San Francisco 49ers @ Arizona Cardinals: 4th quarter thread

That Shaun Hill TD drive shot up the comments so it's time for a final thread.  Time for the defense to step up!  It's been a crazy game and clearly we're going down to the wire with this one.

I thought we had more than 3 sacks. At least 4 and I thought I counted 5

by bignerd on Sep 13, 2009 4:50 PM PDT up reply actions

Huh

I counted that busted run early in the game where Warner was stuck with no one to hand off to. Smith must of had 2 sacks?

Jeez,

all Brett Favre, all the time. He was averaging five yards an attempt.

One good hit and he's done

he looked pretty shaken up when he threw that crack-back block in the preseason. He gets hit a couple of times and he’s going to be rethinking how much fun playings i.

Favre is a couple of years younger than I am, but he looks and moves like he's at least sixty.

i haven’t been kind to my body. I’m creaky and gimpy and I hurt. Got a minor case of scattered with CRS going on due to concussions. Then I see Favre on my TV and I don’t feel so bad after all. They need to have him bring his playbook to the coach’s office before he gets seriously injured, or destroys the Vlking’s season in a hail of bad passes.

For some reason

This game had me more nervous than any game in years. I really wanted this win for the niners because the first half of the schedule is pretty tough. We need these wins wherever we can get them

Simply great. Let’s keep them from winning the NFC West this year.

Also, I seem to see you on every SBN blog I go to, lol.

Me too.

I think this offseason I started caring again. That last year that opened up with Nolan coaching I felt dead inside.

Instant unit grading!

OFFENSE = D
OL = D – What offensive line?
RB = D – No OL, no running.
WR = B – under the circumstances, not bad.
QB = B – under great pressure, Hill tosses ducks, no mental errors.

DEFENSE = A
DL = B – J. Smith & Sopoaga played well
LBs = B+ – P. Willis was everywhere.
DBs = A+ – couldn’t ask for more. Outstanding!
Pass Rush = B – good pressure most of the game

SPECIAL TEAMS = A
Andy Lee gave us good field position all day.

COACHING = B
Manusky was perfect, Sing motivated, but it took Raye longer than necessary to beat the blitz.

HEART = A
Especially the defense.

I don't know which Just For Men commercial is worst.

The one with Emmitt catching the cheerleader or the one where the little girl talks her dad into dyeing his hair, getting off the couch and getting a job.

Niners win was the cake

But I have to say that the Panthers and Delhomme’s inefficiency was some mighty good icing. If they can’t get it together we may just get a high pick next year. Good first week!

by SanFranSoldier on Sep 13, 2009 4:57 PM PDT reply actions

Don’t get your hopes too high, the Eagles are a good team. That trade is still gonna look like a steal though even if we get something in the 10-16 range.

Hmmmm....

SF Defense - A+

SF Offense - B

SF Special Teams - B+

SF Coaching - A+

Tim Ryan - F (He said something like this: “The defenders on the defensive side …”)

AZ Cardinals Fans - F (Booed after Wilson was flagged for that personal foul hit on Vernon Davis and, late in the 4th quarter, the camera people of Fox showed a Cardinal fan holding up a TD signal after Gore was tackled in the AZ 1 yard line. Clearly, I think what he really meant was for a safety.)

Players of the game - SF Defense, Shaun Hill, Frank Gore for his blocking and the 2 TD’s, Andy Lee, and Joe Nedney.

Play of the Game - When coach called a TO to talk to his defense.

I couldn't watch the entire game unfortunately...

But while I was watching, the defense gave up a 40 yard bomb. Arizona put 16 points on them. I think you only give an A+ for a shutout or at least one defensive score. A- would be more appropriate. The pass rush showed up way more than I thought it would, getting a number of knockdowns and hurries and 3 sacks. That was pleasant to watch. I’m gonna drop the offense a whole letter grade. C. The line looked like hammered dogcrap. Sean Hill looked like Trent Dilfer on a heavy dose of Thorazine. Gore just looked slow. They did however, manage 20 points somehow, and they won the game. I’d give the coaching a B+. The defensive game plan looked to be spot on. Then again, if Raye tried to make any adjustments at the half, they didn’t work all that well. I’m OK with your special teams grade.

by asleepinSF on Sep 13, 2009 5:44 PM PDT up reply actions

Yes,

I do agree. I probably gave the O and the D a little too much credit. But, Raye did adjust a bit and gave the passing game a chance. Thanks.
