Hating The Rams

"I think the Rams will always be the 49ers' biggest rival. It doesn't matter that they no longer play in Los Angeles. If the Rams played their home games on Mars, it would still be a rivalry." - Roger Craig

I've been thinking whether people still view the Rams as a rival now that it's been 14 years since the Rams left LA. The rivalry's certainly had some of the spice taken out of it by the move to St. Louis, but I see those unis and steam comes out of my ears. The Raiders? Bah, an AFC team will never be a rival. You can't have a rivalry with a team you play once every five years. The Cowboys? OK, we've had our moments, but again, not an intradivisional rival. We still play the Rams twice a year, they still have the same whiny little bitch attitude and they've still got a ton of fans in LA. I hate them with every fiber of my considerable being.

Please sprinkle this thread with stories about how you hated Kevin Greene and his smug grin, how you called Jim Everett "Chris" to his face after his pussy dive in the NFC title game, how you popped champagne corks when the St. Louis Call Girl finally croaked and how Kurt Warner's wife still looks like a man.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

Rivalries wax and wane....

…. but never die. I’ll always hate the Rams,

But sometimes the hate isn’t so hot. It’s just simmering right now because the Rams are currently such losers. They are the dog we love to kick.
But if StLouis ever gets their shucks together in the next few years, so that we’re both NFCWest contenders at the same time…. watch out, baby!

Actually, the Cards are developing as worthy rivals over the last few seasons. SF/AZ matchups have been tight, heated, and crazy games lately.
Diggin that.

I just don't hate them like I used to

The fact that they haven’t been in LA for so long, and the fact that they’ve been fairly bad the last few year, kind of takes the steam out ot the fire. I’ld say I have more of a mild disdain for them. The team I do feel us building a rivalry with is Arizona. Over the last few years, the games we’ve had with them have felt more intense.

Don't trust this guy. He lies.

so ...

do you stay “rivals” with a team if they go 0-16?

what about 1-15?

Sure I hate the rams.

But that didn’t stop me from screaming, “BRUUUUUUUUUUUUCE” the 1st time he made a catch for us in the home opener last year.

Actually I think you have to look at the Cardinals as our big rivals now. For the past few years it seems like one of the two teams always takes both games in the season, and they’re always exciting despite whatever the teams records are.

Plus, I will always laugh hysterically whenever I think about our 2004 season when we went 2-14 and won both games against the them.

First of all, its spelled LAMS

The hate is largely gone with them not being in LA anymore. My most hated team growing up was the Packers. Besides them knocking us out of the playoffs every year, they were my best friends favorite team (along with the Dodgers and Lakers,) completing my Tri-fecta of hatred.

+1

On hating the Packers too. mostly for Favre though.. and guess what? that hasn’t changed yet.

old Hate list -

1 – Dallas Cowboys
2 – Green Bay Packers
3 – St. Louis Rams
4 – Seattle Seahawks
5 – Arizona Cardinals?

______________________________________________________________

Updated 2009 Hate List –

1 – Dallas Cowboys (site decorum)

2 – Minnesota Vikings (as of Sept. 27th, 2009 – all this season & as long as they have site decoruming Brett Favre, seriously, please eat site decorum and die – site decorum, I HATE that piece of site decorum)

3 – Arizona Cardinals (never used to actually hate the Cards, but it’s been pretty easy during our last 3 games with them)

4 – Seattle Seahawks (still kind of a good-natured hatred though)

5 – Green Bay Packers (ever since the 90s playoff games, site decorum those guys)

6 – Pittsburgh Steelers (now that their fans are boasting about 6 superbowl rings – they’re 6-2, we’re 5-0)

7 – St. Louis Rams (less and less of an LA team, and it’s just hard to work up hate for a team that’s trying really hard to be this year’s 08 Detroit Lions – their place on this list will probably be replaced whenever LA finally gets a new team)

New Hate List Candidate? – New York Jets (too many of the fans I know are always comparing Rex Ryan to Mike Singletary saying they’ve got their own “Singletary” too – and if the Niners prove the Jets are the reason Crabtree decided not to sign … and we don’t get the Jets first round pick next year …)

Old Hate List Candidate – Oakland Raiders (Al Davis is another thing altogether, but I mostly have just always thought the Raiders are funny – rivals? yes – hated enemies? they don’t really merit that

I have to agree with #3

that in recent years, the division rivals have become the Cards. It seems like its always a close game and fought with every drop of blood and sweat that each team has to offer one and other

I listened Singletary’s interview on KNBR last night and I loved every bit of it. They asked him about the whole rivalry situation and mentioned the Bears etc. Singletary replied with the best reply you could give saying that he wants his team to treat every game like it’s a rival :)

Speaking of the Bears..

..ever seen the 85 Bears episode of America’s Game? Classic Rams. They go to Soldier Field and whine about the cold. “Why don’t they put a dome on this place,” says one player.

Niners go there three years later when it was about 10 degrees colder and instead of whining go out and win.

Classic Niners, classic Lambs.

Pretty good

I will have to go with Green Bay at 2. And move the Rams to 6. Just personal preferance. I believe in hate relativity.
Oh and I officially can’t stand the Favre/Minn love train. It has proven to be powerful. And it needs to come to a screeching halt. I almost can’t watch espn.

Yeah, if anything, I've actually started to like the Packers.

Thanks largely to former Cal favorite, Aaron Rogers.

My pessimism goes to the point of suspecting the sincerity of the pessimists.

You do have to give him credit for how he stepped in and just replaced Favre right in the middle of one of Favre’s will I/won’t I offseason indecisive (site decorums).

I just hate L.A. in general

Even though both of my parents were born down there and their families moved to Northern California. I was raised to be wary of anyone from south of Fresno. I do have friends from Lala Land, though.
Anyway, my rivals would include:
Packers
Seaducks
Arizona
NY Giants
NY Yankees
Well, any team from the NYC Metro area
Raiders
The poor Rams. I hope they get better so we can feel even better about beating them.

Alaska is a state, dammit! Can I get a Niner game on TV up here?

Being in the Military

now for over 20 years, I have hated teams most 49er fans wouldn’t with the exception of Dallas. I was stationed in texas for 6 years had to listen to Cowgirl fans, Hated it. I was stationed in the D.C. area for 6 years and had to listen to deadskin fans, sounded just like cowgirl fans, then I was stationed in Tampa for 4 1/2 years. Buccaneers (most replace the b with "F") not as bad as the other two, but god I got sick of hearing them say basically the same as the other two! Of course I always hated the Packers, and the Raider’s (started when they went to L.A.) and Rams. Just I have a real disdain for the first 3 I mentioned.

Seahawks are the reason I cant watch Niner games...

on a regular basis anymore. Living in Oregon the NIners were our “regional” team for NFC until realignment gave us the Seahawks instead, so that alone has given me a special hate for them. It is a bit sad that realignment, and the Rams going to St Louis kinda robbed us of our division rivalries and forced us to biuld new ones. For me its easy to hate the Seahawks, the Cardinals I think are developing as our best division rival though, the games have been very closely played the last 3 years, and if its us and them for the division the next few years, that can really develop. so, since were doing hate lists, Ill step up.

Old Hate List:
1. Cowboys
2. Rams
3. Packers
4. Saints
5. Seahawks

New Hate (say, the last 5 years or so

1.Cowboys (One of the reasons I love the way were performing so much is the enduring hope well meet the Cowboys in the playoffs this year and kick them out again)

2. Seahawks (See above, how dare you take my Niners games from me, now I got to watch a streaming broadcast in Danish every week. also the fans are insufferable, and we have a lot of them here)

3. Rams (Still love to see them lose, no matter how they change the unis or locations.)

4. Cardinals (The games are always close, I think right now the respect/hate factor is about 50/50, gonna take a few hard fought close games for division/playoffs to change that)

5. Cowboys again. (Come on, admit it. thier failures, even the little ones, sustain you too, dont they? Okay, dont wanna do that, then uh, the Bears. Sure, why not, still mad about the Briggs thing)

how you called Jim Everett “Chris” to his face after his pussy dive in the NFC title game

Two words “Jim Rome”. Does anyone else remember when Rome kept calling him “Chris” and Jim, responded with, “Say it one more time!” And Rome replied, “Chris” proceeded by a wimpy tackle of Everett taking Rome out of his seat?

I’m glad you posted that video. I had forgotten about some elements of the game that no longer exist. John Robinson walking around without headphones, no head coach does that any more. Also, how could I ever forget the kickers who didn’t wear a shoe on their kicking foot, that trend needs to come back. Finally, listening to Madden and Summerall at their pinnacle.

I also don’t remember a thing about this football game. I didn’t even remember the Rams were the NFC Championship opponent. I have feeling the 49ers blew them out of the water. I remember the Broncos in the SB, well at least watching the game 1st half. No clue if I bothered to pay attention the 3rd Quatrer but checked into the 4th to watch the post game celebration.

I never really grew to hate the Rams. Seriously, back in that era we kicked the snot out of them, at least when it mattered the most. In 1999 at their peak I know the Rams did a ton of mouthing off but I always counted on Jim Mora Jr. to screw up any potential battle so just said, “thank you sir, may I have another”.

1999 Rams

I hated that team. I hated Kurt Warner and his receivers that always seemed to fall down and escape any contact.

Yea....that sucked. Makes me hate Lawrence Phillips evenmore!

Had he made that block it mightve been harder for the Lambs to make the nice run they did.

no rivalry here

i don’t feel any rivalry with the rams. i never did. even back in the day we had better rivalries with the cowdivas and the packers. now i’d say its the divas(i hope crab goes to dallas i swear lol) the cards, seahawks, and now the VIKINGS (this is the most painful loss we’ve had since the good ole days. i’m starting to think it’s a great thing we lost this game last week)
sing is going to bring the pain to the rams. rivalry? no. i actually feel sorry for the rams lol

I only hate ONE Rams fan

He’s a douchebag and I always seem to get in a fist fight with him whenever I see him wearing his lambs jersey.

There is a reason they make them yellow.

The Rams taught me the concept of hatred

When you’re 4 years old and growing up in SF circa 1978 what does your life consist of? Seseme street, day care, yoga, hanging out with mom…how can a kid in that situation learn to hate? I remember the first time my dad took me to a 49er game and it was against the Rams. My dad explained to me that the Rams played in LA, the center of all evil in the universe and that their players were the scum of society. I remember a pick up truck pulling a full size gallows with a full sized, authentically uniformed Ram effigy sentenced to die by eternal strangulation. People wore their “Fourty Fucking Niners” starters to the game and didn’t worry about whether a four year old heard their curses of the hated rams. The evil Rams defeated the 49ers that day and I cried all the way home, than painted a star wars action figure to look like a ram player and burned it in my backyard.
