For What It's Worth. A Look Into 49er Football.

Let's face it, this was an excruciating way to lose a football game. One of the toughest losses I have seen since our contending years. But lets put it in perspective for a second. We lost our best offensive player on the 4th play of the game, were completely dominated for the first 15 minutes, had two horrible calls go against us, were in a hostile environment against the leagues best RB's and on of NFL's greatest QB's ever and it took a miracle play to beat us. We didn't convert a 3rd down and allowed a 101 yard kick return. In the past if you added this all up it would look like a 41-0 loss. But our team stood tow to tow with the Vikings, a team some predicted to win the NFC.

Just think about where the franchise was one year ago. We were among one of the leagues worse and most disrespected teams, our QB situation was in shambles, you all remember JTO right? We had a head coach that was on the brink and had been so for a year or so, an offensive coordinator who in no way fit into the system we were attempting to implement, and we have absolutely no thought of playoffs. If anyone had brought that up to Nolan I am sure he would have pulled a Jim Mora on us. Then came Mr. Singletary and the implementation of a new 49ers theory of defense first. In his first game he all but kicked Vernon Davis out of the stadium and dropped his pants at halftime. Shortly after that he replaced JTO with Shaun Hill and the rest is history. A 7-5 record later the 49ers stand in sole custody of 1st place with wins over both of our major competitors.

And just look at the aura around that bay area regarding this team, it is almost a shock that we lost the way we did to Minnesota. But lost in that shuffle is how we played, the pure intensity of our team and the willingness to never give up. Fans, staff and writers are seeing the new era of San Francisco 49ers football right in front of there face and you know what? The excitement we have right now has not been matched during at the very least the last decade. It's a new found sense of purpose a swagger our team walks around with and the passion our coach brings. Every single 49er has bought into this from Frank Gore all the way down to Brian Jennings. Did anyone see the hug Singletary gave to Hill after the lead changing TD pass he threw? What about the harsh lashing that Glen Coffee received following his tragic attempts at blocking? Or Coffee's response today which represents what this team is all about?

We have a few tough weeks ahead and we will not win all the game but if we can get to the half way mark at 5-3 or 4-4 this team will be set for a playoff run late into December. And could you ask more? The entire season has taken on a new premise following this loss to Minnesota. It's no longer weather or not we will make the playoffs. It's who will we face and where will we be seeded. Could anyone have imagined this one year ago? The future of San Francisco 49ers football is bright, we have two 1st round picks next season, maybe even more depending on a certain situation which I will not delve into. We have the best cap situation in football with pretty much no dead money and tens of millions to spend. Our defense is anchored by one of the best players in all of football and our youngsters such as Vernon Davis, Joe Staley, Manny Lawson, Shawntae Spencer and Dashon Goldsen are stepping it up and proving their worth. Today I am extremely excited to be a 49er fan and cannot wait until we are ready to contend with the big boys and I will tell you this, it's going to happen sooner rather then later. Much sooner!!!!!
