Couple of problems with this off-season
#1—Logan Mankins doesn’t want to leave New England
#2—Brandon Marshall will require at least a first round pick to get him from Denver—he’s still under contract.
#3—Kyle Wilson won’t make it to the third. He’s one of the top 3 CBs coming out
#4—Dexter McCluster won’t make it to the 4th. He might not make it out of the 2nd.
Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.
Wouldn't Kellen and most of the other players as well
Most if not all the FA players will require trades of picks to get them. It’s funny how some people show what we get but not what we have to give out.

1. New England may still release Mankins, seeing as he’s pretty expensive and that the Patriots usually spend over the cap and their budget. Plus I believe they can draft his succesor, there are a lot of quality linemen in the draft.
2. Correction: Marshall will be a restricted free agent, so we still would have to give up a 1st rounder. I’ll change it to Vincent Jackson, an equally talented receiver who is most likely being released to free agency as his contract ended this season.
3. I guess so. I’ll rework it and make something happen.
4. See # 3.
Andy Lee for MVP! Hey, that rhymes...
1. Logan Mankins has 5 years in the league. Unless a CBA gets done he’s an RFA and the team can bring him back for the highest tender amount which is $2.92 million. If a team wants to grab him they’d have to fork over a 1st and a 3rd to pick him up. $3 million is bargain price for a guard of his quality.
2. Vincent Jackson is also an RFA unless a new CBA is agreed to, so he’s out.
Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.
Question
I appreciate that this is a lot of work to come up with. It’s much more than I ever put together for this kind of thing, that’s for sure. But is it possible to get some thoughts as to why you suggest the moves you suggest? Maybe give it a bit more context?
Too bad this FanPost
can’t be put in the Offseason Discussion, where it would thrive
1.Trent Williams 1.Brandon Graham 2. Syd Thompson 3.Torell Troup 4.Andrew Quarless 5.Mike Kafka 6.Quinton Andrews 7.Preston Parker
Well it's kind of big for a single post in the discussion
I think it’s ok having it as a separate fan post
Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.
single post
I agree with smileyman that it’s probably too big to put in the offseason discussion. Even if I don’t see most of this happening, it’s certainly impressive work.

Well, I did my best. I might not know as much about football as most, seeing as I didn’t really get the game until 7th grade (I’m in 8th now), I still think a lot like a Madden GM, and therefore I made some unreasonable trades. I still don’t get the people who said that this wouldn’t improve the team however. Woulnd’t you like to have Richard Seymour, Logan Mankins, and Eric Berry on this team?
Andy Lee for MVP! Hey, that rhymes...
Commendable effort
But teams don’t just give up good players they put a lot of time and money and work into for nothing or next to nothing.

You know the NFL doesn't work like MLB right?
You can’t just make 5 trades that easily.
What we've got here is a failure to communicate.
Trades: Isaac Sopoaga, Matt Wilhelm and Brandon Jones to the Patriots for 48th pick (2nd round)
So basically Isaac Sopoaga along with a salary cap hit (Brandon Jones) for a 2nd round pick. You do realize Randy Moss only got 4th round pick offer from the Pats? Sopoaga isn’t getting a 2nd round pick from anyone.
Kentwan Balmer and Demetric Evans to the Raiders for Kirk Morrison, Isaiah Ekejiuba, Wendell Bryant, and 136th pick (4th round)
Kentwan Balmer for a 4th round pick. Possible but not sure why he would peak the Raiders interest. Morrison isn’t much of an asset these days and I have no clue about Ekejiuba but I doubt players would be coming back in such a trade for Kentwan.
13th pick, 49th pick, Shaun Hill, and Glen Coffee to the Seahawks for 6th pick and 134th pick (4th round)
A backup QB and backup RB aren’t sweetening the trade. Maybe a 2nd round pick with the 49ers highest 1st would convince the Seahawks to trade down if they weren’t happy at the draft slot. Still, they might receive plenty of better offers if the pick was know to be for sale.
112th pick and 134th pick to the Saints for 95th pick (3rd round)
Possible, but if the Saints aren’t interested in the talent at the end of the 3rd round why would they want an additional 4th and 5th round pick? Conventional wisdom says a good team like the Saints wants higher picks, not more picks because it’s harder for a rookie to make the roster.
136th pick, 176th pick, and 208th pick to the Giants for 112nd pick (4th round)
Again at this point anything is possible. Teams veer off in all kinds of directions but it isn’t the 49ers MO. Based on the last two drafts McCloughan and staff appear full of themselves at the end of draft and would probably covet more late picks.
+ all the other comments related to the draft selections and free agent signings.
You know what? I’ll rework the whole thing. Be on the lookout for niners team need 2.5, this time with more reasonable trades and explanations behind every move. Coming in an hour or so!
Andy Lee for MVP! Hey, that rhymes...
It was a good first attempt. I was trying to give constructive criticism instead of just criticism. I thought 4 out of the 5 trades were plausible, maybe a minor tweak or two.
Agreed
and I think/hope we all are. I don’t thiink any of us would simply criticize for making an honest attempt. We do have a bit of a “bite” for people that say “look at me, I’m a genius! How could you even refute my opinion???!! I am a football god!” LOL. But for the most part we’re all in this together.

There are those type of critics around here

# 205 - John Russell Wake DE
LOL
I work in the computer industry and am used to criticism sometimes a bit acerbic in it’s even constructive criticism. I remember a boss of mine saying to a marketing guy “Were you born that stupid or did you have to really work at it?” LOL. You have to have a bit of a tough skin anywhere really but heck you guys only call me an idiot about 50% of the time LOL

This post should be titled
“What I wish would happen this offseason.”
Don't worry about me Thurgood, I'll be fine. The robbery is what's important now.
Yes, but not impossible. I used the official NFL trade value chart to make these deals work.
Andy Lee for MVP! Hey, that rhymes...
trades
The trades are certainly possible, but as someone else mentioned, the kind of player trading you’re suggesting just doesn’t happen all that frequently in the NFL. Looking at the Balmer trade for instance, I just don’t see the 49ers cutting ties with him quite yet given the initial investment so far.
by David Fucillo on Jan 31, 2010 12:40 PM PST up reply actions
Well...
1) The raiders are stupid, but not that stupid…(also, correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t Evans a FA? I think he signed a one-year deal last offseason).
2) Sopoaga is a player I’d actually like to hold on to.
3) The Forty Niners won’t trade up to get a higher first round pick.
4) The FA signings you mention with the amount of years they involve are ridiculous. I know it is an uncapped offseason, but do the Forty Niners have that type of money?
5) Why get Kyle Wilson and Dexter McCluster? McCluster is not injury-prone though small, so only him will do. Besides, the Forty Niners need to use draft picks on more O-linemen anyway.
Jason Hill supporter 'til the end
contract
According to Rotoworld, so take it for what it’s worth, the second year is actually a voidable year, although I’m not sure by whom.
by David Fucillo on Jan 31, 2010 2:20 PM PST up reply actions
Hopefully by me.....VOIDED
LOL, I hope the 49ers have the option and cut bait.
Tribute to #44...............The Elmira Express!!
He can be cut if the 49ers sign a better DE.

agree. Forget the trading up idea, drafting Kyle Wilson idea, and signing Logan Mankins idea. I still think that acquiring Seymour is a good idea, though. It would instantly make our run D the best in the league. Marshall probably will be expensive, too.
Andy Lee for MVP! Hey, that rhymes...
Seymour
I just don’t see it. Convince me please. I mean you have to remember that “Crazy Uncle Al” gave up the first rounder in next years draft and being the ornery old man and petulant child that he is, I don’t see him giving up Seymour without a big fight.
I’m not sure why you are saying give up drafting Kyle Wilson it’s not a bad idea. If you really like a player then you have to be willing to give up something to get him.
I think you have some good ideas in there amidst some “flights of fancy” and just need to come back to the ground a bit. :-)
