Niners Nation Community Mock Draft Q & A

I just wanted to put this post up for those who signed up to participate in our annual community mock draft. I sent out an email to you explaining some of how the process was going to take place. I am now going to dive in to the specifics. I will try and make everything as clear as I can for everyone to avoid a bundle of potential questions as the draft is going on. Fooch had previously mentioned that depending on how smoothly this runs, that there would be future community mocks before the beginning of the 2010 Draft. I want to make the process as speedy and efficient as possible. I know some of you will only have the time alloted for yourselves that was previously mentioned. The draft will be 2 rounds to begin with. If the process goes quicker than anticipated, I may consider throwing in another round if you all decide you'd like to continue. But it will be up to you all.

Here now is the process...

DRAFT METHOD:

1. I will announce which team is on the clock with the following comment: THE ST. LOUIS RAMS ARE NOW ON THE CLOCK!! ...After this message, you will have 5 minutes from the time stamp on the comment to make your selection.

2. Your selection MUST appear exactly as this in the subject line only: WITH THE 33RD PICK IN THE DRAFT, THE ST. LOUIS RAMS SELECT (PLAYER NAME) -- (POSITION) -- SCHOOL. Please use all caps so your pick will stand out.

3. After your selection, the next person will be on the clock immediately after I make the announcement.

4. After your selection is made, it will be preffered that you give an explanation of why you made the specific selection; this can be done by hitting the [reply+] button on your pick comment. PLEASE DO NOT USE THE SUBJECT LINE FOR ANYTHING OTHER THAN PICKS. This way, the only thing that will appear in bold is the announcements and the picks.

5. It will help in following the conversation on each pick alot easier. And most importantly of all, when we put together the front page article, it will be easiest to sort through.

So it is a pretty simple process that should be pretty easy for everyone to follow. I am going to repost the rules at the top of the community draft post that will be going up in a couple of hours. If everyone follows the process accordingly, then it should go by pretty quick.

IF YOU HAVE QUESITONS DURING THE DRAFT, PLEASE, PLEASE DO NOT ASK THEM IN THE LIVE MOCK DRAFT THREAD. CONSIDER THIS YOUR OFFICIAL "HELP" THREAD. I WILL CHECK IT IN BETWEEN EVERY PICK. THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR COOPERATION IN ADVANCE.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

Since you have the Panthers and only 1 pick in the 2nd round I will make this one exception. If you’d like to draft for both, that’s be fine too.

question,

will the discussion about the pick be underneath the pick as a reply or as a separate comment?

by thewhizkid on Jan 23, 2010 10:57 AM PST reply actions

Seperate comment. It will put the next person on the clock faster. Does that make sense?

by Drew Kerr on Jan 23, 2010 10:58 AM PST up reply actions

correction

It’s a reply to your comment. So you’ll post your pick quickly so the next person can go. Then, when you go to add your discussion, post it as a direct reply to your pick, ok?

I'll do a sample post here so you can get an idea.

You're supposed to use caps

He was 5-15 with the Oakland Raiders and got fired before his second season was over. He went 7-6 in his one year at Tennessee in a season when the SEC wasn't terribly good. He lost at home to UCLA; the Bruins only road win in the Pac-10 came at Washington State.

It’s hard to predict who is going to show and who isn’t. And there is only 5 minutes to pick. Depending on who doesn’t show in the 1st round, I may assign you a teams 2nd round pick if I have to pick for them in the 1st.

Just come to this thread during the draft to request a team if I have to make a 1st round pick for someone.

Depends on how smoothly it goes. If it goes smoothly and fairly quick, we could potentially keep going for a 3rd. But I will leave that up to everyone at the end.

Yeah

but there’s a coin flip for the pick, so I was just wondering

He was 5-15 with the Oakland Raiders and got fired before his second season was over. He went 7-6 in his one year at Tennessee in a season when the SEC wasn't terribly good. He lost at home to UCLA; the Bruins only road win in the Pac-10 came at Washington State.

Why Spiller? Honestly, I really don’t see why we couldn’t just draft a kick returner, preferably Syd-Quan Thompson or Marty Gilyard, and spend the other 1st rounder on a offensive lineman or safety.

by Drew Kerr on Jan 23, 2010 12:00 PM PST reply actions

Hey Drew

if a player doesn’t pick for his team does it follow NFL rules? A team can not choose someone at their spot and then jump in at a later spot if they want to.

So let’s say the Bucs dont’ pick at #3, they can jump in whenever they feel like it down the road.

Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.

by smileyman on Jan 23, 2010 12:11 PM PST reply actions

wait teams can do that?

that seems like an interesting way to save money, they can wait until they feel the player they want is worth the pick theoretically right?

by thewhizkid on Jan 23, 2010 12:13 PM PST up reply actions

Yup

that way if they can’t get a draft trade they can get a lower pick.

I don’t think it happens very often but it is an option.

Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.

by smileyman on Jan 23, 2010 12:16 PM PST up reply actions

not really….the players union would throw a fit about rigging the draft if teams did that. Consider the salary implications if it were proven that the team waited and still go the player that wanted, just at a lower price

by HaloFanInDC on Jan 23, 2010 12:18 PM PST up reply actions

It's in the rules though

so a team could do it if they wanted to.

Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.

by smileyman on Jan 23, 2010 12:19 PM PST up reply actions

well my understanding is the rules work in a way that allow it, but it’s never really come up as an issue as everyone knows what a shitstorm it create

by HaloFanInDC on Jan 23, 2010 12:21 PM PST up reply actions

that seems crazy. no reason to do it though, I mean, if you have #1, you want fair value for it, or you are going to pick it.

by hudd07 on Jan 23, 2010 12:22 PM PST up reply actions

if you don’t want to pay #1 overall money and the player you’re wanting is lower down i could see why a team would want to.

Especially if they can’t get a trade partner to move down.

Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.

by smileyman on Jan 23, 2010 12:23 PM PST up reply actions

yeah i guess, just think RARE that there isn’t’ SOMEONE you want at #1. Even if you want Spiller at 10 for instance, you would still take SOMEONE at #1, such as Suh. We didn’t want #1 pick, but still took someone.

by hudd07 on Jan 23, 2010 12:47 PM PST up reply actions

im guessing

it would really piss off the other GMs though, seeing as they have to always wonder when that team will jump back in

by thewhizkid on Jan 23, 2010 12:18 PM PST up reply actions

are you going to give warnings about time

so something like….you have one minute left to pick

and what happens if the times runs out? Do we do regular NFL rules that the other team and just jump in and take the pick?

by HaloFanInDC on Jan 23, 2010 12:15 PM PST reply actions

No warnings
