49ers-Rams Wednesday Injury Report
The 49ers find themselves facing a rather banged up St. Louis Rams squad. The 49ers injury list includes many more players, but Frank Gore and Reggie Smith are supposed to be the only two players missing this Sunday. The Rams could be rolling out Kyle Boller at QB and one player not listed below is WR Laurent Robinson, who was placed on IR a couple days ago.
I mentioned before that the 49ers have no excuses for this game, and with many of the Rams injuries and suspensions, the "no excuse" mantra rings even louder. No Coffee? Better be no problems. We'll see how things develop, but conceivably the Rams could be without a pair of offensive tackles, their QB and half their secondary. I'd expect CB Ron Bartell to play, but we'll see about S James Butler.

Brandon Jones
I haven’t heard anything other than he is participating in full-practices. Does he have the green light to play this weekend?

Jones
I mentioned it somewhere else but it sounds like he and/or Hill will be active this Sunday. Gore will be inactive and since the team did not promote another running back, that’s one more open roster spot.

Interesting
Any thoughts on who might fill that roster spot?

It's just the active roster, right?
Jones was already on the 53 man roster so essentially he switches off with Gore. One of those 8 inactive players is going to fill Reggie Smith’s spot. Who was put on the inactive list when Ahmad Brooks was cleared last week?

roster
Correct, Jones is already on the 53-man. I was talking specifically about the 45-man active roster.
The inactives last week were: CB Marcus Hudson, S Curtis Taylor, LB Marques Harris, C Cody Wallace, WR Brandon Jones, WR Jason Hill and DE Ricky Jean-Francois.
The inactives week 2 were: QB Nate Davis, CB Marcus Hudson, S Curtis Taylor, LB Ahmad Brooks, C Cody Wallace, WR Brandon Jones, WR Jason Hill and DL Ricky Jean-Francois
It looks like Marques Harris was inactive to open space for Brooks.

Yep, Maiocco just posted on his blog that both Jones & Hill may play
This has to be the week to get the passing game going. We’re home, familiar opponent, good matchup for us. Yes, if we’re up 34-3 in the 4th quarter I’m all for running most every play (except to give Alex some easy completions in his first reg season game action in two years).
Think about it: with Jones and Hill we can have more three WR sets which we can start throwing from (long and short to those guys respectively) then evenutally run from that formation with the defense in pass defend mode. J-Hill can really earn some future playing time with a solid performance.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.

I think Jason Hill can make some plays in our conservative offense. Of course Jones adds the dimension of the deep ball.

How many different rosters are there
45 active roster, 53 man roster and what else
by manraj76 on Sep 30, 2009 6:15 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Those two and the Practice Squad Roster
8 players are allowed on the practice squad.
However, they are sorta pseudo players. They practice with the team yet are not allowed to be placed on the 45 active roster unless you first add them to the 53 man roster. Also, other teams are free to sign your practice squad player at any time during the season. Finally, if you move a player down from the 53 man roster down to the practice squad the players must meet a certain criteria of eligibility (roughly not a lot of NFL experience) and again that player becomes a free agent meaning other teams can just pick him up.

i apologize for being a newbie,
but what are these reports really based off of? In normal circumstances Monday involves breaking down film and preparing for the week ahead, and Tuesday is an off day. It seems like these things come out wednesday around noon, which to me seems a bit premature since weds afternoon/thursday/friday seem to be the big practice sessions. I’d think that the people that sit out practice on Wednesday morning need a bit more time to rest and recoup from the previous Sunday before going back in full speed.

That's why...
… teams don’t announce the Probable/Doubtful/Out stuff until Friday or Saturday. The list Fooch provides above is just who did and didn’t practice. The only people who show up as “out” are people are generally going to be out beyond this week, as well.
