Grounded Expectations Against Renewed Optimism

First off i want to say how excited i am about our win against the defending NFC Champions on their home turf.  It could well be a defining victory for our franchise and our new head coach.  But we must remain grounded in our expecations and realize that it is just one game no matter how important it may have been.  In fact this game means absolutely nothing if the 49ers lay an egg and lose to Seattle in the home opener.  ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!! Let me take the optimistic approach for a second.  Frank Gore ran the ball 22 times for 30 yards and we still won the game.  The sign of a good team is still being able to win when your stars don't produce and the strength of your team isn't apparent.  Teams that end the season in the playoffs find a way to win these games no matter how ugly they are.  Also do any of us expect Frank Gore to be bottled up like that again in 2009?  I don't!!!

Secondly,  the 49ers hit Kurt Warner 8 times,  sacked him 3 times and pressured him 22 times.  These are numbers that our defense have not seen in a few seasons.  Granted Warner is the most immobile QB in the NFL,  but multiple times i saw our defense push their line back and that is a great sign.  We expect what we saw from Justin Smith and to some extent Parys Harrelson,  though he was just a monster all day.  But Manny Lawson,  although not recording a sack did pressure Warner a few times.  Now to the secondary.  Wow is all i have to say about their play, it was absolutely stunning.  Nate ClementsShawntae Spencer, Dre Bly,  Michael Lewis, Dashon Goldsen and yes even Mark Roman played a whale of a game.  Clements looked like the CB we signed from Buffalo,  even more so he looked incredibly improved from his first 2 seasons with the 49ers.  But i have always had faith in him as a corner.  The huge surprise of the game came from Shawntae Spencer who shoed shutdown ability,  yes you heard me right,  shutdown ability.  He blanketed Fitzgerald,  Moray and Bolden all game long.  In fact when matched up with Fitzgerald and Bolden he only allowed 3 receptions.  That is simply stunning for a player none of us really paid much attention to before Singletary named him starter.  If he can be that shutdown guy that will make our secondary that much better.  Of course it's easy to look good when the front 7 is putting pressure on the opposing QB all game long.  Patrick Willis,  well i will just say one thing "One of the best defensive players in the game,  he has the chance to be one of the best ever"

Now the bad,  Our offense looked predictable and stagnent all day up until that deciding drive.  David Baas played an absolutely horrible game and Adam Snyder looked overmatched at time.  Rachal and Staley were their usual solid selves.  One saving grace is that we do have Tony Pashos waiting in the wings to take over for Snyder at anytime and Tony Wragge has proven to be a solid guard when in the game so we are not without options.  "happy feet" Hill as i will call him looked really really really bad at times, like he didn't even belong in the NFL,  he missed wide opened receivers by not taking his eye off the #1 option,  staired down receivers at least 8 times.  When pressured it seemed he paid more attention to the defenders then the receivers and that is just not acceptable.  But the W is all that counts and he came through big time when it mattered.  22 rushes for 30 yards (Frank Gore),  well that cannot be blamed on him as stated above two of our offensive linemen looked lost all game and they must improve in order for our offense and team in general to be successfull

This was a big win for the 49ers,  but we have to put it in perspective.  We are a good team but our margin for error is slim and we must play better then that if we expect to win the division this season,  i expect us to play better in the coming weeks.  You only have to be better then your opponent on any given day and we were better then Arizona on Sunday.  The coming weeks will tell weather this team is ready to contend.  This is why.  We have three winnable games coming up in the next three weeks.  at home against Seattle and St. Louis and on the road against Minnesota.  The Seahawks as reported earlier on this site are going to be without Leroy Hill as well as Walter Jones and Marcus Trufant, Three of the teams best players. Of course the Seahawks looked good against St. Louis but c'mon so would my high school team LOL.  Which brings me to that game,  there is absolutely no reason why we cannot control that game against the Rams.  Minnesota looked beatable against Cleveland on Sunday well until AP broke loose like he usually does.  But our run defense is solid because of Willis and Spikes.  If we can contain Peterson to some extent (90-110 yards) then we have a good chance to pull off the upset against Minnesota.  The key to that game is ball control,  no mistakes and a good running game which will be hard against the Williams wall.  The point of this is to show that it isn't unreasonable to believe the 49ers can be 4-0 going.  If we end the first quarter of the season 2-2 then that will show that this team isn't ready for the big time in the NFC.  But if we can somehow pull out a 4-0 or 3-1 record then the rest of the NFL will have to pay attention to this tough,  passionate and solid team

The last time the 49ers played the Vikes

Didn’t we hold Peterson to 20 something yards? Stop Peterson, and our secondary will be picking Favrah off all day.

But Chester Taylor ran all over us

Childress isn’t letting Favre make stupid mistakes anymore.

What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

14 carries for 3 yards

And I’m sure he remembers, and he looks better than ever and that can be scary. And Chester got a BUck on us

Their playaction will be vicious

Funny how Favre used to be one of the worst dome QB’s ever and now it seems to be the opposite. I think he is too old for cold now!

Of course we "can"

But Seattle before Minnesota. That would give the team a huge boost within the division and heading into a very tough road game. We’ll certainly need smarter run blocking to move the ball vs Minnesota’s d-line. And that will be Hill vs his previous team which may mean something to him.

You gotta bring ass to get ass.

If We play

the way we did on offense this week against either Seattle or Minnesota you can forget about it. But let us all keep in mind that Singletary was exceptional in game planning and adjustments last season and trust me he will be in Raye’s face all week long. Secondy, a lot of us seem to forget the success Raye had at Kansas City with Trent Green, Priest Holmes and Tony Gonzalez. Green wasn’t the most talented QB but he worked well in that scheme, also i believe Vernon Davis can be utilized the same way Gonzalez was for the Chiefs. Davis can be a difference maker in this offense. If he can go for 6-60 game in and game out that will just open up our offense that much more on the outside and bring the 8 man box scheme to an end.

The key to our offense is run blitz pickup, but that is something that can be fixed during the week in practice. Baas and Snyder didn’t automatically lose their abilities and we do have Pashos and Wragge waiting in the wings, both of whom has had a lot of success in the NFL, Pashos more so.

WAT

Green wasn’t the most talented QB

Holy crap.

Well, we're waiting....

by drummer on Sep 15, 2009 1:41 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Also,

Just where and how did Raye coach Green?

From what I understand:

Green in KC: 2001-2006

Raye in KC: 1992-2000

Am I missing something here?

Well, we're waiting....

by drummer on Sep 15, 2009 1:56 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

My Bad On The Last Point

I did error on that one, i believed Raye to be KC’s OC much more recent then that.

So you think Trent Gren had a lot of talent? Of course he had more then Hill has has, but really?? I said he wasn’t “the most talented” …. I didn’t see he has no talent.

by nocal81 on Sep 15, 2009 2:44 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Green has thrown..

For almost 30,000 yards in his career. He has a career QB rating of 86.0. He played huge after a blown knee in 1999.

If you’re comparing him to Tom Brady or Peyton Manning, maybe he isn’t as talented as those Elite QB’s. But that’s a pretty damn good career playing in a then tough Division with KC.

Second, this:

But let us all keep in mind that Singletary was exceptional in game planning and adjustments last season

Way to effusive in praise here. We’ve beaten that horse into the ground here. You should pay more attention.

Yeah, maybe next time do a little research.

Well, we're waiting....

by drummer on Sep 15, 2009 2:55 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I Have

Done the research man. I made a mistake regardin Raye and owned up to it, how about you get over it and stop harping on it. Maybe that would do you a little good?? Just a suggestions as you seem to be a bitter little person.

Secondly, it is my view from watching the 49ers in the second half last season that he made good mid week adjustments and brought them into games in order to bring something else to the scheme. If you think for one second that Singletary doesn’t talk to his offensive coordinators then you are sadly mistaken.

Finally, negative nancies piss me off. So how about you stick that little research comment where the sun dont shine.

Well, if you're gonna put somethig out there..

At least qualify the without the obvious platitudes, and try at least to back your statements up with accuracy.

Why? Because of credibility. I applaud your efforts. You truly have a passion for the team, and we all share that. We all make mistakes, but the Green one was a pretty egregious one, and kinda blew your point up. It also blew up your point on Singletary. I get what you’re going after, but last season has been covered with a lot of detail and discussion here, and you’re kinda revisiting it with redundancy.

Look, I don’t write fanposts because I really don’t have the energy or creativity to do it. I did those a while back ago, and got hell for them too when I was wrong. I’m not trying to discourage you and debunk your opinions. I think your posts are getting better. All I’m trying to do is keep them honest, and you can take my opinion for what it’s worth.

You do bring something to the table, and that’s energy and passion. I apologize if I come off a bit harsh, but I can either ignore your posts, or help contribute to them. Obviously, I’m not ignoring them, so I do take them into consideration.

Well, we're waiting....

by drummer on Sep 15, 2009 6:45 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I Appreciate

constructive critism, i believe that to be one of the best ways for someone to better themselves in anything you do. So if that’s what your going to provide to my posts i will not attack you for that. But before your most recent post you have not provided that. It seemed you attempted to debunk every thing that i have said on this site since joining.

Well now that we are done with that BS. Let my respond to your Singletary opinon or lack thereof. I didn’t take my point of view from some hack writer on CNNSI or ESPN. I watch every single 49ers game and have done so for the last decade or so. Even when i am vactationing or on business. And what i will say is that Singletary did make good adjustments in practice to change the game plan for the following week in the later weeks last season. It is something i saw and it is opinion, you are entitled to agree or disagree with that if you see fit. But you cannot fully debunk that as false, the funny thing about opinions is that everyone has one. Yes Green threw for 30,000 yards in his career. But does that make him real talented? Of course it doesn’t!!!! How many yards has Garcia thrown for in his career? And you cannot say that he is the most talented QB. It wasn’t a dis on Green in anyway but it less talented QB’s can succeed in the NFL in the right scheme.

by nocal81 on Sep 15, 2009 8:30 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well...

As far as me “debunking” what your say every post:

For one thing: your use of stats with Hill vs. other QB’s is poor. You still try to justify those too. That’s one pet peeve of mine.

The Singletary issue has been beaten into the ground here. You have your opinion. I have mine. I’ll leave it at that.

Green has thrown over 4000 yards for 3 consecutive seasons. Garcia has thrown that only once. Based upon your mistake on Raye and Green, I don’t see how are credible in your assessment of Green. Green was a Martz pupil who also flourished with Schottenhiemer. Saunders was his OC for a few years too. If Green hadn’t gotten a serious knee injury that derailed his career for over a year, who knows what he could have done with the 1999 Rams.

That’s where you leave facts out of your arguments.

Well, we're waiting....

by drummer on Sep 15, 2009 8:47 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I Was Drawing the Green/Garcia

comparisons as a way to show you that “talent” isn’t everything. I didn’t and don’t see Green as the most talented QB. Regarding Hill’s stats well if you believe my statistical observations to be false that’s your thing. I tend to believe that YPA and QB ratings do matter in the NFL and you don’t. I tend to think that TD/INT ratio is also another nice varible. But hey we will never agree on that. I understand that Hill was pretty horrible most of the game on Sunday up until that deciding drive and he still had nearly a 90 QB rating. But what he did was win that game for us on that drive. And that cannot be configured in stats alone.

by nocal81 on Sep 15, 2009 8:59 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, here is an example..

Of me using your method of rating QBs:

Career passer rating:

Hill: 90.4

Green: 86.0

ZOMG!! HILL IS S00perz!!

Realty check:

Career starts:

Hill: 14

Green: 113

If you don’t understand that, then you really shouldn’t try using passer ratings.

Well, we're waiting....

by drummer on Sep 15, 2009 9:04 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

You Have

Attempted to make these points in previous thread, i said i am over with it. We have to agree to disagree. But for one last time starts are really not even a part of my equation. Nor should they be. I do understand that Green has done it for a much larger time, i understand that Garcia has too. First off Garcia has never been in an offence where he had to throw for 4,000 yards, Green has. Secondy, how many career starts do Jeff George, Ryan Leaf, Trent Dilfer and Rick Mirer have? Another point is that Hill’s QB rating is over 90 in his FIRST 14 career starts, that in of itself shows that he has the ability to get it done. Oh and #1 reason in support of Hill. HE IS 8-3 AS A STARTER FOR THE 49ERS. 8-3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by nocal81 on Sep 15, 2009 10:55 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well...

Green has gone 13-3 in one season as starter. I dunno.

Well, we're waiting....

I had a long post typed out describing just how idiotic your logic was – claiming that sample size is irrelevant and that what a guy does in 11 starts is more than enough to place more value on someone who has performed well over 11 seasons - but really, it’s just not worth the time.

My pessimism goes to the point of suspecting the sincerity of the pessimists.

by shlecko on Sep 15, 2009 11:30 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I Never

Said it was irrelevent, i just said you placing way too much stock in that. But really? If you wan’t to go on a rant to disprove my nation by all means go ahead. “it’s just not worth my time” Well that is a major copp out and you know that!!!!!!!!!!

by nocal81 on Sep 16, 2009 10:07 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I just like to think that I can learn from other people's mistakes.

Watching intelligent people like Howie, Brendan and Ronaldinho go on 30-post rants drilling the same basic information into completely oblivious debate opponents, clinging on to the desperate hope that said person will eventually catch on to simple logic has taught me that a fight is not worth fighting when the other person isn’t capable of seeing that they’ve lost.

So yeah. “Not worth my time.”
Nothing personal.

My pessimism goes to the point of suspecting the sincerity of the pessimists.

I would

Have to agree with you on that.

+1

Yup. Remember the last time we went to the playoffs? Well, I was in Hawaii on vacation. My girlfriend and sister went to the beach and I sat at the house solo…with a 12 pack of Sierra Nevada. That was a great game vs the NY football Giants.
And then the next year we lose our coach and Jeff Garcia. I’m still a little upset.
I think this is one reason why I like Hill. He’s not ideal in some ways. But he is still better than our #1 pick.
Garcia has never been an “ideal” QB. After all that’s why we got good old Alex.

Az. soup

Great Defense! In Warner face all day. Close out the game when the defense had to. I want to see the same defense against Seattle. May prove to be harder game.
Now, I hope that Raye may rethink his game plan. Opposing teams will continue to stack the Box if Raye keeps the same thing. If he’s going to continues to run, he needs to consider bringing in Sheets to run outside, something they didn’t or couldn’t do against Az..Or use Hill more often. Offense Line, nothing different. That needs to change. 4 sacks, enough said.

Speaking of Sheets...

Did you see Sproles last nite?

Cut Rossum and bring in Kory!

The future ain't what it used to be. Go Niners!

by riderless on Sep 15, 2009 12:19 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I Agree

Though let me say first i respect Rossum’s game and what he has done for us. He is an absolute professional and i have nothing bad to say about him. But we really do not have a need for him with Spurlock on the roster, i am not saying that Spurlock would be a major upgrade over Rossum but he is considerably younger and has major upside, something Rossum doesn’t have. This would also allow us to carry another player and yes Sheets should be on the active roster, he can help Spurlock in the return game and take some heat off of both Gore and Coffee. This would also allow Robinson to concentrate soley on being our special teams ace and backup fullback. I really think it is a no brainer and i have been saying cut Rossum for the entire preseason and that stance has not changed

by nocal81 on Sep 15, 2009 1:05 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

It helps when the Raider linebackers drop back 15 yards into coverage than fall down when Rivers tosses the dump off to Sproles.

by bignerd on Sep 15, 2009 8:25 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Oh god

I couldn’t believe the “prevent” defense those hapless Raiders played in the waning moments of last night’s game. I hate Oakland with a passion but i have to give them credit for the game they played. But to lose it playing that type of soft defense is absolutely absurd. One thing i know Singletary will never do that!!!! And thank god

by nocal81 on Sep 15, 2009 8:31 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Truth be told they were playing that same defense the entire 2nd half, if not the game. Steve Young would not shut up about it. He said he would keep throwing to Sproles until the Raiders adjusted and they never did. Prior to the Vincent Jackson touchdown Sproles caught a dump off pass to convert a 3rd and very long.

by bignerd on Sep 15, 2009 8:37 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

John Marshall, Seattle's former DC, is now with the Raiders.

No wonder their defense is predictably in the dumps.
