Official NN Alex Smith Discussion FanPost

The 49ers game is not over yet but there will be a lot of Alex Smith discussion after the game. Do NOT create new Alex Smith FanPosts tonight. PLEASE keep all the discussion in here. The 49ers fans at Candlestick joined many of the folks here at Niners Nation absolutely unloading on the 49ers and Alex Smith. The 49ers fell behind 24-10 thanks in part to Smith, but also because of numerous other factors. However, it's not surprising that Smith would bear the brunt of the fans ire.

If Smith turns this thing around I'll add an update to this FanPost, but for now please use this post for the discussion.

Also, please rec this to keep it up top.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

Smith

Last minute INT to lose the game.. after two very impressive drives.. well, it was Smiths game to win and he couldnt do it.. I for one do not want to see Carr after this.. I’d rather see Troy Smith. At least he’ll be entertaining… I dont know what to think after this…

very fitting.

he shows promise, then lets everyone down, people call for his job, all of a sudden he shows promise again, and then in the end he cant get it done.

this game was alex smith’s career in a nutshell, except the part where he had more TDs than INTs.

We don't need 8 in the box. We have 52 in the box.

I'd rather see Troy Smith as well...

because while I don’t think he’ll ever be a good QB and will almost certainly lose more games than Carr and ensure us a higher draft pick.

Alex Smith -Is A Premium Back Up QB

Hi Folks, Here in U.K. They showed the game on national T.V. late into the night.l was not happy at the 7 -17 lead for the eagles. To make it worse my friend was at Candlestick,an Eagles supporter!!! l just switched the TV off ’cos l knew there was no way we gonna win,and all their usual fault penalties had started, and the 40 yard Nedney missed kick.

Here l blame the QB, ‘cos if the QB is on song everyone is on song, (has anybody noticed that Willis is also deteorating because of the negative effect in the camp)? Look Shaun Hill is shining. Its not about STATS its about getting the job done, mate!!! Just watched the highlight where Alex Smith lost the ball and a touchdown occurred.Like i’ve said before ALL NFL TEAMS KNOW THAT ALEX SMITH STRUGGLES UNDER PRESSURE.It seems he only responds when his job is on the line.

Well done FANS for BOOING,The othe problem is that Mike Singletary only responds to what people say is wrong when there’a a big reaction.Like RAYES issue, its now Alex Smith Issue. l blame ourselves as an organisation because WE PUT OURSELVES INTO THAT SITUATION BY NOT GETTING A VIABLE QB WHEN ALL NFL ANALYSTS TOLD US TO DO THAT!!!

We can’t fire SMITH Now, San Francisco 49ERS IS (0-5) Down. What hurts the most is that we’ve got the Players WHO CAN PLAY,but QB is not firing well. What a Quagmire we are in.The worst is how arrogant or ignorant we are,we were always believing that we will make it to the playoffs, how can we when our players are mentally losing confidence and the other teams are rating us as a team to beat?Lets get real.

Jed York is here in London, already preparing for the game against Broncos e.t.c. He was on TV saying that HE IS HAPPY WITH THE TEAM AND THE COACHES,and its just a matter of getting things right. So if JED YORK wasn’t there yesterday to see what went down personally, l don’t think anything is gonna change. So folks get ready for the LONG HAUL!!!!

You see QBs hit in the act of throwing often enough...

I’m a Smith detractor, but I can’t really get upset about that one. It was just garbage pass protection.

by asleepinSF on Oct 12, 2010 8:27 PM PDT up reply actions

it isn't just that he got hit in the act of throwing,

he threw it because he was about to get hit.

a good QB would have tucked the ball and taken the sack.

by these3words on Oct 13, 2010 3:41 PM PDT up reply actions

He knew that Davis was going to wiff on his block?

Okay, tuck the ball, take a sack. Now it’s 4th and 17 at midfield, under a minute left, and you’ve just used your last timeout.

Even if your conjecture was accurate (that he should have known he didn’t have time to get that ball off) taking a sack there is suicidal.

by Ronaldinho on Oct 13, 2010 4:18 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm beginning to realize that people who hate Alex Smith are just going to find any and every way to blame Smith for everything that happens to the 49ers

So what the defense gave up 31 points to the Chiefs! Alex Smith threw a pick!

So what David Baas hiked the ball over his head, he should have known Baas was going to hike it so high because Baas sucks and should have taken 5 big steps backward! Furthermore, he should have known that Rachal and Davis were going to whiff their blocks (it’s why they’re on the field, duh…) and run the ball out to the one yard line and taken a sack!

So what that Crabtree failed to catch the ball! He should have known that Crabby was a little rusty and wouldn’t catch the ball! He should have thrown it at the ground at Crabby’s feet instead of off his hands for a pick!

Trust me, learning english isn’t a waste of time. It is actually sort of useful.

by Dubs fan in Boston on Oct 13, 2010 5:26 PM PDT up reply actions

Alex had no idea Davis was about to whiff his block!

He saw a 4-man rush, looked downfield, saw an open man, made a quick throw right when he hit his back foot after a 3-step drop, perfect timing to release the ball, and then got hit in the middle of the throw. He wasn’t getting hit and then threw it, or about to get hit so he threw it away. He made a read, had a man open, trusted his o-line to make the proper blocks, and released the ball like he’s supposed to. If he holds that ball and takes a sack, people would be all over him for not getting the ball out, saying taking that sack cost us the game. As a former right tackle, if I had missed that block and my QB got hit and threw a pick because of it, I would place all the blame squarely on MY shoulders and would make sure my QB knew that and knew that I wouldn’t do it again so he could trust me again the next time and feel comfortable looking downfield and not worry about a 4-man rush… A FOUR-MAN RUSH, and a man gets through virtually untouched, and people are mad at Alex for that? He can’t block AND make the pass. I just don’t see how a lot of you don’t blame A Davis 100% for missing his assignment because to me, it is completely Davis’ fault. And I guarantee Mike Solari feels the same way as I do and has probably not let Davis hear the end of it since Sunday night.

by SanFranFan4Life on Oct 13, 2010 4:53 PM PDT up reply actions

hmm... i had been under the impression

that he threw it because he saw the guy running at him unblocked, and not because he actually had someone to throw to.

I watched the play a few times, and it is evident he has a receiver wide open over the middle of the field that would have put us inside the 20 yard line. He was going to fire the ball over the middle for a big play, but Davis got burned inside and Alex had already committed to the throw. His eyes were downfield, not on the rush. Granted, he probably should have tried to avoid the rush or take the sack, but that play is mostly on Davis. He played terribly in pass protection all day, especially on that play.

Mcnabb's a winning QB.

I think you have to question why we didn’t go after Mcnabb when we had the chance. You have winning QB’s and then you have QB’s who don’t know how to win. A guy like Peyton Manning takes all the pressure of a team on his shoulders and smiles. A guy like Alex Smith shies from the pressure and crumbles. I think Mcnabb has more of Manning in him then Smith does.
How many years do we wait on Smith to become a QB who won’t shoot the team in the foot and lose a game for them.

by Dukeston1 on Oct 11, 2010 7:52 PM PDT up reply actions

Bah.

This is simplistic tripe.

The notion that you can divide players up into the category of “winning” and “not winning” regardless of the team situation, coaching, and surrounding talents is absurd, and, quite frankly, moronic.

McNabb has a lower completion percentage than Smith does this year. He hasn’t looked very good. Over his career, of course, he’s much better than Smith. He’s also consistently been on good teams with good offensive lines, receivers, and (most of the time) running games.

You simply can’t separate QB performance from all of that stuff.

by Ronaldinho on Oct 12, 2010 12:35 AM PDT up reply actions

Are you high?

Exactly which Eagle team are you referring to with all the high caliber receiving threats? James Thrash? Freddie Mitchell? Hank Baskett? Come on. Non of those guys are or were pro bowlers. Even with a great QB under center. McNabb is unquestionalbly one of the top 5 underrated passes in the league. Stats or no stats, the only thing McNabb does year in and out is win!! You mean to tell me he barked at the Eagles FO for better weapons for the past 6 yrs because he had nothing better to do?
Or maybe you want to include that cry baby they got from us for only 1 1/2 seasons, who damn near destroyed the entire franchise including McNabb before even he was shipped off to Dallas? (Which for those keeping track wasn’t such a gorgeous marriage afterall.) I cryed from the rooftops that we should’ve gotten McNabb. And everyone thought I was nuts. How bought now?

Tell me, how has McNabb done when he's had a O.C. as terrible as Raye?

Oh, wait. He’s never had an O.C. that bad! Smith has had too.

When has McNabb ever had an O-line as bad as the one Smith had last year?

Oh, wait! He’s never had one that bad.

I’m not saying Smith is as good as McNabb. I’m saying that expecting McNabb to come to S.F. when the team is disfuctional and somehow make a big difference in the number of wins we get.

Is there any player on the 49ers who is playing up to his potential? Patrick WIllis doesn’t even look very good this year.

McNabb has been on very good teams for his entire career. He’s had one of the smartest offensive minds in the game as his coach.

Maybe we can find an example of a QB who played most of his career for someone else, and then went to Philly, and see what that tells us. Here’s an example

Michael Vick:
                Career 2010
comp% 54.1% 61.5%
YPA 6.7 8.3
INT% 2.8 0.0

That’s what being on a good offensive team does for a quarterback.

Give Smith 6.7% more points of completion percentage, another 1.4 yards per attempt, a shave a couple of points off his completion percentage … and he’s a really really good quarterback.

Does leading 14-13 in the final minute of a game, tied 22-22 in the final minute of the game, and down three in opponents’ territory with a minute left count as “having the chance to win the game?”

Not saying Smith is as good as McNabb, but still… McNabb played with one of the leagues’ top defenses for years. The Niners had a top defense last year, other than that (including this year) the defense has been pretty terrible.

Most of the time the defense is put in horrible defensive field position.

DUE TO SMITH’S turnovers. A QB that minimizes turnovers and capitalizes on big plays downfield, consistently, is a better option than Smith. I didn’t want Mcnabb, I was simply pointing out that McNabb never had the talent that Smith has NOW, and that mcnabb almost always had protection issues. So what point are you trying to make? it’s not like Mcnabb had NOTHING to do with philly’s success. Smith being in 3 of the 5 games this years means squat, none of them translated into a W, and I know it isn’t his fault. Don’t take away from mcnabb’s accomplishments though. What other QB has that many trips to a conference Championship. everyone crowning Peyton one of th ebest ever, but he doesn’t take pay cuts so he can keep more than two players on the defense, so it can improve for once. he is nothing more than the best regular season QB, but is heralded as far greater.

First of all, this year our defense has just been mediocre.

We’re 15th against the run. WTF? That was supposed to be a strength this year.

Second of all, dude, c’mon, there is a limit to how much you can blame Smith for, and our D’s ability to come up small in big moments is way past it.

The Atlanta game – giving up 17 straight snaps in a crucial situation – is, unfortunately, all too typical for this defense. We can’t get a stop when it counts and you can’t blame Smith for that.

by Ronaldinho on Oct 15, 2010 9:03 AM PDT up reply actions

Most of the time the defense is put in horrible defensive field position.

DUE TO SMITH’S turnovers.

I’m curious to know your defintion of “put in horrible defensive positions.” I’m wondering cuz Smith has only turned the ball over on our side of the field without creating a turnover twice this year. He’s had quite a few picks at the opponents’ 30 yard line, and two inside the opponents’ 20 yard line. That’s two possessions out of 30+. Sorry, the defense sucking isn’t Smith’s fault, it’s their own.

Smith being in 3 of the 5 games this years means squat, none of them translated into a W, and I know it isn’t his fault.

I must be confused here. I thought you were lauding McNabb for his team “always being in the game at the end.”

Don’t take away from mcnabb’s accomplishments though. What other QB has that many trips to a conference Championship.

Where did I discount this, I even said “Not saying Smith is as good as McNabb…” Did you even read what I wrote?

everyone crowning Peyton one of th ebest ever, but he doesn’t take pay cuts so he can keep more than two players on the defense, so it can improve for once.

And yet, some how they grab Austin Collie and Piere Garcon (for nothing) who immediately turn into two of the best receivers in the game. He makes every other player on the field with him immediately better. How much are they paying Bob Sanders to continually have surgery? You saying they’re not paying Matthis and Freeny enough? You’re saying that since they’ve only been to the super bowl twice in four years isn’t enough? You’re the only one complaining here.

Agreed

It all comes back to, the team needs to quit shooting itself in the foot. A myriad of items seem to show up every game day. Offensive line troubles, fumbling issues, interceptions. The niners drive down the field to tie the game then leave too much time for their opponents to drive down for a tiebreaking fg. A key interception at the end, then lose the ball on a fumble. This is a team issue. I think a lot of it has to come back on your leaders. I love coach singletery but…he is a great position coach, a horrible x and o guy.

Who cares at this point?

There’s no QB on this roster that is the answer for 2011 and beyond. If the team goes with a QB change, it’s pointless unless Nate Davis is promoted (and he’s probably about as ready to be the starter as Trent Dilfer). David Carr isn’t going to be a long term answer, nor is Troy Smith.

Also, Nate Clements was saved a second straight appearance on the goat list, thankfully LeSean McCoy fell down before the first down. Why Clements would bite on a fake to the sideline on that play is absolutely absurd. I hate this team right now, it feels like I’m rooting for a cursed franchise. Now I have to start hoping for a 5-game winning streak. See you guys at the draft.

There’s no QB on this roster that is the answer for 2011 and beyond.

This is the one major thing I’ve been complaining about the most. The Niners’ FO/staff have done NOTHING to bolster the QB position for this team. And in a league that centers around QB play, that is a cardinal sin. Alex Smith is terrible. You can pretty much count on him for 3 turnovers a game…which is abysmal. But sadly, we have no one else worth starting on our roster.

God, I’m so depressed over this team. With no competant QB on this team, we’re a good three years away from being competitive if we have to build through the draft (which is necessary).

Not mad... Just disappointed.

Many of us here at NinersNation were under the impression that after tonight we’d be 0-5 but the drama entailed within the last 60 minutes of play was palpable.

What we saw tonight was typical Alex Smith. To play the way he played just prior to the TD leading drive was exactly what he is. Inconsistent.

Every time we are all ready to tar and feather him – he responds in a slightly positive way. In the end, he is what he is and we have no other option but him as our QB. To assume that David Carr will be able to produce under these circumstances is just that, an assumption. Until the coaching staff stand up, piss into the wind and go in a new direction we can really only go in 1 of 3 ways.

cardinals won with max hall

troy smith, david carr, and nate davis have more nfl experience then max hall. if the cards can win with that then niners can win with any qb that we have.

when alex gave the ball away I was really dejected and wanted him cut that minute. but he threw that series away after that but came back and threw some crazy passes to get a td.

but that is not the normal alex smith. i dont think that alex will ever be consistent, he will always be up then down, up then down. and niners have proved they can not win like that. take away the bone head move of running backwards with the ball then handing it to the eagles i do think alex showed improvement. i like that the niners came out with the spread offense. i love that crabtree had i believe his first 100 yard game. what bothered me the most was how alex reacted after he fumbled the ball. he seemed on that series that followed that he did not give a crap. he seemed like that until sing yelled at him and then he played like he did not give a crap and showed everything that he had. last positive was that alex seemed to have support of vernon and gore. I think that alex has one or two more games to show us he can improve.

by HUNGRY HUNTER on Oct 10, 2010 10:58 PM PDT up reply actions

Overall it was an Alex smith game

He had enough plays to look like he was doing his job but as always he continued to make mistakes when we really really needed him to perform. Also at the one point where the crowd was booing him constantly, he had 3 straight incomplete passess. these were made when the pressure was not strong, they were not really thrown well and some were not thrown to any particular player. It looked like Alex Smith was throwing a fit and telling the fans to F off honestly. He had 3 touchdowns, but at the same time he completely self destructed and had a stupid fumble/sack that gave the eagles that game. This in my opinion was one of his worst performance if not his worst performance and I personally believe that it shows that Smith does not have the ability to play well enough or deal with the pressure that the NFL brings. Smith lost that game for the niners, yes Gore helped, but smith directly lost us several scores and gave the eagles a score. He is not a starting caliber QB he needs to not start any longer we need a new QB some way and some how because smiths horrible play is not winning any games.

by b4huxley on Oct 10, 2010 8:54 PM PDT reply actions

So his fumble alone gave the Eagles the game?

What about Gore’s TWO fumbles in Eagles territory? What about Joe Nedney’s missed field goal? Too many mistakes throughout the team to blame it all on Smith.

Agreed.

I was listening to KNBR a little bit after the game (God knows why I would do that) and Damon Bruce entirely blamed Smith. No mention of the field goals (as far as I heard) and definitely nothing about Gore. Even Frank himself admitted that it wasn’t Alex’s fault, and that the whole team needed to help him out.

Exactly, but if you look up and down the post, everyone blames Alex. People want instant results, what happened to the times where you can build your team…people don’t realize this is only Alex’s second starting season since his rookie year. Dude is only 25. But hey, blame the qb, lets fire everyone and continue with our losing ways….cuz thats what the fans want. (apparently)

by rocdateam on Oct 10, 2010 9:50 PM PDT up reply actions

Actually you can blame Smith and Gore in this game.

I was looking at how Gore runs and how McCoy runs… Gore heads in a certain direction and that’s it. McCoy moves, avoids tackles. Also, Gore fumbles. Put in Dixon and Westbrook and let’s see how they do. When it is all Smith and Gore it is difficult to win. have to have variations in the backfield

And survey says...........!

It’s Alex. Because no one else on that team has had more opportunities and more excuses made for his poor peformance than Smith. Frank has had 1 bad 1/2, whereas Smith can’t seem to get out of his own way EVERY GAME! People aroud NN are tired of listening and waiting to “re-build”. And they ae sick of listening to ppl making newer excuses for Alex simply not getting the job done!
Look at the Cards. They saw their former #1 QB wasn’t cutting it after what…3 yrs. So, they sent him packing. Got another guy in his place that some figured wasn’t wortht a hill of beans. But, they got him non the less. And when he didn’t perform, they went with an undrafted rookie in order to fill the need. Yes, he got lucky with the win. But, by golly, the FO amde that choice in a heartbeat because they KNEW it needed to be done. For the betterment of the TEAM. Not to stroke some clowns ego.

He did not lose the game, the team lost the game. He had over 300 yards, 64% completion ,rate 3 touchdowns, and 2 ints…one as he got hit at the end of the game, and a fumble where he had no blocking. The defense did not play great and frank gave away the ball twice. If you guys want to get rid of Alex we might as well get rid of Singletary and hire all new coaches along with a rookie quarterback first round pick next year and remain in a rebuilding state for the next 10 year years.

What kind of success has Romo had besides being a choke artist just like Smith? Go to the playoffs? Meanwhile dallas have won 1 game this year. How many teams make it to the playoffs, with an average quarterback? I bet dallas fans have a Romo fan post, wishing they bring Aikman out of retirement. Brees won the superbowl last year…so 1 point for that.

Tony Romo's Career Stats

2009-2010: 63.1%, 4483 yards, 26 TDs, 9 INTs (11-5 record)
2009-2008: 61.3%, 3448 yards, 26 TDs, 14 INTs (9-7)
2008-2007: 64.4%, 4211 yards, 36 TDs, 19 INTs (13-3)

3 very good, Pro Bowl years, three winning records, two division titles. Tony Romo is head and shoulders (and every other body part you want to add in) above Alex Smith and gets the benefit of the doubt after a 3 turnover game…

I would like to see the niners draft a QB in the first round no matter what happens this season (except for the highly improbable scenario that we somehow make the playoffs). Alex Smith has the talent to be an NFL quarterback, but I feel that he’s been damaged beyond repair by how he was handled since he was drafted, and now he simply has too much baggage to succeed here, and perhaps anywhere. I would like for the Niners to let Carr or Smith finish out the rest of the season, draft a new QB in 2011 and then try to find a coach that can really groom the new QB as he learns the system (and ostensibly starts from the getgo). Maybe go after a college coach. (I would love to see what Chip Kelly could do as an offensive coordinator in the NFL, but I just don’t see him leaving Oregon just when it is starting to become a juggernaut.)

The other thing to consider is that most of the skill players on offense and defense are quite young, so they would be able to endure the growing pains of dealing with a new QB. Gore is the only real concern as he is nearing the RB age wall, and wouldn’t be able to contribute much once the new QB became comfortable (ostensibly during his 2nd year in the leauge). While I hate to suggest it because of the terrible short-term pain it would bring, I think think the smart thing to do would be to try to get some draft picks or young talent for Frank Gore. Gore’s value will never be higher than it is right now, and we are not going to be contending for anything anytime soon. (I am of the belief that we would not be able to contend with a rookie QB next season no matter how good the rest of the team plays, which is why I feel trading Gore is the best move).

Smith threw them some really tight balls. Amazing throws actually. Good to see MJ and Smith when he’s calling the plays in the 2 minute, hurry-up, situations call their numbers more often.

Gore is a stud, and deserves to end his last few years as a winner. I would hate to see him go, but we may be in rebuild mode the way the season is going so far. I just dont wanna give up on this team this early…but 0-5 is effing depressing.

Not so fast

Alex Smith is evidence (and hardly the only evidence) that drafting a QB in the 1st round is a big gamble, like one of his trademark desperation passes. Smith needs to be replaced, not with a high-priced hot-shot who might someday learn to play in the NFL, but with a competent quarterback who can deliver the ball to our playmakers and minimize turnovers.

That may be true

But my idea is not to go after “a really good QB,” but to go after a competent QB and put the 1st-round pick to use on a less-risky player. Then maybe you draft a QB in a later round who turns out to have been underestimated. The Niners have enough talent to win with a QB who is not a star.

Not at all

My point is that if you draft a QB in the 3rd round and he sucks, it’s a lot easier to get rid of him and try someone else. If you take one in the 1st round, you’ve guaranteed him a tidy sum to go along with his great expectations. Even if you admit your mistake and write off that investment (the Smith experience shows how difficult that is), the salary cap hit you take (assuming the salary cap lasts) is going to hurt you. That’s what I mean when I say its risky to draft a QB early.

by silverjay on Oct 11, 2010 2:54 PM PDT up reply actions

Well, let's be honest about some of the reasons Smith has been hard to move on from ...

He’s been in some truly horrible situations both surrounding talent and coachingwise.

(I mean, honestly, he’s QB’d under the two worst OC’s I’ve ever seen. Guys who just don’t see to have the capability to do the job competently. Twice. I’ve watched a lot of NFL football and never seen OCs as clueless as two of the guys Smith has played under.)

He’s suffered from injuries.

And every so often he puts it together and looks really really good. The two late TD drives yesterday are the sort of thing that makes you want to believe in a young QB. ANd this isn’t the first time he’s put together a couple of great-looking drives in a game.

WIth competent coaching, and a reasonable baseline of talent surrounding the QB, it’s much easier to come to a relatively-quick evaluation. Smith is a somewhat enigmatic player to evaluate anyway, but given the circumstances, it’s be very difficult to make sense of him.

by Ronaldinho on Oct 11, 2010 3:01 PM PDT up reply actions

OK

But the circumstances are what they are. Replacing Smith with the latest college star won’t change them. And if those problems are fixed, I still believe we don’t need a hot-shot QB to win.

Regarding the talent that surrounds him, I note that Brandon Lloyd, now catching passes from Kyle Orton, currently leads the NFL: in receiving yards. Smith had me thinking Lloyd was no good.

Well, let’s be honest: how much was Lloyd in the game when Smith was playing?

You blaming Smith for Lloyd strikes me as, well, borderline absurd. It’s pathological. “There’s a problem, it must be the QB.”

Lloyd was a Niner in three years. 2003, 2004, 2005.

Smith was only the team’s QB for HALF of one of those seasons. He was a rookie who everybody agrees was thrown to the wolves too soon halfway through the 2005 season.

Smith had you thinking Lloyd was no good? Really? You want to blame Smith for that?

In what universe does that make sense?

by asleepinSF on Oct 11, 2010 12:56 AM PDT up reply actions

It's a matter of risk vs. reward

As we have all seen, when a team drafts a QB early in the 1st round, he will ask for and receive a very expensive, long-term contract. Then, if he is a flop, the team will be stuck with him and that contract for a long period. They will lose the opportunity to draft a player that is a better bet to make a positive impact in a shorter time. Then they may miss good opportunities to get a journeyman QB. As I said above, I believe that’s all the Niners need, not the next Peyton Manning or Tom Brady.

When the Patriots drafted Brady, they were very lucky, no question. But if they hadn’t been lucky, no one would even remember him and maybe they would have formed a successful team around someone else. But drafting Smith has left the Niners in poor shape for years. He will be remembered for the wrong reasons.

by these3words on Oct 12, 2010 6:42 PM PDT up reply actions

Well, it's clear that Rodgers would have been a better pick -

- but it’s also hard to imagine he would have had much success with the nonsense that’s been going on here in terms of talent, coaching, etc.

And that, ultimately, its the biggest defense of Smith’s play. Rodgers is a top five QB in the league right now. He’s really, really good. And yet it’s hard to imagine that he would have had any meaning success at all in S.F. with Nolan, Sing, Raye, Hostler, etc.

So long as you have a situation where a top-five QB would be a failure playing for your team, you should hesitate before blaming the QB for your problems. I don’t think Smith is the solution, but people’s willingness to throw him under the bus strikes me as somewhat delusional.

We’re not better QB play away from being a good team. Or, rather, maybe we are – because you can’t have good QB play unless the rest of your offense is functioning on a competent level.

You've seen what happens

They drafted A. Smith #1 in 2005. Naturally, they gave him the most generous contract anyone received that year. Because of that investment and because he shows “promise” (like any high draft choice), he is still around. He is still our starter. We still have no viable option to replace him.

Besides, how long do you think we have to keep this team together? Will Gore still be around in 4 years? Justin Smith? Franklin? I’d like to get a tested QB, if possible, who can take the reins and lead the team to the postseason. Jeff Garcia? Maybe Favre will be looking for a new team for his annual unretirement. :D

Unreasonable haste is the direct road to error.--Moliere

by silverjay on Oct 11, 2010 11:57 AM PDT up reply actions

The problem is -

It’s pretty hard to get a “tested” QB who’s actually any good.

Starting-caliber QBs change teams very rarely. A smart QB knows that his success depends a lot on his system, and so is going to be very hestiant to change teams, even for more money.

Pretty much this only happens when a player isn’t starting for his team – Matt Cassel, Drew Brees.

Beyond that, you’re generally bringing in a backup-quality QB. There are occasional exceptions (McNabb last year) but even then, well, look at McNabb’s stats this year. He’s better than Smith in INTs, but worse in compeltion percentage – but a substantial margin. (And he didn’t have three games of incompetent OC dragging him down, either).

Jeff Garcia – who I thought got a raw deal when he was playing for us, because he wasn’t as good as Montana or Young – will have been riding the pine for two seasons by next year. A year ago, he wasn’t good enough to be the Raiders’ backup. He’s out of the league. I think it’s a safe assumption to say that, at this point, he’s not an upgrade over Smith.

by Ronaldinho on Oct 11, 2010 1:04 PM PDT up reply actions

Not so sure

Garcia, who BTW, like Kurt Warner, Warren Moon, and Tony Romo, was undrafted, isn’t exactly “riding the pine.” He’s starting in the UFL, along with Daunte Culpepper. But those are just examples. I say look for one of those guys who might still have something left in his kit bag, and while you squeeze the last few years out of him, draft a QB in the 2nd or 3rd round whom you can bring along until he’s ready to start. In other words, don’t pile all your roulette chips on #11. Hedge your bets.

It’s not so much that Smith needs to be upgraded. He’s got plenty of talent when he’s not throwing away the game with his panic attacks. The Niners just need someone who can play with a clear head and avoid game-losing errors.

Simply disgusting performance

By the fans. I was at this game and when they started a “we want car” chant I was in utter disgust. Once A. Smith put together a TD drive all that stopped, matter a fact it stopped right after a big completion to Zeigler. Smith surely shut the haters up ( atleast till the final interception of the game), but those last plays where solely on the line did u see the protection he was getting. Not even a second to throw… Gore had a terrible performance. The defense was superb they had critical stops and kept us in the game. Alex Smith wasn’t the reason we lost that game, he surely was part of the reason but the blame doesn’t only fall on his shoulders. Gore, the LOLine, Turnovers, Playcalling, and penalties killed our day aswell. Smith was the one scoring the TDs lest we forget. Also to fellow fans trash talking before, and during the game, YOU DON’T SMACK TALK WHEN YOU ARE 0-4 Only when provoked but to be walking around cursing eagle fans waving instigating fingers in peoples faces, that’s no way to behave yourself anywhere.
Let’s have some class and back our QB for once. Joe wouldn’t have survived in the situation we put Smith in, so let’s have a bit of confidence and not join the sheeple the first chance we get to burn someone at the stake.

I don't blame Smith completely for this one.

There is plenty of blame to spread around, between Nedney’s missed FG, Gore’s fumbles and the multitude of penalties. But notwithstanding Alex’s game ending interception, his other TO’s were self-inflicted. He wasn’t touched on his fumble until he was finally chased down, sure he faced pressure but he scurried out of the pocket as if it was on fire. His first interception was either a bad read or a terrible throw: he thought he had single coverage and fired a deep ball to Ginn that ended up being catcheable only by the defense. I blame him for those turnovers. And frankly, he has had plenty of chances to show that he can win ballgames for this franchise, and time and time again he falls short. Smith has the talent to play QB, but for whatever reason I think he has collected too much baggage struggling in his early years and has suffered a massive hit to his self-confidence, which can destroy even the most talented QB’s career.

I think that a reboot is in order for this franchise. Alex has shown that he cannot be a consistent starter for this team, and I believe it is time to search for a new one. In our situation, I believe we would be better served by finding a NFL ready QB, and those types usually go early in the first round.

agree

he does not have confidence, he got really raddled after he made that bone head move. the series after that play he played like he did not want to play, then on the next series he played like he never played before making good throw after good throw. a team can not win like that. this consistency talk this offseason was a bunch of bs. the offense that was run at the end of last year was more of a spread offense but the niners went back to this two play call bs to start the season. today they seemed to mix it up with the spread offense again. i duno but it looks like the niners will have a top ten draft pick in 2011.

he thought he had single coverage and fired a deep ball to Ginn that ended up being catcheable only by the defense.

He did have single coverage. It’s not like he made a read error. He read that he had Ginn 1-1 on go route. Fact is, Ginn is not Randy Moss. He doesn’t get himself turned around looking for the ball in time and doesn’t have the body control to come back for it. It’s why Ginn was available for a 5th rounder instead of a 1,300 yard receiver in Miami. I also think Alex underestimated Ginn’s speed a bit (see the later throw to Morgan when Ginn was wide open for a TD later). Once they develop a bit of a rapport, Ginn should be a pretty lethal weapon.

Fact is, our entire team has pretty much sucked for a while. Right now, everybody’s playing tight because of the preseason expectations, the coaching mentality (seems to be “don’t lose the game” on offense, which is a recipe for the exact opposite), and the losing streak. We have the talent in place that once it breaks (hopefully against Oakland), it should break big and start a good streak. Of course, if it doesn’t break soon enough, the season’s over.

Trust me, learning english isn’t a waste of time. It is actually sort of useful.

Montana could roll away from pressure, find receivers, and...

hit them on the move. Alex Smith usually can’t do that. Montana didn’t start his career with spectacular pass protection, either. When Smith’s best game in a while reminds you of Steve De Berg, there’s nothing you can have confidence in, really. I wouldn’t have chanted for Carr, of course, because I have no reason to expect a better result from that substitution. As for the rest, stadiums are always full of obnoxious drunks. Most people are idiots. What can you do?

by asleepinSF on Oct 11, 2010 1:19 AM PDT up reply actions

Smith consistently makes boneheaded plays

Like dropping the ball when trying to switch hands. Or his first INT which was a hit and hope. He plays well at times when the pressure is off, like the end of the game today when we were already almost out of it, but he’s shown that in the past, like last year when he racked up big passing numbers in 20 point losses on a couple occasions.

The point is is that he is not a natural leader, and he is not the type that thrives under pressure. That being said, it’s pointless to bench him now, because what we have on the bench probably cannot even perform up to the level that Smith is playing at currently. Change for the sake of change is never good logic. Keep Smith in the lineup until the end of this year, hopefully he gets it turned around, and maybe by then we’ll be in position to draft a real QB.

Start Alex Smith Week 6 and for the rest of the year

I really admire Smith’s bravado for sticking up for himself on the sidelines (especially with Singletary screaming in his face) then returning to the game to lead two touchdown drives. He could have taken his lumps, given up and called it quits but he didn’t. Smith still has the desire to win and that’s crucial at a time like this. Right now, I don’t think benching Smith is the way to go when our alternatives are David Carr or Troy Smith. Coach Sing could have took the easy way out and scapegoated Smith but he didn’t, he put him back in there and I respect that. Coach Sing is all in with Smith, his job depends on it and so does our season so it’s time for us to stop the bashing and get behind our QB. We have no other alternative until the end of the regular season anyway, accept it Niners fans. I would be very surprised and very disappointed if tomorrow they announce David Carr or Troy Smith as the starter. Hopefully tonight’s game serves as a huge wake up call for Alex and he gets it together for next Sunday. I honestly thought that the fumble play would be the last of Smith’s 49ers career the way the crowd was ripping into him. I understand everyone’s frustration (believe me I am frustrated) but the “We Want Carr” chants were utterly disrespectful and embarrassing to our franchise, the fans and our players. Let’s get behind our QB and our team, not in front of them.

Davis would be too raw to succeed so we’d be calling the season a total loss at that point.

Carr simply isn’t the answer. No debate is necessary.

We should live or die with Smith until season’s end and then, depending on the results, act accordingly. If he gets us to a winning season and the playoffs AND plays well then we keep him another year but if not, dump him.

You can see moments of good play from smith. I believe if he had a good coaching staff around him he could compete. Singeltary is a bad coach and he needs to go. Was the coach smart in not hiring any coaches around him with enough experience to replace him. I think not he just did no t want anyone to question his system the way he wanted to run this team. I don’t feel like there is much change from Raye to Johnson to be quite honest. It has nothing to do with Sing (he seems like a geat HC)… it’s the coaches who are surrounding him… well some of them. I don't blame Smith at all for the final INT.

He was hit as he threw. People blaming him for that INT don’t know football.

And yet, wow, Smith is frustrating to watch. That fumble was a dumb, dumb play.

But so much of this game was just so damn frustrating. Why can’t this team put it together in any meaningful form?

Gore was abysmal. 2.9 YPA and two fumbles? Seriously? It seems like in every game where Smith plays well enough to eek out a victory, somebody else is there to screw it up. Of course, it’s not like Smith plays well enough to win every week … but this is the third game this year where we’ve had an unacceptable number or errors from players not named Smith.

(Not trying to exonerate Smith here, who’s certainly made his share of mistakes. And a QB who only plays well enough to give his team a chance to win in 3 out of 5 games is not getting it done. But THe reality is Smith played well enough to win today, like he did last week. Barely. And the rest of the team coughed up a key failure).

Again, though, I have to point a finger at the coaching. Rachal illegal man downfield TWICE in one game? WTF? Why is there always somebody making stupid, stupid plays on this team?

We’re better than this. Smith is better than this. Gore is better than this. THe f-ing o-line is better than this. The defense is better than this.

Argh.

But I guess this this is the Alex Smith discussion, this is my main point:

This team has so many problems that go so much deeper than Smith that it’s really really hard to say “oh, replace him and things will be fine.” I mean, weren’t we supposed to be a good runnign team? WTF?

And the defense was, meh. At least they weren’t terrible today.

Bleah.

by Delmuir on Oct 11, 2010 3:26 AM PDT up reply actions

Wait a second here. It was THIRD down.

THere is, what, under a minute left.

It’s third and ten. You take a sake there and its 4th and 16. Really, the game’s over.

You have one timeout.

You’ve got 44 yards to go.

You want your QB to try to make a play there. You need your QB to try to make a play there.

The line needs to give the QB a chance to make a play.

That is the exact opposite of a “take the damn sack for goodness sakes” situation.

On first or second down, maybe. Maybe. But third? Are you kidding me?

The QB’s got to try to make a play there. Absolutely the right thing to do.

Now, maybe should he react better to the pressure? Sure. Would you like your QB to have a better pocket awareness, sure. But saying your QB should be able to avoid the rush on 3rd in ten when everybody knows he’s got to throw ….

SOrry, you’re just wrong here. You getting the down wrong is just symptomatic of your larger misunderstanding of the situation.

by Ronaldinho on Oct 11, 2010 9:48 AM PDT up reply actions

He had Ziggy open on a deep in for the first down.

He got hit as he stepped up to throw it immediately after hitting his back foot, leading the ball to come out slow, by which time Ziggy was well past the pass. Alex Smith made the right read, tried to deliver the ball… only Anthony Davis brainfarted and blocked nobody. Watch the replay. (Play starts at 3:53). The DT and DE stunt and Davis completely whiffs on the DT. If he makes that block, Smith delivers a dart and we’re maybe talking about a 49ers victory today.

But, you’re right. The QB threw the INT, so it must be all the QB’s fault. Plus the team lost, so it must be entirely the QBs fault.

QB is the most important position on the field ...

so it’s easy to see why fans who don’t really understand football blame the QB whenever the team loses.

And saying that INT wasn’t Smith’s fault doesn’t mean that he’s played well this season. He certainly hasn’t. We need better play from the QB position.

But if he could put up numbers like he did yesterday, we’d win more often than not if the rest of the team was competent.

by Ronaldinho on Oct 11, 2010 1:18 PM PDT up reply actions

If you look at the play and the coverage the ball came out a split second too late.

He gets that ball to the area on time and he doesn’t get sacked. I have a problem with all of these assessments, that aren’t being thoroughly analyzed. He could have taken a sack, but the line is young and the pass protection broke down to quickly for a 4 man rush.

Sing is no dumber or smarter a HC if Clements doesn’t fumble and/or Smith makes one less mistake yesterday. Watch the replay of the second one

There was a simple 4 man rush, zero blitzers on that side. He should certainly be expecting at least half a second. He made his read, needed/wanted to go to the right side of the field, rolling to his left was going to take that throw away. On a four man rush, the DT basically got to Smith unimpeded.

I've seen it several times

First was a blitz, second was a 4-man rush.
Both times pressure came from the right side.

Everyone knew they were going to go after Chilo on those plays.
There are two things you can do in that situation:
1. Spike the ball on 1st down to give Chilo a breather and let him know what’s about to happen.
2. Leave an extra blocker on the right side and get rid of the ball quickly.

If I recall....

They were running up to spike the ball on first, but a philly safety was injured after getting trucked by Davis. So, basically, you’re saying that the right side of the line is completely untrustworthy and Franky and/or VD should be kept in when Smith might need 3 seconds? And it was Davis who got beat, not Rachal. Alex tried to get rid of the ball quickly… he couldn’t because a DT had a free run at him.

And the first play was a blitz, with a screen called. Alex just didn’t quite loft the pass enough. Sigh… In that case, Rachal is supposed to whiff on his block and get out for the screen.

Instead of that, he’s supposed to expect his linemen to suck donkey balls, watch the pass rush instead of his receiver, and take a sack or throw the ball away from inside the pocket on 3rd & 10 with 40 seconds left and the game on the line?

But, of course, it wasn't "repeatedly" happening -

When you call a hot route and the opposing team isn't blitzing you often are throwing straight into coverage.

A tremendous amount of INTs happen in that situation because the hot route only works when there isn’t a LB covering the short route.

Suggesting that the team should have called a hot route despite the absence of a blitz is madness.

Furthermore, it’s 3rd and 10, under a minute left, and we have one timeout. A short completion anywhere but the sidelines forces us to burn a timeout and make scoring much, much more difficult. But of course hot routes aren’t designed to go to the sidelines because that takes longer to develop.

So, uh … no.

Smith should finish the season.

Yes, the fumble was horrible. But…

Really, it’s not all Smith’s fault. The TEAM needs to get together and execute. And I am sure Alex Smith is capable of leading them.

Seriously, when the stadium was chanting that “WE WANT CARR” crap, I was so annoyed.

Then I saw him talking to Singletary and I don’t know what he said so that he could stay in the game, but you could see the intensity on his face, showing how much he wanted to finish the game, show everyone what he’s got. And you know what? He came back from that with two TD passes. I swear, I don’t know how anyone can come back after having thousands of people chanting in unison for you to gtfo.

He CAN be that guy. This team just needs to get together and play better. It’s annoying how he’s always the scapegoat :/.

He still sucks but he’s made some plays here and there.

Walker is injured and Bowman rarely plays (plus he’s a rookie).

about al’s damning play. it’s been bad.
and it’s tough to support him when he puts us in position to lose every single game. that’s where i stand (and i think you, too)- he’s on the short list of losers every week.

what’s most frustrating about his play, is that it distracts us from the fact that, yes- our OL is not improved this year, our defense is a shell of itself, we have rookies giving up TD plays, we have vets making dumb mistakes, and i recall that many of us were pointing at crabtree for some of the blame on the week 1 INTs. walker’s fumble in NO made the difference- injured or not, that was a red zone gaff. Nedney missed a chip shot…in a 3 point loss. we’ve fired an OC and STILL can’t get westbrook into the game.

it’s not on one guy. when the org can stop flubbing all aspects of managing the games, and Al is still bad….then we can say it’s on one guy.

Sure.

It’s really hard to succeed in the NFL without a top-10 QB. It can happen, but it’s rare. That’s the most important position on the field and if you have a below-average player there (as we do) you’re in a hole.

The problem is I haven’t heard anybody offer a meaningful strategy to actually solve the problem. Should have gotten McNabb? He’s not a top-10 QB right now, on Washington. How do you think he’d be with our disfunctional team. Vick won’t be changing teams this offseason, because he’s not an idiot. Draft? Who? And what’s your plan for the 1-2 years it’ll take to get that QB ready?

I understand wanting to upgrade our QB position. What I haven’t heard from anybody is a realistic way to do so.

Getting rid of Smith is not a strategy for improving our team. Bringing in a better player is. The question is, how do we do that?

by Ronaldinho on Oct 13, 2010 9:52 AM PDT up reply actions

Exactly.

Are we supposed to cut the best QB that we currently have on our roster with no one in line to replace him? The sad truth is that Smith is the best QB option that we have at the moment, so we just need to stick with him for this season and beyond until we find someone better to replace him. And when I say someone better, I am not referring to an unproven rookie QB from the draft. I want to see us draft a QB this year in the early rounds, but I don’t want to see that rookie QB be thrown into a horrible situation where he HAS to start because we have no one else on the roster at QB. Unfortunately, we are stuck with Alex for the time being. Here’s to hoping we find someone better to take over for us!

by SanFranFan4Life on Oct 13, 2010 1:02 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah.

I want to see us a draft a QB in the first two rounds this year, provided there’s a good candidate (I haven’t been following college FB that closely this year, so couldn’t tell you).

But …

Make whomever we draft earn the starting spot (the way Smith didn’t have to) by making him rip it out of Smith’s fingers in training camp/practice/etc.

I'm not asking for him to be replaced NOW

"I'm just like you, but 10 times better"

by SportsChicken on Oct 13, 2010 3:24 PM PDT up reply actions

I would be all for that.

If there is a veteran QB that we can acquire in the off-season who is an upgrade over Smith at QB, we better jump all over that. Even then, if we can resign Smith to a backup-salary contract and keep him as our #2 or #3 QB, why not do it? We would have to pay someone else about the same amount of money anyways, and I think Smith would be a good backup to have. At least that way he wouldn’t go to the Seahawks and give up even more of our secrets to Cheat Carroll! But, if there are younger guys with more potential that we want to keep on our roster, then we probably need to let Smith go to make room for them. And no, I’m not speaking of Nate Davis when I say “younger guys with more potential”. If Nate Davis was as good as many on here believe he is, then he would have never made it past waivers to our practice squad! So many teams are constantly looking for the answer at QB, and if he was it or seemed like he could be it, someone would’ve grabbed him, but no one did, so…

I have been replying to this:

You said:

But he can be bounced in the offseason in favor of a veteran that can start until the rookie is ready.

Then I replied:

I would be all for that. If there is a veteran QB that we can acquire in the off-season who is an upgrade over Smith at QB, we better jump all over that.

So you asked:

Why does he have to be an upgrade over Smith?

To which I replied:

He would have to be an upgrade because if he’s not an upgrade he’s either equal to or less than Alex Smith, which means we might as well just stick with Smith. Why would you replace a player with anything but an upgrade? It doesn’t make sense to replace him with someone who is just as good or worse, so imo we need to stick with Smith until we find an upgrade, either via FA, trade or the draft.

Then the comment you made that confuses me is this:

huh? You’re replacing Smith with a ROOKIE QB

Pay attention.

The Veteran (or Smith) just starts until he’s ready and "mentors" him.

I was never talking about replacing Smith with a ROOKIE QB. I was talking about a VETERAN. Draft a rookie, but if there is no other veteran out there that is an upgrade over Smith, then why bring someone in who has no knowledge of the coaching staff, playbook, etc., instead of keeping Smith, who knows the system already and can help teach it to the rookie? This has always been my point. I’ve been speaking to your point about a veteran QB.

I understand exactly what you were saying. I didn’t misinterpret. I just disagree that we should replace Smith with ANY veteran QB. I would only want to see him replaced with an UPGRADE. I have not argued any other point you’ve made. I think you’re the one that has misinterpreted what I have been saying.

by SanFranFan4Life on Oct 15, 2010 2:44 PM PDT up reply actions

I would say a veteran might be a better option

Because of the history with Smith.
It would be a little hard for Smith to suddenly go from the position where he is now (captain) to merely being a lame duck.

Look at the schedule. We’ve played 3 of our 5 toughest games already (at SEA, at ATL, vs NO) and two of our next 5 toughest (at KC, vs PHI). We’ve lost three close games, and have gotten plenty of bad breaks in each of them. We’re starting two rookie offensive linemen and missing our starting center, and the OL has been our biggest problem (zero run blocking and shoddy pass blocking). I see a 10-15 pick at worst. Unless, of course, Smith is benched in favor of Crappy option #1 or Crappy option #2.

May as well start Carr next week: he had a good game for the Giants against the Raiders last season when he came in for Eli Manning in the first half and completed a first-rate whooping of the Silver and Black (admittedly, they had Jamarcus back there steenking it up), so he knows how to beat them, at least. We all know Alex is not the future

but i feel like the best thing for this team to do is to keep him in. the offense needs to change it’s approach…i.e. constantly running gore into a wall isn’t exactly doing alex any favors. open the game up a bit, and use the weapons around him. Westbrook as a second back? work in some wildcat plays with troy smith as the QB. throw in the occasional single back with dixon in there.

teams are having no troubles stacking our predictable run plays, and leaving alex to force the issue on 2nd or 3rd and long.

benefit to this is, when the next guy takes over for alex, there will be a much more dynamic offense in place, and there’d be less of a chance that he fails too.

by smileyman on Oct 13, 2010 12:12 AM PDT up reply actions

You've got it wrong

Check the play-by-play.

VD has a catch on the last drive where the team was running up to spike the ball and he was dancing, but a Philly player was injured forcing Philly to use a TO. The drive before the 2 minute warning started at Philly’s 36 and Davis caught zero passes. VD dancing while the rest of his team catches up isn’t a big deal. It would have been if he didn’t get lined up properly, but in the end it wasn’t a factor at all.

True...

due to the injury, it wasn’t a factor, and it really wasn’t a big deal at all in the first place. But I personally just didn’t like seeing VD celebrating when we were behind trying to make a comeback. There was nothing to celebrate at that point because we were losing. Even if we were winning, we hadn’t won yet. It should have been all business at that point. You don’t see a player on the Colts celebrate one big catch from Peyton when trying to drive FTW, unless that big catch resulted in a TD to take the lead. I guess that’s what you get when Peyton’s your QB, and VD’s dancing is what we get when Alex is our QB. Peyton don’t play that! (In Living Color reference… anyone? no? just me? ok…)

I tend to recall the 2002 World Series whenever I see people celebrating too soon. With the Giants beating the Angels late in game 6, a game in which a victory would’ve won it all for the Giants, who were up in the series 3-2, the Giants’ dugout began celebrating way too early and ended up allowing the Angels to rally back and take that game and eventually the series. Most of you are probably all too familiar with that game/series, so sorry for bringing it up and putting a bitter taste in your mouth! Go drink some Singletary kool-aid to get rid of that taste… oh wait, that stuff will probably leave a bitter taste in your mouth too! Just disregard this paragraph altogether.

My bad, Giants fans… GO GIANTS!!!

My point is this: don’t celebrate winning a battle when you are still fighting the war! Or better yet, as was the case with VD on Sunday, when you are LOSING the war!

But I personally just didn’t like seeing VD celebrating when we were behind trying to make a comeback.

Didn’t like it myself. But when you’re Vernon Davis and you’ve caught 40 yard passes, you know how much time you have until the slow offensive linemen make their way up to the line.

I guess that’s what you get when Peyton’s your QB, and VD’s dancing is what we get when Alex is our QB.

False. That’s what you get when you have a culture of professionalism vs. a culture of emotion. Has nothing to do with Alex Smith.

Very true about the difference in the culture of the two teams. The attitude and beliefs of the HC and the staff are inherited by the players. Singletary is a very emotional coach, therefore his players will play with emotion. Smith is most definitely a product of his environment.

Leave Smith in now, change everything necessary after the season is over.

Agree to let Smith finish this season. Let him start every game. Give him all possible support. Improved play calling, unpredictable and creative, pass first downs, etc. Then, when the season is over, look it over carefully. Fire Sing, and/or Smith and move on. Or decide Sing and/or Smith will lead the 49ers to the SB and keep everything the same. I really don’t believe Sing has that potential. I’m still not sure about Smith. He has a great arm, all the throws, smarts, etc. If the light that eliminates mistakes goes on, he could be a SB or back-up SB QB.

Rachal, NOrris. QUite frankly I don't know if another CB has had as bad a play as Nate's fumble.

Most of our defense has looked pretty mediocre, too.

Alex Smith was a bottom-five QB after four games. Some of that was his fault. Some of it was the fault of the worst offensive coordinating in the league, by far.

(Seriously. When have you ever seen coordinating that bad? That was worse than the guy we had before Martz.)

He was substantially better than that this week. He was, probably, a middle-of-the-league QB this week, maybe a bit better. Of course, one week of slightly-above-average and four weeks of suck doesn’t make you a good QB.

But there are worse QBs than Smith getting starts in the NFL. People need to remember that.

I like how people don't even fact their check their hatred of Alex Smith

Dude just hit his back step, hopped forward, and threw the ball. He was STRAIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HASHES. Watch the replay again, if you like The play starts at 3:53.

Sure, he could have stared down the rush, saw that the DT was going to get inside on Davis and bootlegged out of there. But that requires him to take his eyes off the downfield read he had already made.

Trust me, learning english isn’t a waste of time. It is actually sort of useful.

-randolphforpresident

by Dubs fan in Boston on Oct 15, 2010 9:27 AM PDT up reply actions

The replay is at about 3:55 at that clip.

And the truth is it makes Smith’s read totally reasonable.

The delayed inside move to allow the stunt makes it look like Davis has held up his man. The reality is that his man isn’t trying until the stunting lineman powers through.

It’s a very well-designed pass rush. But even still, If Davis can actually hold his man, it wouldn’t have worked.

But it looks like Davis almost gives up on the play. He buys his opponents delay move as the play being one of the many, many plays in the NFl that individual d-linement take off.

(And, interestingly, I guess I can’t blame people here for calling it a blitz when the commentators do the same thing. But watch the replay: it’s not a blitz. It’s a four-man rush with a stunt/delay).

Let’s hope Davis figures it out. Some rookie hiccups are understandable, but he’s got to not make that kind of mistake. It really looks like a mental letdown as much as anything else.

Blaming Smith for that INT is moronic.

Let's have a look at 49er OC's shall we?..

Mike McCarthy, Norv Turner, Jim Hoslter, Mike Martz, and Jimmy Raye.

I see 2 out of five OC’s how have made an impact on HOF QB’s. I see 2 out of five that has won Super Bowls. I see one out of five that had Eric Dickerson. I see one out of four that didn’t have a QB that passed over 1000 yards. Yet I see the weakest in Jim Hostler here.

So the 49ers didn’t address offense? The only OC on this list didn’t have a QB that threw over 300 yards in a game.

I had to wait a day

I wanted to say this yesterday, but I had to wait a day to post because I just signed up. So I’ve been reading the blog for a couple years now, but first time posting…

When Smith fumbled, I said to my wife: He’s done, that’s it. But then I calmed down and realized, what is the other option? Carr is not the answer. I knew then that Alex had to step up, which he did. He didn’t win the game, but I think he had the potential to. It was a bonehead play for sure, but he didn’t lose the game. Gore’s 2 fumbles, the bad defense throughout, and Smith’s fumble lost it. I didn’t even mind the 2 int’s, as the first was as good as a punt, and the second was as he was hit.

0-5 really really sucks, but I still think they can turn it around. Of course that’s what I said for week 3 against the Chiefs. I think they can win the division, but I’m not sure if they will. It’s unlikely, but not possible. I really like what I have seen from AS this season. I think they need to open up the playbook a little more for him, and he needs to take more chances, as weird as that sounds.

by NinersFan_LA on Oct 12, 2010 11:15 AM PDT reply actions

AS

The problem with AS is exactly what you’re bringing up — one minute he looks horrible, the next minute he looks great. Inconsistency has been his problem all along. The point is, he hasn’t been able to correct it. He’s had 6 years in the NFL to figure it out and hasn’t done it yet. My feeling is he never will. Because part of the inconsistency has to do with his lack of accuracy when he throws deep. And in the NFL if you can’t hit your guy in stride when you throw deep it’s like the wolves come out. 8 in the box. That’s how you stop the run, short passes, screen passes — by putting 8 guys upfront and daring the QB to throw deep without making a mistake. I don’t know how you fix something like that if it hasn’t been fixable to-date.

So your post makes sense, but only when looking at Smith for this one game, which of course isn’t the point anymore.

LUNCH in LONDON

Subject: Lunch in London

This is off the subject, but a good place to announce an informal get-together for fans attending the Denver game in London. Arrangements have been made to have a no host lunch of the Niner Faithful on Saturday, October 30 at Noon at Waxy O’Connors, an Irish pub located at 14 – 16 Rupert St, London. http://www.waxyoconnors.co.uk/london. Waxy O’Connors is near the Piccadilly Circus tube station which is on the Piccadilly and Bakerloo lines. We have tentatively been given the Dargle Bar room with a capacity of about 50. If we have a lot less we’ll be given some nearby tables; if we have more, we’ll overflow into adjoining areas. Seating will be first come-first seated. The major bloggers have been invited and so far Messrs. Barrows (SacBee), Brown (MercNews), Fucinello (Niner Nation) and Maiocco (Comcast) have indicated they’ll be there if schedules allow, and Eric Branch (Press Democrat) is also a possibility. Please indicate how many in your party intend to participate by sending an email to londonniner@aol.com as soon as possible. We need a reasonably accurate headcount soon in order to save the room. Your email address will be retained in case it’s needed for later updates regarding the event.

for the McNabb'ers

interesting bit from PFW:

(McNabb) is a great quarterback when he can stand tall in the pocket, look downfield and throw the ball, but when he feels like he is being pressured, like he did against Dallas, they have no chance. Absolutely none. He gets nervous, loses his accuracy and is a different (quarterback) when he has to get rid of it quickly.

This team needs some real leadership from it's players.

Well that's quite comical isn't it?

McNabb was getting pressured all day against Green Bay and still played like a champ.

What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

Thats the case for all QB's look at Manning last week vs KC and Brady in the SB vs the giants.

yeah I know…….duhhhhhh

Damn you Montana and Young, your success has spoiled a great percentage of our fan base into speculative rants and raves and pure denial of reality.

our situation might have produced some not-so-good QB play from McNabb too…the O-Line has to improve (deja freaking vu)

I think so, and had that deal been with SF, they wouldhave wanted one of our first rounders and maybe a third.

no Bowman or one of th eOL and potentially no mays. i swear the Crabtree pick is like a massive domino affect.

Why does everyone assume...

QBs better than Smith would only be as good as Smith if they were in our system? That is given him way more credit than he has earned. McNabb is, and has always been, a better QB. Is it possible he would have some difficulty with our O-Line play. Would he be as bad as Smith behind them? I don’t think so, and it is impossible to support any claim that he would.

Smith may have been dealt a bad hand coming here at the time he did. I DO think that is a huge reason for his ineffectiveness. I think he has a severe lack of confidence. When he IS confident, he plays well. When he isn’t, or there is too much pressure on him, he sucks. After 6 years here, being criticized by every media personality, most fans, booed at home field, etc… do you think that will make him more confident? Make him play better? No chance in [site decorum].

The rep Smith has earned here is that of a decent back-up QB. If he goes somewhere else, starts with a clean slate, maybe site behind a veteran QB… THEN, I think he can be the QB his fans here think he can be. I don’t think he has any chance of being successful here though.

Why does everyone assume … QBs better than Smith would only be as good as Smith if they were in our system?

Because we’ve seen it time and time again: very few QBs can be successful when the team around them is in disarray.

With a few exceptions (really, the Peyton-level guys, of which there are rarely more than two or three in the league at any one time) a QB without a running game or pass protection can’t get the job done.

This is part of what makes evaluating QBs so hard. Matt Leinart looked great in college – not because he was great, but because he had the best offensive line and the best running game. Take those away, and he’s not accurate enough to be an NFL backup.

Is McNabb a better QB than Smith? Almost certainly. On the other hand, he’s also had the benefit of a MUCH better situation than Smith has, and it’s very hard to tease out those factors.

The INT that ended Sunday’s game is the perfect example. The RT relaxes, and the QB can’t complete a pass to an open receiver, on a route where he’d been eating the other team for lunch, at a key moment during the game. If Davis holds that block for a third of a second longer, that’s not an INT.

That’s what the margin of error is in the NFL. You can not ignore it when looking at QB performance.

Now, yes, McNabb is almost certainly better than Smith, anyway. But you have to assume that McNabb would be much worse if he were in Smith’s than he was in Philly, so it becomes the very hard-to-answer question of “how much worse?”

I think you probably don’t understand how small the margins are in the NFL. THe difference between success (McNabb in Philly) and failure (Smith in SF):

Smith has thrown one more interception every hundred throws.
Smith has completed two fewer passes every 100 throws.
Smith has gotten .8 fewer yards/passing attempt.

That’s it. That’s the difference between McNabb being a huge success in this league and Smith being a failure.

You don’t think that a better o-line can save you one interception every hundred throws? You don’t think that the difference between some of the best offensive coaching (Reid) and the worst (Raye, Hostler) can result in two extra completions every hundred attempts?

Really?

Alex is what he is.....

I wouldn’t blame so much Alex Smith as i would the guy who keeps sticking w/ him.
he has been baggage for what 5 seasons now? Team 9er has know Smith sucked/s for years now.

This is a bad coaching decision, so was releasing Nate Davis. In Nate you might have had the answer to your prayers. Now y’all never know, great move there Singletary.

We’ll see you guys on Sunday it should be a good battle;

1 team trying to establish itself.
The other trying to…….Well not be 0-6 by Sunday evening.

I disagree with you on that

I mean we all know Smith sucks now.
But I actually felt he could be a good QB before the beginning of the season.

Sure it was stupid to put all our eggs in his basket, but hey it happened.

Anyone see Barrows' tweet of Joe Namath's comments from Sirius radio?

“I tell you what, give up Alex Smith, you’ll see about 29 teams or 28 teams trying to grab him.”

I thought that was pretty cool. Dude may be a bit off his rocker, but I have to agree with him. I think most NFL teams will see the 49ers, not Alex Smith, as the problem. They’ll see it as “this kid has talent and smarts… if only WE got our hands on him for a few years.” And honestly, I agree with that. If a Shanahan of sorts got to work with Smith for a few years, I bet the results would be dramatically different.

I was going to come in and post the same thing

Problem is there are two camps of fans and you can’t have a middle ground.

There are the “alex Smith is the worst QB in the history of professional football” guys and the “Alex Smith only sucks because the organization sucks”.

As with most things the truth lies somewhere in the middle.

by smileyman on Oct 15, 2010 3:50 PM PDT up reply actions

You know who the other 4 teams are?

49ers, Rams, Cardinals, and Seahawks.
Because they know Smith sucks.

Seriously though, maybe a change of scenery might do Smith good.
Maybe if he’s in a place where he isn’t coddled and given everything without having to work for it he’ll succeed.

What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

I see your point...

But how does anyone actually know Smith sucks? What quarterback on the 49ers HASN’T sucked in the last 7 years? I know: There hasn’t been the most talent roaming through at QB in SF, but look out how Steve Young always talks about when he got his opportunity in SF, “Let me go see how good I can be.” I don’t think a single quarterback has had that chance in SF since 2002.

Look at Matt Cassel. He had very good success in New England, surrounded by great coaching, a great offensive system, and consistent talent on the field. Now he’s inconsistent at best in Kansas City. He never looked like Brady in New England, but he certainly was good. Now he’s one of the bottom tier QBs in the league.

Hell, the fact Shaun Hill is having similar results in Detroit as he did in San Francisco tells me all I need to know.

Disagree with one point
I don’t think a single quarterback has had that chance in SF since 2002.

After this season, Alex Smith will have gotten his chance.
There are no more excuses.

I don't think Smith sucks

I think he’s an average starting QB who can be brilliant at times and other times be the stupidest player ever.

And even if he does turn in a great season from here on out I think it might be best for his career for him to move on to a different city. I don’t think 49er fans will ever accept him. There will always be a large contigent who will blame him for every loss, and every time he throws an INT they’ll be “Well there goes Alice again. I knew he was just a fluke.”

Sometimes a player just needs a change of scenery to turn it around.
