Week 3 NFL Power Rankings and the 49ers
We're back today with a rundown of some of the subjective power rankings floating around the Internet, drawn primarily from some of the bigger media sites. We're mixing things up a bit going forward in that this will sort of be the yin to Florida Danny's DVOA yang. Those are not power rankings in the traditional subjective sense, but they do provide a more objective look at the NFL top to bottom. Whether you agree with it or not, the rankings do offer some insight into the power structure of the league. Accordingly, we'll continue with his DVOA analysis coming out Wednesday's after my own subjective power ranking analysis.
Also, as requested, I've included bullet points with the rankings for the rest of the division. I have ESPN and The Big Lead posted first, with the rest of the rankings appearing after the jump.
ESPN - #15 - Nothing quite like a home game against the Rams to cleanse the palate following the taste of bitter defeat.
- Arizona - #19
- Seattle - #23
- St. Louis - #32
The Big Lead - #10 - If Mike Singletary had it to do over, would he still employ the prevent in the waning moments of the Niners’ loss to the Vikings? Probably not. But his team is the clear NFC West frontrunner at the moment, even though that’s like saying Mark Paul Gosselaar’s had the best post-Saved by the Bell career.
- Seattle - #19
- Arizona - #20
- St. Louis - #29
Fox Sports - #12 - RECORD IS JUST RIGHT: Damn you, Brett Favre. If he would have just stayed retired, Mike Singletary's Niners would be 3-0 and the talk of the NFL this week. Still, this swarming defense will keep the 49ers in the playoff hunt all year long, as long as Frank Gore misses only 2-3 games with his ankle injury.
- Arizona - #19
- Seattle - #21
- St. Louis - #30
CBS Sports - #17 - They're one Brett Favre laser away from being 3-0. The defense is really making strides. They have to play without Frank Gore for a couple of weeks, which hurts.
- Arizona - #18
- Seattle - #19
- St. Louis - #30
Pro Football Talk (via NBCSports.com) - #15 - A tough loss with an important lesson. As they have more late leads, they'll learn how to not blow them.
- Arizona - #22
- Seattle - #24
- St. Louis - #31
NFL.com (Brandt) - #16
- Arizona - #20
- Seattle - #25
- St. Louis - #32
NFL.com (Brooks) - #13
- Arizona - #18
- Seattle - #24
- St. Louis - #29
NFL.com (Carucci) - #8
- Arizona - #16
- Seattle - #21
- St. Louis - #31
WhatIfSports.com - #10
- Seattle - #22
- Arizona - #23
- St. Louis - #28
Average 49ers Ranking: 12.89
Average Cardinals Ranking: 19.44
Average Seahawks Ranking: 22.00
Average Rams Ranking: 30.22

Big Lead overlooked
I don’t think Sing had a problem with the “prevent” since he said he wasn’t running it. I think he would have passed on 3rd down, or even benched Roman for that play. He is autrocious.
Good to see
we didn’t move down too much.
I think if anything we proved even more than in our first 2 games that we are a legit team. If anything we should have moved up, in my opinion.
Just imagine if that last play never happens. Then what spot are we in?
I notice that
the perfesser, John Clayton, consistently underrates the Niners. Then again, I consistently underrate John Clayton. Just saying.
I saw on the NFL Network, I think it was last night, that the receiver on that fateful play wasn’t Roman’s responsibility. They were playing four quarters in the endzone so that should have been someone else’s man.
But let’s face it. One first down, Manny getting to Favre a half-second earlier, any one of those dropped interceptions, you could probably name ten things that if any one of them had gone differently the Niners would have come out as winners. That says a lot about the team.

Since the guys do win and lose as a team
I’ve wondered how many guys were having a “it’s my fault we lost” thought. Bly’s dropped pick. Smith just missing Favre by running too far to the outside. Coffee for missing the huge cutback lane on his 2nd down on the last possession. Raye for not having Hill pass the ball on early in second to last possession. Spencer for signaling incomplete for the (atrocious) taunting call. Roman for barely missing an INT three plays before the winner, then just missing breaking up the miracle.
I’m sure there’s more. As much as we fans focus on Raye and Roman, I think many guys are pointing out how the little things throughout the game make the difference.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
If that last play doesn't happen,
I guarantee we’d be in the top 10. As it is, 12 to 15 ain’t bad. So long as we beat the tar out of the sorry lambs this coming Sunday, our post-season aspirations are fine. Missing Gore hurts, but hopefully he’ll be back by the time we go to Houston…which is after our bye week.
Thats weird
that NFL.com would have them at #16 when NFL Total Access had them ranked at #10 yesterday
nfl.com
Those 3 for NFL.com are specific columnists, not the site in general.

not sure
I didn’t do the power rankings post last week (it went up as a FanPost), so I forgot to check. I’ll keep an eye out going forward though.

Favre was throwing it endzone the whole way
So I don’t post here often but found this video on youtube of the Favre touchdown from a different angle.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=evu1g4XKq_0
In the post game Favre said he didn’t practice that play and had no idea who he was throwing to. From this video you can see he was lying.
The formation is a 4 WR set with 2 on each side. In this video you can clearly see the 2 WR on the right side do 15 yard curls and are open quickly but Favre isn’t looking in that direction. Instead he is looking to his left. Here the outside receive is doing another 15 yard curl (easier to see on the broadcast video) and I believe this is who Favre is giving a weak Pump-fake to. After that his eyes are on Jennings, the slot WR on the left, the whole way.
Farve was going for all the glory the whole way instead of the 15 yard curls. Another lie for Farve.
Favre was throwing it endzone the whole way
At the end I meant to say" After that his eyes are on Lewis, the slot WR on the left, the whole way.
With no time...
… and no timeouts, of course he’s going to look at the only target(s) that are going to get to the endzone. Even if he’s never run the play in practice before, the terminology tends to describe where each receiver is going.
how could you post that video...
most of it consists of happy Viking fans which is to say I just lost my lunch.
Pablo's not fat. He's just got body.

Who cares
I like to be under the radar. Shaun Hill has a great record and is under the radar. We will surprise em all at the end.
How many times has Joe Montana thrown an interception in a super bowl?
I Love The
Saved By That Bell name drop, that was epic. It’s funny how one play can have the 49ers drop to 16, just looking at one of the rankings, i mean they would have been top 10 on that site if they had won right? It’s kinda a joke. I would say that 12 sounds about right!! A win over the Rams and Falcons and i would put them in the top 7.
Playoffs? Playoffs? Playoffs? Your Talking about Playoffs? Yes Sir I am!!!!!!!!!!!

This one surprises me:
CBS Sports – #17 – They’re one Brett Favre laser away from being 3-0. The defense is really making strides. They have to play without Frank Gore for a couple of weeks, which hurts.
* Arizona – #18
* Seattle – #19
* St. Louis – #30
really 3/4 of the NFC west is in a row..now i have to go see what the rest of that chart looks like.
Oh come on a 1-2 team (Steelers) at 13 when the Broncos(i know they have played 2 bad teams)3-0 at 15.. reminds me why i don’t tend to listen to that talking head.
Judgment day is coming!
Just a late note
No one has mention how poorly the ST played as well. 180 yards from Harvin on 4 Kick returns. Most of all, that 101 yard for a TD. No one was even close to him !
