We'll see how the 49ers wrap things up for the 49ers and Cowboys today. I'll do what I can to get a recap up later tonight. Worst case, first thing in the AM. I'll add a note to this when I figure it out.
Fooch's Update 11:40pm: I'll have some recap analysis first thing in the morning, scheduled for 6am pacific/9am eastern.

Yeeehaaawww!!!
Nate Davis takes us to the Super Bowl next year!
Kool-aid aside, he sure looked good tonight. Yes he was up against backups, but they were still professionals, and he just made good solid decisions and didn’t turn the ball over. He showed a lot of maturity and smart play that rookies like Matt Stafford have yet to learn. He seems to know when to gun it and when to just float it up there. Gotta love the young guy!

Go Rookies!!
There is no way we can put Kory Sheets, or Nate Davis on the practice squad… no way…

Agreed
They would never clear waivers.

That is a YES from me.
I really like what I see from Davis.

Sheets would not clear waivers at this point
I think that is pretty for sure. He isnt sneaking below the radar anymore after that blast up the middle for the touchdown. That replay will get seen. He has to stay on the active roster. I think Huard has played himself off the team and Davis has played his way on it. Davis FOR SURE wont clear waivers. He has a rocket arm and the ability to read defenses that 3rd year players struggle with. he reads defenses better than Smith already.
Another year, another chance to hope for the team !!
Exciting game

Well when you compare it to the first half of the raider game
It was only 10 – 3 at the half… was it 24 – 0 at the half for the RayDUHS? I think the defense played as well as it could without a pass rush. The turnover was good and they did get some pressure. Romo is a good QB and if you give him time he will pick you apart. that is exactly what he did. They couldnt run the ball till the 4th qtr.
This from NFL .com
“Talk of the video screens will continue: While the Cowboys Stadium video boards weren’t an issue during the game, 49ers punter Andy Lee kicked a ball into one of the monitors hanging over the field in warmups. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell ruled earlier this week that the Cowboys won’t have to raise the screens, but they remain a hot topic as the season nears.
" Everybody take a shot!!
Another year, another chance to hope for the team !!
I don't think we want to compare ourselves to the Raiders
We want to be a lot better than them.

Agreed but
This is the preseason anyway. People like to say that the 1st half is all that matters. Well that second half mattered to OUR team. We saw players who just might be the future of our team play their heart out. That Heave by Davis out of the end zone was an emphatic "NO, WE AIN’T GOING DOWN LIKE THAT ! " I know it was a lucky play that we got the pass interference, but I like lucky players… especially when they are QB’s
Sure the Cowboys had a few starters out on offense… so did we. It is the 3rd Preseason game. Thats the closest thing to real NFL we are gonna get till the real deal in September. Hill looked bad but he didnt throw a pick and he moved the ball a little. Enough to give our defense a chance anyway. the first quarter score was 0-0 so the defense must have done something right.
Another year, another chance to hope for the team !!
The Cowboys piled up..
Over 100 yards of offense to the 49ers 50 in the first half. That isn’t doing something right.
Well, we're waiting....
Yes but
The Cowboys handily outplayed us in the first half, which is the most important part.

If all you have is negative, are you only here to convince the rest of us that there is only bad for the Niners?

Not impressed
Nate Davis, fantastic. First half, abysmal. I really hope our first team defense/offense can pick things up. Come on Shaun!
Same here kind of
I am excited about the young guys we have, hopefully they develop into our starters
Thank you Al Davis for Michael Crabtree!!!!!
Me too!
I like Davis a LOT! He has the heart of a winner! That Heave from the endzone wasn’t a bad play like the announcers were saying. I believe that play was an all out effort by a player with heart! He threw it as hard as he could to the only receiver he could see and counted on his guy to make a play on it. He was hoping that SOMETHING would happen to keep the drive alive! If he threw it out of bounds like the announcers said he should have, they would have punted from their own endzone and it would have been returned to about where it would have been intercepted anyway! I like the HEART that the KID showed. He wanted to keep that drive ALIVE. Compare that to the 3 and out of Huard. There is a reason Huard didnt come back into the game. I think Huard played himself off the roster in that series. I think Singletary saw enough of Huard to know that Davis was his new 3rd string QB. I’d bet money that Huard is cut and Davis stays on the active roster now. No WAY he clears waivers now. And the heart that Sheets showed means he wont clear waivers either. There are going to be some names cut on cut down day that are going to lift some eyebrows. Cant wait for the real games to begin! GO NINERS !!!
Another year, another chance to hope for the team !!

Look,
both Nate Davis and Sheets will not pass through waivers to the practice squad, so the Niners are going to have to carry them on the squad, and quite honestly, I don’t think that they’ll regret it to have them on the roster.
Think about having Gore, Coffee and Sheets banging the ball. And with Nate Davis in the wings if I were Hill and Smith I wouldn’t feel very comfortable.

you missed the future,
and his name is Nate Davis.
I take full responsibility for my irresponsibility.
It's nice to have a future
Considering everything else McCloughan did this offseason went to {expletive} it’s nice to know he left us with one gold nugget before we fire him.
Yes, I’m re-igniting the Fire Scott McCloughan bandwagon after the 3rd preseason game. When the biggest needs going from 2008 to 2009 are QB, OT and OLB and he misses like a Vanderjagt FG on all three of them than it’s time to go. Nate Davis, Alex Boone are Carolina’s 1st round pick are answers in 2011.
ive gone back and forth on mccloughan
but he just doesnt seem able to move on from a bad draft pick and admit that he needs to replace his own guy.
I take full responsibility for my irresponsibility.
Disagree
Our draft this year had to be one of our best ever!! I give credit to McCloughan for that. Oh, and we picked up the CB we had our eye on and he already made a great contribution tonight(causing the fumble).
by Riding The F Train on Aug 29, 2009 9:39 PM PDT up reply actions
"Nate Davis, Alex Boone are Carolina’s 1st round pick are answers in 2011."
If they really are answers for 2011 then McCloughan did very well considering he got the first rounder for a second, Davis was a 5th rounder, and Boone wasn’t even drafted. We haven’t even seen our top pick yet. What specifically would you have done differently?
by Brendan Scolari on Aug 29, 2009 10:38 PM PDT up reply actions
I wrote more about this below. But specifically it doesn’t look he’s done much to help the team this season. IMO, a good GM ought to be able to help address the team’s immediate needs and build for the future at the same time.
It is sorta a big deal to break this culture of losing. After awhile the good guys you have start to flee elsewhere leaving the franchise spinning it’s wheels. Just go look up the history the Arizona Cardinals for an example.
Not to be too homerish...
but I have to agree with the sentiment that this has been one of the best rookie classes in recent memory. Coffee, Sheets, Davis, Boone and McKillop have all made a fine impression in the early portion of this season. Also, we may not have brought in much through free agency, but I look back on the available guys and I don’t see many names that would have been worth the money to bring in and play over who we’ve got.
There have been times to bash McC, but I really don’t think that this is one of them.
My pessimism goes to the point of suspecting the sincerity of the pessimists.
I think McC did good this year with the draft
If Crabtree hadn’t fallen to number 10 the 49ers would have picked Oher. But he couldn’t pass on Crabtree. As I recall during the draft everyone here was happy we got him.
A top 3-4 OLB wasn’t available in the second so he traded that pick and a 4 for a number 1 next year which is loaded with talent.
I would like to see a RT a OG and an OLB/Pass Rusher in the 2010 draft.
"Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, either way, YOU'RE RIGHT !"
Agreed.
I’m not sold on Hill or the receiving corps after this game, but preseason isn’t time to fire a GM unless your ego needs to say I told you so.
I saw lots of good, new talent this camp. Unfortunately, there are some big questions still in the air and they won’t get answered until the season starts. Go read some of the camp reports from other teams. There’s only a handful of teams with all their questions seemingly answered.

If Hill gets injured?
I think it won’t be difficult to find another guy who can throw 4.7 yards per attempt in a game… Seriously, we need a better answer at QB.
If Sheets passes through waivers it will be a big mistake.
Hopefully they carry Robinson as a fullback and Brit Miller as a 3rd TE, due to Coffee and Gore I’d release Robinson to keep Sheets. I wish he had reps with the first offense. The O-Line looked like POO and so did the DL and OLB’s. Maybe Justin Smith should have been converted to OLB (jk).

I would love to see what he has with the 1’s. If he can pass the ball and read the defenses as well against the 1’s, we might have ourselves a winner. Reminds me a little of Warren Moon the way he throws. Maybe that’s just me.. Love Davis’s accuracy and how he refused to give up when they were 3 rd and forever and he just heaved it up hoping for a miracle…. his prayer was answered. I like lucky players. Start Hill for a series or two, Alex Smith (he should be fine?) for a few series, and Nate Davis can get significant playing time against better defenses.

You know something?
When you compare the Niners first half Monday at work around the watercooler to the RayDUHZ first half, I think the Niners did a little better. Like they were still in the game at the half… like they actually arrived at the game and played, unlike the RAY DUHZ! The RAY DUHZ looked epically bad! I mean go home and put a bag over your head bad! No one at your work place better be coming up to you with the bs “the niners lost the first half and thats all that counts” ! The Cowboys didnt pull their 1st string defensive linemen till the 4th qtr. The Niners played their 1’s till the 4th qtr. It was an even game going into the 4th

He’s definitely taking this “building through the draft” to a whole new level. I’d be a little more forgiving if he got one of the three correct: Alex Smith, Marvel Smith and Manny Lawson. The final verdict is far from over but right none of those decisions are looking good.
It does look he found Coffee, Davis and RJF in the draft. I really like all those guys. I’m on the fence with Scott McKillop.
No GM deserves credit for rookie free agents. Essentially rookie FA get offers from several teams, than they decide with their agent which team gives them the best chance of making an NFL roster. It’s sorta an indictment that talented players like Kory Sheets and Alex Boone agreed to try out for this team.
Finally, I would not make the comparison to Holgrem. Holgrem may not have netted a lot of players per draft but he’d hit big on one or two players. I’d rather gain one Pro Bowler per draft than three serviceable players.

Picked an OT that hadn’t missed all of last season with a back injury.
Made a decision on Alex Smith . . . he still hasn’t made one.
Ok, there wasn’t a lot of pass rush specialist options unless the team was foolish and bought the Peppers/Ellis farm. By all accounts they barely made an effort to pursue anyone.
I don’t want revisit the draft too much but part of the reason we traded the 2nd round pick was because we sat pat while other teams traded and targeted the players on our board. Our potential CB and NT are in NE camp.
Made a decision on Alex Smith . . . he still hasn’t made one.
Yes he has, Alex Smith is the back-up.
He can leave in 2 years after his contract (which pays him back-up money) is over.
by SportsChicken on Aug 29, 2009 11:45 PM PDT up reply actions
But he was involved in making sure that Smith made backup money...
which played a large role in the coaching staff’s decision to put him on the bench.
My pessimism goes to the point of suspecting the sincerity of the pessimists.
The reason why he is benched is because..
He is ineffective. ScotM still believes Smith can start for this team. The real question is when, and if Hill stinks it up, would there be a controversy over Smith vs Davis? If Davis becomes the #2 QB, then I will see a real decision on Smith.
Well, we're waiting....
Yep
Sending Alex to the bench was a Singletary decision. Although, watching Hill the last two games Alex might be our QB for most of the season. He did more having the WR’s muff his poor touch passes than Hill has done so far this preseason.
Giving Snyder a shot to play exclusively at RT was also a Singletary decision.
I don't see Hill as a true QB 1..
It could be the Miller High Life talking right now. I dunno. He looked bad out there last night. The Cowboys made a lot of mistakes, yet they still dominated the first half in TOP and yards. Battle was the only WR who had catches. That flat out sucks.
Well, we're waiting....
Somehow it’s always Battle. Ever notice when the team is at it’s worst Battle is performing at his best.
This isn't very specific
Picked an OT that hadn’t missed all of last season with a back injury.
Who? Who’s going to be much better than Snyder?
Made a decision on Alex Smith . . . he still hasn’t made one.
What decision is there to make? They can’t cut him right now because of the cap hit, so what else can they do besides make him a backup?
Ok, there wasn’t a lot of pass rush specialist options unless the team was foolish and bought the Peppers/Ellis farm.
So you wouldn’t have done anything differently?
I don’t want revisit the draft too much but part of the reason we traded the 2nd round pick was because we sat pat while other teams traded and targeted the players on our board. Our potential CB and NT are in NE camp.
Well the draft is the most important part of the offseason, so if you liked the draft I don’t think you can say the FO did too bad. If the guys on our board we’re going earlier that means we’d have to trade up to get them. WEhat would you have traded to get them? Are you willing to sacrifice one of the later picks (ie: Coffee, Davis, or McKillop) plus the first rounder we got in return to get one of those players? (I’m assuming your referring to Brace, Chung, or Butler).
It’s easy to criticize McCloughan but I think it’s tough to say what we would have done differently. The team was in bad shape this offseason, unfortunately you can’t fill all the holes in one year.
by Brendan Scolari on Aug 30, 2009 12:01 AM PDT up reply actions
It is tough to say what you would have done differently. Only the GM knows the million or so options that came across his table. However you can judge him based the moves he has made, which so far he’s done about nil to improve the team for this season.
I really don’t see how I am stepping out a limb here. The same weakness in last year’s team were not addressed and are now carried over to this year’s team. Essentially this season is going to come down to whether Singletary is a better coach than Nolan because McCloughan didn’t add any new tools for Singletary to use.
Agreed that this is the same team
Still though, I think McCloughan had a good draft, extended some key players, and did the right thing by not overpaying for a Peppers or Haynesworth (in trade and free agency, respectively). The thing is a team like the Niners isn’t really ready to contend so most quick fixes aren’t really going to help the team much.
I don’t know, he has made a lot of mistakes in his tenure as GM, but I think this offseason was good. There was probably a better OT that could have been had in free agency but nothing that would have changed this team’s fortunes much IMO.
by Brendan Scolari on Aug 30, 2009 1:03 AM PDT up reply actions
He is in his second year as GM..
So you would have to rate his first year as one to really base his performance. Like we qualify players to a sample size, the same should apply to ScotM.
As a Personnel guy, he gets a C+ grade. That grade could be better if he had a good FO, which gets a D- grade overall.
ScotM has done a good job within his environment, but he needs help.
Well, we're waiting....
I meant since 2005
Whatever his title has been during those years. I didn’t say he didn’t need help, only that I think he did a decent/good job this offseason.

IN TROUBLE WITHOUT PASS RUSH
Niners will be seeing Kurt Warner twice, Matt Ryan, Peyton Manning, and Donovan McNabb.. It’s hard to win these games without any pass rush threat. Nate Clements will probably get burned a few times on these games too if he doesn’t improve.
Wait until the start of the regular season
They are still not really game-planning, and Manny Lawson needs a LOT of work on his moves.
Maybe the pass rush will improve as the season goes on.

Nate Davis
I didn’t get to watch the game, but from the highlights Nate looked very good in the pocket, avoiding the rush very nicely. I think we’re forced to carry this guy on the active roster, I don’t think he’ll pass through waivers.
I hope we can find a trade partner for Smith, which is doubtful. The way Nate has been playing he’s certainly worthy of the QB3 role. He may not be playing the best opponents, but at least he’s not stinking against the scrubs.
by Andrew Davidson on Aug 30, 2009 12:27 AM PDT reply actions
WILL Y'ALL SHUT UP ABOUT HOLMGREN ALREADY!?!??!
I just don’t get you guys. Do you even read the Golden Nuggets? Do you even watch the games? Our draft this year is bursting with gems (Coffee, McKillop, Davis, RJF, Crabtree, maybe even Taylor).
As far as right tackle, Snyder has looked quite good so far and will only get better as he gets more used to playing only one position. Sims didn’t look any worse tonight than the rest of the line (no repeats of the Miami game at least). Than of course we also have the potential beast Alex Boone. To rephrase, we got a solid starter, a weaker but hopefully serviceable backup, and a hot young rookie. Sounds like a good situation to me.
As far as pass rush, we
(a) Don’t game-plan for the pre-season. Guys just show up and hit each other so to speak.
(b) Find out what does and doesn’t work
© Give the starters only minimal time to get into a groove and look for a weak spot.
The coaches aren’t worried about the pass rush, I trust the coaches, I am not worried about the pass rush. Simple as that. With Haraalson, Brooks, Lawson, and Briggs I think we’ll mange to get the necessary pressure.
As far as the QB situation, Hill always comes through in the clutch. I’m not worried about him. If he goes down, Smith can’t be as bad as you-know-who. Just from that I think we’ll win more games than last year. (9-7, 10-6 anybody?). Nate Davis has looked rock solid so far against the scrubs. Almost a man-among-boys type of deal even. If he can just learn to step it up one more level we’ll be fine. Again, just like the RT situation. We have a solid starter, a weaker but serviceable back-up, and a hot young rookie.
Since Scot McCloughan has been out of Nolan’s shadow he has made good low-risk, high-reward signings. The only blot on his record so far is Marvel Smith. However, we didn’t lose much by that experiment, and if it had worked out we would have had a pro-bowl RT.

LOL..
Look, having a guy like Holmgren in any capacity would help Scot more than hurt him. Scot’s made a few mistakes because of his lack of experience as a GM. It isn’t all about the draft. Holmgren could be a big asset to Jed. Anybody who was a pupil of Walsh has a lot to bring to the table.
I don’t want Holmgren as GM. I want him to help the FO.
Well, we're waiting....
Scot's a pupil of Wolf and Holmgren..
Bringing Holmgren in would be a good thing.
Well, we're waiting....
Let me add to this..
Jed, Holmgren, ScotM, and Singletary…
Holmgren works with Jed on re-establishing Walsh’s organizational principles, which benefits ScotM, and Singletary can focus on just being a Head Coach, who will benefit from all of that, and be the Head Coach of the 49ers for ten years, as opposed to trying to coach a flailing team due to a weak FO, and gets the blame for 3 years of mediocrity, thus getting fired.
We saw John York’s model, which was Nolan and his autonomy. Jed needs Holmgren and so does ScotM.
Well, we're waiting....
To add further..
Holmgren has worked with both Walsh and Wolf. That’s a bonanza.
Well, we're waiting....

Damon Huard
From Matt Maiocco: " —QB Damon Huard played just one series. He completed 2 of 4. It’s unknown whether Huard will remain with the team. The 49ers have fielded some calls about Huard’s availability."
What do you guys think, could we trade him?

YES
Nate Davis already has his roster spot. If we can get a 6th round pick for Damon Huard than he’s already our most productive free agent of the offseason.
That would be nice
We’ll see if anyone is willing to trade anything for him.

Maybe its just me...
…and maybe Im crazy, but with Davis showing the potential that he is, and Huard running the offense well, is there a chance Alex Smith becomes the odd man out in this equation? Hes proven not to be durable, and while yes, it seems the organization is sitll all about his upside, if Nate Davis is determined to have a better upside, and we cant risk putting him on the Practice squad, maybe Alex ends up getting released? It seems more likely Huard is the odd man out in this equation, and he probably is, however at this point he seems a much more solid option than Smith if Hill gets hurt, and its a roll he fulfills well. If Davis is deemed a better long term solution, well, I just wonder how this will all shake down anyway. Guess well find out.
interesting query
I think that might be worth a front page post.

Only if you really need a QB and someone else does too.
Then you give up a sixth or seventh round. Otherwise, Huard may be there if we get an injury midseason.
