49ers cut 5 players
Well then, that was pretty quick. The 49ers just announced that they've released 5 players to meet the 75-man roster requirement:
WR Mark Bradford
WR Chris Francies
K Alex Romero
CB Carlos Thomas
CB Jahi Word-Daniels
None of these roster moves is really all that surprising given our earlier discussion of the topic.
The 49ers next deadline is to cut down to 53 players by September 5. The 49ers final preseason game is the night before so they'll get one last chance to see what they've got from folks before making their decision. I'll have a new 53-man roster projection fairly early in the week.

I really enjoyed
watching Carlos Thomas. He’s the only one on this list that I’m dissapointed to see.

I figured Thomas or maybe JWD would be PS possibles. I guess the depth in the secondary means the coaches need to see the other guys play and find out who will earn their roster spot.

Just because...
… they get cut now, it does not mean they can’t still be PS’d in a week. If anything, by being cut now, they clear waivers long before next week, right?

True
Usually you cut the PS guys last as most teams will have their rosters set and not claim them. Plus they can get lost in the waiver wire wash. Now they can be signed and play in a game for another team. That said, I think these guys got cut because there is already a log-jam at DB.

Game Replay
Watching the Dallas game for first time, on NFL Network, and first half is over. Quarterback play of Hill was bad, not just unimpressive, but the team played pretty well otherwise. There was more pressure on Dallas QB than the discussion suggest. Passing game was truly awful. Weird to be watching players already cut though. If this is the big test, they passed. Now it is mid third quarter and still 10 to 3. Hardly a disaster in this new stadium circus environment. My biggest reaction is that the 49ers have a lot of passing weapons if they can get it together to use them. Perhaps the offense will gel, with Crabtree, in the early 2nd quarter of the season, and the defense needs to keep them in the game till then.

The real problem..
Other than Hills weak are and accuracy is our pass-protection. It’s the polar opposite of our run blocking. Defense is pretty bad but I’m still hoping that’s just do to vanilla play calling. Manny, and Clements are both sucking pretty bad.

I think once Snyder and Baas get back the OL will be ok.
Also I think there are things they have been doing to see players in normal circumstances. I believe that once the regular season starts there will be more variety in the passing game and also in the pass rush. Sing did say that the offense will be mostly on the run.

Manny and Clements
Agreed they appear to be playing poorly. Clements is hitting hard, even tackling well the running backs. He just seems too big , cautious, and slow, more like a safety. But he seems to go in streaks of great and poor play, and so could very well bounce back. Maybe that’s why Sign is brining along Spencer suddenly? I’ve simply can’t remember Lawson every playing well—I’m sure there was a time—so he seems like mere potential to me. Don’t get the fascination with him.

Yes for Manny
Late in his rookie season. Remember the athletic INT in St. Louis? He came along late that year and had a solid pre-season and first two games before getting injured in 2007. You would be correct about last season as he was recovering from injury and played mostly on 1st downs. In other words, it’s been almost two years since you’ve seen any memorable plays from him.
I worry/wonder about Clements. I thought they should move him to safety before goldson was promoted. Many top corners become excellent safeties late in their career (Lott, Woodson). Even Merton hanks started as a nickel corner. Clements has the size, range and tackling ability. He just seems to get beat on double moves and too often is beat deep one on one. He would likely be better in center field.

so much for my
Carlos Thomas bandwagon. I never even got around to starting it, but I still hate to see him go. I was hoping he’d land on the practice squad.
I take full responsibility for my irresponsibility.

How often do players from the first cut wind up on the PS?
Anyone have a good sense?
Is it almost always players from the last cut?

Cuts and practice squads. And Pierson Prioleau.
Since the first cuts aren’t as good as the last cuts, the odds are longer. And since they’re out there there’s more possibilities to getting picked up by someone else.
Anyone remember when Pierson Prioleau was in the Niners’ camp? I remember he impressed me in preseason back in, what was it, 1999? He didn’t stick, but he’s managed to make a long career in the NFL. I heard his name called Saturday in a Saints uniform thumping Raiders.
So the moral of the story is that even when it’s over it’s not over. Carlos Thomas could be climbing out of the coffin to break up a pass or deliver a hit again.

Hill in practice this week.
The passing game in the first half to suck. I didn’t see many drooped balls or bad routes. Hill was not very sharp at all and the pass protection broke down really quick. Wish Hill had as much time as Romo did on a few plays. It will interesting to see how Hill practices this week. It may be that his back was bothering him more than was publicized. There was quite a stink made after Singletary announced him as starter and then the next he has a back strain. It could be that there was some pressure from the FO to put him in there.. Don’t know but was a bit strange.
