Tostitos Fiesta Bowl Gameday Thread

This evening will mark the 39th Annual Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. We're down to the last 4 college bowl games of the year and the Fiesta Bowl seems to have always had a lot of fireworks. Up until a few years ago, the Fiesta Bowl had originally been held at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, AZ but since has moved to University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, AZ. In 1998, the Fiesta Bowl became part of the Bowl Championship Series (BCS). Before 2007, every four years (most recently in 2003), was the designee for the National Championship.

This evening's game will be between The Boise State Broncos and The TCU Horned Frogs. One of the most memorable moments in Fiesta Bowl History was when senior Ian Johnson scored the game winning touchdown on a Statue of Liberty play against the heavily favored Oklahoma Sooners and then proposed to his cheerleader girlfriend on the sidelines. TCU since 1956 has not been ranked higher than they are currently ranked at # 4 in the Nation. This is considered to be the best team they have had since even before Ladanian Tomlinson's reign at TCU. TCU and Boise State have met two other times in previous bowl games; One was last year in the San Diego Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl which the Horned Frogs won 17-16, and the other was in '03 in TCU's backyard in The Plains Capital Fort Worth Bowl which The Broncos stole 34-31.

Below the jump, we will take a look at some of the key players, their stats throughout the season, and other information regarding tonight's game.

He has an arm though

seems like he may have a monster arm

he looked like he tried to put touch on that deep ball and he out threw his guy by 5 yards

Did you just see that horrible chubster in Orange???

I thought they didn’t let beasts like that on TV to bring down your schools rep in recruiting circles

The one that was closest to the screen

Wilson drilled him

Tim Tebow = 1,432,219 season tickets next year. Who wouldn't pick him in the 1st round with those projections?

Really?

I just turned the game on right now.

I’m disappointed.
He got pressure by just using the speed rush, but when he engages he can’t get any pressure.
Terrible use of hands.

What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

yeah

but that can be fixed

by Algiers on Jan 4, 2010 6:25 PM PST up reply actions

He's regarded as a possible first round prospect.

A first round prospect has to play better than that.

What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

by SportsChicken on Jan 4, 2010 6:27 PM PST up reply actions

He is being used as a spy alot

He has only been turned loose on a speed rush a couple times.

I don't know about that

I'm mostly trying to watch him in obvious passing situations

And he can’t get pressure with his hands

I've seen Parys Haralson do it a few times against Arizona

by SportsChicken on Jan 4, 2010 6:53 PM PST up reply actions

Actually got Hughes measurements wrong

6’3 257

Harelson is 6’0" 255. He’s a stout bastard. I don’t think he has the football instinct or natural abilities that Hughes has though. Remember this. Hughes has only played D-line for 4 years. He was a running back in high school. So that is probably a big part of his instinct for sniffing out screens and swing passes as he’s been doing today. He has all the time in the world to match his athletic talents to OLB.

Gimme 1 round!

...

IFFFFF the niners had him, they would only need him for his speed anyway…we don’t need him for strength…the niners need a speed pass rusher that can come in from the outside while patrick clogs up the middle, he wouldn’t be a DE in the pros in my opinion

by ntfarell on Jan 5, 2010 12:16 AM PST up reply actions

Ahmad Brooks

Has more speed and athleticism than Hughes.

You’re also forgetting the fact that teams can run on the outside and throw screens (the plays that shredded us all year).

He's also playing against a backup tackle

the starting tackle broke his ankle a couple of weeks ago.

Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.

by smileyman on Jan 4, 2010 7:52 PM PST up reply actions

Well to be fair

He’s been on like 5 speed rushes and beaten him on 3 of them. They are using him very conservatively because of the run threat.

I am not sure that speed will work in and of itself in the NFL. He’s gonna need to develop some moves. And he does seem to have a bit of a wind issue

He can read the QB quite well though.

by SportsChicken on Jan 4, 2010 6:48 PM PST up reply actions

Hence why I think he'll transition over to 3-4 OLB

(Which is the only position he can play in the NFL) quite well. He’s pulled out of his rush to shut down a swing pass when he was the only man to beat once, (Boise’s QB turned and scrambled away and made a play anyways but Hughes made the right play), stuffed a reverse that he read very well and been in the passing lane alot. Good reads.

His weakness is run stuffing as a lineman (He’s 250 lbs). This is the first time i’ve seen the stamina issue. He could also be sick or any number of things. Possibly an early adrenaline dump because he was winded by the 6th play of the game it seemed. We’ll see in the 2nd half.

Gimme 1 round!

My thoughts:
Not a good fit in SF.
He’s worse than Parys Haralson in run support and his biggest strength is his speed off the edge.
We already have the same guy in Ahmad Brooks, the difference is that Ahmad is much more athletic and has already proven himself at the NFL level.

Same size

Haden is a little bigger but they seem to have the same speed too.

I don’t think Wilson is better but he is more easily attainable.

Wow, really? he’s what 5’9" 197?? but he’s pretty physical, that’s what i’ve heard

by PiKAgiant on Jan 4, 2010 7:26 PM PST up reply actions

At the high school combine

(They push 185lbs) He put it up 40 times. That was in high school

Gimme 1 round!

by ItBurnzWhenIP on Jan 4, 2010 7:27 PM PST up reply actions

Yah it outright shocked me

That was basically his body weight in high school. I bet at the combine he does over 30 reps of 225 which will put him at or near the top of the linebacker class.

Gimme 1 round!

by ItBurnzWhenIP on Jan 4, 2010 7:30 PM PST up reply actions

YEa, but physicality can only get you so far… he’s got speed and he’s got some good press coverage… i think that’s something the niners need… is Brown better?

by PiKAgiant on Jan 4, 2010 7:31 PM PST up reply actions

Brown is faster

The thing about Haden is that he can’t hold his coverage for too long.
That’s why he presses.

What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

by SportsChicken on Jan 4, 2010 7:32 PM PST up reply actions

hence, pass rush has something to do with that

by PiKAgiant on Jan 4, 2010 7:34 PM PST up reply actions

Well Florida has a pretty good passrush

But whenever Haden had to cover for a long time he would get burned.

What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

by SportsChicken on Jan 4, 2010 7:35 PM PST up reply actions

Well I'm talking like 4 or so seconds

He can’t hold his coverage long enough some times.
Obviously all CBs will struggle if they have to cover for 8 seconds but Haden has more trouble than others

What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

by SportsChicken on Jan 4, 2010 7:37 PM PST up reply actions

Haden will run a low 4.4

possibly a high 4.3

He ran like a 4.43 at that high school combine

I think Brown is better than Haden but I know half of everyone hear will disagree. But the argument is still in my favor because we don’t know what Haden can or cannot do at the next level yet

I can’t disagree with you since, exactly “we don’t know what Haden can or cannot do at the next level” perfectly said

5-10 ish

Wilson is also 5-10 but is soft compared to Haden.

The biggest reason Haden plays so much press coverage, though, is because he can’t read WRs and can’t hold his coverage for too long.

I’m pretty sure Quinn can’t throw further than 40 yards

by PiKAgiant on Jan 4, 2010 7:45 PM PST up reply actions

Call me crazy...

But I think Quinn could have success if anyone actually spent the time to develop him and gave him a couple of WR’s to throw to. Mangini has done absolutely nothing to develop his QB’s and has spent the better part of the year pulling a Mike Nolan and berating them.

by sigma on Jan 4, 2010 7:46 PM PST up reply actions

I'll stay away from projections for now

I’m just watching prospects and seeing whether or not they would be good fits here.
I also want to see if they’re McCloughan type of guys.

Neither Hughes nor Wilson (the two guys I’m watching today) seem like McCloughan guys.
But I could actually see Kyle Wilson playing well in Manusky’s defense.

by Drew Kerr on Jan 4, 2010 7:12 PM PST up reply actions

From what I've taken from his quotes and the guys he's drafted...

He likes size (likes big CBs, WRs, and heavy OL) . He likes playmakers (Crabtree). He values production a little bit over potential(Crabtree, Coffee). He also seems to like guys that can block kicks.
He likes SEC guys a little more than other though.

He’s somewhat of a BPA guy too.

What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

by SportsChicken on Jan 4, 2010 7:16 PM PST up reply actions

But how much of a backseat you think he'll take

now with Singeltary in his 2nd year and York being a young guy easily influenced. Sing may just bulldog them both.

Well I don't know

But what I’m saying is that I’d rather watch a game between two teams that have like 8 or so NFL ready prospects in between the two.

by PiKAgiant on Jan 4, 2010 8:24 PM PST up reply actions

We shall see.

Pat White rocketed to the 2nd round with his play at the senior bowl.

Of course I have no idea how LeFevour plays so I don’t even know what to expect.

by SportsChicken on Jan 4, 2010 8:25 PM PST up reply actions

That’s a player who i kinda wish the niners drafted, but oh well

by PiKAgiant on Jan 4, 2010 8:26 PM PST up reply actions

Pat White?

Eh, I think he was overdrafted.

He hasn’t had too much of an impact in MIA.

What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

by SportsChicken on Jan 4, 2010 8:28 PM PST up reply actions

This is just based off of watching him play in west virginia, where he just made things happen, he made a ton of plays… But the question is, was that Steve Slaton doing that or was it Pat White

by PiKAgiant on Jan 4, 2010 8:29 PM PST up reply actions

Pat White played well after Slaton left.

But he’s been underwhelming in MIA.

Are you basing that...

off of the Cotton Bowl game? I’ve seen him play 15+ games over the past 3 years, and I’ve never had that impression of him. He’s mobile, got a great arm and singlehandedly carried his offense this year.

He had to be on our draft board. Too bad the Jets traded up to get him.
Greene scorched my nittany lions for days.

How do you like Royster?

Think he’ll do well in the pros?

by sigma on Jan 4, 2010 8:57 PM PST up reply actions

Penn State had a better RB two years ago

unfortunately he was a SPED. literally in special education. His name was Austin Scott

by goatfather on Jan 4, 2010 9:00 PM PST up reply actions

Royster is a good fit for the pros

Very patient and a strong runner, although I don’t think he has the speed to hit the holes.

Brandon Thomas...

managed to improve his draft stock tonight.

by sigma on Jan 4, 2010 8:51 PM PST reply actions

He loves coaching college and loves coaching Boise in particular.

I seem to remember him getting offers and saying that he’s committed to his guys.

Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.

Plus he just got a five year extnesion.

Is there chocolate in that football?

What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

LOL

I’m still laughing

by bignerd on Jan 4, 2010 8:58 PM PST up reply actions

I've got a golden football

and with every golden football is a golden…?

by goatfather on Jan 4, 2010 8:59 PM PST up reply actions

If there was, that chick thats announcing them ate it already

Tim Tebow = 1,432,219 season tickets next year. Who wouldn't pick him in the 1st round with those projections?

by Drew Kerr on Jan 4, 2010 8:59 PM PST up reply actions

LMAO

I was just thinking that.

She sounds really uninterested.
Maybe she’s a TCU fan.

What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

Maybe she needs her hourly doughnut

by Drew Kerr on Jan 4, 2010 9:01 PM PST up reply actions

I just took a crap

bigger than than golden football, and it was golden too. Because I drink goldshlager

by goatfather on Jan 4, 2010 8:58 PM PST reply actions

really?

I’d love to hear that argument. I think he may benefit from a descent team. Just a thought.

by goatfather on Jan 4, 2010 9:03 PM PST up reply actions

Sanchez may be decent

The logic of my argument is he was a better QB than Booty at USC.

Gimme 1 round!

by ItBurnzWhenIP on Jan 4, 2010 9:04 PM PST up reply actions

so am I

better than Booty, John David?

by goatfather on Jan 4, 2010 9:05 PM PST up reply actions

lol

By the way – Thank God (Patrick Willis) we didn’t draft that dude.

by goatfather on Jan 4, 2010 9:06 PM PST up reply actions

Oh P.Willis

I can’t believe anybody even thought about that. I’m an SC fan and I would tell everybody that would listen he was horrible.

Gimme 1 round!

by ItBurnzWhenIP on Jan 4, 2010 9:07 PM PST up reply actions

It remains a mistery to me

that people forget about the talent diparity in college football, and how easily an average QB playing with elite talent can be mistaken for an NFL QB

by goatfather on Jan 4, 2010 9:09 PM PST up reply actions

It was in last nights' SNF thread.

It may still be on the front page.

I argued that Mark Sanchez has potential but still hasn’t proven anything.

What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

by SportsChicken on Jan 4, 2010 9:08 PM PST up reply actions

I'll have to take a look at that.

When I actually think about questioning whether or not Sanchez has potential.

by goatfather on Jan 4, 2010 9:11 PM PST up reply actions

LOL

I would have liked for you to take part in that argument.

Drummer kept glorifying Mark Sanchez and refused to admit that he wasn’t really that good.

What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

Kyle Brotzman is gonna be the meat in a 2 lady sandwich tonight

Gimme 1 round!

by ItBurnzWhenIP on Jan 4, 2010 9:06 PM PST reply actions

When I kneel to my God

Patrick Willis’ nuts are in my face

by goatfather on Jan 4, 2010 9:08 PM PST reply actions

Good for you

What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

by SportsChicken on Jan 4, 2010 9:09 PM PST up reply actions

Jerry hughes jerry hughes jerry hughes!!

Liked what i saw out of this guy….lets turn him into a hybrid LB/DE in as a pass rusher with some speed off the edge!!! Take him with our second first round pick, maybe even first depending on how his stock jumps or drops. if he’s sloted for late first round lets trade back and get another first rounder next year???? just one idea

by ntfarell on Jan 5, 2010 12:11 AM PST reply actions

Didn't you follow any of the conversations?

He doesn’t seem like such a good fit in SF.

He is pretty much the same as Ahmad Brooks.

I’d like a guy that compares to Manny Lawson, but actually has pass rush moves.

What we've got here is a failure to communicate.
