BCS National Championship Game Thread

Well...we're finally here folks. One game--one winner crowned National Champions for the 2009-2010 Season. Either way this contest goes, I can imagine that we are in for an action packed game tonight. Both teams have fought hard to get to this point and even though there is a spread on the game, I would find myself hard pressed to bet on either team. This game will feature the best-of-the-best on both sides of the ball on offense and defense. For once, I agree with the bowl selection process for the final game and believe that these two teams are the best two in the Nation and deserve to be here.

Both teams are very strong on defense and both have scored quite a bit when the offense doesn't have the ball. We have a Heisman winner in Mark Ingram and a tough offensive line in Alabama going against arguably the best front seven in the land in Texas. These players will be playing every down like it is their last tonight, and for some it will be which should make for a sensational game.

Texas finished the year with a perfect record of (13-0, 8-0) while Alabama finished perfectly as well with a mirroring record of (13-0, 8-0). Texas won a close-hard-fought game against Nebraska in the Big 12 Championship game. Ndamukong Suh almost single-handedly destroyed Texas' Offensive Line. The Longhorns will need to hold fast against Alabama's blitzing defense. While Terrence Cody is no Ndamukong Suh, he can still wreak havoc in smashing offensive linemen in to running lanes; the linebackers for Alabama are some of the best blitzing linebackers in the nation and the combination of those two elements will spell trouble for McCoy and the Horns. Alabama totally destroyed Florida in the SEC Championship and made Tim Tebow cry (sorry, had to get that in there). I suspect that this game won't be a shootout but will create just as much energy as one.

Below, I will list the starting line-ups for tonight's game. I will mark some of the key players to watch with and asterisk so that we can follow some of these pro prospects a bit better. First we will look at the Big 12 Champion Texas Longhorns followed up by the SEC Champion Alabama Crimson Tide.

Should I be ashamed that I’ve got absolutely no interest in this game at all?

Maybe

I know I love college football and I hate Texas…so maybe I have more incentive to watch it

Probably going to be a defensive battle

other than that, there are alot of pro prospects in this game

The 49ers have about 4 guys that are really on the radar and the only one that might be there is Earl Thomas.

Outside of that, the pro prospects at least for the 49ers is at min in this game.

by Owner on Jan 7, 2010 5:14 PM PST up reply actions

There are some offensive linemen and cornerbacks as well. Defensive linemen, etc… there is alot more than just Earl Thomas that we should be looking at. Particularly for the later rounds

Mike Johnson

is a very highly regarded Offensive Guard for the Crimson Tide, he may be worthy of watching as well

by Drew K on Jan 7, 2010 5:20 PM PST up reply actions

The 49ers problem has been really simple.

We need a Tackle. We need a right tackle as Staley does a fine job protecting Smith’s blind side.

by Owner on Jan 7, 2010 5:46 PM PST up reply actions

I never said he was good

But our OT is a bigger problem as that is where the majority of the pass rush comes from.

by Owner on Jan 8, 2010 9:51 AM PST up reply actions

He significantly improved his run-blocking near the end of the season though...

I liked his performance since the (second) Arizona game.

Baas does a great job run blocking

Gets overpowered in pass blocking though. If we had a good RT that could shift to help out Rachal then Heitmann could shift over to help out Baas.

Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.

Tim Tebow is a whiner. Just because Brown didn’t lobby other coaches in the coaching poll, doesn’t mean that Texas didn’t deserve to go to battle Florida. We just have class, unlike Stoops.

by chikmagnet_565 on Jan 7, 2010 6:37 PM PST up reply actions

I don't agree with their analysis of Clausen over Suh

They are talking about Clausen like he’s the second coming… he was good but honestly i’ve seen better prospects at QB almost every single year coming out of college. He would be the 2nd prospect if Locker came out.

There is no way you take Clausen over Suh.

Gimme 1 round!

by ItBurnzWhenIP on Jan 7, 2010 6:39 PM PST up reply actions

They aren't good at evaluating DL prospects dude.

Jimmy Clausen is still a very good QB and IMO much better than any of last year’s QBs.

Ndamukong Suh could be a one in every “X” years type of talent, though.

Last year's QB class is EXTREMLY poor though

Sanchez was the best one. I honestly think Barkley as a true frosh is about as good as Sanchez was as a senior. I mean seriously… Josh Freeman was taken as a top QB??

by ItBurnzWhenIP on Jan 7, 2010 6:44 PM PST up reply actions

Barkley sucks.

Nowhere near as good as Sanchez.

I wanted to say Clausen is the best QB to come since 2008, but he’s not as polished as Ryan or Flacco….

#1 QB in the draft (according to some people)

I've already commented about that...

read the last comment " Well they do have to try and further the idea…

that the SEC should be an added division to the NFL, and they should always be in the NC game, no matter what…it is quite a joke, at least there are some people and programs that have some honor, like Michigan State who could have just ignored their 14 players violations and let them play in their bowl game (which would have helped them win), but actually disciplined them"

have anything to do with what ‘Bama did. If Boise State had been found guilty of this same infraction (with no postseason penalties) the coaches would be doing the same thing. It’s just their policy.

I guess they don't really count....

unless the SEC has a tremendous record, then we can use them to show how strong the SEC is lol

I didn't say you said it, and I didn't mean to imply it....

It is just the funny, hypocritical stuff I usually hear from other SEC and Big 12 fans, when they do well in a bowl game or bowl games, they are like “See how good we are?” But when they lose, it is like “Oh that doesn’t mean anything, the field was sloppy, the ref sneezed when that flag was thrown” lol

Still doesn't change the fact....

that the game will be easier for Bama. And when I saw the Big 12 and SEC are frauds, I mostly mean they aren’t as strong as everyone thought they were at the beginning of the year….shady SEC officiating kept Florida undefeated until the SEC champ game, which made Bamas win over them worth even more than it should have….and look at the bowl records, the Mountain West is the only conference that has had a dominant bowl season

by sanfranfanmdk on Jan 7, 2010 7:10 PM PST up reply actions

Well they do have to try and further the idea...

that the SEC should be an added division to the NFL, and they should always be in the NC game, no matter what…it is quite a joke, at least there are some people and programs that have some honor, like Michigan State who could have just ignored their 14 players violations and let them play in their bowl game (which would have helped them win), but actually disciplined them

Turf Toe

Turf toe can heal you know? He had developed symptoms the 4th to last game and it bothered him for those set of games. But in his bowl game he looked fine. It was real minor.

I had turf toe my sophomore year in high school playing on the JV football team. The following year I played Varsity and the year after….I played college baseball and never had another problem with it again.

Spiller is going to have how many months for it to heal? Enough is the answer to that question. I don’t even flinch at the turf toe argument. He will be fine and 100% going in as a rookie

Boise played Oregon and has tried to schedule other power houses but teams won’t take the challenge. Boise’s conference is also underrated. The Mountain West might be better than 2 established BCS conferences.

I don’t know much about TCU or Cincy other than Cincy playing in the Big East.

Just cause his Dad did something against the law doesn’t mean he will. I think he will be fine.

Not really

Thats more than likely Tebow. I’m just trolling you all on the Ingram tip. I really have nothing against him other than he’s on the tide. I do hate Tebow though cause I think his entire personality is fake as hell.

Gimme 1 round!

I don't know how long you've been around here.

But this is the first time I have ever behaved myself like such a douche.

I just don’t like Colt McCoy and will continue to belittle him until he fizzles out in the NFL.
Everyone over-hypes him, someone has to keep it real.

What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

by chikmagnet_565 on Jan 7, 2010 9:15 PM PST up reply actions

Keeping it real...

Would be saying that you don’t think he’s as good as advertised. That you don’t think his arm is strong enough. That you don’t think he gets out of the pocket quickly enough. Things like that. Seeming to celebrate a very serious injury, even to a QB you don’t like, is to reach a depth even Iggels fans struggle to reach.

by sigma on Jan 8, 2010 2:08 AM PST up reply actions

I'm not celebrating his injury

I’m pissed that he got hurt because I wanted to knock on him all day.

by chikmagnet_565 on Jan 8, 2010 8:43 AM PST up reply actions

Have to be careful in that situation...

You don’t want to end up exacerbating whatever might have happened to the arm.

and he’ll still probn be a 2nd rounder. Maybe a late 1st
