Ask Revenge of the Birds
At last, we meet again. Your 49ers come to town as we start the season against each other for the 4th year in a row. As much as a nail biter as our games usually are, I still can't wait for the start of the season this Sunday. Being as it's a Wednesday and our game being less then 5 days away, now's the time to get any questions out about the Cardinals. I'm sure you guys are just dying to know as much as you can about us. ; )
Here's a few notes that are worth telling heading into Sunday's game:
- Kurt Warner should nearly be 100% by Sunday
- Our running game has surprisingly looked great this season
- Most of us still believe Matt Leinart is our future quarterback
- Only areas of concern would be depth at linebacker and chemistry on offense
Drop as many questions as you want and I'll be checking here to answer them. Let's hope for a good game on Sunday.
Also, if Fooch or somebody could drop one of these on our site that'd be great because I'm sure some of us have questions for you guys.

Warner
Do you think Warner can last all 16 games this year?
by mpotter14 on Sep 9, 2009 12:19 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
After last season I see no reason for him not to.
He took hits last year that normally would have sidelined him. He’s tougher then he gets credit for. Nobody, inlcuding some of us thought he’d make it all 16 games last year, let alone the playoffs and Super Bowl.

What was going on? You guys were getting creamed.

Ah yes
We did. I’m not going to make any excuses. We just stunk in the preseaon. From what we’ve heard, Whisenhunt did ZERO game planning and suspected that some teams(Packers and Broncos) did gameplan against us. The offensive chemistry has been off, but that could be with the loss of Todd Haley. Most of us aren’t worried as several Cardinal players have said their going to unload their playbook/anger this Sunday. ; )

Very eager to be speaking to a cardinal expert..
What is the general diet of a cardinal? What species of cardinal is the easiest to be domesticated? Can I get a seeing-eye cardinal, because I’m allergic to dogs.
…Seriously though, at what point in the season is Wells going to take the job from Hightower, or is he already the starter?
by Ninjames on Sep 9, 2009 1:13 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Most bugs or bird seed. The southwestern branch hopper is the easiest and no, it's a bird, it will fly away.
Anyway, at this point Hightower is the starter but you can imagine seeing a good amount of carries by Wells on Sunday. So far Wells has looked great in the preseason and if he maintains it during the regular season, I could see him passing up Hightower after the bi week if the Cardinals are struggling.
In all fairness to Hightower, he’s looked very good this preseason also and has greatly improved from last year.

Couple things...
1. “it’s a bird, it will fly away” made me laugh so hard and I have no idea why.
2. Did you spell it “bi-week” on purpose, if so, what the hell?
3. Wells kinda scares me.. Hightower does not. So no offense, I hope Hightower is your starter throughout the season. :]
by Ninjames on Sep 9, 2009 1:50 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah don’t know where that came from, “bye week” would be correct and no I didn’t do it on purpose.
As far as Hightower, I don’t blame you much for not being worried about him. But he’s been much improved from last year, averaging almost 5 ypc in the preseason. He slimmed down and got faster. Wells is scary fast for being 230+ pounds though.

1. Does the addition of Coffee to compliment Gore worry you?
2. Is Boldin injured?
3. Is Wells injured?
4. What do you think of the new cardinal coordinators?
5. Are you concerned about the Super Bowl hangover?
6. What’s your prediction?
That’s it for now….oh yeah just to keep you updated, Willis already has 5 tackles, i’m sure there will be more come gameday!! Go niners!!
by sundaysfinest on Sep 9, 2009 3:08 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
1. It does, because speed backs generally are difficult to defend for the Cardinals defense for some odd reason.
2. Boldin has been nursing a hamstring, but didn’t play in the last 2 preseason games and has said he’ll be playing on Sunday.
3. No. Wells tweaked his ankle 3 weeks ago but should be near or at 100% by Sunday.
4. Well Whisenhunt isn’t technically new at offensive coordinator because he called plays his first year here. So I’m not worried there. On defense, Bill Davis has already showed signs of bringing a valid blitz. I am a little worried, but the D can’t get much worse then when Pendergast was coordinator.
5. You can’t really be too concerned since it’s just a statistic. Teams rarely had problems in the 80’s and 90’s getting back to the Super Bowl(you guys should know that), so I don’t see why it should be a problem now. Not to mention we got virtually all of our starters back.
6. I put togethe a segment predicting the Cardinals record game by game, they ended up 10-6. Don’t sound the homer alarm yet, we split the series with you guys in my prediction.

Regardless that's not my point.
Look at the teams that lost up until the late 90’s, most of them were able to come back strong the next year and make the playoffs. I don’t see much of a difference either way as both the winners and losers have targets on their backs the following years.

i guess you make a good point about the Super Bowl of the 90's
1990- Broncos lost to 49ers next year’s record 5-11
1991- Bills lost to Giants next year’s record 13-3
1992- Bills lost to Redskins next year’s record 11-5
1993- Bills lost to Cowboys next year’s record 12-4
1994- Bills lost to Cowboys next year’s record 7-9
1995- San Diego lost to 49ers next year’s record 9-7
1996- Pittsburgh lost to Cowboys next year’s record 10-6
1997- Patriots lost to Packers next year’s record 10-6
1998- Packers lost to Broncos next year’s record 11-5

yeah I think I'd rather have losing seasons then lose 4 straight.
But as you can see, a lot of these teams were able to get back to the playoffs the next year. I don’t know if it’s more of a mental factor now or what. New England didn’t make the playoffs but were 11-5 last year, which would more then win the NFC West.

For the sake of this debate
Shouldn’t we focus on the league since 1999? The current decade is more relevant, especially since expansion happened in 1995 and realignment in 2002 which also caused more balanced schedules within divisions. The latter decade was dominated by one conference and only a few teams at that (SF, Dallas, GB).
It doesn’t mean that the next decade won’t be different but as it currently stands, SB losers struggle to have winning seasons and 8/10 have missed the playoffs. Injuries tend to be the biggest factor but I would also add that the current decade has seen so many last place/lower echelon teams suddenly rise up to make the SB, both winnners and losers (ATL, STL, NE, Carolina, AZ) that I wonder if having no previous record of success causes teams to be unprepared for having a season long target on their backs. Even the first time defending champ Pats in ‘02 went 9-7 and missed the playoffs. It’s much different being a defending league or conference champ with multiple night games, high fan expectations, media scrutiny and facing everyone’s best effort week in and out vs being an upstart nice story that can go unnoticed for half a season (and use the “no one believes in us” card).
I also imagine some teams have players that get too full of themselves with endorsements and interviews, thus focusing less on what it took to succeed and/or began wanting more money. It only takes the samllest of details to slip or improve for a team to see a 2-3 game difference in their record.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.

True
I understand your points and I’m sure a lot of those factors do affect first time successful teams after a Super Bowl loss. Another thing you want to remember is the positives. Gaining playoff and Super Bowl experience is a big step for a lot of players and as a team, it only helps as well. True that most teams can’t use the “no one believes in us” card, but if you haven’t noticed, most people still consider the Cardinals run a fluke and don’t give them enough credit. A lot of critics also publicily stated that the Cardinals won’t win the division, not because of the hangover curse, but because they believe the Seahawks will win it. I think a lot of players are still using the “no respect” card on the Cardinals, and that could have an affect on us this year.
Hey, hey, hey hey hey, watch the language, ok? I have a family.

Thx for the reply
And yes, the experience of having been there/done that is benficial. I think it shows itself more the year following the post-SB season, but is certainly a leg up that AZ has over every team in the division (even Seattle whose roster had turned over in key spots since their SB loss).

How good are the special teams for the cards and what should we expect for sunday?
Also, how many years do you honestly expect k. warner to perform at a high level..at some point he’s going to slow down..I remember a few years back when we beat the cards twice we were pressuring him into some pretty bad throws and ints…
What Warner do you think will we see sunday and why?
Finally, what do you think the outcome of the game will be: score?
by 11allstar on Sep 10, 2009 2:01 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
- The Cards special teams are probably one of the bigger question marks on this team, especially at the returner spots. Breaston will probably start the season as the primary punt and kick returner, if his knee is up to it. He’s a good punt returner but he’s below average as a kick returner. Ideally LaRod Stephens-Howling will take over as the kick returner sooner rather than later but I’d bet that Whiz plays it safe to start the season. As far as coverage units, I think we’ll be improved but nothing great. We were terrible last year covering kicks and it got so bad that they spent several games squibbing away from decent returners. Hopefully some of that is better this season but we honestly won’t know until the ball is in the air on Sunday.
- Who know’s about Warner? I think the Cards think he has one good year in him and then they’d like to see Matty boy take over. I will say though that Warner’s arm hasn’t lost a thing and he was never really a mobile QB anyways so I’m not sure his physical skills are diminishing. I’ve always thought that if you give KW three seconds or more in the pocket he’ll kill you but if you get pressure on him quickly, preferably off the edge, he can be rattled and when he’s rattled he’s a turnover machine. That being said, given the Niners lack of a premier pass rush, I think Warner will do just fine on Sunday.
- Prediction? Score? I think it’ll be a close game but the Cardinals win. History says that these two teams play each other very tight but I think the Cards are the more talented team and they’re at home. No other team in the NFC has posted a better record at home over the past two seasons than the Arizona Cardinals.

On your latter point
AZ deserves credit for developing a true home field with their new stadium, especaily after all those years in the worst NFL stadium. You also have to note that in that two year time frame SF won one and lost the other by their own doing at the one yard line. Home field between these two is not likely to be the factor.

Why do they have him on the field goal block team? I might understand if he’s back deep on a long FG to try and run it back but in that situation it doesn’t seem to make a ton of sense.

interesting
But maybe since he’s the most athletic playmaker they have they just wanted him in there.
Think about this: If he picks up the ball without getting cracked there’s a good chance he runs that thing in for a TD.

Here's a few questions.
1. What’s up with LT Mike Gandy? He was beaten badly, both inside and out, in the GB game. Is he losing it or what? In fact, the entire OL looked like they were having trouble all preseason – couldn’t open holes against opposing starters. What are the problems?
2. Can Beanie Wells block and pick up blitzers? Usually, this is the biggest problem with rookie RBs. And how’s his pass catching?
3. What in the world is up with the defense – it’s looked absolutely horrid in preseason? Even DRC showed a significant vulnerability to double-moves. And despite blitzing like crazy, they had almost zero pressure on Aaron Rogers and again against SD. I find this really puzzling because of the number of great players on your team (DRC, A. Rolle, A. Wilson, K. Dansby, etc.). Can you really attribute this to not game planning – they were simply making lots of gross mental errors from what I saw?
4. How do you rank the NFC West teams and how they will finish?
Thanks for stopping by – it’s good to talk to someone who follows the opposing team closely.,
by MontanaPass on Sep 12, 2009 11:10 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
1. Well actually, Gandy played pretty well all of last year, minus the Super Bowl. So far this preseason, he hasn’t looked the best, but the offense overall hasn’t either. I’m not sure what you mean about opening holes because Hightower averaged 4.6 YPC in the preseason, Wells averaged about 5.
2. From the whole 2 quarters of action I’ve seen of Beanie, I’d say he’s picked up some nice blitzes, but it’s too soon to tell. He said he doesn’t struggle receiving the ball, it’s because in college they rarely threw it to him.
3. The defense looked great in the first 2 preseason games, not allowing a touchdown. I don’t know if you mixed up your games because the starting D had 4 sacks on Phillip Rivers. Against the Packers, yes I can blame a lot of it on not game planning but also a lack emotion on the field. A lot of players expressed not gettting excited for the preseason.
4.Well if I’m going to rank them, a lot does have to go off of last year because it’s the most recent history we have, so I’d rank them…
1st – Arizona, they’re the NFC Champs for now
2nd – San Francisco, I really see them being a tough team this year
3rd – Seattle, They’ve already had injury problems and are changing to a new head coach
4th – St Louis, They haven’t done enough yet to win the NFC West
Cards – 10-6
49ers – 8-8
Seahawks- 7-9
Rams – 5-11

Just a couple questions from me right now...
1. What are you going to do when we beat you tomorrow? (Personally I suggest changing your name. Revenge of the birds will just look a little lame. “Revenge is mine..”)
2. Will any of your players have any secret weapons concealed on them? You know, like a small axe in case Shaun Hill sticks his neck out again…
3. Why on earth is your team called the Cardinals? Don’t birds generally fly away during the winter (football season)?
4. What do you think about nick-naming Wells “Fat Albert”?
5. Doesn’t Kurt Warner kind of stick out like a Model-T? I mean yeah it’s kinda cool for a while (old reliable and all), but every time I see one creaking along the road I get that little voice in my head saying “hit it! hit it!”.
6. Isn’t Arizona well known as being a state where the inhabitants leave when the going gets tough (moving to cooler climates in the summer)? (Kinda fits with number 3 doesn’t it?) Why should I think your football team is any different?
7. Why would your offensive coordinator want to leave his team right after going to a super bowl? Might it be that he doesn’t want his name associated with what your offense is going to look like this season?
8. I’ve heard some good things about your secondary, but what’s going to stop us from climbing all over them (ala Vernon Davis)?
9. If multiple players from your team can’t stop an undrafted journeyman QB minus his helmet from gaining a first down, what makes you think that you can stop Frank and Beans?
10. Larry Fitzgerald has Knargles living in his dreads right? I mean it’s not exactly hard to see. Will there be an investigation into whether this is what gives him his superior strength and speed? Perhaps it fits into the category of “illegal domestic breeding”?
