2009 49ers Training Camp: Open Thread

Apologies for the short nature of this thread.  I'm at BART waiting for a train to take me the San Francisco International Airport.  I'm heading down to Las Vegas to visit family and friends.  So more of a Las Vegas trip than a "Vegas" trip. Anyways here's Matt Barrows recap and Matt Maiocco's recap of practice this morning.  Both seem sort of heavy on Jimmy Raye.  He addressed the media, so hopefully I'll be able to add a transcript to this at some point.

For those curious about the QB battle (a.k.a. everybody), Barrows had an interesting line:

Shaun Hill and Alex Smith did a Freaky Friday thing on Saturday. Working with the first-team offense, Smith seemed content to throw mostly short passes and was an efficient 11 of 13 on the day. Hill, meanwhile, connected on his longest pass in team drills this training camp, a 40 yarder to a diving Arnaz Battle. Hill also was sharp, completing 6 of nine passes.

Barrows spends his recap looking more at practice, while Maiocco included a lot of details from Jimmy Raye's press conference.  I think SFO has free wi-fi, so if I can get on I'll add a little more to this post.

My impression so far

Hill and Smith are still in a dead heat. Surprise! Many observers noted Smith’s improvement. The offense is being installed in pieces and in has yet to come together.
We wont know much until it does.

Receivers are impressing as we expected. Sucks about Jones. But how about Zeigler?!
Vernon will be a feature. Pascoe seems a little slow in picking things up.

Nothing new on defense. As long as no one gets hurt we’re in good shape. Preseason will give us a taste of our pass rush capabilities.

Bear

It does seem like Bear Pascoe is picking things up slowly. After mini-camp, and OTA’s, it seemed like he would be good.
