FedEx Orange Bowl Gameday Thread
We got a pretty good crowd last night for the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl and I would guess that we will get the same this evening for the Orange Bowl. Just one more game after tonight before we get to the National Championship Game. This evenings matchup should be nothing short of exciting. There are some dynamic players coming of both sidelines which should make it even more interesting. The Orange Bowl has been revered as one of the most prestigious bowl games. The history of the Orange Bowl goes all the way back to 1935 and in that time have been some fantastic knock 'em down drag 'em out slugfests.
Tonight's matchup features The # 9 ranked Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets against The # 10 ranked Iowa Hawkeyes. Georgia Tech finished 1st in the ACC Coastal Division with a (11-2, 7-1) record while Iowa finished 2nd in the Big Ten with a (10-2, 6-2) record. Like I mentioned above, there will be several key players in this game. Below the jump we will look at some of these players, their stats, and other relative information to the game tonight.

Tim Tebow = 1,432,219 season tickets next year. Who wouldn't pick him in the 1st round with those projections?
Iowa is the underdog though

Lets Go Hawkeyes
Ive been pumped about this game for the past month. I swear I have the strangest variety of favorite sports teams, lol

He would have more that is for sure
but look at his Avg per catch above. Imagine if he had Case Keenum or Pike or one of thsoe guys throwing it to him. He would probably have 2000 Yards receiving and 90 Catches or so…
Nesbitt’s Comp Rate is less than 50%

At least D. Morgan and B. Bulaga are matched up against each other

What is the malfunction?

Bulaga is so far
winning the matchup I care most about
Would be funny if we ended up drafting both and they play against each other in practice next year
Gimme 1 round!
Morgan is getting a consistent push
But Bulaga isn’t letting him do much more than that.

yup
And even though I’m kookoo for Jerry Hughes there is no comparing the talent between Morgan and Hughes.
Morgan is almost as good as Orakpo IMO

Plus Morgan has more of the size we would want for a DE in a 3-4 scheme
"God tells me he can get me out of this mess, but he's pretty sure you're fucked."-Braveheart
Well I want Hughes as an OLB
and we can get him in the 2nd round quite possibly. He’s got great instincts and speed and is only weak against the run… and the entire rest of our team is strong against the run to make up for that but can’t get pressure most of the time. Morgan would be great as a 3-4 DE though
Gimme 1 round!
by ItBurnzWhenIP on Jan 5, 2010 6:06 PM PST up reply actions
Morgan is more of a 4-3 DE
What we've got here is a failure to communicate.
by SportsChicken on Jan 5, 2010 6:07 PM PST up reply actions
Georgia tech may disagree
They run a 4-3 defense and use him as a DE.
When they go with 3 down linemen they stand Morgan up.
He is much more effective from the 4-3 DE position than from the 3-4 OLB position though.

most of them are Juniors

From what ive heard
Their entire D-Line will be back, they will lose at least 2 guys on the O-Line, 3 if Bulaga comes out. Almost everybody should be back, at least 17 or 18 of the 22 starters, which would make Iowa an early Big Ten favorite for next year. The thought of it just gets me excited

yep
Angerer, Dace Richardson on the OL, Their RT whose na,me escapes me, Possibly AJ Edds at LB, not sure if he’s a junior or senior. Otherwise this is a very junior and senior heavy team, and since their best DL (Clayborne) already said he’d be back, id imagine most of the team will return, and make a serious statement next year for the Big 10

Was a good pick
Stanzi has been doing great otherwise
Tim Tebow = 1,432,219 season tickets next year. Who wouldn't pick him in the 1st round with those projections?
As an Iowa Fan I think the thing I like most about Stanzi
Is the fact that he has a short memory. The guy can throw a few picks and then lead his team to a comeback. I think it was the Mich State Game this year when he threw like 3 or 4 picks in the 3rd quarter, and then led his team back to win on that last play slant. The guy is great mentally, which is hard to find in college quarterbacks sometimes.

Hawk fan here in Iowa...
…loved the game last night, enjoying your salivation over B Bulaga, but would like to point out that in GTs running scheme they do A LOT of chop cut blocking, which is why they were on their heads so often.
Their lines were way to small for Iowa (we’re used to playing Wisconsin and Ohio State for (site decorum) sakes. Leading up to the game everyone said we would get run all over, but our guys had the power AND the speed to overcome Coach Johnson’s triple option flexbone spread whatever he calls it.

Pretty big transition when you’re talking about going from college to pro. That’s the main reason Staley was not good over there. There is an adjustment to the speed of the game. Staley has that down. I say it makes more sense to throw Staley to the right side now that he has the speed of the game down. Start Bulaga at the LT position.

Tim Tebow = 1,432,219 season tickets next year. Who wouldn't pick him in the 1st round with those projections?
I've only seen a few minutes of this game
but he’s looked impressive.
Who’s the RT?
Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.
Kyle Calloway
He’s a senior, i think he’s predicted to go somewhere in the 2nd or 3rd round

Well Morgan is ranked as one of the best DE prospects in the country
so if he’s doing OK against him either Morgan is overrated or Calloway is underrated.

Yeah I haven't been paying much attention to that matchup

Let's draft him too...
Seriously. This is the most impressive Offensive Line performance I’ve seen since Stanford’s pow’ned USC’s in that walloping.
Calloway is usually the RT, but he moved inside to RG for the game
the RT last night was a freshman, Riley Reiff. The guy that filled in for Bulaga when he was out for 3 games from the thyroid.

Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.
pro style offense
and if you watch his eyes, he makes reads, knows when to break the pocket, and rarely throws it up for grabs unless it’s back of the end zone. And as was said he has a short memory and toughness about him.
People say Iowa won in spite of him…well they also were 9-0 with him and lost the last 2 games, the big 10, and their faint championship hopes.

There hasn’t been an good act since U2 performed at the SuperBowl in New Orleans and there hasn’t been an act from this generation since the NippleGate debacle.
I demand performers who have actually released an album this decade at some point. Like Jay-Z or Lady Gaga or Coldplay or MUSE or Kings of Leon or Kanye or someone who’s songs haven’t been relegated to a classic rock station. Let them do a whole set without the stupid mashups and just rock the place.

by SportsChicken on Jan 5, 2010 7:40 PM PST up reply actions
Moreso than...
Trent Williams? Okung will probably be taken by Detroit, but there are two or three OT’s on the board right now above Bulaga.
5. Russell Okung
8. Trent Williams
14. Anthony Davis
24. Bruce Campbell
27. Brian Bulaga
That’s how the draft board sits right now…
Trent Williams stock has fallen this year
and with this game Bulaga is going to jump a whole bunch of spots
Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.
Trent Williams is a RT
Anthony Davis is good but I still think he might end up at G if he can’t block speed rushers.
Bruce Campbell would be the No.1 OT if not for his injury history.

Seattle runs a zone-blocking scheme

by SportsChicken on Jan 5, 2010 7:50 PM PST up reply actions
He’s not slow… what gave you that impression. He plays every position on the line. You have to be a pretty good athlete to do that.
And as for your McShay comment above…he may not always be 100% accuarate but he has been doing it for a living for a while. And when Mel Kiper agrees with him (which is not often), there is some validity to that
Tim Tebow = 1,432,219 season tickets next year. Who wouldn't pick him in the 1st round with those projections?

I didn't see the Bowl game.
I wish I could have caught it….
Let me know if you come across a video from the game.
But Morgan isn’t a speed guy.
The video shows that Davis will dominate any guy that tries to engage him but his feet look very slow (compared to Bulaga, who I’m watching right now)
I’m concerned that Davis will get burned by speed guys in the NFL.

Tim Tebow = 1,432,219 season tickets next year. Who wouldn't pick him in the 1st round with those projections?
See the video
He looks slow and unimpressive.
Or maybe it’s because I’m watching Bulaga play right now too.
Bulaga looks way better.

We don't have a shot at getting Ndamukong Suh
