’s not ready. His stats are coming against the other team’s scrubs. Put Davis out of your mind for this season. He’s not ready. Having a guy who doesn’t know what he’s doing out there with the first team will make everybody on the field’s experience less valuable.
The team needs reps together in order to start clicking, and with the third preseason game you usually really narrowing down your options about who’s starting when. It is not the time to put a guy who barely knows what he’s doing in there.
The team needs to bring Davis along the right way – the way they didn’t with Smith. If he doesn’t sniff the field this season that’s just fine. There’s very little to be gained from it and a lot to be lost.

I agree with everything you said but I would like to see if there is some serious up side there or not we know what Hill has to offer decent enough to win some games but do we have a QB that can take us to to Superbowl? If not try to get something for Smith let Huard be the back up and let Davis learn and play if were not in the playoff race!!
You seem to have missed the point:
Ronaldinho writes:

The ‘05 Niners were out of the playoff race (finishing 4-12) and so they threw their No.1 draft pick in there when he wasn’t ready. After a college career in which he was rarely under center, Smith had barely figured out how to drop back when they “let Smith learn and play”—and regardless of whether you think he’s a good QB or not, the result was far from positive.
Davis fell to the 5th round because of reports of a learning disability. So if you’ve got the opportunity to give your QB a redshirt year, why wouldn’t you take it?
And besides all this, the question of whether we have a QB that can take us to the Super Bowl isn’t really the right question to ask; because if the Niners are going to make it there, it’s not going to be on the strength of their QB.
Morgan breaks through in 2009!
First, look, we know that Shaun Hill is better than the player we saw on the field against the Raiders.
What in the world gives you that impression? His performance was slightly below average against a solid pass defense.
Is that not exactly what we expect out of him?
My pessimism goes to the point of suspecting the sincerity of the pessimists.
Hill's career YPA is around 7.
Against the Raiders it was under 3. His worst YPA in a regular-season game was around 5.
In other words, he was less than half as effective as his career average and by far worse than he’s been in any regular season game.
If that’s what you expect out of him, you’re setting the bar way too low.

I just watch the 49ers vs Raiders game for the second time and I was really impressed with Nate Davis. Given that he playedagainst the Raider scrubs, but he was making quick decisions on his throws and did not turn over the ball. Hill is just a quick fix for now at the QB spot and I know that the Niners have two first round picks next year to spend one on a QB. What if they have the QB for the future already in camp? Davis has a great arm and is accurate as can be. Also he comes out of the MAC Conference where they have recently produced some pretty good QB’s like Pennington and Rothlisberger. They have a chance to let Davis sit on the bench and observe and get ready for next year. Just wondering what you guys thought about Davis.

Yes, too soon to award him anything BUT.... He looks like he could be a very good QB in a year or two
"Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, either way, YOU'RE RIGHT !"
Let him develop
He wasn’t even getting reps in practice until this week. Yes, he looked good against the Raiders scrubs but he also only ran the only 10 plays the 49ers staff has taught him. He has to learn the offense before the team can do anything else with him.
I think FOOCH makes a good point....
to hold on to NATE instead of trying to use one of our picks next year for a QB. Just don’t rush it. Work with him and take it slow. I too was extremely pleased with what I have seen from him.
You gotta watch the film
Accurate throws, 70 yard bomb. Very Impressive ! He could very well be the future that leads us back to the SB.

Accuracy during drills is really pretty irrelevant
Smith was great in pre-draft drills. Really, really good.
Impressive video.

I don't think Davis threw nearly enough passes to see much
But he did look good. I hope we keep him over Huard.

I would love
the niners to take their time with Davis, I know it has only been about 3 quarters of play for him but he has looked better than Hill/Smith. I say let Hill and Smith duke it out this next game @ Dallas, maybe a half each to determine the starter for the regular season…..but on the last game @ San Diego let Davis go crazy since he won’t get any game action until next pre-season.
When Davis threw the ball...
…Tears nearly came to my eyes. It has been far too long since I have seen a QB in a 49ers uniform who actually threw the ball like a QB. More than that, there was a sort of ease, an effortless grace about the way the ball came out of his hand. When the game ended, I was shocked by the reality that our rookie QB, learning disabilities, ball grip and all, had not turned the ball over a single time in 2 whole quarters. All of this while leading his team to two touchdowns. I don’t care who he was playing against, the fact is he looked like a genuine QB. Besides, let’s face it: is there any doubt in our minds that he-who-shall-not-be-named could have found a way to turn the ball over, even against Oakland’s scrubs? The fact is we got ourselves a genuine QB here folks, one who apparently isn’t prone to such mistakes as fumbled snaps, overconfidence, lack of pocket presence, or a weak arm. i concur
i’ll be extremely dissapointed if we don’t keep and develop davis into our qb of the future. right now, with the scrubs at qb, we don’t even have a qb of the present.

I see where you're going, but Davis has his warts, too

I quote:
“Davis played the worst game of his career during Ball State’s 42-24 loss to Buffalo in the MAC championship game. Despite passing for 351 yards, he fumbled four times and threw an interception. The Bulls scored touchdowns after each of the fumbles.”

They weren’t all his fault, but it was enough to scare a lot of teams off.
Morgan breaks through in 2009!
I saw someone mention he played with a flu...
and seriously even the most elite of QBs have their bad games. He’s still young and looked nice for a rookie. I think he throws the ball just as good as Stafford and Sanchez who are seen to be the “saviors” of their respective teams.
I severely disagree with the last statement.

Nate Davis seems to have a stronger arm than Sanchez
You disagree with that?
And I hate the way Stafford throws the ball, he was always sailing passes in college and was horribly inconsistent (did you see the capital one bowl? WTF was that?)
by SportsChicken on Aug 30, 2009 12:09 PM PDT up reply actions
I don't think...
… the last statement was just about arm strength, or at least it can be interpreted differently than you did. To a lot of people, throwing a ball “good” has just as much to do with accuracy as it does arm strength.
hahaha
“…Tears nearly came to my eyes. It has been far too long since I have seen a QB in a 49ers uniform who actually threw the ball like a QB.”
I couldnt of said it better myself. He actually throws with confidence. Shit I have confidence in his throws. Alot more then alex or sean.
I hope sean gets hurt, alex throws out his shoulder and he gets the starting job by week 2. Ryan lead the falcons to the playoffs his Rook season. Why cant we have that!!!!
Ryan lead the falcons to the playoffs his Rook season. Why cant we have that!!!!
Because Ryan stayed in college for 5 years and was truly ready for the NFL, they have a zone blocking scheme, and because Roddy White > any 49ers WR.

Uh Oh
Nate Davis is getting some buzz now! We cannot let this guy be on the practice squad. He will get snatched. I can see him buying to the starter job next season. Third and fourth team players yeah but they are still players. I like to see him holding that clipboard and doing handsignals lol.
Cream
Nate Davis
I traded Shaun Hill to Philly for a 5th round selection and Kevin Kolb in my franchise and Alex Smith to San Deigo for Billy Volek and 5th round selection.
I made Nate the starter and have gone on a 4-game win streak.
I wouldn’t recommend trying this at the NFL level just yet, maybe next season.

Not at making Davis the starter, that you got Volek and a 5th for Smith! ;-)

The other coaches got their eyes on Davis
Who wouldn’t want to have this kid on their squad. Granted, he only play for a short time, but MAN, did he look smooth. No doubt that he’s a keeper !!! So how do you work this ?
1. Cut Huard?
2.Trade Smith?
3. Trade Hill?
The only one who has any trade value right now is Smith. What happen if he starts sometime this season and plays poorly, then what would his value be worth? Is it worth trading now for something or lose the chance of getting a decent draft pick?
Any Ideas ??.
Cut Huard.

Cut Huard
It’s a no-brainer. Smith is more valuable. If we cut Smith, some team will sign him as their third, emergency backup guy.
If we cut Huard, he’s probably still available if we need him.
The only exception would be if you think we can sneak Davis onto the practice squad, but that seems dicey – I don’t think anyone would pick him up right away, but I could see how someone would if their starter had to go on the IR.
nate davis
I too, was quite impressed with Davis’ ability to complete passes, as well as avoiding the pass rush. I would like to see him perform against a starting defense in an upcoming pre season game. He certainly can’t do any worse than Alex has since his rookie year!
you my friend
have smoked ur self stupid. do us all a favor – put the bong down – empty the water- put ur bong back in the case – and close your computer.
Chuck Norris has only lost in one thing. 1 on 1 with Monta.
Y'all are going to love him...
I’m a graduate of Ball State University, home of the mightiest robin-sized bird in America, the fighting Cardinals!
I had the pleasure (for once in my life) to watch true NFL talent at the college level take the field at Scheumann Stadium on the campus of Ball State over the past three seasons. Nate is no doubt the real deal. You’re going to want to keep him.
With that said, it will take him a year to get accustom to the offense. He started his freshman year, but wasn’t the starter day 1. He’s a good decision maker, won’t turn the ball over (unless he scrambles or plays against teams from Buffalo), and has a really strong arm.
His knock has ALWAYS been his learning disability – which was why he was only able to get on the field at Ball State. He’s played his entire career with something to prove and he’s succeeded at every level thus far. He ended his freshman season with a 147 passer rating, which was 18th best in the nation. He ended the season in the top 30 in passer rating all three yers at Ball State.
What you saw from him against Oakland’s third and fourth team will be what you get from him in the future. He will eventaully catch up to the speed of the NFL, and when he does will be a much better product on the field than what you currently have fighting for the starting QB.
Give him time!
