49ers QB Shaun Hill day-to-day with a sprained lower back

Well then.  Shortly after naming Shaun Hill the 49ers starting quarterback, Singletary informed the media (earlier today) that Hill has a sore/sprained lower back and is day-to-day.  It sounds like he's not sure at this point if Hill will play this weekend at Dallas.  I've included the transcript of Singletary's press conference after the jump.  In regards to the back issue and the QB situation as a whole:

On why Shaun Hill threw just one pass in practice:
"Sore lower back. It’ll be day-to-day. We’ll determine day-to-day and see if he’ll play in the game or not."

On whether it appeared today:
"Yesterday."

On whether he’s worried that he’s hurt after being named the starter:
"It doesn’t bother me a bit. It is what it is."

On what the injury is:
"Just sprained lower back."

On whether it’s a sprained back:
"Sprain, strain. Whatever it is, but it’s lower back." (It was later clarified as a low back strain)

On how the injury happened:
"I have no idea."

On whether it would be Damon Huard or Nate Davis to start against the Cowboys if Shaun Hill is unavailable:
"I don’t know. I’m assuming he’s going to play, but I don’t know that. So, I don’t even want to think about all the other stuff."

On whether Alex Smith has been ruled out for the game:
"Yes."

This is not exactly what you would call an ideal situation for getting the offense in sync before the start of the regular season.  For a one-off type of game it would be pretty interesting to see Nate Davis playing with the first team offense.  However, in getting ready for the regular season, this is not good.  The team needs to develop consistency and chemistry and if your #1 QB is on the shelf for the game that doesn't happen.  Of course, maybe that means we'll see more of the starters in the final preseason game at San Diego.  Either way, it's something to pay close attention to over the next two weeks.

On whether Alex Smith has been ruled out for the game:
"Yes."

On whether something happened on the pass Shaun Hill threw today:
"I don’t know. I don’t know. I just know that it showed up yesterday, pushed himself through practice, got some treatment yesterday. Today it was still there. He probably could have pushed himself through practice, but I told him, ‘You don’t need to do that. Let the other guys get the reps and let’s go.’"

On what he’s seen from the offensive and defensive lines thus far:
"Defensive line, I think, has really stepped up in terms of the execution, having a great idea of what we’re striving to do, what we need to get done. They continue to make strides day-to-day. I think our offensive line, I’m extremely proud of what they have accomplished thus far, and we just have to build on that on both sides of the ball."

On how he feels about Jimmy Raye saying that Frank Gore is the centerpiece of the offense:
"It means that when we go out and play, you want to get the ball into the hands of your playmaker. And, to me and our offense, Frank is our No. 1 playmaker. That’s what that means, and we want to get the ball in his hands as many ways as we can."

On whether the team will accent the passing game more in Dallas:
"We’re going to let the game dictate it."

On whether he is unsettled by Hill’s injury given that the third preseason game is important for preparation for the regular season:
"It’s not unsettling at all, not one bit. We’re going to go to Dallas and we’re going to play football. I’m not going to worry about who’s not ready to go and who’s hurt and all of those things. No. We’re going to go and we should execute just fine."

On whether there is still a competition at right cornerback:
"Still a competition."

On what he’s seen from CB Tarell Brown:
"I think all of our guys, Tarell Brown, who’s had the toe, Dre Bly, Shawntae [Spencer], they’re just going to continue to compete just like they do when they come out here. And, they understand that. It’s just, they’re going to continue to compete for that position and we’ll go from there."

On whether one person is ahead in that competition:
"No."

On whether the duration of Shaun Hill’s starting job is a week-to-week thing:
"It’s not a week-to-week thing. He is our starter. What does that mean? I think it means that you say, ‘Here’s the ball. Here’s the offense. Here’s the ball. Here’s the offense. Let’s go. Don’t look over here when you make a mistake. Don’t look over here when you throw an interception, just know that everything we talked about this offseason – how we win football games – just do what we know we have to do in order to win football games.’ I don’t want him looking to the sidelines wondering if I’m going to take him out and put somebody – no. We’re not going to do that. That’s not fair to anyone."

On whether he’s more committed to Hill now than he was last season:
"Yes. Absolutely."

On whether Hill will have an MRI:
"No … I really don’t think that’s necessary."

On whether WR Michael Crabtree is less valuable now that he’s missed almost all the double-session practice days and two preseason games:
"I’m not going to comment on it because I don’t know what kind of shape he’s in. Obviously, he’s not in game shape, but I just really want to continue to focus on our guys here and, as I’ve said before, when I look at Crabtree, he’s a guy out there who I know is a talented guy, that’s why we picked him at the 10th slot. But, until he’s here and until we can evaluate and do those things, we have to look at the guys who we can see and evaluate every day."

On what some players might think about Crabtree not having gone through two-a-day practices:
"Those things work themselves out. It depends on the attitude of the guy who comes in, and really, they control that more than anything else."

On whether Crabtree was a good teammate when he was here during the spring:
"I got the sense that it was tough for him to integrate himself into the team because he had the foot. As a player, you come in, you want to contribute. That’s the thing that he wanted to do, and it frustrated him that he couldn’t do it, and it’s not something that he articulated to me, it’s just something that you know about a player. So, naturally you don’t feel a part. Then you’ve got to negotiate your contract. So, all of those things take care of themselves in time. We’ll just let it take care of itself."

On what TE Delanie Walker and his athleticism bring to the offense:
"We’re fortunate to have two athletic tight ends – and one is a very dominant blocker. When I look at Delanie, he’s a guy that creates mismatches. He creates mismatches all over the field because you don’t have enough guys to cover all our guys. It’s just one of those things where he has to continue to figure out his niche and where his place is in the offense and how he can contribute and grow in that role."

On the role he wants Walker to play:
"The same role you saw during the game, same thing. Just make plays. If you have an opportunity to make a play that we designed for you to make, make a play."

On whether he intends to keep four quarterbacks on the roster:
"I don’t want to go there. Right now, we’ve got Shaun. We’ve got Alex. Alex has a sore thumb. Shaun has a sore back. To me, in my mind, nothing has really changed. We’ve just got some guys – football happens, so they’re banged up a little bit. When they comeback, we’ll go from there."

Yep, 4 QB's on the roster

Hill and Smith are injury prone. If the preseason ended today, Davis has done enough to merit a roster spot. This doesn’t mean I want him to start Day 1.

Sprain back . . . ahh that’s awful. Huard and Davis versus the Cowboys.

by bignerd on Aug 26, 2009 1:12 PM PDT reply actions

frankly

I’d love to see Davis play all four quarters against the Cowboys. sure, sprinkle in some Huard, but I’d love to see Davis get a big amount of reps against a team’s first string, just to see where he’s at.

by Andrew Davidson on Aug 26, 2009 1:13 PM PDT up reply actions

Agreed

I think that would be great for him.

by Brendan Scolari on Aug 26, 2009 3:53 PM PDT up reply actions

I’d give him 2 quarters against the Cowboys without Hill and Smith. I wouldn’t want to damage him in a game he hasn’t been prepared for. I’d play him in the 2nd and 4th quarter, that way he has some exposure to starting defensive unit but isn’t stepping on the field with a huge target on his back.

by bignerd on Aug 26, 2009 4:44 PM PDT up reply actions

How would it damage him to play one whole game?

Just use a conservative game plan and protection schemes. As I’ve said before I really hope Huard doesn’t make the team so letting him play is a waste to me.

by Brendan Scolari on Aug 26, 2009 5:01 PM PDT up reply actions

But what if he get's hurt?..

He is a rookie, ya know.

Well, we're waiting....

by drummer on Aug 26, 2009 5:57 PM PDT up reply actions

So why play any starters then?

It’s not like he’s much more likely to get hurt because he’s a rookie> He’s not supposed to play in the regular season anyways so it’s not like we’d be losing a contributor.

by Brendan Scolari on Aug 26, 2009 6:16 PM PDT up reply actions

3rd game will have more packages..

This game isn’t about Davis. It’s about the rest of the offense. If Huard has a better grasp and more experience then you go with Huard. It’s bad enough Hill is day to day and Smith is out. Huard goes with 1st team, Davis with 2nd and 3rd. Throwing Davis to the wolves doesn’t help an offense who are in their first year of an OC.

Well, we're waiting....

by drummer on Aug 26, 2009 6:37 PM PDT up reply actions

Maybe

Hopefully Hill is healthy and Davis can play in the second half.

by Brendan Scolari on Aug 26, 2009 10:16 PM PDT up reply actions

This.

It’s a great that people want to see Nate Davis play, but if Huard has a better understanding of the offense, the 49ers still need to evaluate the other potential starters and backups on that offense.

Maybe that's why he sucks so much.

by Brendan Scolari on Aug 27, 2009 10:33 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't see how that's relevant

I didn’t say he would play well but at least it would be a good low pressure learning experience.

by Brendan Scolari on Aug 26, 2009 10:15 PM PDT up reply actions

It’s not low pressure. It’s the 3rd preseason games. Teams unleash their front line units at full speed for 2/3 quarters. Davis just started getting reps last Monday in the 49ers offense. Your setting this guy up to get his head kicked in. What is the benefit of that?

The point with Eli Manning is he didn’t know what he was doing yet and practically got his head ripped off in that game. Considering we are already down 2 QB’s maybe it would be wise to try to protect this one. Let Huard take the brunt of the attack because he can probably see it coming and protect himself in the pocket.

by bignerd on Aug 26, 2009 10:29 PM PDT up reply actions

It's preseason

It doesn’t count. The media won’t be all over him if he struggles. It’s low pressure, at least IMO.

Like I said, use a conservative gameplan and max protect on most of Davis’ passes. I don’t think he’ll get his head kicked in, even if the offense isn’t wildly successful that way.

by Brendan Scolari on Aug 26, 2009 10:35 PM PDT up reply actions

It’s not the media that gets to the QB’s. What kills a QB’s confidence is the defense kicking the snot out of him and picking off every pass thrown.

You can’t exactly play the conservative game against the Cowboys. The offense needs to move the ball and score points or the team will get blown. Not something you want in the tune up game before the season. I agree with Drummer, this game is more than just about Davis.

by bignerd on Aug 26, 2009 10:43 PM PDT up reply actions

Agreed with the last sentence

I’d still rather see Davis get the reps than throw them away to Huard though. It’s not like if Huard is in the offense is going to be scoring all over the place, they’ll probably still be pretty unsuccessful for the most part. Huard is pretty limited himself.

by Brendan Scolari on Aug 26, 2009 10:50 PM PDT up reply actions

Davis and Huard..

both have had a poor practice today:

http://www.sacbee.com/static/weblogs/49ers/archives/2009/08/davis-has-mixed.html

Hill might start on Saturday, but his back should be a concern during the season. My feeling is he won’t last long with the poor pass protection, yet, all of the other QB’s would be toast. Davis throwing picks in a 3rd pre-season game won’t help the offense. Davis missing WRs won’t help them either. This is the game where you need to equal pass vs. run. Putting Davis out there against the DAL first string defense is suicide.

Well, we're waiting....

What I find interesting were the comments I read during the game thread where people said Hill looked a step slow and out of sorts on his throws. Maybe this isn’t an issue that crept up yesterday but an issue he could no longer hide in today’s practice. Sing had no explanation for how it occurred.

who said it might be a football injury? Great news on Monday that he was named the starter. Maybe the injury occur after dark? Lilian or Eve could have something to do with that ? This is like... a sign

The ONLY way for Nate Davis to get a shot would be for something like this to happen. I’m really eager to see what he can do against a 1st string offense. If he can take advantage of this opportunity we don’t even know the QB possibilities anymore! Or he’ll show rookie mistakes but glimpses of better-than-Alex-Smith talent and secure a roster spot. Either way I’m kinda excited now since Hill will definitely be back regardless by the season start.

what if like Andy Lee hits the scoreboard so hard that it falls onto the Dallas defense thus breaking all their legs and the offense must become the defense… but yeah I saw the mistake after i wrote it but thought ppl would understand haha

Davis could use the work

I think Davis and Huard will prove if they are keepers or not. If they each do well then I got a feeling that they will put Smith up on the trading block soon. A sore thumb will not put him the IR. Who knows.

by WC-Ninerhead on Aug 26, 2009 4:58 PM PDT reply actions

Why would anyone trade for Smith?

And we don’t need Huard to prove anything, he’s been in the league long enough that it’s obvious what kind of player he is.

by Brendan Scolari on Aug 26, 2009 5:02 PM PDT up reply actions

So we just keep him on the payroll and or cut him and our losses?

If we keep him on the roster I don’t have much confidence that he can deliver and by keeping him on the roster that moves some other worth while player out. My thought was that there must a way to get some value from all that that the organization has invested him.

by WC-Ninerhead on Aug 26, 2009 5:31 PM PDT up reply actions

There's the problem though

If the Niners don’t have confidence in him why would any other team? It’s true that the organization has invested a ton in him but that doesn’t mean he has value. It’s like if the Raiders tried to trade Michael Huff. Why would anyone want him when he’s expensive and he’s been a complete bust?

Obviously it’d be nice to get something for Smith, but no one else is going to trade for him.

by Brendan Scolari on Aug 26, 2009 5:40 PM PDT up reply actions

He couldn't beat out Shaun Hill for the starting QB gig.

Furthermore, he looked the same crappy Alex Smith of old. It would be miraculous to get something higher than a 7th rounder, 6th is pushing it, for Smith, unless some front office goes completely off the deep end, and then some. Or perhaps practice-squad fodder type depth player at a non-premium position.

The NFL is like that. It’s like playing Hearts, you never know if your discard is the card your opponent needs to beat you.

by WC-Ninerhead on Aug 26, 2009 9:17 PM PDT up reply actions

Oh please

Alex Smith might be a treasure if we traded him to QB a high school football team, but that’s about it. You can’t possibly think we’d get anything for the guy.

by Brendan Scolari on Aug 26, 2009 10:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Some team would trade for him. He’d get a lot of interest on the free market as a backup with a slight possibility of someday maturing into a starter. A so-so pick would be worth the price to grab Smith before he came to market.

Kill Alex Smith all you want. The market for QB’s is much, much worse than him. Several teams were after Rex Grossman this offseason to be a backup, Michael Vick got a job. Alex Smith easily has a market.

by bignerd on Aug 26, 2009 10:36 PM PDT up reply actions

Mike Vick is a lot better than Alex Smith

Or at least was. Even Grossman is probably better than Smith. Here’s Smith’s career to date using DVOA which you know I like. At least is shows how inefficent Smith has been:

2008: Didn’t play
2007: Ranked 49th out of 51 qualifying QB’s. Only Trent Dilfer and John Beck (on a 1-15 team) were worse.
2006: 35th out of 46
2005: Far and away the worst QB in the league out of 46 guys, with a DVOA almost 3 times as bad as anyone else

It’s been 3 years since he wasn’t completely awful, and even then he was bad. Obviously the lack of talent makes him look worse, but I don’t need to kill Smith, the stats do all the work.

Maybe some team would trade a 7th rounder for him or something if we’re lucky, but a 7th is basically just giving you rights to your favorite undrafted free agents. I really don’t see Smith getting anything better.

by Brendan Scolari on Aug 26, 2009 11:01 PM PDT up reply actions

I finally got to see Smith play against the Raiders tonight. I actually saw some improvement. He was making his progression of reads and was decisive for once. He still had a few bad habits: like never squaring up to throw when he rolls out . . . at least faking it makes the pursing defender pause for a second. Still not the greatest touch or accuracy but improved. Eli Manning has neither touch nor accuracy with medium throws.

The passes he missed:
1. Throws a duck to Bruce who one armed it and would have caught it with his body. He didn’t give it the effort.
2. VD pass was helmet high, I’m not sure what the excuse was because those are the easiest balls to see inside a helmet.
3. The pass to Josh Morgan was high and was going to get him hit but Morgan tipped that ball up before contact. If Morgan doesn’t make a rookie move and expose the ball that’s an incompletion and not interception.

Alex Smith isn’t going to get cut or traded this year unless Davis goes off the next two games. Hill is injury prone and already has a back problem. Alex will be playing some games for the 49ers this season.

by bignerd on Aug 26, 2009 11:31 PM PDT up reply actions

I can't blame the INT on Morgan..

Smith has been a QB longer than Morgan has been a WR in the Pros. It doesn’t matter much if it was Morgan who was the target. The throw was high. Even if he caught it, Smith left him out there to get killed. That’s not a good throw by any means.

Waived...

… and traded for are two different things. Late round picks aren’t really worth a whole lot, but why give one up when you can sign a comparable QB from the FA heap for less money (Smith is owed around $2M for each of the next two seasons) and without giving up a draft pick?

Hill deserves a break

The QB competition was grueling, and so he lets down when he finally wins. SJ Mercury is pushing this way too far. Sing and McCoughlin have put together a reasonable team that is going to be good but not stellar. Folks will get banged up and others will pick up the load. We haven’t had a team this good in too long to snub our nose at it. I think Sing approached it just right. Whatever. We’ll play. And play tough. Later, the Crabtree-Davis connection is going to be a lot of fun. Could be in week four of preseason.
