49ers DE Justin Smith named to 2010 Pro Bowl

Thanks to smileyman for posting a FanShot on this, but I figured I'd post the official release here.  The 49ers announced that DE Justin Smith was named to the 2010 Pro Bowl as a replacement for Minnesota DT Kevin Williams.  It is actually Smith's first Pro Bowl appearance.  Congratulations are definitely in order for Justin!

The 49ers will now have five representatives playing in the game - RB Frank Gore, TE Vernon Davis, LB Patrick Willis and P Andy Lee - marking the highest San Francisco delegation since the team sent six players following the 2002 season. In the past 60 years, the 49ers have sent five-or-more representatives to the Pro Bowl 34 times.

"This is a great opportunity for me to represent my team in Miami ... it's been a long time coming," said Smith. "To be able to go there and play with four of my teammates makes it even better."

Smith started all 16 games for the 49ers in 2009 and ranked second on the team with six sacks. He led all 49ers defensive linemen in tackles (90), quarterback pressures (78) and quarterback hits (52), while adding two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.

Smith has now recorded at least five sacks in eight of his nine NFL seasons. A relentless and explosive defender, Smith heads into the 2010 season with a current active streak of 139 consecutive starts, which is by far the longest streak of any current NFL defensive lineman (Arz. DT Darnell Dockett is 2nd with 81).

Yes, but

Is it really much of an honor this year given how many of those voted in aren’t playing? It’s got to be a record. NONE of the AFC QBs that were voted in are gonna play and two of the NFC QBs aren’t gonna play. Might as well put Jamarcus Russell into the Pro Bowl the way it’s going.

Trust me. Making this year’s pro bowl is NOT an accomplishment.

Dude, for Justin it is

The man has busted his butt for this team for the past two years. The man is a monster and his play especially this year proved it. He got the votes, players get injured often in football, and now he’s in the game. Give him his props.

by Mangoman on Jan 26, 2010 1:24 PM PST up reply actions

I would if he deserved it

But making the Scrub Bowl is nothing I send kudos out for. He wasn’t a worthy entry. He was a last resort, just like most of the others that are playing in this joke called a game next week.

Got that right

The NFL failed us all. Put the Pro Bowl back where it belongs so we can have all the REAL players playing in it again. Not a bunch of back-ups.

by Ovalshine on Jan 26, 2010 2:07 PM PST up reply actions

Thoughts on the Pro Bowl aside, you’re failure was in determining that Justin Smith doesn’t deserve congratulations because the game won’t have it’s full slate of stars…at his position, he’s the first guy installed (not exactly last resort) and it shouldn’t negate his entry just because we’re 11 QBs deep at this point.

It’s a meaningless game, before or after the Super Bowl, and no one will remember or care how you earned your way in 10 years from now.

Not care pretty much sums things up

And it does appear that I’m being too negative on Justin Smith and if he does deserve it, then I’d rather him deserve a pro bowl better than this. A pro bowl that isn’t missing half its roster (or at least feels like it).

And nobody forgets epic mistakes like this year’s Pro Bowl. This is going down as one of the worst blunders in NFL history. Can’t tell me people are gonna forget it. Sadly, Justin Smith did nothing to deserve being a part of a disaster.

It’s great Justin Smith finally made a pro bowl. It’s disrespectful he made this one.

by Ovalshine on Jan 26, 2010 2:26 PM PST up reply actions

The Pro Bowl doesn’t generate enough excitement in any week to be considered an epic mistake.

You'd think so

But leave it to the braintrust to find a way. You’re right. The Pro Bowl generally doesn’t get much interest, but this is going from disinterest to being a laughingstock. It’s like this. How many people are gonna remember what Jacksonville’s done the past few years? Now how many are gonna remember Oakland? Epic mistakes can also be taking something forgettable and screwing it up so bad to where it becomes unforgettable.

Maybe there was a year once before where there was a lot of players that had to back out of the Pro Bowl that was easy to forget, but this will not be forgotten. Never. This will always be remembered as the NFL’s blunder of actually thinking putting the Pro Bowl BEFORE the Super Bowl was a good idea. People don’t forget something that big and when something that big is remembered, you begin to remember the little details, like how the QBs for the AFC were Schaub, Vince Young and Garrard.

I told somebody about Garrard making the Pro Bowl. He responded, “Who?” You know the error is on a epic scale when one of the QB names gets a “Who?” response.

This is actually a problem every season. In years past guys who played the SB often skipped the Pro Bowl. A year or two ago a conference had to turn to their 8th choice at RB. AFC at QB seems to be the sore spot this season.

What a horrible thing to say. Smith absolutely deserves this.

He absolutely deserves it. He had one of the best seasons of any defensive lineman in the league. 10 years from now when listing his accomplishments nobody is going to care that he went to the Pro Bowl because Pat Williams got injured.

Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.

by smileyman on Jan 26, 2010 3:40 PM PST up reply actions

And Smith is often overlooked because he plays in the 3-4 and the 49ers defense had yet to develop a reputation.

You say "Trust me."

Then say something very negative. No, I don’t think I will trust you!

Ovalshine

He is getting rewarded for being there every given Sunday, whereas some players like Tom Brady would rather be screwing Giselle than showing up for the Pro-Bowl…thats how the system works and 139 straight starts gets rewarded.

Good Job J Smith

Congrats Cowboy

Tim Tebow = 1,432,219 season tickets next year. Who wouldn't pick him in the 1st round with those projections?

Nice

According to ProFootballFocus, he was the highest rated 3-4 DE in the league this season. He had 16 QB hits (best among 3-4 DE’s) and an amazing 44 QB pressures (best among ALL DE’s, including guys like Freeney and Mathis). Great to see our unsung hero get recognition.

Congrats to J. Smith !
He is one of my favorites and works hard and makes those that play around him much better !
Great year Cowboy !

by TIM___ on Jan 26, 2010 3:34 PM PST reply actions

it is ridiculous

to think J. Smith doesn’t deserve to go…there are plenty of Dlineman in this league: some below average, many average; some good; and a few elite. Justin Smith has been playing at an very high level with little other help (unlike the man he replaced in the Pro Bowl) on the line for years now. His strong performance game in and game out warrant his selection, not to mention his iron man status for playing so long without an injury in a violent sport.

Yeah! Niners rollin deep into South Florida

cant believe people make an effort to hate on the Pro Bowl…. go watch tennis.

I think Gore sees the End Zone one more time this year.

Ninjames loves tennis.

by SportsChicken on Jan 26, 2010 9:11 PM PST up reply actions

you can't watch tennis aaaaaaaaannnnnnnnddd football??

Let me guess, you get confused by all the lines?? haha jk jk. But my fellow niner fan, there is definitely no correlation between hating on the pro bowl and watching tennis. Because I love the pro bowl (as pointless as it may seem to some of you). But i also love watching tennis which makes your statement rather confusing. And after, all the championship of the aussie open is played early in the morning here with the time change, while the pro bowl is at the 4 in the afternoon. So Yes i believe i will watch tennis and thennnnnnn i will watch the pro bowl ; )

Declining means giving up $22,500

Doubt he’ll do that.

Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.

by smileyman on Jan 27, 2010 12:13 AM PST up reply actions

He signed for how much?

Put that on the line for 22, 500? I wouldn’t. he doesn’t make 50,000 per season, I am sure.

Great Job #94

Good to finally see its makes it in his 10th pro season. If you dont think that making it to the pro-bowl at least once in a player’s career doesnt mean anything you are very wrong. These guys talk about it and they know that it means a lot to everyone.
-—————————————————————————————————————-
And to all you haters out there, let me help you think about this in a different way. Justin Smith shows up every single Sunday no matter what…He never takes a day off…So if people like Tom Brady, Kevin Williams, and other players want to rest their tired bodies and take the day off, so be it…Thats how the NFL works…Therefore lets reward the only guy out there that shows up whether his mother died, his ankle is sore, or he has the God-d@mn plague.

GO J SMITH #94

good recognition for a great 49er

Love Justin Smith. He deserves to be walking around with the leagues best

by ntfarell on Jan 26, 2010 10:59 PM PST reply actions

I understand the issues with this year's probowl

but there’s a difference between Gore and Smith being named as 1st or 2nd alternates (who deserve to go, Smith even more so than Gore in my opinion).

and that of David Garrard who was just named as the 6th or 8th alternate for the AFC side…
