It's too late now but...
I can't help but wonder what would've happened had the 49ers drafted an offensive tackle instead of Rod Tidwell, er, Michael Crabtree with the 10th pick of the draft. (Though to be fair, at least the fictional Tidwell was an established player who sought more money, and Eugene Parker is no Jerry Maguire; but I digress) Of course, hindsight is 20/20 but I do think we got caught up in the hype and lost focus of our problem areas. Lest we forget, the team gave up 55 sacks last season. To solve this dilemma, we went after a washed up player in Marvel Smith (missed 15 games in the past two seasons and 29 games since 2003.) and now we're in a real pickle because he retired.
Michael Other was still available at the 10th slot. The Niners also could've moved up to grab Eugene Monroe or Andre Smith. I do remember some debating the merits of going after someone to shore up our defensive line as well. And then there were people who really wanted Crabtree. Hell, I was a bit excited about him falling to us initially. Still, you had to wonder how he would get the ball if Shaun Hill didn't have time to get it to him. Having watched the pre-season games, the offensive line looked mediocre and the defensive line didn't look very strong even against the lowly Raiders. That last game against the Cowboys was especially troubling. However, the past is the past and we can only make adjustments here in the present.
As throughly discussed by fooch on the main page, we can stick with players like Barry Sims and Alex Boone. Conversely, we can bring in a top free agent. A third option that wasn't discussed in the main article but in the comments section was that of a trade. I believe this is the course we should take. The question to me really becomes a matter of how much we want to give up. One of those 2 shiny first round picks would get us someone really good. I like Pro Bowler Jason Peters. He's young (27) and very good. It took the Eagles a first and fourth rounder to get him though so we'd probably also have to throw in that as well as something else. Perhaps a three team deal where we trade Alex Smith and the picks away. (The Eagles are already quite deep at quarterback) If that is too rich for your blood, then at least send a second rounder and maybe Smith for Matt Light. He's a bit older (31) but still very good. While we're at it, perhaps we could also pick up a pass rusher.
I'm not as sure where the problem lies with our pass rush. I think Justin Smith is serviceable. I'm content with the linebackers. I think Issac Sopoaga and Aubrayo Franklin are to blame. (Though I'm also not a fan of the 3-4) The free agent list looks ugly for defensive tackle. I looked on scout.com like fooch and seen players such as Dewayne "Who?" Robertson and Brain "Yawn" Young are still available. Available defensive ends aren't very appealing either. I do like Vonnie Holliday but he's well past his prime. Would trading for say Aaron Kampman be too much to ask for? Bottom line is that I feel that we need to make a couple key acquisitions in order to both give Hill some time in the pocket and put some pressure on opposing quarterbacks. Otherwise, I fear it's gonna be one long season..

You're right...
Thanks. Though I hope we go after someone of his caliber via trade.

Add Moran Norris to the Bad FA signings
Moran Norris?
Unless a player retires or is put on IR, shouldn’t you reserve judgment until the season starts?

On what scale have you judged that a blocking fullback has been "outplayed" by so many others?
My pessimism goes to the point of suspecting the sincerity of the pessimists.
Are you kidding
He was lead block in Gore’s best season, and Smith was the starter so you know ther was always 8 in the box
AKA.............Optimist Prime
"Me, I want what's coming to me" And what's that? "The world Chico, and everything in it"
Wasn't he bad in goal-line situations?
My memory is foggy.

I think.
And his pass-blocking is suspect. Although I think he was a fine addition simply because Zak Keasey was so mind-numbingly awful.

This. Sooooo this. I don’t think Norris is close to being a top FB, but his run-blocking is probably at least slightly above-average, and that should help Gore. Whether or not it’ll help out the passing game is a totally different situation.
I don't see Norris being on the field much in passing situations.
With Bruce/Crabs/Morgan at WR and Davis/Walker at TE, I would imagine that we’ll be seeing the single-back formation almost exclusively on 3rd-and-7+

Great foresight
If only any of these front office types thought of that.

If I recalll correctly...
… Jason Peters is as much a liability as most of the other tackles on the FA heap this past offseason. He may have had a Pro Bowl attached to his name, but we all know that “award” means very little in terms of current skill or ability.

since the off-season......
I’ve wondered about Julius Peppers. He doesn’t want to be in Carolina, and wants to play in a 3-4. Playing under a hall-of-famer would be a plus, also.
With 2 first round picks for next year, maybe something could be worked out (unless we really need 2 more unproven head cases and/or underachievers that seem to come with our 1st round picks).
As far as the O-line, I think they will come around soon. Snyder, for all the problems he had last year, played better in the second half, And in my opinion, played better than Jennings or Sims.

There should be a filter...

then how about
herbs and spices sprinkled throughout?
(weak humor I know, I wasn’t here for any previous talk of (un-named DE) sorry.

Meant to post that in response to nocal81 praising the Tidwell joke ...
… and to compound the fact I am an idiot, I’m now replying to myself, which is never a good look …
This isn't Madden
You can’t just force teams to trade their players. Why would either the Eagles or the Pats trade their “franchise” LT’s when they expect to contend this year? They’d sacrifice a year of contention to pick up a first rounder? No, sorry, but trades like this are absolutely out of the question.
I’ve said this before but i don’t think trading for a veteran like the players you mentioned would be the right move even if such trades were possible. The Niners aren’t one player away from contending, there’s no use in trading cheaper, younger, high upside players for older, expensive veterans. It won’t make the difference this year and will hurt the team in future years.
Crabtree Saga
Thank God this is coming to an end! Scott McCloughan finally said they’re confident in signing him. We’ve had our ups and downs, but I think Singletary benches him up until the 10th week or so. The guy doesn’t even know one play in the playbook (not that Nate Davis does) and should atleast be punished for being an ass.
McCloughan's...
… always been confident Crabtree will sign. The 49ers don’t lose as much as Crabtree does in the whole mess. The most they lose is one productive year of Crabtree or a draft pick. Crabtree could basically lose his livelihood.
I love how McCloughan is handeling this
Here are the offers:
Offer 1:what a 10th overall pick deserves
Offer 2:what a 5th overall pick deserves
Offer 3:go to hell

I don't think they offered
anything close to what the 5th pick got
Still defending Rich Aurilia, and the Niners' classic unis
yeah they did
and they’re negotiating now, but not getting anywhere.

Uh.
All reports (and there has been NOTHING definite) are saying the 49ers have offered him money that is around what a 10th pick should expect to receive. There is no negotiating going on because the 49ers are basically saying that’s the only offer you’re getting, so you sign as a #10 pick, or you don’t.
If the 49ers offered him #5 money, he would have taken it in a heartbeat, as that would have been a serious win for him. It would have been an even bigger fail for the 49ers.
Yeah...
I can say with certainty that they have not offered Crabtree #5 money. Crabs would be in camp right now if he were offered that kind of change out of the #10 slot, but the 49ers are sticking to their guns in holding firm to their offer.
My pessimism goes to the point of suspecting the sincerity of the pessimists.
I heard a report....
saying that Grabtree was offered guaranteed money equal to what Raji got at 9, with incentives too. Yet, Grabtree continues to be an idiot.
With possibly/likely changes in the CBA next year, this is about the stupidest thing he could be doing.
With each passing day, I’m more sure that there is a reason 9 other teams passed on him.

You do realize that Crabtree will get extremely low playing time this season because of this extended holdout?
No training camp practices, no preseason appearances, adjusting from a spread offense, etc…

I’m planning for the worst.
I’ve already come to terms with him never playing for the 49ers.

Playing time
His playing time will be limited to about a fourth of the season because he doesn’t even know what West Coast Offense is!
