Bowl Games Gameday Thread (Part 2): January 1st, 2010
Now that the first three games for today are all finished, we have two rather big bowl games this evening in The Rose Bowl and The Allstate Sugar Bowl.
The Rose Bowl has for the most part always held exciting game and hopefully the same goes for today. Both team that will play against each other finished the season ranked and in 1st place in each of their respective conferences. The (10-2, 8-1) Oregon Ducks are currently ranked # 7 in the Nation and The (10-2, 7-1) Ohio State Buckeyes are ranked # 8 in the Nation.
The Allstate Sugar Bowl will be the final game of the day and also will feature two highly ranked teams. The Florida Gators are ranked # 5 in the nation while the Cincinnati Bearcats finished ranked # 3 overall in the Nation. The Gators finished with a (12-1, 8-0) record which placed them 1st in the SEC - East. The Bearcats finihed their season with a (12-0, 7-0) record which also placed them first in the Big East.
Below the jump we take a look at each team, their key-players, the coaches and coaching records, and other key information.

# 8 OHIO STATE BUCKEYES VS # 7 OREGON DUCKS

# 5 FLORIDA GATORS VS # 3 CINCINNATI BEARCATS
THE ROSE BOWL PREVIEW
I expect this to be a close hard fought game with high emotion and high stakes for each side. Both teams have pretty balanced offenses and defenses. So, I think this will come down to whoever wants it more. There will be a few prospects that will be playing on Sunday's next year coming out of this game and there seems to be more and more every year for each of these teams.

THE ALLSTATE SUGAR BOWL PREVIEW
With the current coaching situations for each team, I wouldn't expect anything less than high emotions and high energy for each side. This will be Tim Tebow's last game as a Gator and as much as I don't think of him as a true quarterback, I think he seems to find a way to will his team to victories. He will have his work cut out against a fierce and competitive natured Bearcat defense. There will be a bunch of prospects leaving their respective schools to go pro next year. This is one of those games that I would find it hard to bet on because it could go either way.
THE FLORIDA GATORS (Click here for teams website)
Key players to watch for the Gators:
Tim Tebow QB
Riley Cooper WR
Aaron Hernandez TE
Mike Pouncey G

Armon Binns WR
D.J. Woods WR

Oregon has run into a buzzsaw
they’re totally out of sync right now.
Yeah they need to hit a rythem on the next drive or it's gonna be a long day
Tim Tebow = 1,432,219 season tickets next year. Who wouldn't pick him in the 1st round with those projections?
it seems like it should be more than 10-0 though

the punch
He was wrong to punch the guy, but I really wish he would have slugged the fan who was talking smack as Blount was being led off. Definitely takes a big man to run over and yell at the guy when you’ve got cops and other people in between the two of them.

So Tebow's twin brother plays RT?
Let’s draft him!

Dunlap at OLB?
He plays DE in Florida’s 3-4 Defense.
Dude, you fail.

......
Failure to comprehend for you on this one….
In case you didn’t understand smileyman’s comment…
Florida plays primarily out of the 3-4.
The San Francisco 49ers play a pure 3-4 defense.
Carlos Dunlap plays DE in the 3-4.
Pass rushers in the 3-4 defense are usually the OLBs.
Once again, Carlos Dunlap plays DE in the 3-4.
If the 49ers were to draft Dunlap (lets all pray to God, Buddha and Zeus that doesn’t happen) he’ll play 3-4 DE.
What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

He's horrible in space
Have you ever seen him play?
He can’t play without his hand on the ground.

I love watching dirty games
it’s like watching bench clearing brawls
Yeah this is pretty bad. But. . .
I used to think this is a crazy idea, however, if the Niners have a chance to pick up Tebow at some point during the upcoming draft, I wouldn’t put it past them to do it. Reason being:
1) He’s been played a lot in the shotgun/spread so although it will be in a professional setting, he will have a familiarity with it should the Niners decide to keep it in their scheme.
2) He seems to have much less fear of running the ball than Alex Smith does, and if used as a “double-edged” attack with Gore, it could prove to be very effective, namely when running out of the shotgun.
3) Alex is in his contract year next season, so he will be under much scrutiny and will likely get the bulk of the playing time by default. This should get Tebow the time he needs to adapt to the NFL system, and if it came to it, take over and perform effectively in the Niners offensive scheme should they keep it similar to how it is now.
The drawback, it would be starting another project. However, it would be one that might fit in reasonably well.
To get Tebow NFL ready...
You’d have to do several things including:
- Have to teach him how the throw the ball properly without that massive wind-up.
- Have to teach him how to do progression reads as well as how to read defenses
- Have to teach him how to operate from out under center or even how to use a snap count.
the one thing he has going for him though
is that he is probably more determined than any player coming out. I think someone will make him a playmaker.

Tebow takes so long to get the ball out of his hand
He could start throwing immediately after touching the ball and still get sacked 15 times a game behind the current 9ers line.
Gimme 1 round!

Jeremiah Masoli actually studied in elementary in the Bay
The school was OLPH, in Daly City. I know this because:
- His sister was a good friend and classmate of mine
- My cousin was his former classmate in OLPH
- I’ve seen him in person
Im so proud :)
I read books to Darren Sproles in elementary
Doesn’t get me any of his contract though
True knowledge is knowing you know nothing!
#42
Really?
Florida is up like 40 points and some Gators are throwing some real dirty “blocks” out there.
That's Gata football for you.

Pike and Gilyard
I like Gilyard, his story, his determination, his speed, his return skills. He’ll be a later round pick I’m guessing right?
Pike did not have an impressive game though these bowl games have seemed to not help the QB’s playing in them who may enter the draft. I thought Snead might be a sleeper but he played very…not good in that game either.
Some of the games just didn’t favor the QB showing their skills…in others the QB made a lot of mistakes (Keenum comes to mind…). Overall I’d be curious to see who declares (in general, not just QB’s) after this bowl season.
