Should we be embarassed to be bay area sports fans?....
The 49ers have been crap for the last 6 7 years or so. The A's who have been good have been terrible this year. Last year it seemed they traded away all of there best players and this year also. The raiders will be the raiders and everybody outside of raider fans just laugh at them. All so called professional analysts just tear the raiders up with either negative comments or jokes. The sharks blow it in the playoffs but are a good franchise. The Giants are the toast of the bay area but they have made bad with signing zito who has been playing well. They also have the Bonds case going around if you want to add that.
But the question will the 49ers raiders or giants shed some light on the bay area sports? I hope so.

As a born and die
Giants and Niners fan, I personally (albeit optimistically) feel that both teams are young and at the beginning of some good things. I’d love to include the W’s in that group but I gotta watch them play for a couple weeks. Curry, AR, Monta, & Biedrins isn’t a terrible nucleus to build around. So now we just gotta prove it.
Yeah i forgot about the warriors
Too bad Baron Davis bounced we had a good thing. Now people say that as long as don nelson is our coach then we are not going anywhere. At least he brought us somewhere.
Not as bad as being a Seattle sports fan.
"Part, fools!
Put up your swords. You know not what you do."
Remember 2002?
-The A’s rocked the west with 103 wins.
-The Giants took the NL wild card.
-The 49ers won 10 games and brought us the wild card comeback against the NYG.
-The Raiders had homefield throughout the playoffs
-The Sharks had taken their division
-Cal football welcomed Jeff Tedford and their first winning season in almost a decade…
I remember thinking back then about how lucky we were to be seeing so much success in bay area sports. I’m really glad now that I didn’t take it for granted, because it may be a long while before we get to bask in something that sweet again.
My pessimism goes to the point of suspecting the sincerity of the pessimists.

You forgot the Warriors
21 wins: best season in 5 years in 2002.
"It is amazing how much can be accomplished if no one cares who gets the credit." - Coach John Wooden
Yes
And frankly, I don’t know how you guys walk around like that.
and up rode a camargue horse named Victory, upon the magnificent beast sat a triumphant rider, that rider's name: Noodle Arm.
You forgot the Warriors
Amazing how bad they’ve been for so long. And the one year they showed promise their best player bolts during the offseason. Yuck! Why doesn’t that ever happen to the Lakers?
I keep hoping the Niners will turn things around this year but too many things are starting to go wrong. . . again . . .they turned their back on Greg Ellis in free agency. They are not able to talk sense into Crabtree or his agent. Brandon Jones gets hurt. I’m thinking to myself . . .why do the Patriots steal guys like Moss and now Burgess from the Raiders while we stand pat? Why do we not see the holes our team has like they do? Why do we insist all is well instead of insisting (like they would in NY) that ownership shape up, step up, and pull off something daring that turns this thing around? Too much reliance on Singletary to save the day. Feels like they’re setting him up, frankly. Feels like Bush setting up Colin Powell during the WMD thing.
Bottom line, Jed: Not enough push to get great players in here yet to fill holes. You have to work harder, and pay up.
So am I embarrassed to be a bay area sports fan? More to the point, am I embarrassed to be a 49ers fan? . . . .Gettin’ there.
Couldn't agree with you more!
I’ve been preaching it for months brother. In fact, I had to take a break from this site becasue all I hear is how great Josh Morgan is and that we don’t need a Houshmanzadeh or a Cassell or a Cutler or a Hayneswroth or a Gonzo. We don’t chase FA’s becasue the Yorks could gave a flying f-bomb. Our FO is a joke, Jed is a puppet who has no control of the pursestrings, and the Yorks DO NOT CARE about putting a winner on the field. We did nothing in the FA game over the summer and we’re going to go under 500 again. Absolutely pathetic. 7-8 straight seasons of total mediocraty.
I can’t help but wonder what a leader like an Art Blank would have done for this organization. The guy managed his franchise out of a failed coaching debacle midseason and a henious criminal inditement of his franchise QB….and he did this in less than (1) season through FA signings and sound draft day decicions. Yet the Yorks can’t get there hands around a negiotiating a contract with a rookie. It’s taken them (7) years to get to this point. I’m over it….
And Fooch-who cares about a DB breakdown??Why don’t you write about something relevant. No one cares about what the bloggers around the league says.

Stuck in the 80's
Boo-hoo cry cry. Walsh is not the coach, Eddie isn’t the owner Boo-hoo. News flash! Those guys had a hand in the 9ers downfall as well. I’ll give you a small break down of the FA and Draft for the 9ers.
Signed:
Clements
Justin Smith
Michael Lewis
Franklyn
Walt Harris
Spikes
Bruce
All have had a positive effect on the team and the Yorks forked out big money for them.
Draft:
Willis
Gore
Haralson
Morgan
Staley
Every team makes bad draft decisions. It’s nothing new. What more do you want? Haynesworth? I would’nt drop $100 million on him. Cassell? Good player but do you really want to give up that much for a player w/ 1 good year under his belt? And face it, the Cheifs got a good deal due to being buddy buddy w/ the Pats. Cutler would’ve been nice but oh well, that one I’ll give you. Housh? Are you kidding me.?! Talk about a player that had the benefit of having a Super-Star opposite of him in OchoCinco. He won’t be nearly as productive in Seattle.
I don’t know what you’re whinning about. The Yorks the last couple of years have done everything they can to get this team on the right track. If you can’t see that then there is no helping you. Go jump the yearly Cowboys bandwagon.
Fans stuck in the 80's are lame. Respect the past, live in the now.
Cutler...
Cutler would’ve been nice but oh well, that one I’ll give you.
The guy can play but man did u see what the bears gave for him? I’d be more pissed if the 49ers tried topping it and got Cutler…
Just would've been nice to see what the 9ers would offer
Fans stuck in the 80's are lame. Respect the past, live in the now.
As far as I could tell, the Bears were pretty much the only team that had a chance to get Cutler in the first place. McDaniels pretty much coveted getting Orton from the start. I don’t think the Niners EVER had a chance, and if they did they would have had to give up a much larger bounty.

Cassell?
Cassell who i hope has a good career does remind me of the Bills backup who had the biggest come back in playoff history. He ended up getting a huge contract with another team and was a huge bust.
I believe it was Frank Reich (thank you wikipedia)
It says he was pulled later in favor of a rising Kerry Collins
Your actually satisfied....
With the FA acquisitions you listed above??? And your defending the Yorks. Wow. What a true fan you are. Haha! That is also amazing being that they’re consistantly ranked as some of the worst owners in pro sports. Go ahead and name me a few NFL teams that have been as bad as the Niners have for AS LONG as the niners have. Please, I’m dying to hear this. In fact, can someone tell me what teams have had a longer playoff drought? Fooch, I’m sure you’ll respond so please enlighten us.
What a great arguement though Maverick, defend the niners FO and the Yorks. They have really represented us well.

question
Are you at all happy with any of the acquisitions mentioned? You’re saying Takeo Spikes, or Isaac Bruce, or Justin Smith have not been good acquisitions? Walt Harris went to the Pro Bowl his first year with the 49ers then got old. I’m a fan of Michael Lewis for his run-support.

How bout the draft picks?
Youre saying none of those draft picks I mentioned have stood out? And as far as the last 3 years are concerned, I have supported the Yorks 100%. They have forked out a ton of money to get FA’s to come and play for a crap team. If youd like I can get you a list of the contracts they divied out to the FA’s I mentioned. Looks to me like they have been doing all they can to get good players. And might I mention they are trying to get us a new fricken stadium?!

Not About the Bay Area
It’s about the owners. And what we are focusing on here is that the Yorks are not the kind a rabid owners that would do anything at any cost to make the 49ers great again. Would Eddie D have gotten great players in FA? Would Eddie D have let the Niners sink down into a league of misfits with the likes of the Raiders and Al Davis? I don’t think so. That’s the issue. When the h*** are the Yorks going to step up with the right players and give Singletary something to work with?
Who, you ask? Greg Ellis would have been a small step in the right direction. Getting a big time OL free agent with a healthy back could have helped. You know, one that actually cost serious money?
Getting a great WR could have helped, which would have negated the necessity of drafting a prima dona with fairyland expectations at pick 10.
And getting one of many excellent safeties in free agency would have helped a lot.
BECAUSE these are already proven players, many of them still young and in their prime. Ready to contribute NOW. Not in three years. Compare that to taking a shot on a rookie in the draft, overpaying for them, then having to watch them for at least a year to see if they were even worth the pick! This makes no sense to me.
We could have and should have filled holes through free agency and had great players ready to go, at safety, nose tackle, pass rush, o-line and even wide receiver. If after all that we had no cap space left for rookies in a weak draft, then TRADE the picks until we have a boatload of them in a future year, WHILE WE ALSO ALREADY HAVE a great player at each position that was previously a position of need because of using free agency to our advantage.
Look at the Pats! Yeah, they drafted Brady. Great pick! But they also got Moss for a 4th round pick, and picked up a massive number of proven vets in free agency who wanted nothing more that to win. Corey Dillion to name one, and so many guys on defense. They know how to use the system and play it to their advantage. (By the way, their draft picks over the years have NOT been amazing outside of the Bradey pick.) It’s free agency that has powered them forward year after year.
I’m waiting for the Yorks to start learning a lesson here and do the same for our team and our fans.
Come on! Let’s stop pretending. Let’sget the Niners back into contention for a Super Bowl. We have a decent core of players. We need the holes to be filled in by pro bowl vets, not rookies or cast offs. We have room in the cap to do a lot of interesting things if some cap creativity is used. How do the Pats do it? They just do!
Then we will have ourselves a Super Bowl team. Not just a hopeful contender in a weak division. Then all this stuff about how bad Bay Area teams are will have a huge asterisk next to it: * except for the 49ers. . . .

draft picks haven't been amazing?
Let’s see:
Defensive Line: DE Ty Warren, DE Richard Seymour, DT Vince Wilfork
Offensive Line: OT Matt Light, OG Logan Mankins, C Dan Koppen,
LB Tedy Bruschi, CB Asante Samuel, WR Deion Branch, WR David Givens (solid contributor), QB Matt Cassel, CB Ellis Hobbs, LB Jerod Mayo, SS Brandon Meriweather, TE Ben Watson
And I’d imagine more….
Sure they’ve missed on plenty of picks, but I’d say the draft has been pretty important to their success

Eddie D...
Eddie has already come out and said that he really had the luxury of not worrying about the salary cap during the glory days. And he did cause the yorks some problems with some of his deals during the salary cap era… I think we are still using cap space to pay off JJ Stokes… Oh and Terry Donahue…
Perfectly written 79...
I could not agree more. Bottom LIne (and this hurts the most): The Yorks are NOT bad business people obviously. Quite the contrary…they are from a long line of very successful and very fortunate individuals. What slays me is that they don’t give a f@#$% about making our franchise a priority, and they haven’t in nearly a decade. Yet, most of the comments on this page..this site…even the “editor” defends them.
Fooch-thanks for the breakdown on the Pats draft picks. Not what I was hoping to get your take on though….
Whats your take on the Art Blank comment I posted above?
Whats the answer on teams with a longer play-off drought than the 49ers?
How many teams in the NFL have, other than the 9ers, have had below .500 seasons for the past 7 years.
Now please tell me again that the Yorks are doing the best they can, and that they take (meaning actually spending money) on all the nesscary steps to put a contender on the field. I look at teams like the Cowboys and the Redskins and find myself envious of their leadership. Does anyone else here??? At least Jones and Snyder try. 100% commited to putting a winner on the field and will take any risk neccsary. Even if it means failure. Because one of those times…like we just saw with the Cardinals…a GM will get the formula right and take a team to the dance. Both the Cowboys and Skins have been to the play-offs in the last seven seasons. More than once I believe.

Well they just said Buffalo hasn’t been to the playoffs in 10 years, so there’s 1. I’m out of town this weekend and will have to look up others later.
So you want an owner like Snyder who wants to put together a fantasy football team every year and has been proven to be unsuccessful in terms of success versus dollars spent. You’re more than welcome to want an owner like Snyder or Jones but I’m perfectly fine as is. I continue to think 49ers ownership has shown steady improvement. I’m pretty certain I can’t convince you otherwise given that you say they aren’t “actually spending money.” Maybe they don’t sign the guys you want but they HAVE spent money in bringing in free agents.
I’d actually like you to clarify a comment you made:
Yet the Yorks can’t get there hands around a negiotiating a contract with a rookie.
So you blame the Yorks because the 49ers won’t go over slot in negotiating with Crabtree? You think they should offer him whatever he wants? Do you understand what it means to have good business sense?
by David Fucillo on Aug 9, 2009 5:47 PM PDT up reply actions
Fooch...
Business sense, hillarios dude. Fooch I’m not going to argue with you on my career versus yours. What I’d really like to see is for you to grow a pair and just call a spade a spade dude. The FO is junk. In fact, please, start one of your polls. Lets see how the NN ranks the Yorks leadership over the past decade. Seriously…start the poll.
My god, your a bright guy, but telling me that you “continue to think the 49ers ownership has shown steady improvement.” is weak. What imporvement are you talking about dude? Where is the imporvment? We finished the year sub .500….again. That’s it, that is the fact.
And no, I don’t think the Yorks are negotiating Crabs contract directly. But I guarentee their walk away price is really low. Conservatively low. They do not take risks. They hold the gold and ultimately are responsable for this negotiation. And for the love of god, I do not trust their judgment in making the right decicion here as they’ve proved NOTHING to me.
I’ve said all along, I want to win now. Not later. I get it, your comfortable waitiing. Your hoping the Yorks keep making imporvements. And maybe someday…hopefully…when the timing is right…down the road..hopefully soon…the 49ers will be winners again. Hope is not a strategy David. I gravitate towards people, organizations, companies, leadership, that make things happen. Not people that sit around and wonder what happened. And that is why it is really painful. I love the niners, I love the players, I love the history, but I have no faith that we’re going to be a contender anytime soon because those whom hold the money simply don’t care about victories.

But can you tell me the $$ that a FA who has left the 49ers gotten with another team since, well, Peterson?
Well, we're waiting....
spending money
First, I’m a little confused by your question. You mean what 49ers free agents have left for bigger money since Peterson?
As far as owners having to spend money, I agree they do, but just because Snyder spends more than everybody else does not make him a better owner.
by David Fucillo on Aug 10, 2009 6:39 AM PDT up reply actions
Exactly...
Snyder has allways put fantasy teams together that had no chemestry at all. Sometimes it just doesnt matter how much money you throw down. Snyder is no better than the Yorks in my oppinion.
Fans stuck in the 80's are lame. Respect the past, live in the now.
I'm talking more about..
The homegrown players, and their value as FA’s. The only slam dunks are Gore and Willis, who would command a high $$ figure on the open market. Everybody else drafted is either mid tier to meh. Of course the 49ers are still a work in progress, and their picks are still young, but the point is, they are still around a 6-7 wins team, despite the outside FA acquisitions.
Well, we're waiting....
Who cares
Does it really matter if our home grown players have good value in the FA? No. As long as they are playing good together while on our team it doesn’t matter what their FA value will/would be.
Fans stuck in the 80's are lame. Respect the past, live in the now.

Well, we're waiting....
owners
And in response to your mentions of owners. I agree Arthur Blank has done a good job in Atlanta. Can’t disagree.
But let’s take a look at your boy Daniel Snyder. Just because he throws around money like it’s going out of style does not make him a good owner. Makes him interesting to watch, but not a good owner. Let’s take a look at the Snyder years in DC since he bought the team in 1999 (asterisk means playoff appearance).
1999: 10-6*
2000: 8-8
2001: 8-8
2002: 7-9
2003: 5-11
2004: 6-10
2005: 10-6*
2006: 5-11
2007: 9-7*
2008: 8-8
So basically he bought them two playoff spots (the first one came the year he bought the team, which happened after free agency and the draft were mostly done).
During all that time they won two playoff games (one his first year, one in 2005). Given how much money he has spent on free agents, that’s a pretty sad track record.
by David Fucillo on Aug 9, 2009 10:16 PM PDT up reply actions
Yes teams like the Cowboys and the Redskins...
What those teams have done hasnt meant jack crap considering the Cowgirls haven’t won a playoff game since their last superbowl 13 years ago! The Skins always put together good teams but can never win as long as Snyder has been the owner. If you’re that envious over them then by all means go jump their bandwagons and get let down at the end of the year. It’s probably more frustrating being one of their fans than being a 9er fan since clearly they have the talent to win but never do.
Fans stuck in the 80's are lame. Respect the past, live in the now.
Too lazy to get year by year records, but here's something:

i’ll always be proud to be a 9er fan. every team goes through a down time. i look at it this way: the 9ers are the only great franchise to have been garbage for over 7 yrs. the girls, bears, pats, steelers, etc have had good teams since then. i feel like the circle is slowly coming back around and it will be our time again…….n when it happens i can’t wait to verbally abuse all the bandwagon riders that inevitably will come out the woodworks to show love for the 9ers…….
