Crabtree really isn't that good
I don’t blame the front office for not wanting to negotiate a fair deal. We need to make sure everyone knows we don’t negotiate deals. It’s take-it-or-leave-it. No second offer. No nothing. If you don’t like it, we’ll turn the fans against you and force you to sign. That way we’ll be sure to sign our two first rounders next year for less than they’re worth.
Crabtree WTF?
The last receiver the 49ers drafted at #10 was...
JJ Stokes. The draft is just a guess. Maybe he’ll be really good. Maybe he’ll just be a body to stick out there. Rightly or wrongly, there’s a sort of system in place where you get paid according to draft order. Based on that, Crabtree’s offer is fair. If Crabtree manages to break out of his salary slot, the next time the 49ers have to try and get someone signed, it’ll be another ridiculously protracted negotiation, and they’ll have to pay way over market to get the deal done. Come on, it’s more money than Crabtree’s entire family has ever seen in their lives, either way. If he turns out to be as good as advertised, the next deal will be obscenely huge, and if not, he got millions of dollars to hang out and watch the games.
If anyone can knock this guy into shape, it's Singletary.
Man, I wish we could have had Sing whip TO into shape.
If Crabtree had any common sense...
he’d of signed a long time ago. We’ll see, but don’t be holding your breath.
Does anyone
think that York, the Front Office, Parker and Crabtree will get together (face-to-face) this week or next?
It’s just cool to see that ESPN is talking about this… maybe Crabtree will see it and wise up. I think he may be too stubborn though, and keep telling himself that nobody can tell him what to do, yadda, yadda, yadda.. so he thinks he’ll somehow prove them wrong by getting drafted next season. Either that, or Dallas did in fact tell him they would draft him and pay him what he wants next year. Either way, it’s bad Crabtree… and I have a hard time seeing him get drafted anywhere in the first round.
Teams
tell players stuff all the time throughout the process of a draft… If someone did “gaurantee” him something, it’s just a verbal agreement. His so-to-speak “ace in the hole” may not be there come draft time.
At this point, he really HAS to sign with the Niners. If Eugene Parker screws him outta the money that the Niners are offering…I will kinda feel sorry for the kid. Sometimes these agents get in here (behind the scenes) and everyone is sitting there bashing Crabtree when it’s not all him doing this. There’s always behind the scene stuff that takes place that the media doesn’t get a hold of. What is the media’s main objective…ratings right? Stories right? We only know what we’re getting spoon fed. And there’s the fact that he hasn’t signed, but like I said, there’s probably things that we (as the general public and 9er fans) dont know.
I know he’s not guaranteed to be picked. It’s just funny that he thinks that a team will guarantee that. Parker should be smart enough to know that this isn’t a good idea. I’ve also read that Parker does what his clients tell him to do. If they want to holdout for more money, then he’ll let them holdout and he’ll try to get the money. He kinda came out and said that this was all Crabtree’s idea, but I think that might be to try and save his ass for future clients coming into the NFL. If he can’t get Crabtree signed, then other players aren’t going to think it’s a good idea to have Parker represent them, because he has shown that he can’t actually get what the player wants.
Who else does
Eugene Parker represent… just out of curiousity? I really don’t know too much about agents other than Drew Rosenhaus for obvious reasons
Nevermind
I got it from wikepedia…
Some of Parker’s clients include:
Hines Ward (Super Bowl XL MVP and four-time Pro Bowler)
Richard Seymour (4 time All Pro)
Walter Jones (5 time All Pro)
Emmitt Smith (NFL all time leading rusher)
Larry Fitzgerald (All Pro)
Derrick Brooks (9 time All Pro)
Rod Woodson (11 time All Pro)
Aeneas Williams (8 time All Pro)
Rex Grossman (Super Bowl QB)
Devin Hester (NFL record holder, All Pro)
Cedric Benson (Super Bowl running back)
Curtis Martin (5 time All Pro)
Laveranues Coles (All Pro receiver)
Jason Peters (All Pro left tackle)
James Hardy (Bills 2008 2nd Round Draft Pick)
Greg Jennings (Green Bay Packers, 2006 2nd Round Draft Pick)
Felix Jones (Cowboys 2008 1st Round Draft Pick]
Tashard Choice (Cowboys 2008 3rd Round Draft Pick)
Steven Jackson (St. Louis Rams star running back)
Tyson Jackson (Kansas City Chiefs 2009 1st Round Draft Pick)
Michael Crabtree (San Francisco 49ers 2009 1st Round Draft Pick)
Yeah, I was just about to post that. He’s also represented Emmitt Smith, and surprise, surprise, Deion Sanders…. so it’s a pretty decent list. I just think that Deion Sanders has some sort of vendetta against the Niners, and he’ll do anything he can to screw them and help Dallas.
I think there is some messing around being done with the Cowboys
Who else would wait for the biggest WR prospect in Texas? Crabtree will still be considered a better “prospect” than any WR coming out of the draft, and Texas fans love him. He may have left the bay to be in Texas for the Texas vs Tech game, and if anyone is gonna pay him that kind of money it will be an oil mogul by the name of Scary Jones. York is gonna have to pay more money to get Crabtree and that’s the BOTTOM LINE!!

Not necessarily true
Next year there could be three receivers going before him. And depending on need, that might push him into the second round. Plus, if the Cowboys are blowing smoke up his butt, he may want to look at Sunday’s game. The Cowboys didn’t look like they needed a receiver.

True, but Scary Jones will spend on a player that will gt tickets sold
Crabtree is a god in Texas, I’m down here and that punks jersey is everywhere, and I’m 6 hours from Dallas.

I agree
There are so many things the media doesn’t tell. The media nowadays are more interested ratings then they are reporting facts.
On possibility that was mentioned was that "If Crabtree knows he will get a package he wants" is scarey
I am wondering if another team, one of the two teams that were supposed to have contacted the 49ers according to Prime Time, has contacted Crabtree in a round about way, with the promise to give him the deal he wants next year. Difficult to prove tampering on this.
"Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, either way, YOU'RE RIGHT !"
So, if he knows he can get the deal next year, why settle for less from the 49ers?
"Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, either way, YOU'RE RIGHT !"
As they said in the video
So much can change one year to the next. $8 million+ is a lot of money to gamble based on some under-the-table promise.
Never forget: I am a complete idiot
I agree, but if someone tells you that if you wait they will draft you and pay you mucho bucks.. it is hard to not believe that.
Especially if it comes from someone you trust. Of course is another team drafts him before this mystery team does, then he is screwed
"Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, either way, YOU'RE RIGHT !"
Just the opposite
It’s hard to believe that any team would say this. Why? Because we’re not dealing in state secrets here. It will come out. Then the team who thought that they’d get Crabtree will be out a pick next year (probably a #1). That would certainly make the Niners happy.
Second, it’s a promise for suckers. Right now there are undrafted free agents stepping up. There’s a good chance that a team who would need a receiver now won’t need one next year. Or a better one may emerge in the draft for a lot cheaper with no headaches. Ask yourself. If Brandon Jones and Josh Morgan both step up and play great this year, would the Niners draft a Crabtree next year?
Third, Deion apparently weaseled his way out of the “two teams” story. On a local radio show he reportedly said that on draft day two teams wanted to trade with the Niners for the tenth pick in order to get Crabtree. That’s a long way from two teams wanting to pay Crabtree forty million. So aside from Deion’s credibility taking another hit (heh heh), who’s to say that those two teams 1.) didn’t solve their wide receiver needs already, 2.) have been scared away by this crazy negotiation, 3.) have a first round pick next year anywhere near the top ten or twenty? And let’s say he falls to the mystery team late in the first round or in the second round. What’s the easiest way to announce “we tampered” than to pay him big bucks?
Fourth, as much as I despise Jerry Jones, he is a businessman and there’s no way he’d get stuck in a tampering charge for someone who is not such a sure thing. Why pay forty million for a receiver when it appears his team is racking up lots of passing yards without him?
No, Deion lied as a favor for his old agent. There is no mystery team.

Verbal contract?
Even IF, things change day-today in the NFL…
Look at how many times people have thought they were gonna go top 10 and didn’t i.e. Brady Quinn
I agree.. but he may be flying with blinders on...
"Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, either way, YOU'RE RIGHT !"
Especially
with receivers like Dez Bryant outta Oklahoma State coming in to the draft? There will be others emerging as well.
I think Todd McShay makes alot of valid points
Big Gamble.. the thing is.. What does he believe?
Forget logic… If he believes that he will get what he wants next year… then that’s what counts.
"Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, either way, YOU'RE RIGHT !"
e.g. Aaron Rodgers…. he was a possible #1 pick to the Niners then dropped HELLA far. I don’t remember him asking the Packers for #1 money. He proved himself on the field, and he’ll get his pay day, turn to Alex Smith and say, “Wow, funny how things work out. You’re taking the paycut, and I’m getting the pay raise.”
Aaron Rogers got his payday last season!!

They didn’t talk about us trading him after March 1st at all. I think that will be the most likely thing to happen if we are not able to sign him by week 10. We should at least shop him around so the pick wouldn’t be a complete waste.
We will have to
He won’t be able to work out at all in a combine or anything like that as long as we have the rights. Its really a catch 22. If he decides to sit he has that to consider
Fooch can you help me out?
Will the 9ers be able to trade Crabtree no matter what in March of 2010?? At least his rights?
AKA.............Optimist Prime
Banned in 13 comments from the Gulls and I am proud!!
trade
It’s my understanding that from March 1 until the beginning of the draft (either day of, or night before) they can deal his rights. Although I’d imagine whomever they dealt with would want a window to work a deal with Crabtree or something like that.
by David Fucillo on Sep 16, 2009 4:56 PM PDT up reply actions
And who will want to pay him forty million in March 1010?
Or twenty million, for that matter?
by Bob In Beaverton on Sep 16, 2009 5:39 PM PDT up reply actions
So what does everybody think. He signs or sits?
I think he signs for all the reasons smith and mcshay pointed out. I like what mcshay said at the end If he doesn’t sign with niners he is making a big mistake he needs to be catching and making plays for the San Francisco 49ers.
I agree
However, this was clear two weeks ago. This self-destructive negotiating position is irrational. That’s why it’s so frustrating for fans. Is he a diva? Is he being tampered with? Is he greedy? Is he mentally deficient? Is he mentally ill?
All I know is that my family and friends would not let me walk away from 16 million guaranteed. He could be losing ten million by this.
Rational people want to know.

Maybe
he wants to go to an endorsement flooded market like Manning did. He would more than make up for it in endorsments. Who knows maybe thats the angle Eugene Parker is working. Even if he looses money in the draft, by going to a NY based team, or Dallas, or one of those types of teams he could easily make the money back by doing Pepsi, Subway, and McDonalds commercials. Not to mention the big ones like Nike, Under Armor, etc…
The problem with that is
what kind of endorsement is he going to get now? “Head On”? Maybe Jed York can do a “Head On” commercial.
And based on the potential risk/reward I don’t think anyone going to use him to push a product when every survey I’ve seen gives him a 95% disapproval rating. You might as well use Hitler or Idi Amin to sell your product.
by Bob In Beaverton on Sep 16, 2009 5:25 PM PDT up reply actions
Yeah… I was just trying to figure it out. I think he has already done some endorsing though. He is on th efront cover of the NCAA Football game already. Maybe you’re right though
He did already get some endorsements.
I saw that he got six figures. But I haven’t seen any commericals of him drinking Gatorade. “When I run to my job at 7-11 I sure work up a sweat.” His endorsement is worthless, which means that anyone who was thinking that they’d hire him won’t.
If you’re thinking about living the big life a hundred thousand goes really fast, especially when there’s 16 million guaranteed on the table.

I just mentioned on the official Crabtree thread...
and I think it bears repeating, I don’t believe Eugene Parker would continue to be his agent if M-Crab was serious about sitting out. As it stands he is practically working for free. I just don’t see Parker sticking by Crabtree for a year, just to end up losing money on a contract next year. It equals more work for less money for Parker, and the outcome might scare future clients away. This is why I think he will sign. Unless there is some back room dealing going on…
Dez Bryant or Michael Crabtree?
Who would you pick out of these two in next years draft in this hypothetical situation? Curious…
Maybe there’s even a better wideout than this in the draft.
Your picks and why?
I've heard that there are at least three receivers,
Bryant and two others, who would be picked before Crabtree. (But don’t ask me for any names.) But if you’ve got a high pick you’ve probably got a number of needs. Why risk going with a wacko receiver (and receivers’ success are really hard to predict) when you can take the linebacker or tackle you need? I hope it doesn’t get to this, but if he goes into next year’s draft no one will ignore this crazy negotiation. This is an epic fail.

You are banned from Field Gulls.
Agree to disagree
I think he was an animal in college and even though a majority of the time he was playing against backups in preseason, he did see time with the first team and he gets after the ball
hopefully Crabtree sees this video
Even if/when he signs, the fans (definitely me) will give him a lot of heat if he doesn’t succeed right away. Hopefully that isn’t the case and when he signs (I think he will) he will be a boss.
Go 49ers
He won't succeed right away.
If he signs, once he signs, it’ll be at least 2 months before he gets clear enough on the playbook to be put in the game more than every once in a great while. Hell, Jerry Rice had a training camp, and he really didn’t look all that great until about the last 4 games of his rookie year. No one will be sure whether or not Crabtree’s worth this much trouble until probably the end of next year. If he’s a stiff, shout insults and throw garbage then.
Dallas
even if dallas picks him next year they are not going to pay him what he wants because dallas’s pick wont likely be in the top 10 (unless they trade up). So if Dallas picks crabtree with their pick (say 22nd) or even in the 2nd round they are gonna look like big time idiots if they pay him top ten money. Sorta in the same way that the 49ers would look if they did the same now….except even stupider.
on a more positive note – Jake Delhomme is revealing a fragile psyche and coming off tommy john surgery….go falcons this week?
