Singletary Names Shaun Hill Starter For '09 Season
As per the 49ers Official Website:
"Head coach Mike Singletary announced Monday that
Shaun Hill will be the 49ers starting quarterback when the regular season begins."
What do you all think? I'm glad, personally. I think Hill needs some confidence and I think he can do good things for this team. I just have not been impressed with Alex Smith, outside of a block and a tackle. Good news.
Fooch: Plenty more to come on this. Guess that means we'll get upwards of 2 quarters this Saturday from Hill and the first team offense. Alex Smith will definitely need to remain at the ready given how quickly things can change once the season starts.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

He has earned the right to start the season
He didn’t exactly wow me last weekend, but Alex Smith’s two best plays during the game were a block and a tackle. His toughness is impressive, but that is not good news.
Hill ain’t pretty, but he has proven that he can manage a game, not make big mistakes, and pull out some wins. He absolutely earned this chance.

yea Hill looked real good in the two preseason games trowing T.Ds,great passes, moving well in the pocket….wait i didnt see none of that

neither of them looked good during the pre-season
I don’t think anyone will argue with that. But Hill has proven himself a lot more during the games that count and Smith would have had to win the job away from him. He didn’t.
Obviously Hill isn’t stellar. But he is 7-3 as a starter and has consistently gotten more out of the same offense that Smith had to work with. He earned the job.

is it all in the record?
hills record is decent, but his talent is …. well mediocre. I personally dont like Hill but on the other hand the sooner they know who the starting QB is the sooner they can move on and spend some quality time on chemstry and timing…. the 9ers will need some serious YAC this year because HILL Is incapable of throwing further than 7 yards………. (sigh) RUSH!!!! RUSH!!!!! RUSH!!!!

With this out of the way
Shaun Hill can stop playing down to the competition (which WAS Smith), and get back to his style of dinking and dunking. Vs the Raiders Shaun looked over aggressive, trying to hit WRs 20 yards down field. (Possibly the mentality of a QB trying to win the starting job with 1 pass)

Singletary Should Have Avoided This
I like coach Singletary and think he will take us where we need to go. But i remain under the belief that we should have named Hill the starter from day one of training camp.

He’ll get the rest of the first-team reps in the preseason, which is going to be more than enough.

Win by default
I thought they would let them play this week to settle it. If VD doesn’t drop Alex’s pass Saturday he might have won it because Hill did nothing later in the game.
Knowing our luck, Hill be will “meh” against the Cowboys than Alex will role in at the end of 3rd quarter and throw for 2 touchdowns.

Default
I get the feeling the coaching staff feels that Smith won’t be able to do anything with a sprained thumb this week. It does give it the feeling of “win by default,” doesn’t it?
In any case, I’ve said all along that unless Smith absolutely wows, I don’t see how Hill loses the competition. Here’s to hoping there’s no reason for the team to have to look at Smith once the season starts. If they do, though, I hope he looks more ready than he has so far.

Probably a safe bet.
This is probably the safest bet for Sing’s future. However, for the future of the organization I’m not sure this was the best move. I like Hill and hope we can win with him at the helm. However, for the future of the franchise it would have been nice to see the younger more talented QB be named the starter. Hopefully, if there are struggles, Sing won’t hesitate to make a change.

You're right, but the problem is the only Younger, More Talented QB on the team is a rookie, Nate Davis.

As long as we win I don't care!!!
I was pulling for Smith. It didn’t mean I don’t like Hill. It had to be Hill that started. If Smith started and sucked then Hill would be coming off the bench for the 3rd year in a row to play hero. It would’nt be fair to Hill. I hope Hill can win. If he can’t, Sing WILL pull him right away and Smith will get his last chance to prove he is not a bust and win over 9ers fans. If that does’nt work either, then we’ll draft a QB and develop Nate Davis. Go Hill!!!

I don't think so. Smith was supposed to be "GONE" this year
Jeb gave him one more shot at a starter spot and he didn’t have the “right stuff”. Face it folks Smith is not a" has been" he is a “never was”… And for all the hype about his big tackle, he has apparently hurt his thumb which would likely turn out to be a season ending injury.
by WC-Ninerhead on Aug 24, 2009 6:49 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
To be fair
The hype was about the hit he laid on Greg Ellis. The tackle came on a tipped interception and he saved a touchdown.
by agchee on Aug 24, 2009 7:00 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
The TD he saved was due to his own mistake.
I had read some where in one of these posts that Bill Walsh causioned a QB to use “touch” on the ball. Smith hasn’t leaned that yet and the result was that the ball was thrown to hard for the receiver to catch it. The interseption was the result of Smiths pass, so he save a TD due to his own mistake. So from my point of view the tackle was what needed to be done and was not a supper effort. If didn’t make the tackle then well we would be “roasting” him all the more,
by WC-Ninerhead on Aug 24, 2009 8:25 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
JTO never made a tackle after his turnovers. The defense just took the ball all the way to the house.

Morgan shorthanded it seeing the hit coming. Catch the damn ball! Watch the replay and you will see the pass was not as high as you thought.

Meh.
I don’t know…I think if Sing pulled Hill for Smith mid-season, he’d receive very little criticism. I think the media knows that he was stuck having to choose between two crappy quarterbacks. If one happens to start performing especially bad, and he chooses to go with the other, then he’s really just playing the cards that he’s been dealt.
From another angle, Sing coaches from a “what have you done for me lately?” perspective, I think. That can be seen in his unwillingness to declare Hill the starter outright despite the fans clamoring to the guy and the media saying that Hill was to thank for the 49ers second half “success” and Sing getting the full time gig for it.
My pessimism goes to the point of suspecting the sincerity of the pessimists.

What is there not to like about Hill? Just because he doesn’t have the prototypical arm? Because he isn’t the most talented QB in the NFL? Or even on our roster? All the guy has done as a 49er is win games. Respect to winning right? I could care less if he has a cannon arm that can throw that ball 70 yards on a line. Sure that would be nice, but let’s be realistic. Hill has proven himself to be a competitor and a winner. Smith hasn’t!. It’s that simple

"Proven himself a winner"
To point at a QB’s record when talking about his performance is rather silly. Football is a team game, and a team’s win-loss record depends a lot on the performance of his teammates and his coach. It also depends on the quality of the opposition, and I’m not sure that any of Hill’s wins as a starter count as a win over a quality opponent.

Smith didn’t look better the whole offseason. They both looked average. And so the smart thing to do is give it to the guy who was productive last year and see if he can keep it up. Smith will have his chance if Hill screws it up. I think Hill is gonna lead us to a winning record, but if Smith has to come in later to get that done I’m all for it.

He will sign. Players hold out every year and we have been fortunate to not have any holdouts in a long time. He will sign. He probably won’t contribute til week 8 anyways. And Smith….well if he is a bust it’s only because he got injured. I feel the jury is still out on him. 9ers fans hate him but there is no other reason to hate cept for the fact that he hasn’t been healthy in 2 years. Fans forget quickly that he was coming along until his shoulder got destroyed by Bernard. He still may end up being the man. But until then, go Hill. I don’t care who it is as long as we win.

I agree about winning
I always believe that Hill gives us a good chance. I’m very happy that he won. Smith may be a decent QB but I don’t think he ‘ll be a Niner when he does. I believe that Nate Davis wil rise though the ranks in a couple of years to become the starting QB. I watch several tapes on him and he shows quick release, good reads and a cannon arm. With training and time, he can be the future of the Niners. If Smith is still with us I truely believe that Davis can beat him. So get something for Smith while you can. Yea, I know I’m crazy, but wait and see.

Smith never looked better that Hill...
Not this preseason. Not sure what games you were watching, but Hill either outperformed or played as well as Smith both games. I have come to the conclusion that Smith just doesn’t have what it takes to be an NFL QB. He doesn’t have IT. Hill can win with a lot of help from the running game and luck. Smith just doesn’t have the ability to consistently play QB in the NFL. Hopefully Davis will sit and learn and perhaps have what it takes to be an NFL QB in a year or 2, but Smith has proven that he DOES NOT have what it takes. If Smith had a Stellar preseason, he would only have earned consideration. He did not, so he is done. Good for Hill. I hope he can cobble together a few good quarters, and help win a few games. Hill is not a QB that will win a game for us by himself. Hopefully he wont lose games for us…
Another year, another chance to hope for the team !!
by FaStRmAn on Aug 24, 2009 9:06 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Not surprising, not inspiring ...
It would be easier to be enthusiastic about this if Smith had looked great and Hill had still beat him.
But this is the logical move, as much as I wanted Smith to pull it out and prove he was worth it. Smith had to win the competition hands down to earn the starting job, and even the biggest Smith fan can’t claim he did that.
Also, Hill has a nice history of being better when the games count, so we can cross our fingers for that.
by Ronaldinho on Aug 24, 2009 4:57 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Grateful that other team stories can now take precedent. Also grateful that this year was a legit QB battle unlike last season.
Going forward I think it’s the best decision for Hill, Smith and the team. Hill deserves and earned the opportunity and Smith can continue to develop in the same system and be ready in case of injury. As for Saturday, now Hill can play a full half with the starters vs a good and quick defense, then Alex can play the entire second half with the 2s. Both guys getting playing time is best for their respective developments.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.

I’m sure my excitement will sink in come Week 1. I’m also happy for Alex Smith – he can relax and play a productive preseason. Here’s hoping we find a trade partner so we can into 2009 with Hill, Huard and Davis as our 3 QBs. I’d be comfortable with that, how about you guys?

We all knew this was the proper thing to do. Hill is vastly superior to Smith and even Huard is a better option as the backup(although I believe the FO hopes that because of Smith and Huard’s ages, that Smith will be kept in the hope that he will improve enough to finally reach NFL backup level.(so he can backup Hill and in the future backup Davis,if Hill is traded or gone for some reason).
If they kept the best 3 QB’s to help them win THIS year, then it would be Hill and Huard and Davis for the future( Davis cannot be put on the PS ,he would be lost and he is the only franchise type guy on the roster,so he has to make the final 53 !!!). I believe they will keep Smith but they should keep Huard. I love McGloughan but he and Jed still hold out the fleeting hope that Alex can ever be anything in this League above backup.Even backup would be a step up for him and we have not seen him make that step yet. Hopefully ,IF they do keep smith on the roster,he will need to step up and finally show some improvement. If Hill gets hurt(running without a helment again, lol) then whoever comes in will need to be better than smith has ever shown, even when he was 100% healthy. An improved Smith ( IF he ever does improve) = Huard. ,so if they dump Huard ,as I think they will,we had better hope the best for Alex.

Hill
There shouldn’t have even been a competition. We can officially label Smith a bust now. He deserves no more chances. I wonder if someone would be willing to do a trade with Smith for some unproven QB buried on their bench. We know what we have, and really, we have known what we’ve had in Smith (a bad QB). If someone is willing to trade, at least we would be bringing in a new face to evaluate.
And I’m all for Nate Davis as the second string QB. Inexperienced, new system, I don’t care. We need to give Davis Smith’s reps in practices and games and get him ready. If Hill goes down or we need a replacement, throw him in the fire. I’m done with Smith. Alex who?
by blako on Aug 24, 2009 5:31 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Huard?
You really think that if the coaches, many years of experience professional coaches, thought he was the better option at quarterback, that there would’ve been a quarterback battle??? Yeah he looked really good against 3rd and 4th string players and after the first team offense ran the ball well and opened up the passing game.
by agchee on Aug 24, 2009 5:45 PM PDT up reply actions 1 recs
QB battle
The same experienced professional coaches you’re talking about allowed there to be a battle for the starting job between two guys this pre-season and one guy had no business being there. I know Nate Davis played against scrubs, but he looked to be one of the best on the field. I agree Huard would probably be a better last second starter if something happened to Hill, but I’m more or less saying Alex Smith doesn’t deserve the backup spot either. I would be happier watching a young, inexperienced Davis learn on the fly if he had to, than watch Smith take the field.
The worst thing about this is we knew this was going to be the conclusion long ago. There shouldn’t have been a competition. We should have cut Smith from the get go and pursued someone like Jeff Garcia, or maybe even Leftwich.

Our passing game is miserable. We at least need our mediocre QB to get lots of reps before the season starts.

Hill's deep ball
I saw an article about how Hill should be better at throwing the deep ball this year, what do you guys think about it?
by rice3eva on Aug 24, 2009 5:57 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
We’ll have no idea until we see it. He’s had finger problems in the past that are supposedly fixed now, but whether or not it was significantly affecting his throws is a complete unknown. We’ll see.

It exists... kinda
He can get it down the field. I’m just worried he can’t get it there in time. He doesn’t have good zip on the ball to hit the receivers in stride which give the corners and safeties to make a play on the ball.
by agchee on Aug 24, 2009 6:01 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I heard
He works on “throwing receivers open”….

lol
Yeah good idea. But really, I hope he can get it down the field better this year than last year. The Rams game comes to mind. Yeah it was a good catch, but a bad throw. It doesn’t matter how open a guy is if the corners and safeties have lots of air time to close on the ball.

A Real Surprise!!!
Is anyone surprised by this announcement? Hill hasn’t done anything to lose the starting job, Smith hasn’t done anything to win the starting job. I am surprised it was even considered a QB competition. Hill has done nothing but win as a starting QB with the 49ers. We are not asking him to pull a Romo and throw for 300 yards game in and game out. All he has to do is manage the offense, remain relatively mistake free and hand the ball off to Gore and Coffee 60 percent of the time. If our offensive line can give Hill time to pass there is no doubt in my mind he can do what is needed for our offense to succeed this season.
Now the larger question remains. Who will earn the backup QB position? I really do think that Huard is a possibility to be our #2 QB, he has a veteran presence and can step in an at any moment and be an effective signal caller. The #2 and #3 QB spots is what the rest of training camp is about. Do we release Huard, install Smith as the #2 and keep Davis at #3? Do we keep both Smith and Huard and somehow hope Davis can make it to the practice squad without being claimed? Do we keep all 4 QB’s and go into the season thin at another position? Or do we release Smith and have Huard at #2 and Davis at #3? Interesting to see how this will play out.

It was fun rooting for the Niners again late last year. Smith may have his bright spots, but it is always a downer for some reason when he is present. Controversy, injuries, poor play, coach controversy, bad press, defensive fans interested only in potential, whatever. I feel great again as a Niner fan. Wonder why I was put through this competition crap yet again for the obvious outcome, when Hill could have been really developing. The good team is back together again! Yeah! Go Niners! Alex Smith 2006-2009 RIP
And that folks is Alex Smith’s career. Yes there is still a chance Hill gets injured during the pre season/regular season and opens the door for Smith, yes there is still a chance Hill falls on his face and is replaced by Smith but for all intents and purposes he’s Tim Couch. He’ll never be a starter in this league if he can’t even beat Shaun Hill out. Not a hit on Hill but unless surrounded around a ton of offensive pieces and a Ravenish defense, Shaun Hill isn’t leading a team deep into the playoffs.
Bright spot is we can now focus back on Quarterback in the off season. Drafting Smith #1 overall was a bust and we are still looking for Jeff Garcia’s replacement 5 years later.

Yes There Is
Do you really trust Alex Smith to take extended snaps if Hill goes down? Nate Davis isn’t ready to play in a regular season game at this point in his career. So there absolutely remains a spot for Damon Huard with the 49ers. Remember he has the experience and has proven to can play if needed. I say keep 4 QB’s, release Allen Rossum and have Michael Spurlock return kicks. Why do we need Rossum if we have Spurlock?
by nocal81 on Aug 24, 2009 11:11 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I would have a hard time dropping Rossum but we do need to have a veteran signal caller that can run the offense and i don’t think Smith is that guy. Plus i don’t see the 49ers releasing him so this remains a viable option at this point.
by nocal81 on Aug 24, 2009 11:12 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Why have Smith on the roster at all if you’re not going to use him if Hill fails? We shouldn’t feel like we need a plan C, and if we do end up needing one we can sign freaking Chris Weinke because it won’t matter anyway.

Good Point!
I have to agree with you on that one. But what would the cap hit be if they were to release Smith? He did just sign a new 2 year contract. Also i do like the fact that Smith is obviously more of a team player then anyone gave him credit for being, including myself. But now it’s up to the front office to decide what to do!
Regarding Rossum. I do like him as a player, but what need do we have for him? Spurlock can take up two roster spots by being either our 4th, 5th or 6th receiver as well as our punt and kick returner. Would that not open up a spot for Nate Davis(who i think will make the team regardless), or Terrell Lambert, Eric Green, Marques Harris, Alex Boone? Or whoever else may or may not be on the bubble? Conventional wisdom says we release Rossum however hard that may be to do.

One thing to remember
Assist. coaches are watching him like the FBI or CIA Agents. If Davis goes on the wire, you catch him , hide him and put him on the IR list, I would. In 2 years, he will be the starting QB. Smith got to much competition . Huard will be available when they need them, in case they need a 3rd string backup. Who going to sign him ? Possble, but highly unlikely. Seahawk Fan all this time ? Disappointment and lower expectations!
Neither Hill nor Smith did anything to earn to be leader of first team! 49ers always had “a” winning QB! There was Albert, Title, Brodie, Montana, Young, Garica etc. But this is like going back to the lowly Mira, Deberg, Spurrier days!!! This is not good a sign. So for now we’ll just win with making fewer mistakes, strong blocking and running as well as solid defense. But you can’t win without a QB! These are nice guys but, unfortnately, the talent is not there to get 49ers to the top level!
However, I did see something in Nate Davis. Just maybe….
So will win some close ones and lose some close ones this year! And losing those close will be why they may be a wild card team and won’t get pass the first round. I hope I am wrong. But that was I said when we drafted Smith number one! I had hoped that I was wrong! Unfortnately I was right!

So Hill it is!
At least until they can draft his replacement. Hill is a journeyman QB. He’s no starter. We wont get anywhere with Hill as the starter. Same goes for Smith. The Niner’s QB of the future probably isnt on the roster yet. Hopefully they will do well this year and maybe find a good qb in the draft next year that they can start grooming to be a successful QB in the NFL. I have not seen enough of Davis to say he is a possibility. Where does that leave Smith? Is he even good enough to be the #2 guy? He looked pretty poor in the game against the Raiders. Same bad habits as when he was a rookie. He has really had no improvement whatsoever over all this time. That is a really bad sign for a QB. There should have been some improvement but there really hasn’t been. Maybe they make Davis the #2, Huard the #3 and let Smith go. Maybe he can succeed somewhere else. I don’t think so, but who knows?

Hill in the first half and Davis in the second half. I am real interested to see how Davis plays and if he continues to improve on a pretty good game against Oakland. It may not mean much this season but i would like to know where we stand with him before the end of the Preseason. I don’t even want to come close to drafting Tebow unless it’s in the 5th round or something. Bradford okay! Mccoy and Tebow? Hell NO!!!!!
Other college QB’s with better pro potential include Jevon Snead(Mississippi) and Jimmy Clausen(Notre Dame). Not Tebow or Mccoy. Mark my words, they will both bomb in the NFL
by nocal81 on Aug 24, 2009 11:19 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
IC.
I don’t know how those three will project as far as NFL futures go. I was under the same impression as you that Bradford has the most pro potential, and could be the #1 pick in the draft next year. As far as Tebow goes, his situation seems eerily similar to Alex Smith (coached by Urban Meyer, ran a prolific offense, bit of running qb). The phrase “fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me” comes to mind. As far as Colt McCoy goes, what exactly is wrong with him? Does he not have pro potential, or is he more of a system qb or something?
Honestly, I completely forgot about Clausen. As an SC fan, I can’t feel to bad for ND being as bad as it has been the past few years, but it certainly would be something special if we got another heralded qb out of ND. The last guy to throw for us from that school was purty good, from what I hear.

Don't Feel Too Bad For ND
They will be playing the Gators in the BCS National Championship Game LOL, at least according to Lou Holtz. All joking aside my Irish will have a damn good season in 2009, i am looking at 11-2 or 12-1. Partly due to an easy schedule. But this is a story for another time. Maybe i will set up a college football preview thread?
Regarding the QB’s in the 2010 draft. Well from what i here regarding Mccoy is that he is a system QB as you suggested. But i am not all too familiar with the reasoning behind that because from what i have seen he has been a great “college” signal caller. Maybe i am bias as an Irish alumn, but i see huge pro potential for Jimmy Clausen, he has the arm strength and accuracy to make it in the NFL. What remains to be seen is his head and how he would handle the pressure. But we may see that play out this season if indeed ND is undefeated when playing at home against the Trojans or “if” they make it to a BCS game. The bigger wild card is Javon Snead from Mississippi. He struggled in the first 5 games last season but came on strong in the second have and had something like a 21-3 TD/INT ratio in the final 7 games. He has the arm strength and athletic ability to be a real dynamic NFL QB. Tebow just doesn’t have the look of an NFL signal caller. I am not sure if it is the system he runs the allows me to access it like that or the fact that his “accuracy” has come into question at some point. He reminds me more of an Eric Crouch, Scott Frost and Charlie Ward type.
Lets make no mistake about it. Shaun Hill is our starting QB and if he plays well in 2009 he will be our starter in 2010 and maybe even 2011, but he is in his 8th season and we do need to look to the future. This is why we must take a big look at Nate Davis in the final two preseason games simply because we can’t afford to spend one of our two 1st rd picks in a QB if we may have a successor on the roster right now. My best bet is that we do use one of our two 1st rd picks in 2010 on a QB, but we will not trade up to acquire one. People are infatuated with Bradford, Mccoy and Tebow but i will tell you that Clausen and Snead may actually be better pro QB’s and we could take either one in the first round without trading up.

I am starting to fret with all the dinks accumulating through training camp. This trojan squad isn’t very deep in all the skill positions, really the heart and soul of the team will be the offensive line/running game. So when O’Dowd goes down with an injury, I start to worry because we will be heavily relying on McKnight, Johnson and Gable to win us ball games. I am praying for another shot at the title game this year, but the ringer of a schedule we face this year indicates that such hopes may as well be pipe dreams.

I'm still waiting for Charlie Weis to meet expectations
he’s been there for what, 4 years? This is the season which should make or break him, as he finally has a veteran squad led by a veteran QB, all who were recruited by him. If the squad underachieves this year, I think ND might end up saying “bye bye Charlie”
LOL, honestly I hate the Irish as much you hate the Trojans, but from my end it is less of a rivalry hatred and more to do with all the concessions your school gets from the BCS. I think ND should just rejoin the Big East or go to the Big 10 and play by the same rules that conference teams play by. You guys are unfairly entitled to special BCS considerations just because you’re an ‘independent’.

Lol no slogan for new QB’s. I believe we are doing this the right way. You got a guy that has that it factor in Hill. Not sure if it is buyable in the playoffs, but once we get there that when u can evaluate him better. Plus NATE DAVIS is learning behind two QB who made it in the league from Draft (AS) and FA (SH). Those first hand looks plus watching from the sidelines he will benefit Davis for trying to win the job for starter or backup next year. The only way we are drafting for a QB is this has to be a bad season and niners nation is screaming for a Franchise QB. But I believe we will draft where we need help the most ie whatever our lowest ranking stat will be this year.

I guess what it all boils down to is:
are you comfortable with the prospect of Nate Davis being our eventual franchise QB?
I don’t want it to devolve into a Minnesota/Tavaris Jackson situation where they end up wasting a few years hoping that their young signal-caller develops, but end up going for the old washed up QB in the end. We’ve already faced something similar with Alex Smith, and I really don’t think we want to repeat that mistake. I’m as tired of the neverending QB search as the next guy, but at the same time if we get a shot at that franchise QB in next year’s draft, I don’t think we can pass up that opportunity.

However-this guy is NOT the long term answer. They need to draft a QB next year that will be groomed to take over in the next 3 years.

Davis?
Do you not think Nate Davis could be groomed to take over in the next 3 years? He’s got his issues, but he also has a whole lot of the physical skills necessary. And he’ll be a year ahead of anybody next year in terms of learning an NFL offense.

This is true
There is a reason he fell to the 5th round.
I am not saying he couldn’t be a probowler-but the chances of that not happening are much more likely

The simple truth about Davis is that we ...
… as fans, are going to have no idea how ready he is before draft day 2010.
We have little option but to take the team’s word for it. They will see him work and grow over the course of the season in drills and practice.
If the team doesn’t draft a QB next year, it’s a strong indication that they think he could be the guy. We have nothing to base such a judgement on, however. Maybe we’ll get tidbits if Maiocco is allowed to watch enough practices, but the truth is we’re really not going to have anything to base our opinion on that we don’t already have.

getting Eric Berry is the better draft choice for us haha

Not sure this was the wisest decision...
Smith didn’t perform that poorly, there were three dropped balls, one tipped for the pick, and smith made the saving tackle…..he’s a gamer and wants this bad…..i say let them compete at least one more week, maybe both preseason games to make it clear….Hill did poorly when he got in there and I don’t see him as the clear alternative at this point….we need to see more play, maybe the entire half to determine who should start……for crying out loud, another season on the line and they are still only playing a quarter tops, or a few series each…….c’mon coaches….get them in there and get their hands dirty…..lets see what these guys can do in Dallas this week!

You so forgiving
Alex is just not a good qb. We can say as much hypothetical crap as we want. But we must look at the evidence. And that is that Alex sucks and Hill, even though he may not appear to be much better now, has a winning record as a starter. Hill is just the safer bet at this point. It wouldn’t hurt to let him play on Saturday though.

Hill shouldn't have to perform well to earn the starting job ...
… because we have a good sense of what Hill can do during the regular season.
Smith had to outperform what we expect from Hill, and he didn’t.
