Kurt Schottenheimer named 49ers Special Teams Coordinator
Fooch's Note: I just got the press release on this, but there's a link below.
“I am very thankful that we were able to add Kurt to our coaching staff,” said head coach Mike Singletary. “He brings with him invaluable experience from more than 30 years of service in the NFL and college coaching ranks. Kurt has a diverse background and a tremendous knowledge of personnel, both of which will serve the 49ers well in producing a top-notch special teams unit.”
There's absolutely nowhere to go but up for this unit. I can't really judge much about the coach himself but its hard to imagine him doing any worse than where we were last season unless he gets rid of Andy Lee.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

Mine was up first and has a completely different tone.
Huh.

Just emailed you. I didn’t notice yours until after moving this one up.
As far as the reaction, I can’t call it an upgrade OR a downgrade at this point because I just don’t know enough at this point. Kurt hasn’t been an ST coordinator for some time, which would seem to be a negative. But I just don’t know at this point.

Yeah, I got it. No problem.
I just think Everest is a proven commodity who slipped up a bit.

ST Coordinators
I don’t know. ST Coordinators often seem to come and go with the wind at times.

I'll laugh at all of you when we average 4.3 next year on PR.
I’ll do said laughing while crying into my laptop.

I said it before

:P Fooch showing his spite for all my clowning, promoting this one!
Seriously though I absolutely hate this move. Nobody clamors for Kurt Schottenheimer. This is a gigantic leap backward from Al Everest.

i agree
now is not the time to “try” something that hasn’t been proven. We’ve got enough problems in this area.

We seem to have a penchant for coaches..
Who have been in the league for 30+ years and still have proven nothing.

there was a time
and stillis to some point that the rest of the league could be intertwined with the coaching of bill walsh. ah, the good ol’ days

Lets said
Greg Manusky becomes a HC for another team (like the Cowboys)
How old will the next hire be?
Who are these new authors on NN?
what do you mean by not proven? He was a successful ST coach when he was one!!

"The Football The 49ers Team has The excitement of the bear, the velocity of the deer and strenght of the buffalo.
I wanna disagree, but
I feel tremendous backlash if I say why.
Not to mention
I wasn’t gonna be serious, anyways.
I'll see what he brings to the table.
Given the players we have, doubt he’ll make any improvement.
punt return
Given how awful the punt return unit was, that can only improve. But I think that has as much or more to do with the personnel that might be brought in as opposed to the coach.
by David Fucillo on Jan 18, 2010 1:09 PM PST up reply actions
Exactly.
So why bother replacing the coach in the first place?
"It came down like a punt, Coach!" - Josh Morgan
who knows
I’m honestly mostly indifferent to the special teams coach position. The coach obviously provides some insight, but I think it comes down to the talent you have back there.
by David Fucillo on Jan 18, 2010 1:23 PM PST up reply actions
talent...exactly,
& if Cleveland is crazy enough to trade Cribbs to us…our special teams would be spectacular. Don’t see that happening though.
because we want winners?

Everest vs. Shottenheimer ???????? I'm on board but...
Maybe I should’ve put my application in?
To the Special Teams:
“Hey, run down there and tackle the guy” …or… “Catch the ball and run it back for a TD…remember to block for him guys”. “Stay in your lanes on the kickoff”….and “Make sure you wrap up”.
See, I can do it as good as the next guy.
Tim Tebow = 1,432,219 season tickets next year. Who wouldn't pick him in the 1st round with those projections?
"now we're gonna
run a reverse"
yeah i get it.

Drew K gets my vote too!
"Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, either way, YOU'RE RIGHT !"
ST seems to be more about the players
Since they get replaced quicker than the other two coordinators. But the performance of their units, outside of the rare guy such as April, is really about the quality of return man, kickers, and athletic backup players. Niners have the kickers. They need the return man. And the rest remains to be seen with the loss of Ulbrich though Robinson remains is place.
Unless Schottenheimer is a awful, which is unlikely, the unit will improve with a better return man and blocking schemes which were both awful under Everest in ’09. Drafting a reserve DB and LB with speed would also help the ST unit.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
ESPN reported it too.

And Clayton just said on television that Mike Nolan was fired by Denver.
yep
Just posted a FanShot on the front page about Nolan.

Some might not like the hire but . . .
I have a bit of insight into special team coaches. The position isn’t so much knowing X’s and O’s as it is making your players really believe your plan is going to work. It’s a position for motivational coaches which is where Marty Schottenheimer and Bill Cowher made their starts.
Thanks for some insight, the clouds of negativity have some sunshime to run from.
Tribute to #44...............The Elmira Express!!
In all honestly when talking about kick and punt return plays the X’s and O’s drawn up get flushed away within 1 second of action. Ya, you can diagram a return on a chalk board expecting the defenders to be in a certain position but they never are.
Really good X’s and O’s special coaches can identify that one player who has tendency to miss his assignment and guess how he might miss the assignment on a certain play but it’s still mostly convincing the returner that all the needed blocks will be made and the blockers if they block will do so at the right angle to spring the return.
Now blocking assignments on field goal tries and punts are strictly teaching your players X’s and O’s.
Oddly enough
Bellichick got his start there too
by ChesapeakeBay9er on Jan 18, 2010 8:51 PM PST up reply actions
Well if you think about ST coach is mostly coaching the non-starters. Just on the surface it sounds like an entry level position.
Yep agreed what I was noting
Is that based on the statement of an ST Coach needing to be motivational, Bellichick doesn’t come across to a lot of people as “motivational”

Why is everyone harping on his age?
He just barely turned 60. Singletary’s only like 8 years younger than Shottenheimer. There are A LOT of coaches in that particular age bracket.
Here’s his resume for anyone interested (also not understanding why there has been mention of him being out of football for a while when he was just recently with the Packers):
Team(s) as a coach/administrator
1974
2010-present William Paterson University
(Defensive Coordinator)
1978-1982

1989-1994

The versatility leads me to believe that he’d be a pretty useful guy to have around.
Tim Tebow = 1,432,219 season tickets next year. Who wouldn't pick him in the 1st round with those projections?
haha… good call. He went to Pittsburgh. He didn’t stay unemployed for long…. neither did Nolan. Dolphins picked him up today.

From what I understand Nolan had an interview scheduled with the Dolphins
before he and McDaniels parted ways.
Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.
Certainly doesn’t look well for McDaniels on the surface. Nobody is going to want to go there to play

I know. He's running everybody in the old regime out
My in-laws are all huge Broncos fans and they can’t stand McDaniels.
