Niners Nation Official Football Fantasy support post Week 4
Fooch's Note: Since we've got some time before tomorrow's games, feel free to ask/answer fantasy related questions. In one league I have to deal with an injured Steven Jackson. He's sounding like a game-time decision, and since I'll be traveling when the 1pm pacific games start I might have to play it safe and start Tim Hightower in his place.
Last week's post was such a great hit that we've decided to make it a regular feature. Of course you might want to think twice about accepting the wisdom of Ninersnation readers:
They suggested I start Palmer over Gradkowski and he earned more fantasy points, and they suggested sitting Hines Ward since Charlie Batch was starting in Pittsburgh (and we know how that worked out).
Here are some fantasy sleepers that might be worth picking up
If you're short a QB, you might want to look at Kyle Orton. Over the last three games Orton has thrown for 295 yards, 307 yards, and last week a whopping 476 yards in their loss to Indianapolis. He's thrown 4 TDs to 2 INTs in that time period and he's not owned in most leagues.
He's definitely a sold #2 and in the league where I own Gradkowski and Palmer he's an upgrade.
All those yards have to go somewhere so his receivers are worth looking at too. Brandon Lloyd has had games of 117, 53 and 169 yards. He's got a pretty good shot at being unowned in most leagues.
If you haven't picked up Lois Murphy yet, do so. Week one he had a meager 28 yards. Week 2 he had 95 yards and last week he had 119 yards. Definitely worth considering as a number 2 WR.
Here are some running backs worth considering. Mike Goodson is worth picking up. He's third on the depth chart in carolina so he doesn't get many carries but he's used a fair amount out of the backkfield so is worth picking up as a #2 or #3 back.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

I don't have any RBs
I have Rice who is going up against the steelers and Matthews who is just coming off of an injury what to do what to do.
who knows..
i would if it is a PPR league..

Rice was matchup proof last year
He hung like 10+ pts on the Steelers every time he played them.
Mostly in catching yards.

RBs and WRs...Who should I start?
I have Ray Rice, Rashard Mendenhall, Ahmad Bradshaw, Knowshon Moreno at RB
I have Randy Moss, Santana Moss, Malcom Floyd, Mark Clayton, Hines Ward at WR
2 RBs and 2 WRs, with 1 flex.

Clayton's a surprisingly good play these days
I like to follow red zone targets to help with fantasy picks

Coach Boone: And who's team is this, Gary? Is this your team? Or is this your daddy's team?
Bertier: Yours.
Coach Boone: Now get on the bus. Put on your jacket first and then get on the bus.
I’d roll with Mendenhall and Bradshaw as well as Moss and Moss. Make your flex Rice, but consider Floyd too.

Start looking forward to Week 5
Or you better hope a WR or QB goes off this weekend.
Bring Briggs Back!!!
Heres my team, tell me if the trade I just made is good for me
QBs: Tony Romo, Chad Henne
RBs: Ray Rice, Arian Foster, Knowshon Moreno, Ahmad Bradshaw (Ryan Grant! ARGH)
WRs: Miles Austin, Randy Moss, Santana Moss, Malcom Floyd, Mark Clayton, Mike Sims-Walker
TEs: Chris Cooley, Marcedes Lewis
D/ST: Ravens and Packers
I think this following trade is an absolute steal, am I right here?
I trade away Henne, Foster, Sims-Walker
I get in return Drew Brees, Rashard Mendenhall, Hines Ward
"Morrison beats Casspi 1 on 1". - MarcusC
And btw, I am planning on trading away Brees after
Should I target a high quality RB to bolster my RBs or should I go after a WR?
(I have already been offered Andre Johnson straight up for Brees)

Stupid auto post
yeah it’s a good deal
In the ESPN league, here’s how those players rank in points
Brees
15
18
28
Mendenhall
25
6
20
Ward
12
0
10
Total points—124
Henne
7
8
24
Foster
43
12
10
Sims-Walker
0
18
4
Total fantasy points—136
You’re actually giving away more points, with a huge caveat. A full 43 of those came from Foster’s first week—he’s not likely to have another like. 24 came from Henne last week and he’s more likely to be around 15-20 a week and Sims-Walker had 18 in one game but he’s more likely to be around 10.
The other thing about Brees—and this is what I hate him for—he takes awhile to warm up for fantasy owners. I’ve owned him for 4 of the last 5 years that I’ve done fantasy football and it wasn’t until around the 4th or 5th game each season that he started producing big numbers.
So I’d definitely pull the trigger on it, and then wait until Brees has a monster game which might very well be this week against Carolina, and then trade him for a top RB straight up.
Fire Jimmy Raye
IAWTC
Foster’s solid, but I doubt he’ll be spectacular (i.e. 25+ points) ever again this season. Brees hasn’t been lighting it up, but his upside down the road is tremendous, and Mendenhall’s been really good—I see Foster to Mendenhall as a slight upgrade. Ward isn’t going away; he had 1100+ yards last year for a reason. If you’d make the trade, you’d have a lot invested in the QB position, but that puts you in a good position to trade for better talent at another position down the line.
Start the young ones early, I always say.

Ward is going to go big when Ben comes back
Coach Boone: And who's team is this, Gary? Is this your team? Or is this your daddy's team?
Bertier: Yours.
Coach Boone: Now get on the bus. Put on your jacket first and then get on the bus.
Nah
Ben’s been out of football for a month.
hasn’t even been able to practice with the team because of the suspension. He’ll be very, very rusty
So if I had a 2nd tier quarterback like Flacco...
and Ben is owned in my league, I should wait for him to play a week before trying to deal for him?
Start the young ones early, I always say.
twitter me @grantmp1
I'd wait for Ben to have a big game
then trade him while he’s hot.
I really don’t think Ben will earn you any more points in the long run than flacco will
Eh
If he’s in a position to make the playoffs I wouldn’t advise him to trade Ben.
He can carry his team through the playoffs.

I'd take Flacco over Ben
Roethlisberger is too up and down.
Last year he had 3 games with 400 or more passing yards (one with 500), but he also had 5 games with less than 250 yards.
Really?
I’m thinking PIT will pass WAY more than BAL later this year.
And as much as I hate Ben (I know you hate him too) he’s a very good QB and he’s better than Flacco.

Baltimore has yet to get their ground game going
which sucks since I drafted Ray Rice in one of my leagues.
I think they’re going to playing games where they’re going to have to pass to keep in it.
Of course Flacco’s not looked good either, so maybe you go with the veteran
bignerd blames Cam Cameron
They’re not giving Ray Rice the ball enough.
I’m thinking that eventually they go back to running the ball (probably not this week) and stop passing so much.

He's been practicing
Granted it’s not with his WRs, but he’s been hard at work with a QB coach.
He’ll be a little rusty for a week or two but it’s not going to be a big issue.

I just can't see how a QB
can perform well when he’s not been with the offense for 4 weeks and has not had a chance to develop any timing or get into any sort of rythm. About the only good thing you can say is that he’ll be fresh.
I just don't see how he will make the PIT offense any worse than it is right now
I mean, they really produced with Charlie Batch at QB….Charlie Batch.
You can’t tell me Batch had chemistry with the WRs….

Batch benefited from a couple of long passes
in the TB game, and promptly submitted a stink bomb vs Baltimore (12/21, 141 yds, 0 td, 1 int) yesterday. Anybody’s an upgrade.

I’m crazy, but you’ve already got Tony Romo whose bye week is this week and then you don’t have to look back for the rest of the season. Getting Drew Brees and flipping him for someone else seems pointless. Why not just flip Foster for a better player instead? You’re the middle man with Brees, and teams aren’t going to pay your demands because you are painted in a corner with both Romo and Brees on your roster (hint: you can’t start 2 QBs and most people know this).
by Andrew Davidson on Oct 1, 2010 10:31 PM PDT up reply actions
A smart trader
will look at Foster and realize that he’s not done much since his week 1 blow-up. He’s fast losing any trade value unless he can show that he can be a consistent number one. He only rushed for 69 yards against the Redskins who have the worst defense in the league and got only 106 against the Cowboys a week later. He hasn’t scored any TDs since that first week either.
If he gets Brees he can flip either him or Romo for a true #1 RB.
Fire Jimmy Raye
I don’t think he can, people will see he’s got Brees and Romo and not give into trade demands.
by Andrew Davidson on Oct 2, 2010 9:13 AM PDT up reply actions
I do suppose it is a steal
But do you really need Brees?
He’s banged up and you already have Romo…

Brees isn't that banged up
and like I pointed out earlier he always takes a few weeks to get into true fantasy form
Fire Jimmy Raye
Regardless
Is it really important to get that extra 1-2 ppg?
If he’s going to trade for Brees, might as well include Romo in the deal and get more out of the other guy.

I think there's a confusion here
I’m saying get Brees in that trade that he mentioned above, wait until he has a big game then flip him or Romo for a #1 QB.
Not saying he needs to upgrade from Romo to Brees—Romo’s just fine as a #1 fantasy QB
Ah, I get you
I wouldn’t do it, personally.
Trades are hard to pull off. No guarantee that someone will bite on Brees even after a big game.

TE/WR Flex Spot
Who would you start between Chris Cooley and Mario Manningham in a PPR format.
Just keep in mind that the Giants WRs are very inconsistent
Cooley is usually the opposite of that.
I guess it comes down to how you feel about Philly’s LBs/S and how they can match up on Cooley.

Thanks alot
I have started Cooley the last 3 weeks and hes been solid. My only let downs have been my WRs Colston and Jennings are both having rough times.
Complete side note but what do you guys think Wittens trade value is right now or coming out the bye week.
Both those guys are REALLY inconsistent (Colston, Jennings)
But you kind of have to keep starting them because they can blow up for big games at any time.
As for Witten, I don’t really know how well he’s been doing right now but you might be able to get something for him soley on name recognition.
Keep in mind that his value might get lower as Dez Bryant starts getting more targets.

That's why I don't draft Colston anymore
I’d rather take a guy that I know is gonna get 90-115 yards every game than one that will have 50 yards one game and 170 another
Exactly
This is why I love Wes Welker.

What's up with the Pats TEs?
Gronkowski is really good in the redzone and scores TDs.
But Hernandez just keeps racking up the yards.
Is Hernandez picking up real or garbage yards?
What we've got here is a failure to communicate.
"I'm just like you, but 10 times better"
Real yards
The Patriots are using a two TE offense on passing. Hernandez is a good open field runner.
Bring Briggs Back!!!
Hernandez was picked with one of the picks we gave up to grab Davis
i forget how it worked out but that pick ended up with the Pats who chose Hernandez (who would’ve been a first rounder except for his marijuana use).

I doubt he would have been a 1st rounder
Sure he’s athletic and is basically a WR playing TE, but he can’t block worth a damn.

Do people think the Rams Seahawks game is going to be a blowout?
I’m thinking of starting Mark Clayton over Hines Ward (vs. Bal) and Crabtree (vs. Atl) because Clayton seems like Bradford’s #1 option, and neither of those defenses seem like they’re going to shut anybody down. Am I crazy?

Favre's got a tough couple of games
travelling to Green Bay then travelling to New England. Then he gets to play at home against the Cardinals and then the Bears. Both of those should be big games for him.
He absolutely shredded the Packers last year

I don't own him this year
(I did last year in two leagues), so I can hope that the Packers completely shut him down.
The Packers passing defense is one of the best in the league this year. They’ve only given up 432 yards passing in three games.
Of course they haven’t exactly played top teams so far.

They're on the field WAY too much
And they’re dealing with short fields because the offense keeps turning the ball over.
As for the returns/Ginn: Ginn is hurt and while he is a good returner, his blockers suck.

Help!
Which three of these running backs should I start? (my league has 2RB and 1 flex):
Forsett vs Rams
McCoy vs Redskins
Gore vs Falcons
Foster vs Raiders
Do I switch McCoy out for Forsett?
by Rod Blogojevich on Oct 2, 2010 3:26 PM PDT via mobile reply actions
Yeah
Gore might not get a whole bunch of yards rushing but he gets used a bunch as a receiver so he can get you yards that way.
McCoy doesn’t get used receiving and has had only one game with 100+ yards and that was against Detroit.
Fire Jimmy Raye
which flex would you start
Deion Branch (WR SEA, ESPN predicting 11 pts)
Derrick Mason (WR BAL, ESPN predicting 4 pts)
Darren Sproles (RB SD, ESPN predicting 2 pts)
Maurice Morris (RB DET, ESPN predicting 9 pts)
Note I am also starting Ryan Matthews so if I went with Sproles I would be starting 2 SD RBs.
Also note Maurice Morris depends on Best starting or not. Sounds like Best is going to start and is recovering well from turf toe.
I'd probably start Sproles
I don’t like either of those options for you and at least with Sproles you know he’ll get some touches and he might break a few long returns (assuming your league allows points for returns)
Fire Jimmy Raye
I would scour the waiver wire quickly...but out of those options I would go with Mason, he generally plays well against Pitt
