Projecting the 49ers 53-man Roster One Last Time
It's about that time for one final roster projection before we head into the regular season, don't you think? Teams must have their rosters trimmed down to 53 at some point today and I figure we'll take one last swing at it. With Singletary stating earlier that only a few spots were actually up for grabs, you have to wonder who is secure and who isn't.
One can assume that the last cornerback position, the fifth wide receiver slot and the third tight end slot are positions that can go one way or another, and also whether or not the 49ers keep four halfbacks on their roster. We'll keep this open for discussion, share your thoughts on what you think will go down today. But how about we get to showing you some projections? We'll start with Fooch.
Throughout the last couple weeks Fooch has supplied four roster projections, and we'll link them in order.
Fooch Projection #1, Projection #2, and Projection #3.

KR/PR: Allen Rossum
I'm not sure how strongly I feel about it at this point, what with Crabtree being on considering he may not sign by the beginning of the season. If I was to say what it will look like without Crabtree it'll still be six, but the last receiver on will be Micheal Spurlock. C Cody Wallace also could lose out to Matt Spanos, though I think Bear Pascoe and Marcus Hudson are not in danger of losing spots to J.J. Finley and Eric Green, respectively.
To finish, how about Matt Maiocco's projection, Matt Barrows' projection, and why not, Samuel Lam's projection since it seems to differ so much.

Oh my head is hurting.
But in the wash of all the gloom from last night at least Mike Silver is predicting the Niners will make the playoffs, as a wild card.

Allen Rossum
Could be cut and due to the emergence of Cory Sheets I don’t see why not. It would answer the issue with keeping four rb’s, Robinson and Sheets IMO are bigger assets to the team and I also think that Sheets would be better utilized on KR and some passing packages. Just a thought!

I agree
This is a place to get Sheets onto the roster.

i also agree
or if Sheets is a shoe in, I would like to drop Rossum for Spurlock

Rossums' other value
Is as emergency corner. As it currently stands they would only have four true corners, the rest safeties. I think having Rossum as return man / corner is more important than Spurlock as a return man / extra wideout. In our division we need protection against DB injuries more than we need extra WRs.

Hudsonis our special teams guy and safey/corner DB hybrid
He’s not the guy the you want playing emergency corner guarding a WR in the base D.

PS
Wheres your practice squad list. Wouldn’t they have to be named also?
Judgment day is coming!

no Spurlock?
I thought he did exceptionally well. Better than all of the other receivers.
by StevenC on Sep 5, 2009 11:26 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I would love to have Spurlock.
He’ll make it until Crabtree signs, or maybe we don’t keep Allen Rossum

Zieglers injury will be grounds to cut him
I hope that he dtays on the practice team though. Im a real big fan of youth right now and see good things happening for us in the next few seasons. alot of room to develop

practice squad
is where Ziegler will go, that’s what i feel. Plus i think he will stay on our team also because i don’t think another team will pick up an injured player who isn’t completely proven especially a receiver from the 49ers lol

Alex Boone
Do you think Alex Boone would be a shoe in for a roster spot if he were drafted. I know you have him on your roster, but it’s not like everyone does.
by crevis1987 on Sep 5, 2009 12:23 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
If we had taken Boone in the 6th or 7th round..
I think it would give him more of a chance, but I think that’s because he would have gotten more looks in practice and would be evaluated more intensely. I know there’s a chance we look for a backup on the waiver wire, but Alex Boone has looked really good in-game.

Turnstyle last night
On pass plays. He needs work on pass blocking and we can’t afford for him to be the #1 backup at tackle. Being run by on film and undrafted means he should be a shoe in to not get claimed and end up on the PS

An interesting note from Singletary's press conf.
Not sure how many of you listened to Sing’s post game press conf. but I did and there some interesting comments.. When asked about the final 53 man roster he said that after they look at the film they will make there decisions however they may not be the final decisions. He said they may not have the “right 53 guys” and if not then they go shopping. Those are not his exact words but leaves the door wide open for further roster moves after today. so don’t take the 53 man roster that will be announced today to the bank just yet. I gotta believe that they will looking for OL and DL pick ups off waivers.

WC: Teams ALWAYS look over the waiver wire and think about adding a player or two in the days after the final cuts. That is certainly no revelation by sing.
Hey,it is almost 2pm and the cuts were supposed to be out by 1pm,where are they ?
by TOP_CAT on Sep 5, 2009 1:49 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Well you got Nate Davis right
But you missed almost everyone else.
by bignerd on Sep 5, 2009 11:32 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
That's quite the overstatement, no?
I always said I wasn’t sure how much I stood buy it. :[ I got RJF, I picked one surprise and got it so I totally win.
by Ninjames on Sep 6, 2009 12:19 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
You could be right
Maybe I need to look some more . . . this is what I was referring too.
Last 5 on:
Ahmad Brooks, Kory Sheets, Dominique Zeigler, Alex Boone, Bear Pascoe. Was Ahmad Brooks really on the bubble? I thought he was pretty safe.

I have nothing to do with that.
My projection is after the jump. I posted Fooch’s first.
by Ninjames on Sep 6, 2009 12:29 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I was commenting on Fooch's
Yes, you did a good job. A don’t think anyone was expecting the two surprises and cannot knock anyone for not having predicted that. Grading on a curve you probably get an “A” or at the least a high “B”. I’d at least give Fooch a “C” for predicting Nate Davis at Day 1. He was really pushing the offensive youth movement in his final cuts which did not happen.
