Vikings 27 - 49ers 24: I hate Brett Favre

Sad-baby_medium

I hate the refs, I hate the announcers and I hate Brett Favre.  More thorough analysis to come when I no longer want to break something.  Let's try and keep the language relatively clean but site decorum is not going to be enforced in this thread.  Brett Favre can burn in hell.

Statistically speaking the Vikes dominated, and shouldn’t have been as close as it was. The better team won today.

However, you guys do look pretty good, and I’m predicitng you’ll win your division. I also hope we can beat your ass in the playoffs too. Another nail biter.

Well all the credit in the world to Minnesota but when you lose your rb on the first play and have a fg given to the Vikings (2 very bad 15 yard penalties on the same drive) to put them in fg range, thats a tough one.

HARDLY!

All the calls went Minnesota’s way. As it should be at home. But some of those calls were HORRIBLE. The Roughing the passer one was terrible !! The TAUNTING one was ATROCIOUS !!

Another year, another chance to hope for the team !!

roughing the QB was the worst I've seen

and there was an awful lot of holding that could have been called

by Salty on Sep 27, 2009 6:15 PM PDT up reply actions

Lot of complaints on that one

I’ve seen it called that way for years. I don’t like the rule but it wasn’t a phantom call.

It wasn’t as though it prolonged a 49er drive. The 49ers completed a 20 yard pass and got half the distance to the goal line on that penalty.

by bignerd on Sep 27, 2009 8:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Our offense doesn't have the killer instinct

in the 4th Q. They’ve got to put the game away safely and they don’t. Good teams will be able to pull out the win.

by smileyman on Sep 27, 2009 1:26 PM PDT reply actions

Our offense didnt have Frank Gore in the 4th quarter, I wouldn’t go getting all worked up about the offenses’ inability to put the game away just yet.

Thing A

by sam23 on Sep 27, 2009 1:32 PM PDT up reply actions

I would, I blame the game entirely on the offense. Not so much the players as much as Raye. He is fucking garbage. I have been complaining about him every game so far and now I really hate him for this one. The ball should have never been back in Minn hands. He uses the same formation, same fucking play over and over and over every week. There is no creativity, he isn’t fooling anyone. There is two 350 pound walls in the middle, you’re going to run right at them every playReally!! This game was ours to lose, and go figure, they did it. Just to not put all the focus on one thing, that kickoff return was retarded, the refs sucked, and considering they had to have a touchdown at the end, there is no excuse the defense should have given up a 50+ yard touchdown pass on the last play or two of the damn game. Words can not describe how pissed I am right now.

I’m blaming the defense. 90 seconds, no timeouts and 80 yards … that was huge advantage 49ers and lost it.

by bignerd on Sep 27, 2009 1:45 PM PDT up reply actions

It typically works in that situation. They should have rushed 4 instead of 3, that was my gripe.

by bignerd on Sep 27, 2009 1:48 PM PDT up reply actions

They had 40 yards to go and 1 play left. The defense worked until the last play. A 40 yard TD in blanket coverage is sorta a miracle if you look at the odds.

Their issue was Farve figured out he would have 10 seconds on the play because the pass rush of 3 guys was not getting there.

by bignerd on Sep 27, 2009 1:59 PM PDT up reply actions

That wasn't Romans fualt. He was the only one in position

On a play like that, there should have been 3 other defenders there with him.

Roman was fine. That last play he had good coverage. The catch was a miracle, nothing he could do about it (especially not with that much for Brett to throw.)

Raye was also fine. Wish he had thrown more, especially our last drive (three runs with our backup, rookie, banged up rb?? Seriously?)

We had MOMENTUM! They were on their Heels ! If we would have just thrown a TE short out we would have won that game. But NOOOOOO. Run it into the teeth of their defense that has been stuffing the run ALL DAY LONG !! With our backup ROOKIE running back. Yea, Raye was fine all right… My ASS!

by Badly Browned on Sep 27, 2009 1:38 PM PDT up reply actions

That's not true at all.

Standard football IQ, especially for out team, keep the defense off the field as much as possible. There is no excuse for just handing the ball right back to them with 90 sec left to play.

he’s got a point there though. 17 offensive points without Frank Gore against the Vikings D is pretty respectable. The inability to convert a single 3rd down attempt is rather pathetic, but it was still not a totally awful offensive showing overall

by sam23 on Sep 27, 2009 10:43 PM PDT up reply actions

Technically 17 points for the offense

It wasn’t a bad offensive game. They sucked on 3rd down but moved the football well after the 1st Qtr.

Ok, so I too would have liked to see a pass in there

but given the way our D handled them all game I see the wisdom in what Raye did. However I think we should have passed more earlier. Man I hate that play where Morgan lines up behind the Guard.

by Riding The F Train on Sep 27, 2009 2:01 PM PDT up reply actions

Raye is the Offensive Coordinator, not the Defensive Coordinator

Running the kind of “offense” Raye was running, is no offense at all. It’s really just a kind of second-rate defense. Those last two drives, the 49ers needed an OFFENSIVE Coordinator.

An offense whose only objectives are:
  a) run clock
  - and –
  b) don’t turn the ball over

…is an offense that will NOT run clock, and WILL turn the ball over, after the inevitable 3-and-out.

An offense that plays not to lose is an offense that WILL LOSE. And, as someone said a year ago: I want WINNERS!!

Why couldn't McCovey have hit the ball just three feet higher??

I know he wasn't...

I’m just trying to point out that by running the type of weak offense that he did at the end of the game, that Raye was thinking more like a defensive coordinator, instead of like the offensive coordinator he’s supposed to be.

Why couldn't McCovey have hit the ball just three feet higher??

trying to us Site Decorum..hope I do

We showed the league well enough a few things, both good and bad. We showed that we have a Offensive play caller that doesn’t know how to change things up. We showed that our offense cannot control the ball. We showed (at least in my mind) that Shaun Hill can do at least as well against a good team as “the great white hope”

We showed that no matter what we’re still in the game, we made mistakes a lot of them. The question is how we handle this. The questions are on Sing. Yes they are on Ray be buthe need to be on Sing as well.

by ChesapeakeBay9er on Sep 27, 2009 1:31 PM PDT reply actions

There were some good things about this game

Outstanding D. Good special teams. Hill really came through for us (I’m starting to become a fan). Vernon Davis is starting to shine for us.

Our play calling is horrible. No inventiveness, no killer instinct. I’d rather have Sing call the plays. Defense in the 4th q sucks. So does offense.

by smileyman on Sep 27, 2009 1:32 PM PDT up reply actions

We just need to take some risks

The 49ers are not good enough to play safe. Teams with mediocre talent (let’s face it, 49ers are not an elite team talent-wise) need to take some chances.

I think (and hope) Raye will learn from this game.

0-11 on 3rd down

People can blame Roman for not playing like a safety and not pushing Lewis out of the endzone, but it came back down to Raye’s playcalling and the execution on the offensive ball. We got away from the screen and we don’t adjust at all to those 8/9 man fronts during the game. When the pass game was working for us, we abandoned it too quickly.

Many of us knew it was going to be a close game. Wish we would have come out on top, but now we have video of things to get fixed and if anything, we know the team still has things to improve on.

Going into this game Hill was the 3rd best QB in the league on 3rd down situations. We’ve got to convert those. Part of that is Hill, but I blame Raye more.

but it came back down to Raye’s playcalling

Roman had good coverage on the guy.

The ball was thrown where only the reciever could catch it. The reason I don’t put the blame on Roman is because he should not have been the only one covering that guy. All they had to do was keep them out of the endzone, three guys should have been there to knock that ball away and Roman was clearly the only one who committed to sticking anyone.

The conservative offense was good for a win for fifty-nine minutes and fifty-eight seconds.

If that pooch punt had been downed on the one-yard line. If one of Favre’s passes had been intercepted. If the refs hadn’t been in the tank for the Vikes. There’s a lot of things that could’ve been different.

Myself, I would have liked to have seen a rollout and high efficiency pass to VD on that last third and six, but, hey, he dropped the last pass.

This was a well-played game. Gore out, but they played tough. And next week expect Sheets to be activated. Gore rested all week and was hurting after the first play from scrimmage.

NOT TRUE

It worked for us true, but winning a game means making adjustments and doing things like getting a first down on the most crucial possession of the game. Raye failed because he couldn’t mix it up. PLUS it’s not like this is the first game he’s left the defense hanging out to dry by not picking up a first down (Arizona anyone?)

Are you kidding me?

Were there really people in the gameday thread saying “well, the offense is good enough, at least!”
Do you really think the 49ers defenders tromped out onto the field thinking, “well the offense has been solid enough to get us a lead!”

The offense today was horrendous, and quite possibly the worst I have ever seen on third downs. No one in their right mind should be any less than outraged, let alone content, with what took place while our offense was on the field today.

I swear he didn’t have full possession of the ball before his knee went down out of bounds, but it should never have gotten to that point. the team could have run out the clock by getting one more first down and didn’t have the stones to do it and instead 3 runs up the middle. That really pisses me off more than anything. the game was ours and we pissed it away.

We tried to run a few quick passes earlier and the Vikings blew those plays up by having the DE run straight up field like they were on the final drive. The 49ers tried a quick pass on the play Shaun Hill was called for grounding.

They should have run a screen.

Those two TE screen plays they ran were beautiful, if only the had decided to use them on a first or second down, or at the end of the game. You have to use some creativity, not just run it right up the middle. At least a toss outside, something, anything, other than what hasn’t been working the entire game.

by Badly Browned on Sep 27, 2009 1:40 PM PDT reply actions

Yeah

I’m starting to get on the Hill bandwagon. He had a beautiful drive that quarter—we should let him throw more and see what he gives us.

Bleep that thankfully! That's not the way to look at it. We lost a game, we had it but we lost it.

There are things that need to be addressed. The question is can the coaches show up and build them both upt and down. Let’s stop making this a big thing and stop considering the Rams game a little thing. The Rams game is nowo a big game. At least a learning game. We learned some things and we will learn again.

WTF?? And what the fuck is up with that last catch in the end zone?? They have the camera angle on the back line, it sure looked like his toe was on the line, if not against it to me but when it came time to show the angle again in slow motion it dissapears?? wtf.. ps OUR PLAY CALLING WAS TERRIBLE IN THE FIRST HALF..

Eh

We can’t blame the refs for this loss. This is all on us. It’s on the terrible play calling on that last drive. The dropped interception that would’ve sealed it for us. The so-called “prevent” defense that let Brett go 80 yards. The horrible 3 down conversion percentage.

You get the idea. We had plenty of oppurtunities to put this one away and we didn’t. Great teams put the game away when they can—if they don’t they’ll get beat. That happened to us today.

Here’s hoping they fire Raye as I think he’s 80% of the problem.

Yes

Lots of blame on that last play. Farve had been trying that circle around the pocket act for a few plays to buy time and the 49ers didn’t adjust. Awful coverage allowing a 1-1 pass to the end zone on the final play of the game. Overall the play took 9 seconds, too much time for the defense to stay in coverage, even blanket coverage.

The Niners played not to lose instead of playing for the win at the end of this game. The Vikes had three timeouts left with the two minute warning already gone. If the Niners actually threw the ball on that last drive instead of running, they could have won the game. Just throw the ball to Bruce or Davis on that last drive, run the clock off and they would have won that game. They played not to lose and they lost. No complaining from me about Gore, the refs, or the announcers. I blame the offensive staff for this loss.

it’s valid to say anything lost the game for the 49ers other than roman’s piss poor individual effort on the last play…

all of the stuff everyone is citing wouldn’t have mattered if roman is an NFL-caliber pass defender…it was his responsibility to knock the ball down or make sure the WR doesn’t catch it in bounds. he did neither, and so the niners lost. if he does his job, an unbelievably easy one i might add, the niners win. pure and simple.

i don't see anything wrong...

with the play-calling on the Niners last OFF drive. on 3rd down, they worst thing that happens with a run (barring a fumble) is MIN has to go 80 yds or more in 90 seconds with 0 timeouts. the worst thing that happens with a pass (barring a pick) is an incomplete pass that preserves MIN’s last timeout, meaning they’d have to go 80 yards or more in 90 seconds with 1 TO. i think running isn’t a bad decision in that circumstance. obviously, whether they run or pass, they’re trying to get the first. there’s no way of knowing if a pass would have been any more likely to make a 1st down than a run.

and as i’ve been saying, even if we assume that the play call on 3rd down was fucking horrible, it still comes down to roman making a pee-wee league-difficulty play at the end.

It was just the “magic” again. Which made me die inside. But the playcalling was fine! I mean, we lost, thats just how it is, but man does it make me want to blame someone… But I don’t think there is really anyone to blame. Perhaps Roman, but still…. we did well.

by Poundtherock on Sep 27, 2009 2:16 PM PDT up reply actions

Really Danny?

I’d think as the stats guy you’d be raging against that call. There’s a really good chance of success on short passes, and a really low chance of success on runs up the middle. A successful play puts the game away, whereas an extra timeout would give them ~20 extra seconds of clock time, if that.

i'm not saying...

it was the right call. it’s 6 in one hand, half dozen in the other. my point is that it’s not so aggregiously disgustingly bad of a call to say that that’s the main reason they lost, which is what many have been saying on the threads.

we can debate how much what happened before the last play contributed to the loss, but the fact of the matter is that they would still have won the game with all of it if it weren’t for roman being a JV-level DB when it comes to ball skills…or perhaps not correctly executing an of his zone reponsilities on that play…or perhaps not trying to make the WR catch the ball out of bounds. it was an abysmal execution from roman on that play, in combination with his passive defending, which is the reason he lost his job in the first place.

As I know everyone watched the game, I’m not going to rehash everything but I think it speaks volumes that there are no longer “moral victories.”

Not many people expected us to go in there, on the dome opener no less, and have a chance.

As the vikes fans said on the train by the way, vikes fans really nice people, better the the dbag seahwaks fans “today god is a vikings fan.”

There prayers were answered, we did EVERYTHING but win the game.

Special teams big play, yardage on first down, shut down ap, and getting VD involved were all keys to the game, at least in my opinion.

this sucks, i will see that play god knows how many times (i’m up in vikes country) but we will find a way to rally around this.

feel sorry for the rams and anyone else we play…because we can hang with ANY TEAM.

see you in January Vikes

I hate Favre so much that...

if they somehow managed to play against Dallas in the playoffs, for the first time in my life I’d pull for Dallas. Favre must be crushed. He throws crap up like he has always done and it is rediculous. The catch was amazing though and I tip my hat to Greg Lewis. Favre will only break Vikings fans hearts. Was I the only one who noticed him being warn out as the game went on? He looks old and worn down already. He will not make it through an entire season and if he does, he will implode just like last year with the Jets.

On a brighter note we took it to the Vikings without Frank-freaken-Gore. How impressive was that? How bout VD? Oh yea hes a bust. I think today VD gave a big “Suck It” to 9ers fans whove been hating on him and douchebags like Chris Cooley who think hes overpaid. The 9ers are not a great team yet but they are dam good. I feel bad for the Lambs next week cuz were gna kick the hell out of them.

i think cofee can be a very very good asset

i think coffee can be a very very good asset, specially with a hobbled gore, yes there was one play he had daylight but hesitated instead of hauling ass like gore would of but he will learn, i also think they need to mix in more outside runs, making it to easy for the defense running it right up the gut everytime. they also need to trust hill more, start working the pass just a tad bit more, i think hes ready for it then we can make our running game even more effective, cause honestly besides seatle our running game hasnt been that impressive and i blame it on the run it up the middle every time philosophy

Are your little feelings hurt

Who cares what the announcers did. What really matter was what the ref’s did. They gave you guys and of non calls and missed calls all over the place. If the game had been call in a more honest way you would not have been in the ball game to lose by 3 points. Next time tell your owners to pay the refs more. They called a lousy game even the last was reviewed so they could try and negate it.

huh?

They gave the 49ers calls and non-calls? So I take it Shawntae Spencer really was taunting. Or Justin Smith really was providing unnecessary roughness when he tackled Favre as he threw the ball? Riiiiiiight.
