Which current player does not know why team called 49ers?
We have a new Saturday morning magazine show on TV here now which appears to be aiming to bring new fans into the game, so they go through a bunch of basics.
In the second edition, which aired yesterday on Channel 5 in the UK, there was an interview with a current captain of the 49ers offense. He was asked why the 49ers are called the 49ers, and he could offer no answer.
But hey, if Vernon Davis catches the winning pass tonight or plays his part in any way in a crucial divisional victory, who cares if he may possibly win the dumbest Niner award ...
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

Okay
This post fascinated me for some reason….so, while watching Sunday Night Football with a bunch of buddies, I posed the question to see if they all knew…
And, believe it or not, 2 of the guys had no idea. But, then again, one graduated from Ball State.
Never use a big word where a diminutive alternative would suffice.
Was it Nate Davis?

If I remember my Ca. history
The Niners are called that because Ca. became a state in 1849.
P.S.
The City limit is also 49 miles Square.
So you can pick one and be right.

Yea, I forgot to mention that.
Believe it started at Sutter Hill. Near Placerville off Hiway 80. Nice stop before heading to Lake Tahoe.

Because Joe Montana threw for 49 TDs in one game?
A record the NFL conveniently leaves out of it’s official stats. Got it now, Vernon?
it's Sutter's Mill
and it’s in Coloma (yes, near placerville)

It was changed to Sutter’s Hill when Shaun Hill went there on vacation during the offseason.

it's the reason this image makes any sense

I believe
49 was the year of the Gold Rush. It just has to be the perfect name for a football team though.
And in the year 49, Jesus led the chosen people to the Gold Rush in California, where they prospered forever.
That’s my favorite Bible story.
