Around SBN: In Crunch Time, Spurs Don't Change Their Game

Fox Broadcasting of NFC Championship Game?  FAIL.

Fooch's Note: Given the many questionable issues related to yesterday's game, I thought this was worth moving to the front page.  I've moved part of this to after the jump.

There were plenty of questionable (at best) calls from the refs on Sunday, but the real finger should be pointed in the direction of Fox.  No, not because of the calls or the way the game played out, but because of lack of general presentation.  The first thing I'd like to gripe about: lack of stat overlays.  Sure, Fox showed how many times the QBs were getting pressured and how many hits each had to endure, but overall I felt the stats were lacking.  Very seldom did the viewers have the information of third down conversion rates or key stats during drives.

For example, Minnesota's opening drive of the second half.  The Vikings marched down the field 80 yards to score a game tying touchdown.  While Joe Buck was busy drooling over the immortal Brett Favre after (and during) the drive, a stat was seriously overlooked.  Visanthe Shiancoe has 3 catches for 67 yards on the drive, better than 75% of the team's success on the drive.  As the Vikings punched the ball in for six, I awaited the stat overlay for drive summary.  Nothing.  I was waiting for Joe Buck or Troy Aikman to credit Shiancoe with the big catches during the drive.  Nothing.  No stats regarding the drive, no stats regarding Shiancoe's production.  Why not?

Another example came during the Vikings final drive before the first half ended.  With 1:13 left, Adrian Peterson ran for six yard gain, and a timeout was called.  At this point, I was yelling at the TV, screaming for the Vikings to get back to the line and run another play down New Orleans' throat, but instead a timeout was taken, but by which team?  Fox's broadcast did not display which team had called for the timeout, nor did either announcer mention which team took the timeout.  Minnesota had no reason in the world to take a timeout inside their opponent's red zone with time dwindling away in the half.  New Orleans had every reason to, saving time and perhaps a chance to match whatever points the Vikings could put on the board.  Who called the time out?  Fox didn't let us know.  I wasn't sure if I should rip Minnesota for such a stupid timeout, or New Orleans for haulting whatever momentum the Vikings were about to get.

Star-divide

To give Fox some credit, they did display the time of possession numbers for each team, but I honestly don't remember seeing either team's third down conversion percentages at all yesterday.  Again, we were treated to the pressure numbers, and the amount of penalties, but I seriously feel Fox overlooked the more intricate numbers of the game.  The Vikings held the Saints to 3 of 12 on third down conversions, yet it seemed Buck and Aikman both overlooked just how well the Minnesota defense was keeping the team in the game.  Were we ever reminded that Saints had converted just one third down in the second half?  No.  Again, the Vikings defense was dominant on third down, yet the story of the day was either time of possession or Brett Favre gala.

In closing, I'd just like to say that Fox really needs to revamp their production team next fall.  I want to see important stats throughout the game, not obvious ones.  Yes, it was obvious that the Vikings were dominating Time of Possession.  Why?  Well, because the team had 5 turnovers and still managed to take the game to OT.  They didn't take the game to OT because of TOP, they took it to OT because of excellent third down defense.  Maybe I'm way off here, or maybe I wasn't paying close enough attention to the stat displays, but I felt Fox really dropped the ball in production value and presentation.

Quick Edit - I forgot also to mention the Saints 4th down conversion in OT.  Fox decided to replay us the same angle over and over on Pierre Thomas' apparent attempt coming short.  We were treated to Chad Greenway's helmet jarring the ball loose, appearing to force the ball back behind the first down marker.  We could only see the sticks on the far sideline, so it did appear short.  Fox showed one other angle, before the game went to commercial, that displayed a proper angle of both first down markers, showing that even with the fumble, Thomas made it past the marker.  When we returned from break, all we saw was the same angle making it look like Thomas had come up short.  Why?

let's face it

Fox sucks. We’ve known this for a long time. And every big game they show there’s more and more evidence of it. The announcers are terrible. They don’t show the right stats. They pick bad replays or don’t show enough of them. They are in love with closeups and crowd shots. They take attention away from the game. They kill puppies. Whatever it is, we all know they suck. But is there anything we can do about it? At least they don’t have the super bowl this year.

A hearty thank you to Rich Aurilia for all the good memories, and to the Niners for finally getting the uni's (mostly) right.

Sadly the announcing bit

is a curse for all the networks. NFLN’s announcers suck. They at least have better stats, but their camera angles and cuts are funky. I like the ESPN MNF crew but sometimes they get too full of themselves and talk just to hear themselves talk. At least Gruden and Jaws both get excited about whatever game they’re waching and act like they actually care about football.

The Sunday Night Football announcing crew of Collinsworth and MIchaels is one of the best even if Collinsworth screws up on the rules half the time. I’d say that NBC’s announcing crews are the best. Fox has the worst announcing teams.

The radio announcers for most teams are sooo much better than the tv announcers it’s pathetic. Pay attention to the highlight reels they run on NFLN—most of the time the voiceover you here is that team’s radio announcer, not the tv announcer.

Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.

I was actually pleasantly surprised as to how well Collinsworth did in replacing John Madden this year. I’ve never been a Collinsworth fan, but I thought he did a good job of letting Michaels carry the action, and to only chime in when it was somewhat relevant to do so. We’ll see if this continues, but NBC is far and away the best announcing crew in football right now.

Sometimes the impossible can become possible if you're AWESOME!

NBC is good

but I thought the CBS crew yesterday was fine as well.

CBS > Fox

By far. More depth throughout the network. I think the MNF crew on ESPN would be better if Tirico were in studio and they had a play by play man with a deeper voice who didn’t talk so much. Maybe Nessler could do MNF.

You gotta bring ass to get ass.

I don't like Tirico much either

I mean, he’s better than Joe Buck, but I always like Mike Patrick a lot more.

Joe Buck

in all honesty he encapsulates Fox’s announcing philosophy and is exactly why I detest the broadcasting
.

Here's hoping 2010 is the end of our drought.

Buck sucks

The one call that stood out for me was the roughing the passer call against NO, I think it was early in the fourth quarter. Aikman made his comment about it being a bad call (which it clearly was!) and I don’t know if it was to add drama to the situation or what, but Buck had to disagree with him. If Buck didn’t think that was roughing the passer, he obvoiously hadn’t had enough to drink.

by Mangoman on Jan 25, 2010 11:38 AM PST reply actions

Correction

If he DID think it was roughing the passer. . .my bad.

Buck's got major man-love for Favre

which is why he disagreed with Aikman

Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.

by smileyman on Jan 25, 2010 12:42 PM PST up reply actions

I'm not surprised FOX was terrible...

A few reasons. First, Joe Buck is awful. He has become FOX’s go to guy for all sports, and its just unbearable. He either has to talk up the same superstars everyone always talks up (the Favre love was bordering on sexually inappropriate yesterday…did FOX hire John Madden to inspire Buck for the game or something?), or listen to himself talk about something completely unrelated to the action on the field. He’s just not very good.

Second, with Favre in the game, you knew things would be bad. But that would have been a problem, no matter who was calling the game.

Sometimes the impossible can become possible if you're AWESOME!

by ZeroIndulgence on Jan 25, 2010 11:43 AM PST reply actions

No kidding

Even my wife (who frequently doesn’t even hear the announcers, she’s capable of tuning them out, lucky girl) noticed the oddly sexual Farve love from Buck. She asked who the announcer was and once I told her he was the guy who did the World Series. Her response was not site appropriate, but probably the most enjoyment I got from anything related to Buck during the game.

by Deelron on Jan 26, 2010 6:26 PM PST up reply actions

All true

I’d add that, they should have immediately been questioning why Childress went conservative upon reaching the 30yd line on their final drive. You’ve got a vet QB and defense on their heels yet you turn to your running game for a 47yd FG? Or how about the bad timeout Payton called after the second play of that drive? He risked that if Minnesota got a first down (they did) he was helping their drive (he did). Fortunately, Favre’s mistake bailed him out.

I agree that the 3rd down conversion stats were lacking in the 2nd half. Part of the reason the Saints had so little yardage was that they were never on the field. How might that impact their defense wearing down? Or take away any chance at rhythm for their offense? No mentions.

Finally, did anyone else think that had Porter stayed outside on his INT return, he would’ve gone up the sideline and scored? What an ending that would’ve been.

You gotta bring ass to get ass.

There's something about the colors on FOX

honestly, I infinitely prefer watching games on FOX because I just think it looks better and less washed out.

I usually yell at commentators regardless so that’s whatever.

but F- FOX in general, yeah, I’m totally behind that!

NFL commentatiors

It is sad that Joe Buck and Aikman are the the best that fox can offer. I would rather turn the TV volume off and listen to it on radio, however the radio signal comes in about seven seconds faster than the TV, and drives me crazy. On those weeks that the game isn’t the feature game of the week and we get one of the 12 o’clock scrubs God help us. My suggestion is buy the NFL music sound track and listen to that and watch the game it will make your viewing experience much more enjoyable.

by SupaFan on Jan 25, 2010 12:18 PM PST reply actions

get one of these and you can delay the radio signal to match the TV. I use it for baseball so I don’t have to listen to Buck butcher the playoffs. last time I tried to use it for football the tv was like 20 seconds behind the radio, and it can only delay up to 8 seconds, so it didn’t work.

A hearty thank you to Rich Aurilia for all the good memories, and to the Niners for finally getting the uni's (mostly) right.

Also

I hate the way Fox does the starting line-ups. They go by so fast, they are half over before I even pay attention. I much prefer the way they do it on SNF and MNF.

It shocks me every year that goes by that Gus Johnson hasn’t gotten a push since he’s got a huge following.

As far as Joe Buck is concerned, Brett Favre threw and caught every pass, and ran every rushing play. He sees his own game.

He’s the worst.

I don’t like Joe Buck because he could cover the Earth exploding still make me fall asleep. However he is no where near the worst as far as player bottom washing. Anyone notice Jim Nantz staring 2 Peyton Manning commercials? When did Nantzy write Tom Brady a Dear John letter?

Buck’s over reaction to Randy Moss was classic. You never know what is going to push someone’s button.

Everything about Fox is an abortion. But then again the network caters to the lowest common denominator of people in this country.

If we sacrifice Joe Buck, can we bring his dad back to life?

yeah

the real problem with Fox is their sports. The network programming is fine – or at least it has or has had its bright spots. The real problem is the sports. We won’t even talk about Fox News.

You know what?

I’ve been watching a lot of the Australian Open Tennis on ESPN2, and the coverage has been tremendous. They even have a graphic that shows a player’s movement around a court. It’s really enlightening.

Of course, then they went and offered Justine Henin some vegemite on toast. Her reaction was priceless.

I suspect that you think tilting at windmills means something other than what it does.

I don't mean to be an ass...

but do people really still watch football without an internet-ready computer nearby and available? NFL.com, Yahoo, ESPN.com and just about everyone else will provide you with live stat-tracking that can tell you all you want to know about possessions, game stats, clock stoppages, etc. I’m not trying to excuse FOX for mismanaging these things, but you have to remember that their primary job is to make the game look pretty and provide you with talking heads.

not always

There are times people are at a friend’s place kicking back with a beer and no computer. Especially for something like the playoffs. Or if you’re at a bar and wanting some of that info?

by David Fucillo on Jan 27, 2010 10:04 PM PST up reply actions

For example, I get one 49ers game a year at home at best and this year it got snowed back to 3pm…so when I’m at a bar, I don’t take my computer. The good news, though, since we haven’t been great for a few years…our games have been on mute even at the bar.

I hate being on the computer when watching 49er games though...

That’s why I usually don’t participate in the 49ers game threads.
And if I do it’s from my phone.

What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

by SportsChicken on Jan 27, 2010 11:36 PM PST up reply actions

I hear you

but when I’m at a friend’s house watching the game, I don’t pardon myself to go check stats on the computer. In a playoff atmosphere, it’s about watching the game with a group of pals. When Fox barely makes the game look pretty (anything looks good in HD, so I can’t give Fox credit here) and provides me with talking heads that stink, the rest of the broadcast’s flaws are glaring.

Besides, the 49ers missed the playoffs, what else do I have to complain about? May as well take it out on Fox, the easiest target in sports.

and will like it even more when CONAN O’BRIEN starts there in september

but friggin joe buck… jesus does he ever show ANY EMOTION about ANYTHING?
