San Francisco 49ers and Denver Broncos to square off in London - 10/31/10

Fooch's Note: Thanks to John for getting this posted.  Definitely something worth moving to the front page.

The NFL's International Series of regular-season games will return to the United Kingdom in 2010 with the San Francisco 49ers hosting the Denver Broncos, the NFL announced today.

The game will be played on Sunday, October 31 at Wembley Stadium in London at 1:00 p.m. ET (5:00 p.m. UK).  CBS will provide live television coverage in the United States.

The 49ers and Broncos are among the most decorated franchises in NFL history, combining for seven Super Bowl victories.

"For the past three years we have seen the extraordinary passion that exists for NFL football in the UK," said NFL Commissioner ROGER GOODELL.  "We want to continue to build on that passion by strengthening our ties to our existing UK fans and creating new ones."

The 49ers, five-time NFL champions, will take part in their second international regular-season game and first as the home team.  One of the world's most popular NFL franchises, San Francisco faced the Arizona Cardinals on October 2, 2005 in Mexico City in the first international regular-season game in league history, helping attract a crowd of 103,467 to Azteca Stadium.

"The 49ers organization is excited to be part of the NFL's 2010 international schedule," said 49ers President and CEO JED YORK.  "London is a wonderful venue for two of the most storied franchises in NFL history to square off.  The international games have been so well received that it will surely be an exciting experience for our players, coaches, staff and fans. We support the league's initiative to bring NFL games to the international stage, and look forward to playing in front of our fans in England."

The Broncos, two-time Super Bowl champions, played in seven international preseason American Bowl games, including in London in 1987.  They return to the UK to play against the team they faced in Super Bowl XXIV in 1990.

"The Denver Broncos are honored to play in London against the 49ers as part of the NFL's International Series," said Broncos President and CEO PAT BOWLEN.  "Our organization has been fortunate to play in several American Bowls in previous years, including one in London, but to play a regular-season game overseas is truly special.  It's a wonderful, historic opportunity for our franchise and will be an unforgettable experience for our players, coaches and fans.  I'm excited for the game in London and am thrilled that the Broncos will be part of the NFL's continued international growth."

The NFL is still looking into adding a 2nd game in London in 2010.

Additional 49ers quotations:

Mike Singletary

"I am thrilled about the chance to represent the NFL internationally.  I have no doubt that our players will be ready to go. What a great opportunity it is for us to play in such a setting."

Patrick Willis

"I’ve never been to London, but I’ve always wanted to go.  I couldn’t think of a better way to get to visit England than to go there doing something I love to do … playing football."

Vernon Davis

"I’m so excited. I’ve been waiting for this opportunity since they started playing games over in London.  I’ve always wanted to go overseas and now I get to go over with my teammates and play football. I can’t wait to go over there and show all of Europe what 49ers football is all about."

And pack your bags. At least the Niners are a much improved team over the squad that went to Mexico City in ’05. That was ugly on TV and in stadium had to be worse.

I’ve been thinking of heading to London for a week after I take the bar exam this summer. Maybe I’ll push that back to Halloween now.

How to answer that question?!

Massively, hugely excited, SpurredOn. Best. Thing. That. Has. Ever. Happened. I’m getting the drinks in and the first one is for you. What’ll you have SpurredOn? Fantastic that we’re the home team too as the stadium will be decked in red and gold and all the neutrals will be supporting SF. I can’t wait, and seriously, any fans that are thinking of coming over, feel free to use me as a source of advice over the next few months on where to stay and eat in London, and all that. Bring. It. On.

Depending on how the job situation looks for me, I might try and come over. Basically, if I don’t have a job, there’s a fairly good chance I’m in for it. I have some friends in London I’ve been meaning to visit, and this would certainly be a perfect excuse to go over.

into some sort of “official” NN Europe meeting? The London guys will be there, I will be there, and I’d bet the farm (if I had one) that tons of 9er fans from Germany and all over Europe will be there as well.

I’m gonna see if I can get tickets to this game and a few premier league matches as well. Can you say, “best sports/ travel week of all time”? Do the Niners have a sizeable following in the UK? I know that we have a lot of fans in some countries outside the U.S because of our history.

Yes - loads of Niners fans here ...

… (American) football’s popularity in the UK was at its zenith in the 1980s. Therefore the most popular teams here are those that were big in the 80s – Dolphins, Bears, Redskins and Niners are all major teams here. Broncos too actually, from the Elway era, so should be a great game. Wembley always sells out anyway, but SF will be the home team, and therefore they will deck the stadium out in our colours. It will be fantastic.

Ticket prices

I looked into prices for last year’s game as I was thinking of going. Found out that the cheapest tickets available were for £125.00 and that was just for a general admission ticket. They rose to approx £500.00 if you wanted a package deal with the ticket. They are pretty pricy cos it was a one-off game, this year it might be different if there are 2games here.
This equates to about what $250.00 for a ticket. Please correct me if I’m wrong on this.

slight disagreement

Wembley may well sell out now but I recall the “exhibition” games the NFL used to ship us.

I faithfully attended all of them and watched the crowds dwindle from a full house through to its final year when one end of the stadium was unusable due to setting up for a Madonna concert and seating was restricted to 40,000 and then that was not filled.

Why? Well I have a theory about that too …. :) I recall the year the 49ers came over and I’d already been a fan of theirs for 10yrs by then (started following in the 70’s) and I was thrilled at the chance to get to watch Joe Montanna and Jerry Rice play. Fat chance. They got wrapped up in cotton wool and stayed on the side lines.

Why would a fan want to pay the silly money wembley et al demand and then not get to see the big names play? It became a training match, not an exhibition.

Oh and don’t forget the Cowboys in your list of teams that were big in teh 80’s much as it galls me to say so :)

by SpurredOn on Jan 15, 2010 11:39 AM PST up reply actions

NO

NFL doesn’t care about West Coast teams or time change or it would kick back starting times for West Coast teams traveling to East Coast. This game is scheduled for 10am PST so again…screwing the West Coast teams in order to be in primetime on East Coast.

York has been complaining about the 10am start time, I wonder if he is pissed about it for a home game. LOL

by hudd07 on Jan 15, 2010 1:17 PM PST up reply actions

I would normally agree with you but Maiocco is reporting that the reason the Niners-Eagles game wasn’t considered is due to the time zone difference between the two. I hope that’s true, as it shows some intelligence and consideration in the NFL offices.

You gotta bring ass to get ass.

by SpurredOn on Jan 15, 2010 3:17 PM PST up reply actions

I read where he said that, maybe the NFL IS wising up?

I don’t think they will do anything though regarding games on East Coast though, because we are still playing 10 am pst so obviously Godell doesn’t think that’s a disadvantage for West Coast Teams.

I also know it’s 5pm UK, so maybe it’s more to be in their prime time viewing.

Season ticket-holders

Obviously no official news is out on how it will impact you. As far as those who want to go to the game, the 49ers will likely have to work with the league on ticket allotments. At the very least right now, I’d recommend letting your season ticket rep with the team know you’re interested. That way, if it works that you’ll get some kind of priority, they’ll know to call you.

by David Fucillo on Jan 15, 2010 12:01 PM PST reply actions

I'm not a season ticket holder,

but what does this mean as far as the built in price of seats before the season begins? Would the 49ers prorate the price of tickets for only 9 (7 reg season + 2 preseason) games rather than 10? Something tells me the season ticket holders will still be paying the same price they would for 10 games.

It would be a shame considering those are some of the fans making the greatest financial investments year after year, just for the sake of expanding the reputation/ passion (whatever word Goodell used) of the NFL in Europe.

9 games

Let’s just say I’ve been hearing that would not be the case. I’d expect you’d be charged for 9 games instead of 10. Maiocco tweeted this:

NFL ensures London game is “revenue neutral” for 49ers. Team will be reimbused average of seven other home games, according to league.

So they would seemingly not need to charge fans for the non-existent 10th home game.

home games

One issue that was brought up somewhere is that the NFL doesn’t want teams with new stadiums losing true home games (since they need the money to pay off their debt). The Broncos stadium isn’t brand new, but I’d imagine it’s new enough that it was easy to take the game from the 49ers.

And if, as LondonNiner said below, it’s going to go over 16 years, the new stadiums won’t be quite so new in a decade. So maybe you see the NY teams or Dallas getting a London game 6 or 7 years from now.

by David Fucillo on Jan 15, 2010 1:50 PM PST up reply actions

Maybe not just London ...

… I’d be intrigued to know where else they want to take these games. It surely can’t just be London. I’m biased, because I live there, but if this is a true expansion policy, it wouldn’t make any sense to just be London. I’m not talking about Edinburgh and Cardiff – the capital cities of the two other Great Britain nations aside from England – but you’d have to imagine Tokyo? Berlin? Barcelona? The latter two had teams in the European league. Dubai and South Africa seem very hot sporting centres right now – both have held or are holding major sporting events.

Sportsillustrated mentioned that the NFL was considering Manchester and Glasgow as the site for a second game. Of course, that’s just at the moment. I’d be interested to see where outside the UK they’d expand to in the future.

Manchester means Old Trafford ...

… (as I’m sure you well know, Useful!) or it could be the City of Manchester Stadium (home to your great rivals, City) but I think that’s unlikely. I think if they go away from London they will go outside England. Glasgow means Hampden, probably, unless they go to Celtic Park or Ibrox. Edinburgh is much more likely, imo, if they go to Scotland.

I wish I knew which cities in Great Britain had the largest NFL fan bases. Millennium Stadium would seem to be a nice venue. I can’t see Edinburgh hosting a game only because the stadiums don’t seat more than 20,000 people or so (at least, I think).

Murrayfield (Edinburgh) is by far the most likely Scottish venue, on the grounds of size (~70k).

I can’t see them having a game in a 50k stadium, purely for revenue reasons. So that means Old Trafford, Murrayfield, Millennium Stadium or Wembley again.

I’m shocked Germany never gets mentioned, after it single handedly propped up NFL Europe for a decade.

I’m also slightly surprised at the lack of a backlash from the natives. Over here, the suggestion was made that there should be an additional game added to the EPL (i.e. soccer) season, which would be played overseas, and there was FURY. If I lived less than 8000 miles nearer to Wembley than I do to Candlestick, I would be fuming. But I don’t, so….woooohooo!

Oh, I’d never heard of Murrayfield.

Normally I’d support the idea of holding an EPL game in the US, but chances are it would be played on the east coast so I still wouldn’t get to go.

Murrayfield is the home of Scottish rugby ...

… sarf_london_niner (great name mate – I might start calling myself north_london_niner!) is right – if they go to Scotland, it’ll be Edinburgh not Glasgow. As for the Premier League going to the US, you’re right, Useful, it would most likely be New York, but Beckham’s presence in LA could potentially swing it to California.

Travel

Maiocco reported that the Niners are likely to have a road game the preceding week to lessen the travel, as the team can go straight to London. Here’s to hoping that it happens and the game is either in Carolina or Atlanta. Get that trip out of the way and the trip from those cities to London is no different that SF to NY.

You gotta bring ass to get ass.

Yep

If my calendar math is correct that means the London game is week 9. The Niners then have a bye and finish with the final seven. A bye at midseason is the best time to have it; certainly better than too early in the year. Set up for the stretch run.

You gotta bring ass to get ass.

England Game!

The 9ers could be in for some trouble if the 2008 chargers tell us anything. The travel can kill teams!

…we need to do some organizing for this game. The Pats’ UK fanclub had a huge party last year with Bob Kraft and the mascot turning up; no reason we can’t do the same.

Well, except the Niners don’t have a fanclub. But now’s the time!

Good idea!

Count me in on anything that is organised.

Me: “The London game?”

Him: “Road trip?”

Late to the news

Trust moving house to make me late to this news.

Surprised by the positive response from many despite losing a home game, am really excited to be getting to see the niners in london and will be around for the weekend, the girlfriend lives in London.

Ninerfromacrossthepond my brother lives in Taunton btw so I go down there all the time, live in Leamington myself.

Count me in for any pre-game party, where I shall be toasting the chance to see the team I love and a few consoling drinks for all those true niners fans missing a proper home game, to you my apologies but I hope a few can make it over.

so I wonder if there are this many Londoners over on the Broncos blog

or any other SB Nation blog for that matter. I’ve seen a ton of bloggers from all over the world here, more then I have seen on other SB Nation sites I visit. Are there any official numbers on something like that?

Fooch did a map back in the summer (I think it was) ...

… but a lot of the UK guys posting here appear to have joined since then. I reckon we’ll be in the majority soon, Lou ;)

Pretty cool

To see all these UK niner fans in here now. It’s going to be great to see that game. Hope niners have a great FA and draft so we can go into the October 31 game with a commanding lead in the west.
