100 in 100: Navorro Bowman (4 of 100)

This is a new segment that Fooch wanted to incorporate for the offseason. The purpose of the new segment is to take an individual, in-depth look at some of the top college players in the Nation. From (January 12th) up until the day before the draft (April 21st), I will be writing articles on 100 different players in the next 100 days, hence the 100 in 100 title. The whole idea behind the 100 in 100 is to focus the conversation solely on the specific player that the particular articles will be covering. Deeper in to the article, I will cover the player's attributes, awards earned, honors earned, highlights (if available), and their NCAA college career stats.

Bowman has had some off field issues in getting with a scuffle with another student attending Penn State but since has turned it around. On the field and come gametime he is a menace. The Penn State middle linebacker leads the defense as a Junior and took on that role after the departure of teammate Aaron Maybin last year. The Nittany Lions landed a gem of a student athlete in Bowman. As a linebacker, Bowman see's the field like a free safety but hits like a defensive end. He is a very well-rounded player and I believe that he will make a big impact for any team that decides to draft him.

Below, as before, we will look at some more specifics regarding Bowman.

Star-divide

I went in a little different direction with this specific post. In this video, we get to see more a background of who Bowman is. There are some highlights mixed in but you really get a behind the scenes look at what Bowman is bringing to the table. Junior classman Navorro Bowman declared his intent to leave school early and enter the NFL Draft on January 4th, 2010.

SUMMARY AND PROJECTION:

Bowman has shown the ability to face adversity and persevere. In 2008, his father passed away and Bowman was considering quitting football all together. His family and teammates talked him in to staying and not giving up and he did. With all that has been said, Bowman may be a late first round to mid second round pick in the 2010 Draft. He is 6'1" 230.

Nice pick with the video. I can’t speak for everyone but I get bored after a while of watching highlights definitely not like a game.

Right ...

… beautifully put-together video. Hey – that tackle 4 mins 40 secs in. Patrick Willis-esque?

"This could be another Very Special Team" ... Superbowl winning Niners lineman Dan Audick ...

He has been a great player for PSU

and his presence will be missed on the field next year…that is definitely one thing that sucks about players leaving college early

Josh Hull, Sean Lee, Navorro Bowman... Oh My?!

Sorely missed next year, but hopefully the LB U lives up to its name

Nice catch here Drew

This kid has got great tackling technique. I love how he wraps up and makes sure he’s got the tackle before going for the big hit. He’s not looking to make a highlight reel every play unlike some players.

Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.

Do we really need a guy like this though?

Especially if he’s projected to go early. I don’t think he’s a top priority, unless they’re intent on getting an heir apparent to spikes.

by Mangoman on Jan 15, 2010 3:16 PM PST reply actions

I don't think...

… these 100 have to have anything to do with players the 49ers should draft. It’s just profiling 100 players, most of which people wouldn’t know much about, otherwise.

I think this guy profiles as a MLB (in a 4-3) or weakside ILB (in a 3-4). He needs serious “protection,” but could definitely be a playmaker if he lands in the right place. Basically, he plays P.Willis’ position, so yea, the 49ers don’t really need him (especially at a high pick).

By the way, Drew K

Bowman > Weatherspoon

Good for you

way to back that up….

Although the stats disagree with Bowman > Weatherspoon by a large margin:

Weatherspoon

Bowman

Tim Tebow = 1,432,219 season tickets next year. Who wouldn't pick him in the 1st round with those projections?

by Drew Kerr on Jan 15, 2010 4:06 PM PST up reply actions

I wouldn't say by a large margin...

Bowman only really played these last two years, and he missed 3 games due to injury this year, so he most likely would have had even better stats this year.

by sanfranfanmdk on Jan 15, 2010 4:25 PM PST up reply actions

That is a hypothetical and a guess. That fact is that Weatherspoon’s career and year-by-year stats are better and is a bit more versatile in what he can do.

Also if injury is the argument then put their 2008 stats side by side, that was Bowman’s best year and Weatherspoon is better in every category.

Bowman

In 2008 Sean Lee went down with an injury so Bowman actually had to play ILB. This year he played OLB. Navorro probably gets tackles stolen away by his future NFL LB-mates.

This may not matter to you, but there’s a reason why Bowman grades out as a 94 to scouts and why Weatherspoon grades out as an 86.

In no way am I saying they’re never wrong, but stats don’t tell you enough.

Eh, I don't know

It depends on what position they end up playing.
They aren’t really comparable IMO….

Witherspoon may end up playing in a 4-3 and Bowman in a 3-4.

What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

by SportsChicken on Jan 15, 2010 6:30 PM PST up reply actions

What position would he play?

I dunno, his background video didn’t tell me that much, everyone lives through a crises.

Middle Linebacker

I will probably go back to doing just the highlight vids since they give a more clear vision. I just wanted to try this to see what kind of response it received.
