Playoff Prediction Games: Round 1 Results

There's nothing quite like playoff football prediction games hijinks. It's like they say: There's only ONE January*. The fans come out to see the best teams battle it out on the proverbial digital gridiron. The field is set, the predictions are in. Pride - and a snuggy - are on the line!

As the head to head matchups heat up week to week, everybody else has a chance to steal lightning in a bottle. The playoffs are a whole new beast, and that beast can't be hunted. It can be stalked, sure. It can even be tracked. You can shoot it if you want. It might even die. You could even bring it home with you and tell everybody that you hunted it. But you didn't. Just remember that. You didn't.

That's called an epic metaphor. Not "EPIC" in the Internet sense of the word. "Epic metaphor" is an actual literary term. Stupid Internet. I never had to make this distinction before you came around.

So here we are, battling it out on the Internet. Playing a game for a snuggy. At least, I assume that's why all of you are playing. That's why I'm playing. I love the Internet.

I'll get to the results, then.

Congratulations to everybody who scored, but especially to our top five and to me. The early leaders are bignerd and ZeroIndulgence, while several of our regular season leaders are struggling just to keep up. Despite worrying publicly about his scores, latecomer Rabbit T has grabbed a commanding position, tied for third with the always gritty gamer jtoj. Ten-Man and whobob are also both continuing their late season successes with early playoff runs. Good job everybody!

And also, lolgroug. He's tied with me. It's been well over a month since that's happened.

Right then. Let's get to the head to head matchups.

Now that's what we call a week of upsets! In three out of four games, the higher seed was upset by the challenger on their home field. First, number five seed PHUT! gets sweeped (swept, really) by Wild Card upstart YoungWillis. We always knew that YoungWillis would be in this matchup, but nobody could have predicted the pure dominance that he asserted on both sides of the ball. With the victory, he moves on to face our top seed, ro128487, and if I were ro I'd be watching my back.

Then our number nine seed bonbrillio marched into illini49er's house and showed him a thing or two about what it means to bring your C-game to the playoffs. Neither player really showed up to the game, and by the end the fans that already hadn't left were booing the product on the field. Was this a playoff game or an exhibition game? It was hard to tell if you were watching and even harder to tell based on the stat lines. In the end, bonbrillio turned out to want the loss less and came away with a victory. Next week's matchup against number four seed leaping_larry promises to bring stiffer competition, and hopefully bonbrillio will have taken the week to study film and practice hard, because the fans want to see a brawl.

Across the country, fans were treated to an absolute gem of a game in the Gold Conference Wild Card round as number 11 seed cassusriff made a trip to wjackalope Stadium to face our number six overall seed. On paper, this was wjackalope's game to lose, and in reality he did almost everything he needed to do to win. Unfortunately, cassusriff just brought it a little bit harder. Trading blows with the Jets and Ravens victories, this was the only matchup that came down to a raw score breakdown. With both players successfully predicting a Cowboys victory, the difference on Saturday proved to be cassusriff's somewhat better raw score of 14 for the game. The underdog once again came away with the win, and this time it was well deserved.

In the weekend's final matchup, number 10 seed DuikeBuike tried to make it a clean sweep for underdogs for the weekend against number seven seed LASVEGASNINER. But LASVEGASNINER jumped out to an early lead on Saturday, picking up two quick picks before DuikeBuike had a chance to make his adjustments. At halftime, DuikeBuike made the necessary changes and came marching back - only to come up just a little short! The underdogs wouldn't sweep the weekend, and LASVEGASNINER gets to look forward to a chance to take down the at-times indomitable groug. Will he be domitable a week from now? We'll find out next Monday!

That makes our updated bracket look like this:
