Tony Pashos is a 49er

Photo

by Marta Lavandier - AP

There were a few stories I found regarding Pashos signing a one-year contract with the 49ers, and PFT is reporting it also.  The Offensive Lineman refused to take a pay cut in Jacksonville and has reportedly signed a one year deal worth less than the pay cut Jacksonville was asking him to make.  Obviously this signing is big news for the 49ers, who seemed shot in the foot after Marvel Smith's retiring.

A Quick Look at Pashos

2007 - 2008:  Started all 31 games that he played in with the Jaguars at RT.  In 2007, the team averaged 4.6 yards per carry, and allowed 31 sacks.  In 2008, Jacksonville averaged 4.2 ypc and allowed 42 sacks. According to this "article", Pashos allowed 5.5 sacks in 2008.  For additional info, check out this bio at the Jaguars website

2003 - 2006:  Drafted in the 5th round by the Baltimore Ravens in 2003 and didn't play in the 2003 season (played 6 games in 2004).  Started 7 games in 2005, becoming the starter at the midway point (participated in all 16 games).  Played in and started all 16 games for Balimtore in 2006, when the team allowed just 17 total sacks on the season.  On the first day of free agency in 2007, Pashos signed with the Jaguars.

What's it mean for the 49ers?

Obviously Adam Snyder is the starter, but for how much longer?  Tony Pashos has the experience as an effective starting RT in this league, and should push Snyder all season long for playing time.  Chances are, once Pashos is acclimated to the system, the RT job is his.  The 49ers will also have to release a player to make room for Pashos when the deal is official, any guesses on who that will be?

Nate clements? your sick

Clements is a good player I admit he’s been lousy this preseason, But who else can shut down fitz like he can? he’s a solid player plus he can do some things with the ball once he gets it. Im thinking cody wallace or someone.

did you watch last years game or just check the stats??

we were three sacks away from a victory. Normally after like 4 seconds coverage breaks down especially when your dealing with a mobile qb. romo shrug a few sacks, clements came down to help. outside of that he played good coverage he was suppose to have help over top.

the dallas game he gave owens way too much room like he was afraid of him and then theres the cards who ALWAYS score a hail mary on us

by Joshpreet on Sep 7, 2009 4:27 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

true statement but

owens wasn’t beating us on quick slants or nothing he got away with 3 long passes after the D line failed to make the sack. had Romo in their grasp in then he got away. as far as arizona… Clements isn’t the whole secondary. he has one role, and that’s to guard the #1 wr and how often does he punish Fitzgerald? maybe breaston catches a bomb but he’s a 1000 yd receiver playing slot.

I know it sounds like hyperbole

But the games last year support the claim, though if I were Nate I would play that very down if asked this week. Top WRs still get their no matter whom is covering them. An it’s a new season.

The word from the folks at Big Cat Country (Jags Blog)

The fact that Pashos was released by the Jags was a surprise to say the least. The team had signed him merely 2 offseasons ago to a lucrative (5 yr/$24M) free agent contract. He was a full-time starter for them and hasn’t missed a game with injury the last 3 seasons.

When I looked through the Jags Blog cutdown day thread, the general reaction seemed to be surprise, but somewhat less disappointment than I maybe would’ve hoped/expected. At the same time, I’m taking the fact that the team drafted 2 OT’s in the 1st 2 rounds this year (Eugene Monroe and Eben Britton) as an indication that their team wanted to get younger on the O-Line. Pashos will turn 30 next summer. The Jags bloggers also suggested that this has just as much to do with the Jags GM (Gene Smith) wanting a) to make of Pashos an example—when they demand you take a pay cut and you refuse, they’d rather cut you than back down (sound familiar?) and b) that they want to put the players they draft into the starting lineup ASAP. Nearly all of the players Gene Smith drafted this year made the team. Many of us can’t help but think as fans, and will talk ourselves into the moves our Front Offices make, for better or for worse. The fact that the Jags drafted the two high-round tackles would’ve made Pashos expendable in the minds of many fans—so I think that also may have been influencing the lack of disappointment I saw. What I didn’t see was the kind of jubilation there was among Niner fans when Kwame Harris left town, was signed by the Raiders fleeced Al Davis out of MILLIONS of dollars.

What does this signing mean for the 49ers? Here are some bullet points:
1) They’ve got a good young-ish Tackle for the next year. If he plays well (remember Spikes’ situation last year?) they’re first in line to resign him.
2) They can release Sims if they want (thank the Lord).
OR
3) They’ve got some depth at Tackle
4) Pashos can slide inside to Guard (where he was starting this year for the Jags) if need be.
5) That the Marvel Smith signing/retirement was a disaster, but not crippling in the end.

Marvel Smith

signing was not a disaster…rather a disappointment. A disaster is when you pay him max money and get nothing. we paid Marvel minimum money, the problem is we’re a man down. Thus a disappointment.

by jviet on Sep 7, 2009 9:53 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I suppose.

The team was hoping that he’d be the answer at RT, though. They were smart to structure the contract like they did, so team/$-wise it’s not disastrous, but football-wise it looks like one.

front office showed up

and made amends for the Marvel Smith loss. Thank you! Many options for cuts; depends on what else may happen. With Arizona coming up, don’t see a DB or other defensive player being cut. My guess is Sims or something else on offensive side, perhaps receiver .

by Vertigo on Sep 7, 2009 8:53 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Nice

I’m very happy about this. Now if we can only pass protect.

by goatfather on Sep 7, 2009 9:02 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Great news

Very happy about that. He’s a much better age and has a much better fitness record than Marvel Smith, so assuming we don’t owe Smith any money and can just spend that money that would have gone to him on somebody younger, fitter, maybe not as decorated, but possibly bigger (I think?) then that has to be good business.

Two questions though:

1. Can we assume that the one place they WON’T cut the roster is O-Line? Presumably even if folks on here think Sims and company are not up to much, you don’t add one, subtract one, on the O-Line because then we’re weak on numbers again? TE can’t be cut because they went with two, there’s no back-up FB, they decided not to go with four QB and RB isn’t that plentiful with Sheets on the PS, so WR corps? Or defense?

2. Is it odd that he was signed just for a year? Young-ish, no recent track record of serious injuries? Wouldn’t a two-year deal have demonstrated more faith in your new guy?

by LondonNiner on Sep 7, 2009 9:26 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Great sign but suddenly not as optimistic.

at the beginning of the offseason I had my hopes really high. But as I look at what other teams are doing, I’m seeing we’re simply not doing enough. Even without Crabtree. Remember how fired up coach sing was at press conferences. Now he hangs his head down. I don’t see that same fire. mike Sando just said after spending most of the training camp with the 49ers he feels Seattle will win the div and Arizona right after. I really need to see that intensity form Monday night football a season ago in this first game to get me back to high hopes

by RBoogy29 on Sep 7, 2009 9:58 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hard to Call This

I don’t think anyone know what the Niners will be like this year. Why not hope for the best. I don’t see intensity as the problem; what is the question is whether the talent gap has been closed. The secondary is going to be tested early and often, beginning with game one. Opponent scoring touchdowns through the air will cause the superior running game to be less important. That’s why we have so many DBs I think.

by Vertigo on Sep 7, 2009 10:23 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think our DB situation is A!ok!

I dont think there’s a DB in the league that can chase a wr for 5 secs. you put Nnamdi on Shaun hill for 5 secs he’ll prolly come free without a pass rush lol. I think our Dbs are fine, well are starters at least. we have for Corners who can start in the league. I feel more then compfortable with Goldson back at fs. lewis isnt the best cover ss but he can Jarr some balls loose. Mcdonald did nicely last season, but where is he now. we have more Lbs then we do Dbs I think we have 9. maybe because Sing is/was a LB ehh

by RBoogy29 on Sep 7, 2009 11:08 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Clements was horrible last season,

and even if he rebounds, is still not a premier CB.
Shawntae Spencer, despite being a second round pick, still hadn’t up until this point established himself as a DB fighting for playing time.
Goldson has way too many expectations put on him
Lewis is good in the box, bad in coverage, and somewhat injury prone.
Dre Bly got cut from the Broncos.

Sing isn't hanging his head

He’s a full-time HC who now sees the big picture and understands it’s a 16 game season. You could even argue that his fired up approach at first was because he had a team playing lackadaisical and he wanted their attention and to be better and focus and preparation. Now he has a team that is his, from offseason and training camp forward, and feels better about what he sees.

BTW – Sando certainly has a right to his opinion but he lives in Seattle so he’s likely to be more influenced by their hype. Mike Silver predicts the Niners make the playoffs as WC or Division champs. Plenty of expert opinions to go around.

Never said he was a Seattle fan

I said by living there he’s more influenced by their hype; fans, media, etc. They’ve become the chic pick to take the division from AZ. Once it becomes chic everyone likes to jump on board. That’s usually the one team you can guarantee won’t win it so it works for me. People said the same about SF in ’07, AZ in ’05 & ’06, and of course Seattle last season. All wrong, very wrong.

Same Jags brass

That signed him for 5yrs/ $24M from Baltimore (perhaps the best talent evaluators out there). They certainly thought a lot of him then and now wanted him to take a pay cut (aren’t they the the next cheapest franchise in the NFL next to Bengals?).

Also, 29 isn’t exactly old for a guy with no injury history. Let it play out then judge the brass.

Really?

This guy is better than what we had, which is SMOKE! This guy can play in this league, a proven vet who has played well for the Jags. He looks a lot better than Barry Sims coming off the bench right? Than what is your problem?

I hope they are scouring that waiver wire for ANYONE that can get any kind of pressure on a QB from ANY position! This team with a pass rush is dangerous! This team without a pass rush is DOOMED! Until we can fix the repeat 3rd down and long success by the opposition that happens on EVERY DRIVE, we are gonna need help. I sure hope that Manuski has a plan, but I don’t see any pieces for him to put together a plan! Where is the pressure going to come from? HOW are you going to stop teams from just throwing the ball all the time 80 yards to score? Singletary and Manuski better have something worked out to help improve our anemic pass rush.

We should have drafted Orakpo or some other pass rushing specialist. The Niners look bad when they get to the 4th Quarter and the other team figures out that they cant run the ball on the Niners, but passing works every time!! Almost the exact opposite of the Ray-DUHZ! We can’t stop anyone from throwing the ball and scoring! We HAVE to use a ball control offense just to keep the other team’s offense off the field so they don’t score using the pass.

When the other team’s QB’s have SO LONG to look for an open receiver that they can hit their center wide open in the end zone for a 45 yard TD, maybe then we will address the pass rushing problem. YEA I know the center isn’t eligible (not to mention illegal man down field) , but you get my point. For God’s sake, I could get open given 10 to 15 seconds! And I ain’t no spring chicken!

The Niner’s cant rely on the blitz either because they will get burned eventually! They were hoping Manny Lawson would help, but either they are hiding his greatness from everyone by telling him to play and practice like a fat out of shape loser, or he just plain sucks. I think it is a bit of both. Parys Haralson is the ONLY player besides Justin Smith that applies consistent pressure, and when teams seal those 2 players off, what then? Do we use an egg timer to see how long the Opposition gets to pass the ball? Should we all clap and count in unison 1…2…3.. until the other team’s QB eventually finds an open receiver? That is a LOT of clapping ! We might be worn out by the first half! I have a question. Do we have a PLAN at creating a pass rush, or do we have a PROBLEM creating a pass rush? I sure hope RICKY JEAN FRANCOIS is the real deal !!!

Another year, another chance to hope for the team !!

Oh hell no

Sims sucks also. My point is this guy is a stop gap. They would be foolish to sign him long term at 29.

They need to get a Tackle with one of those 1st round draft picks, and a Pass Rusher with the other.

Why am I looking ahead to the draft already??? Because Mc Boo Foo decided to trade away half the draft instead of filling those 2 positions of critical need. The Niners will suffer this year accordingly and are good for about 6 wins this year.

Let me ask you something

Do you feel the Niners address the 2 biggest areas of concern in the draft-a strong pass rusher and an offensive tackle???

No they didn’t. This team isn’t that Pats and doesn’t have the luxury of using future draft picks when critical needs need to be filled NOW.

The fact Mc Boo Foo decided not to address these issues will force the team to suffer this year.

A weak pass rush will make even a stud CB (who cost millions) look like a fool out there covering a receiver for 5 seconds. Clements talent will be wasted another year.

This team is looking at 5-11 or 6-10 as defenses will blitz the weak RT and have all day to throw the ball since there is no major threat of a pass rush.

by Italia1970 on Sep 8, 2009 8:47 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

right tackle

Do you not believe that Adam Snyder has improved this year with a full camp (minus the injury) at right tackle? Are you not willing to give him a few games to see if maybe he is a possible answer there?

I’m not saying you have to and it seems like you’re not anyways, but I was just curious. Snyder has spent every preseason prior to this moving around between guard and tackle. And if that doesn’t work, it’s entirely possible Pashos could be a short term answer.

I know you were talking about the long term need at right tackle, but I am pointing more to your last point about this season’s record.

by Fooch on Sep 8, 2009 9:51 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Two separate points

Number one, your argument stated “trade away half the draft.” That was false.

Number 2, did it occur to you that there was no strong pass rusher available? Time will tell; perhaps McC missed on one of the available players. We’ll know in a few years. He could’ve drafted someone to shut up the public but if that guy became a bust we’d roast him for not knowing better. Perhaps he does. We also have to let the #10 pick work itself out. RT and pass rusher were 2 of the 4 weak areas I identified along with FS and playmaking WR. They made an upgrade at FS, signed one RT then just did as good as one can do fining another after cutdowns. I can live with that for now. Crabtree has the opportunity to give us the other thing we need: a guy that can take an eight yard pass 45+ yards up the field. If you think a better RT is the difference between “suffering” and winning then you think the team is pretty talented, which means the team will still do fine. An improved Snyder and/or Pashos is better than the last two years of Jennings/Sims/ Snyder playing multiple positions.

You gotta bring ass to get ass.

by SpurredOn on Sep 8, 2009 10:21 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's like this..............

I said half the draft because if your counting on 5th,6th and 7th round players on consistently making major impact on the roster-your in trouble. If you disagree take a look at the starting rosters for all NFL teams and you tell me how many starters on each team are from rounds 5,6 and 7.

Therefore by trading away the 2 and 4th pick-they more or less gave half of the most talented part of the draft away.

2. Everrette Brown-who has looked like a stud so far was there with the 2nd pick. You can say he wasn’t good enough-but with no push rush, the secondary will get shredded as we have seen this preseason-even exposing Clements. Sing has already admitted they don’t have a stud pass rusher on the roster. If you give ANY NFL qb 4 or 5 seconds to consistently scan the field, let alone the likes of Hasselbeck, Warner and Bulger-they will destroy you.

Also, Snyder has developed, but again isn’t a long term answer and is the weakest link on the O line. I would hate to see Gore having to chip pass rushers consistently as opponents key on this weakness.

Good move for the 9ers.

I was pretty sure McCloughan would bring in somebody else – few teams can go with only nine OL. Especially with Sims as the only OT backup. I’m a little concerned about Pashos’ pass blocking, but we’ll have to wait and see on that before jumping to conclusions. He seems to fit our blocking scheme and should catch up quickly on the playbook. Hopefully, he gives Adam Snyder some real competition for the job.

So who gets moved to the practice squad? Obviously, someone with eligibility. Which means DT/E RJF, SS Curtis Taylor, or OLB Diyral Briggs. Who is the most expendable and won’t get picked up immediately when waived? Tough choice here, but I’d go with either Taylor or Briggs because too many teams are looking for defensive linemen to fill in their rotations (Denver?) to let RJF hit the waiver wire. Between Taylor and Briggs, I’d keep Briggs because the team is desperate for effective pass rushers and he appears to be making good strides. Taylor is a physical specimen with a lot of potential, but I think he may clear waivers because any team looking to add a safety to their roster this late is looking for someone who has some game time experience and knows their defense somewhat. And if he doesn’t make through waivers, safeties are easier to find than defensive linemen and pass rushers. But we’ll know soon.

And this team still needs to draft an OT next year so Barry Sims can be put out to pasture.

Jason i heard the 49ers just signed OT Pashos from jacksonville do you think he will bolster the depth on the o line this year

Jason La Canfora, NFL Network
for sure. he’s a capable pro with a lot of starting experience and he may able to give them reps at guard as well. It’s a one-year deal, so no huge cap ramifications. Definitely worth bringing in.

Dr. B, PA
01:32 PM ET
Jason, do you think that it is possible that the 49ers have any shot to get to the post-season this year? If so who will be the guy that gets them there?

Jason La Canfora, NFL Network
I think it is certainly possible. Need Hill to protect football. Run the heck out of it with Gore and Coffee. Play stout D and force turnovers. I like what they are building there for sure. In that division especially, anything is possible.

He forced way too many throws and he wasn’t very accurate. It’s still only one game though, and I thought at least his mobility in the pocket and his arm were impressive.

Solid move

O-Line depth and competition for Snyder. My guess is we’ll now find out who the last man on the roster was when that player is cut, likely a young guy (Taylor?) who will be on the PS and is even less likely to be claimed now by another team than had he been cut in the full wash two days ago. I like that the better between he and Snyder will play. I like that we now have Tackle depth and this is a guy who has played on two run focused teams and for the current OL Coach. Let’s not forget that Snyder was beating out Smith so perhaps the guys has improved as he promised if he could just focus on one position.

Also, with no second blocking TE, Snyder can play LT and Pashos the extra TE in short yardage. One question: might the coaches consider flipping them between series/quarters depending on if we’re ahead and want to call more runs (Pashos) or are trailing and need to pass more (Snyder)?

Bye bye Briggs

Just announced by club … as predicted by MontanaPass, above!

by LondonNiner on Sep 7, 2009 12:47 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

wow really I though Briggs really had a bright future. Do they have to waive a guy still to put him on PS or could they have just dropped this guys straight there?

Judgment day is coming!

by Widowwolf on Sep 7, 2009 12:50 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Good question ...

… I was wondering the same thing. On the club’s official site they don’t mention anything about practice squad. Anyone know whether Briggs can still end up there or whether the fact they’ve waived him puts paid to that?

by LondonNiner on Sep 7, 2009 12:53 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

You have to waive him before PS

The team has to wait 24 hours before offering him a spot on the PS.

ok i feel a bit better now about this because he could be #8

wow.. sounds like you just got a divorce.

Sims provides backup at both LT and RT so he needs to stay.
Hopefully next draft the 49ers will get a good LT who will play both RT/LT for the first season or two and thereby enabling the 49ers to release Sims

I hear you

But we’re competing for a playoff spot this season. Coaches tend to favor the known commodity (Harris) over a young unproven rookie who lined up off-sides twice Friday night. Can’t have those mistakes in the real games. And trust, I want Briggs on the PS. But he is a project; he didn’t show anything until he was playing against the backups Friday night.

You gotta bring ass to get ass.

by SpurredOn on Sep 7, 2009 1:11 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Taylor or Briggs

Either is fine. I assumed it would be Taylor but Sing did mention Briggs as needing some work which is what the PS is for. Plus Taylor plays special teams coverage although either may often have found themselves on the non-dressed game day group. Cutting him now means he’s less likely to be claimed as opposed to is he had been cut two days ago. I certainly hope he makes it through waivers.

by SpurredOn on Sep 7, 2009 1:09 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

As we were talking about yesterday in the thread, I think this is a great signing and as much as i like the idea of sending Taylor to the practice squad, I think we need to go back out and cut Sims, put Taylor on PS and go back out and find another quality tackle. Sims to me is a ho-hum kind of tackle that really isn’t that great and I think we could do better by going out and either getting another young buck to learn from Snyder and Pashos so we got someone for the future.

Judgment day is coming!

by Widowwolf on Sep 7, 2009 12:48 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

There aren’t exactly pro-bowlers at any position but especially O-Line at this point. Any young tackle that is solid would be on a roster out side of being released for monetary reasons. Such as Pashos. I think we got fortunate and just signed the type of player you want.

Only just occurred to me ...

… But the waiving of Briggs means we now do not have any undrafted free agents on the roster (well, none from this year’s draft anyway … obviously our starting QB is one from years gone by!) That’s a good sign, right? That we’re not reliant on picking up waifs and strays but are actually plotting a roster going forward with intelligent draft picks (OK, Pascoe didn’t work out but Coffee, RJF, Taylor, and the future starter Nate Davis) and astute FA signings (Jones, when he’s fit), Harris, Pashos, etc).

I predict a better season than 2008 – ie we become a winning team for the first time in years – and if that does not prove to be enough for the play-offs this year, Sing will be taking the team in the right direction. We have a first-round pick from thi year’s draft still to join, as and when he stops being Rod Tidwell, and we have two first-round picks next year, one of which is from a team with the toughest schedule in the NFL this year. We have our top cornerback to return from long-term injury too. And most of all, we have a group of players united behind a motivational, inspirational head coach.

Go Niners.

by LondonNiner on Sep 7, 2009 1:44 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Even though we don't have any undrafted free agents on the roster

We do have one Bit Miller on the PS, so we could see him on the roster later this year if needed and he clears waivers.I don’t believe any of the others on PS are undrafted FA. .We do have a better squad this year than last year but only in the sense that many of the young guys are a year older and more experienced and a better offensive scheme.

And Sheets and Boone on the PS too

Which makes at least three undrafted FAs on there. Four if Briggs drops on to the PS after waivers. But I guess that’s the perfect place for those type of guys, right? At least we don’t need them on the roster, which cannot be a good thing, to be needing guys that every other team passed up seven times. I recall Maiocco saying that Miller was the type of guy practice squads were invented for. Great that we’ve got a better squad than last year as you say WC-Ninerhead – in this division, that can take us a long way, right?!

Anybody think we might make a move on defense???

I am thinking that we may see a move at DE or NT. There has been much discussion on RJF or Balmer not up to par.. What say you at NN?

by WC-Ninerhead on Sep 7, 2009 2:18 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

A longer criticism

Pashos is an above average run blocker but horrible in the passing game. He will get beat by even an average pass rusher at tackle.

He did well with the Ravens.

He played all year at RT when they only allowed something like 11 sacks all year. Maybe that’s a fluke, I don’t know, but I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt until he shows different. And I don’t think he could be too much worse than Sims.

by MontanaPass on Sep 7, 2009 5:48 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agree about being better than Sims

And perhaps having his former O-line coach from the Ravens will help. Some guys struggle with one team and struggle less with another. Coaching and scheme makes a difference. Also getting cut can wake some guys up.

I getting the shakes again

You know, We wouldn’t have this problem if they did what they should have done from the beginning. I’m tired of the musical chairs. It like rotating old tires when you know you need new ones.Sooner than later, it will caught up and cause you a Major disaster. Signing FA is not not the Answer.

by LASVEGASNINER on Sep 7, 2009 4:46 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

We still need an OT from next year's draft.

Signing Pashos solves the immediate problem, and he got a 1-year contract, which points to the 9ers not counting on him for the long term. But McCloughan does need to stop fooling around and address this decisively by drafting a LT who can back up Staley and take over the RT spot. Boone can hopefully work on his pass pro and eventually become a good backup or starter on the right side.

From one jaguars fan

JagMania65 says:
September 7, 2009 10:33 AM
here’s how that conversation went:

Gene Smith: “Tony, we like you. But $4.3M is too much to pay for a backup tackle who gets four holding penalties and two false starts a game. We’d like you to take a cut to $2.9M.”

Pashos: “I don’t think so.”

Smith: “Then we’re cutting you.”

49’ers: “Tony, we’ll offer you less than that.”

Pashos: “Sounds good to me.”

Cause that doesn’t make sense to sign with the Niners.

Good job,as usual,Scotty !

Another example of Scott McGloughan being first to pull the trigger on getting players in free agency that he targets.Great job,as usual,Scotty !
It has even been reported that Scott is so far ahead of the curve that he had the Niners scouting the Jags preseason game on thursday ,just to study Pashos,in case he was actually released by the Jags ! Can’t say enough about the great job our GM is doing ! I guess Ron wolfe and Mike Holmgren and Bill Parcells were right when they had nothing but gret praise for Scott, saying he was a young ,rising star executive in the NFL, etc !!!
Future looks bright with Scott and sing and Jed !

Sorry, but McClo gets a FAIL on this.

This team’s problems at RT have been ongoing for three straight years and McCloughan has failed to address it decisively in the draft despite having opportunities. The current move with Pashos wouldn’t have been necessary if McCloughan hadn’t signed Marvel Smith, whose back problems were more severe than McCloughan led everyone to believe. It was the failure of that crapshoot that created the incentive for signing Pashos.

And this is only a 1-year deal, so at the end of the year the team is back to where it was before unless they decide to renegotiate Pashos’ contract and give him that $4.5mil/yr. Which would not be a bad deal if he takes over at RT from Snyder and can pass protect adequately.

I Love This Signing

He will be more reliable then either Jennings or Smith, isn’t injury prone. And was good enough to start for both the Ravens and Jaguars. Last time i checked those two teams had a pretty good running game. 49ers have done a good job of picking up solid veterans this off-season bringing in Pashos, Bly, Norris and Harris.

Idea for better pass rush

I know that we need a better rush and since lawson hasn’t been up to par with out expectations, why not switch sides with haralson, since parys is on the side where smith of the dl, smith is always doubled why not put lawson their and haralson with sopoaga or balmer at the other end, just an idea.

by Lyken84 on Sep 7, 2009 5:48 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Lawson

Is a good all around linebacker. But the niners drafted him to be a legit pass rush threat and he has yet to provide that. If you switch up Haralson and Lawson then you are mitigating Haralson’s pass rush ability unless of course you think he could excel with either Sopoaga or Balmer clogging up paths on the outside. Either way i am sure Singletary and company considered it.

Regarding Balmer. All the coaches have praised his off-season and training camp performances but other then one hit on Volek did anyone see anything from him in games?

by nocal81 on Sep 7, 2009 6:12 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

yeah Balmer's definitely improving

He was really, really raw coming out of college so as long as he shows improvement this year I’ll be happy, I can wait for him to really hit his stride for another year.

I’m not nearly as worried about him now as I was last year
