Around SBN: Stan Van Gundy Fired As Head Coach Of The Magic

The "You were right, I was wrong" thread

I spent a long time talking trash here and the Niners proved my words wrong.  I was expecting a difficult, physical, close matchup, not the blowout the Niners brought.  Thanks for putting up with hosting the influx of FG visitors this week and our incessant trash talking.  You guys were right, we were wrong and I'm back here to take my lumps.  To start things off, here are a couple of ways I was wrong:

  • Frank Gore absolutely tore up a Seahawks run D I though was strong.
  • The Niners' defense brought the pressure, played physical and stuffed the run.  The Niners' secondary shut down what I thought to be a pretty potent WR corps.  The Seahawks D gave up huge runs up the gut, a ton of short passes and way too many conversions on 3rd and long.
  • Shaun Hill was a better QB than I thought he was.  He played his game a lot better than Hasselbeck did.
  • Vernon Davis played a better game than John Carlson.

So once again, congratulations.  I hope the next time the Niners and Seahawks meet, the game is more competitive.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

Appreciate you taking the loss like a man. Until those closing moments, the 49ers offense was definitely concerning enough (Gore aside) that I was concerned the Seahawks could stay in it. But the 49ers defense stepped up big time in this game.

I did think...

it was a clean play. It’s football. No (intentional) harm, no foul. If he didn’t want to risk the injury, he should have slid.

I did think, however, on an earlier scramble when he did go feet first and was hit a little that a flag could have been called. I don’t know that it would have been a great call, but I’m curious if you guys saw that and thought the same thing or if I was just wearing “Hawk blinders.”

No helmet hit...

Not sure about the earlier scramble. But on the other one, if he had lead with his helmet, I would be first to admit how bad a hit it was and would definitely deserve a flag. But Willis lead with his shoulder and I think just trying to keep him out of the endzone.

by agchee on Sep 20, 2009 6:09 PM PDT up reply actions

I think I know the play you're talking about

I think it was a good no-call, the guys kind of fell on him as he was going into his slide, but at the time I was also worried a flag might come out, so it could have gone either way. But hey, I was in the 3 rows from the back of the upper deck, so it’s not like I had the best view

I Agree

I did cringe when Hasselbeck went down. Even as rivals i don’t want to see an opposing starting QB down and out like that, especially one with class. One saving grace is that it wasn’t a dirty hit by Willis that was all in the physicality and emotion of the game.

by TexanNiner on Sep 20, 2009 5:57 PM PDT reply actions

He beat me to it...

I was going to make basically the same post.

One thing I hope you all remember, and I was taught this a long time ago. I apologize for bringing up things from my world/life, as one of your posters has apparently felt I was bragging by doing so, but that is not the case.

I was fortunate enough to play HS hoops for a great program in WA state, a program that had tradition and class. We modeled our program after two professional teams, the LA Lakers and the SF FortyNiners. We always saw the Niners in the NFL as being on a level that we aspired to back then. (I’m class of ’93 in HS, so I was around for your absolute prime years.)

Anyway, one of the first things our coach taught us as we were winning with frequency was to “be gracious in victory, and humble in defeat.”

I personally hate humble, but today, I’ll have a slice of that pie.

You won your home game vs. the Hawks.

If you are going to win the West, that’s a requirement. If you are going to compete, it’s still the requirement.

You are SUPPOSED to win against the Hawks at home. But you didn’t just win, you kicked our asses.

Yes, you won against the Hawks minus Hasselbeck, Mebane, Tatupu, Hill, Sean Locklear, not to mention Tru and Big Walt. Incredibly sweet win for you. However, and this is the nature of the NFL, and why we are all fans despite those losses—- we still have some solace knowing we get a rematch at home with the hope of having most if not all of those guys for the rematch.

I’m not making excuses through injury. The Niners won. Frank Gore broke two HUGE runs, and the general flow and momentum of the game definitely favored your team. And Shaun Hill played better than I had anticipated. I’m not yet a believer, but I’ll put it this way— he’s on the waiver wire in one of my fantasy leagues, and I’ve officially put the “watch list” flag on him.

HOWEVER, if this game makes you feel confident that the division is yours, well, enjoy that feeling while it lasts. I live in Denver right now, and at 2-0 with wins against the Bengals (on the luckiest play of the decade) and the lowly Browns, there are Bronco fans that seems to think they are “for real” this year.

It’s a long year.

Enjoy the win. But be ready, you still have to come to our house, and you’ve got a hungry and rejuvenated Arizona team licking its chops for a rematch.

It’s gonna be a long year, may the best team win. Right now, you have a MONSTROUS head start. I’m hopeful we can catch up. I’m sure the 894 living breathing “hardcore” Cardinal fans are hoping the same….

Nice work Niners, enjoy the win!!!!

However, it isn’t an excuse. Niners kicked ass.

But, we do have a couple chips left for the big pot rematch. 1) it’s at Seattle. 2) we can hope to be healthier.

Again, NOT an excuse. HOPE for next time is not the same as an excuse for what happened. What happened was the better team today won the game. I’m hoping over the next few weeks we become a stronger better team…

And yes, you definitely earned both wins. Two Divisional wins is big, particularly since one was away.

Hasselbeck, Tatupu, Locklear all were injured during the game

the Seahawks were not with out these players until after the game began. Tatupu was knocked out in the first quarter, Hasselbeck right before the end of the half, and Locklear was hurt somewhere along the first half I believe. I know all three played, and were injured during play. The Niners prepared to face these guys, and they ended up hurt, it’s football.

You don't get it do you?

John Morgan already gave you a 1 week ban (which I asked him about) because you spouted your stupid Curry bullcrap on an article that had nothing to do with him.

You decided to just do what already pissed people off over and over again and that was the final straw. I even flagged you once.

Instead of realizing he’s a rookie and will make some mistakes, you ignored the fact that he forced a fumble that could’ve won us the game. Why? To piss people off and to harp your own baseless agenda.

Dude it’s nothing personal but you broke everyone’s threshold and that ban was coming.

I got the banhammer from FG twice, and deservedly so for being a panicky hothead, but instead of calling a comment mod a nazi I decided to do something productive and do some “Ask SSreporters” stuff on other blogs for Seahawks opposition.

This is the first time you’ve logged on since you were banned and now you’re bitching about Curry on Niners Nation.

No, it wasn't just did that.

I probably did it more often than people would liked me to, but I still think I have every right to scrutinize the 4th overall pick who was allegedly the best ‘pro-ready’ prospect, especially at a position which is basically like the RB of defense.

So why pin-point his?

HE IS A ROOKIE!!!! Are you expecting a 10 year pro in there? I hope you realize Julian Peterson is on the downside of his career and we’re building for the future. I SERIOUSLY hope you weren’t thinking that we’d get Lawrence Taylor-like CAREER stats in 3 games.

Curry has made 15 solo tackles in 3 games and got us a sack that would’ve won us the game, which once again you decided to ignore. He does deserve a gameball because he made big plays.

It is blatant trolling because even when we were smashing the Rams you had to bash Curry. Even when you’re joking about it it’s annoying because more often than not I actually think you believe the crap you write.

I don’t see the first TD as Curry’s fault at all.

You can’t stand him. Just admit it. You point out the mistakes he makes and intentionally choose to avoid the game-changing play. If Deon Grant and Travis Fisher don’t play like Keystone Cops and we win that game what would’ve been your reaction? Never mind stupid question I know what will happen.

Saying he was disappointing and was responsible for 2 TDs is not even constructive feedback because it’s a microcosm of his performance.

"HE IS A ROOKIE!!!! Are you expecting a 10 year pro in there? I hope you realize Julian Peterson is on the downside of his career and we’re building for the future."

You don’t build around your future around a coverage LB. You are supposed to draft a franchise cornerstone with a top 5 pick, and instead we get a Wake Forest product who could possibly not even be the best starting LB on the team.

“I don’t see the first TD as Curry’s fault at all.”

Gee, maybe Cory Redding was in charge of Greg Olsen. Then we have far more worrying problems.

I have nothing against Curry personally. I am against drafting a linebacker in the top 5 when we already had a sub-elite one for less money. I was so glad that we didn’t have much of a chance of draftin gCurry because we already had 3 great LBs, but I should have known better that the worst was coming as soon as we traded Julian Peterson for an underachieving DT from the Lions.

Peterson is over 30 isn't he?

Downside of his career. Trade him while he still has value and get a decent DT.

You would’ve berated the Lawrence Taylor pick from the Giants in 1983 if you rooted for them.

You don’t build your future on one draft pick either. We got a future starting guard in Unger who has been solid for 3 games.

We have a linebacker that has made big plays (and of course made his mistakes) and is part of a young and talented corp.

Deon Butler could develop into our next Bobby Engram, assuming Branch gets the boot next season (or any other receiver on the roster that would move Butler up).

THAT is how you build a franchise. Through the whole draft, not one pick that you nitpicked and refuse to acknowledge anything he does right.

Out of curiosity did you get any text explaining why you were banned?

Peterson may have been 30, but he was an absolute BEAST.

As a 49er fan I’m glad to see him go.

I really don’t know if Curry will ever be as good as Peterson.

Guard of the future?
Are you kidding me?

As a fan he has every right to nitpick his team’s draft selections (especially the most important one of them all)
Just because you disagree doesn’t mean you can just make him go away.

by SportsChicken on Oct 1, 2009 10:38 PM PDT up reply actions

Let's address this point by point.
Downside of his career. Trade him while he still has value and get a decent DT.

Just because he’s 30 doesn’t mean he’s already fallen off the cliff. Especially someone like Peterson who is a true freak of nature and one of the most ridiculously athletic and naturally gifted players in the entire NFL.
He had 5 sacks last season despite not being asked to blitz much in the latter half of the season. And I’m both sure we can agree that John Marshall was a horrible coordinator.

And if Peterson, arguably the best ‘longterm’ player on the team over 30 is on the downside of his career, shouldn’t we have traded Hasselbeck, Walt, and Kerney ages ago? Good lord knows Kerney looks like he’s totally finished/.

You would’ve berated the Lawrence Taylor pick from the Giants in 1983 if you rooted for them.

No, because Taylor was a monster in the NCAA level and was a top-tier pass-rusher. Aaron Curry i snot Lawrence Taylor. Aaron Curry might not even be Derrick Brooks, for heaven’s sake.

You don’t build your future on one draft pick either. We got a future starting guard in Unger who has been solid for 3 games.

Unger is a fine player, but we already knew Walt, Wahle, and Locklear were injury-risks before the draft and now we’re reaping the reward of having Brandon Frye. What if Dwight Freeney were healthy for this Sunday?

We have a linebacker that has made big plays (and of course made his mistakes) and is part of a young and talented corp.

So? Peterson did the same for less money, and we could still have had a top 5 draft pick to use elswhere.

Deon Butler could develop into our next Bobby Engram, assuming Branch gets the boot next season (or any other receiver on the roster that would move Butler up).

Butler has looked great, but if your scenario is true that basically admits Branch was an absolute bust

Continued...
THAT is how you build a franchise. Through the whole draft, not one pick that you nitpicked and refuse to acknowledge anything he does right.

That’s a bit unfair. I was ecstatic when Ruskell managed to get the Broncos first round pick for peanuts, although it looks more and more we’ll be drafting higher than them anyway if the trend continues./ However, I am not going to unconditionally praise him just because he happens to be our GM. Remember, this is the guy that decided Hutch wasn’t worth franchise tagging, traded a 1st round pick for a guy who’s never had a 1000 yard season, signed Brian Russell. and now signed Colin Cole.

Out of curiosity did you get any text explaining why you were banned?

And in summary...

I think OLB was simply not a need at all, drafting one in the top 5 was lunacy. If we’re lulcky, he becomes as good as Peterson and it’s a wash. We got no better, but we didn’t get much worse besides salary cap ramifications/ If he doesn’t become as good as Peterson, well, just another underperforming Ruskell first round draft pick.

I have, several times, especially around draft day.

BrianL temporarily banned me then too.

If there is one player in the draft that should be under heavy scrutiny and criticism it’s Curry. The guy was supposed to come in and stabilize the LB corps of whatever team he was drafted to. He was supposed to come in and look like a Pro Bowler from day one. He was supposedly the safest, most pro ready prospect in the draft. For him to perform not just below a Pro Bowl level but poorly is inexcusable. Remember, even the Lions were considering drafting him because of these qualities, as much of an idiotic move that would be.

I was more concerned with the fact that everyone rated Curry so highly because of his combine.

He wasn’t considered a first day pick until his senior season. His stats weren’t exactly eye-popping. We got rid of Peterson with the pretense that we didn’t need 3 highly paid linebackers, only to draft a possibly inferior player for even more money. We didn’t improve by drafting Curry and likely got worse.

Nothing wrong with trying to prevent the communty from degrading into the ESPN boards.

But I still feel my points are absolutely valid and I’m not going to support the front office about everything just because I root for the team. An outside linebacker was not going to change our run defense into the NFL’s elite, and nor was making a career-backup DT from a crappy defense into a starter.

And any win gets an extra bolster because your players are hurt? Not gonna say it again but a lot of seahawks fans are acting this way hence some of the names I have spat out. This type of fanmanship happens a lot I’ve made excuses too, blaming the FO can’t be the reason for losing. My Guess? He didn't list those players...

on his sig to come post on this site. That’s for the Hawks site, where we post things like that because… well… because it fits with Seattle. Hell, one of our sports radio stations has adopted “Bittersweet Symphony” as the Seahawks song, and it really seems to fit.

It isn’t an excuse, it’s a “Holy shit, why is this happening to us again?!?!?”

I don’t think any of us came in here and said, “The reason we lost is because of the injuries.” I know I didn’t. I do have the sentiments that it sucks and I believe the outcome would have likely been quite different had the injuries not played a factor. But they did.

And the Niners thumped us.

And that’s the only outcome that matters.

And we’re hopeful we get healthy and kick Niner ass in the comforts of Qwest to take back the NFC West crown.

And you can say whatever you want right now and call it righteous (it isn’t), but it wont impact that hope we have, nor the belief that when healthy we’re the better team.

Nor will it impact the fact that the actual words of the guy you are dogging above had more to do with Aaron Curry playing poorly, and NOTHING to do with your response/attack, which is both unwarranted and unnecessary.

Again, you won.

We acknowledge in this thread and the other, that on 9/20/2009 the San Francisco 49ers were a superior team to the Seattle Seahawks.

Wins are not a goddamn QB stat.

QBs are no more responsible for a win than the receiver who catches the pass, the lineman who blocks, the DE who sacked the opposing QB preventing a 3rd down completion, the DB who batted away a TD pass, etc.

That Vince Young sure must be a great QB huh, him and his .620 winning percentage?

You didn't answer my question spaz

How is it that Mannings 119th win was celebrated then? Why is there a record kept for QB wins?

Just because it's stupid doesn't mean it's legitimate.

For example, wins continue to be used as a criteria for deciding Cy Young awards in baseball, even though a lot of whether or not he gets the win is outside the pitcher’s control.

by redwolf75 on Sep 30, 2009 12:59 AM PDT up reply actions

really?

I thought Complete Games were more important?

Zach Greinke should win the AL Cy Young this year, even though he has a lot of losses.

What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

by SportsChicken on Oct 1, 2009 8:49 AM PDT up reply actions

I don't think....

… wins directly correlate to a Cy Young, but it sure does seem like a player needs a minimum amount of them to even be considered.

by sfgfan on Oct 1, 2009 10:28 AM PDT up reply actions

If they are really good and can finish games...

They should be able to pick up at least 15 wins.

I don’t know how many CGs Greinke threw, but I’m pretty sure he won most of those.

Of course not.

But just because Smith is horrible doesn’t necessarily mean Hill is good.

Regardless of what YOU think and ANYONE can argue, QB’s wins and losses are RECORDED, so whether you like it or not, Hill has a 9-3 record as as starter, I’m sorry Manning broke the record and not Hasselbeck. It’s okay if your teams QB isn’t mentioned!!

I respect your position, and understand where you’re coming from when you say that wins are not a QB stat. But everytime you bring that up, it’s as if you’re ignoring the fact that the 49ers are ACTUALLY winning games… and again… with Hill under center.

And by the way, I’m not sure what you were reading there, but I didn’t say that wins are a QB stat, so I’m not sure why you brought that up

Whether it's a misleading stat or not, they take blame for losses when they don't perform.

It’s the offense or the defense or the QB. And since the NFL decides to keep a stat for their players you should acknowledge it, who cares if you don’t agree with it, it won’t be taken out!

way to take a defeat in stride. I watched the game with several Hawk fans. I felt bad for them once Hasselbeck got hurt. I definately shared some empathy for them.
As we were jumping around they were blank faced and pale looking. It feels good to pick up the win agianst a division rival. However, it feels weird that I do not hate the Hawks or Cards. I think I really only wish harm on Green Bay and Dallas.
Get well soon Hawks.

Good...

I really didn’t want to keep thinking you and Frog were assholes.

The problem with the interweb is that it’s impossible to tell just how serious someone is being in their statements. All I ask for in an opposing fan is a dash of reality. Of course we’re all going to be biases for our own teams it just annoys me when someone seems blindly oblivious to the truth.

Glad you weren’t after the win.

My Observations on both sides:

The Seahawks had absolutely awful luck last year with injuries and it cost them an otherwise decent season. 1 year is bad luck, however, 2 years is poor planning. It’s just like the niners trying to replace Jonas Jennings with Marvel Smith. I think the Seahawks should have brought in some better depth for their more injury-prone positions. I like Seneca Wallace a lot (I usually get him in Madden for a back up/running QB role) but he just doesn’t have the QB tools, in my mind, at least yet, to take the hawks where y’all wanna go.

Justin Forsett Looks real good. Didn’t know anything about him before the game, but I’m impressed.

Jordan Babineaux is really, really bad in run support. Go back and rewatch the two long Gore runs and watch Babineaux get blown by from a yard away on both of them.

Your O-line did a pretty good job of containing our rush though I think a lot of it was due to having to play honest in respect to Wallace’s running skills.

Gore is a badass, but not consistently so enough for my tastes.

Raye gets an unfairly bad rap.

Clements is making me eat my words about him only being above average. He’s really coming through so far this season.

Goldson – bought time, but really I think it was only a matter of time.

Right now I’d actually take Davis over Carlson though I think Carlson has a chance to be something special. Davis is just a better worker and blocker enough to make up for his deficiencies in receiving.

And last but not least – Holy Crap! has anyone else noticed that Mark Roman is actually playing really well? I was more right than I was expecting to be when I said he’d do a lot better when not asked to be a full-time starter.

by foosball4949 on Sep 21, 2009 11:59 AM PDT reply actions

"Mark Roman is actually playing really well"

You’re right. Like most of our DBs, he’s standing out by not standing out. They aren’t making mistakes. He’s doing a solid job in the nickel coming in for Lewis.

You gotta bring ass to get ass.

by SpurredOn on Sep 21, 2009 2:11 PM PDT reply actions

I think Roman had 5+ tackles in a part-time role.

He’s a solid player who has great technique and is never out of position. He plays very smart, but he’s just not a risk-taker.

by MontanaPass on Sep 21, 2009 8:08 PM PDT up reply actions

What's most impressive

from what I read, is that those 5 tackles came on 6 “DB plays”

26-Mark Roman: Played in six-DB situations, and did a very nice job with some sure-tackling. Roman had five tackles. He came up to make a nice tackle on Burleson to keep him inbounds late in the fourth.

Unless Maiocco didn’t mention some special teams play, getting the tackle on 5 of your 6 plays is good.

by Sebaz49 on Sep 22, 2009 1:23 PM PDT up reply actions

And now I reread that

and realize he meant 6 DBs on the field instead of 6 plays as a DB…. and feel like an idiot.

by Sebaz49 on Sep 22, 2009 1:25 PM PDT up reply actions

Classy in defeat = A++.

Thanks for stopping by and making things interesting. When next our teams meet, it may well be a more significant game with final playoff implications. I’m hoping so, anyway. And the Seahawks should have most of their injured players back to make it more competitive. Good luck with your other games and feel free to stop by and shoot the bull.
