Future GM's
Okay, I am like the rest of you and I feel the pain of the horrible 0-5 start. But I have to ask the most important question of the future. Who is the next 49er GM? Because if the Front Office that is picked by the owners doesn't like Singletary, they will replace him. And if the 49ers do fire Singletary and then hire a coach before a GM, well that hasn't worked so far. Now a lot of people will suggest Bill Parcells and I have no problem with that. Parcells would come on board for a few years and make sure to leave a replacement. But that isn't the route I would go.
No, the best decision by J. York is to decide the GM to hire who is flexible and will help keep the roster growing, while also not being married to one type of coaching philosophy. I will suggest a few but feel free to offer some ideas.
1: Kevin Colbert, Steelers: has helped built teams in detroit as a scout and in Pitt as Director of football since 2000. The man can evaluate talent. And I don't believe he is only capable of great defenses. The best part, the Rooney family won't pay to keep him, they don't pay anyone to stick around. So if York offers him enough money he would come. My favorite.
2: Rich Mckay: Helped built the Tampa Buccs and then went to Atlanta to build, where he did well until the whole Mike Vick fiasco cost him his job (He did sign Vick to a 100 million contract and then Vick got arrested and McKay was demoted to VP of personal). Best part, he helped build a Tampa 2, then moved to a west coast offense and had little problems. Is a strong believer in building through the draft. The best 2nd option.
3: Ted Thompson, GB. Sadly he is cheap when it comes to free agents, but the guy has helped guilt a great team in Green Bay and I respect that. And he isn't specific to any coaching philosophy, so that helps a lot. Sadly is a current GM and I haven't heard of him wanting to leave.
4: Mike Holmgren, I have to mention him because I think he would rebuild the 49ers to the greatness we remember. The man loves a west coast, so if he is hired he would get rid of Singletary quickly but he would try to find a coach with a west coast mindset. Sadly, he just signed a big contract with the Browns so I don't know if he could leave.
5. Ryan Grigson: Vp of players personal, Eagles. He has been a part of the organization for years and has worked in the talent evaluation department. I like him because he has worked in a great organization for a long time, he understands the need to develop through the draft.
I am a firm believer that the 49ers need to find that front office guy to actually strengthen the team. Does anyone else have any thoughts?

Baalke...
Seems like a good personnel guy. Time will tell if he’s cut out to be a GM. Well, that’s assuming the 49ers allow him to remain in his current role—not even sure what his title actually is these days. From the interviews I’ve heard/seen w/ him, he really seems to know his stuff when it comes to evaluating players. KPIX had a segment where Baalke walked a reporter through game film of every member of the 49ers 2010 draft class and discussed what he saw in the players that made him go after them. It was interesting and it seemed as though he really has a passion for what he does.
I wonder if he would stay on w/ the 49ers in the personnel department if they did decide to go out and hire an official GM. It would be a blow to his ego I’m sure, but maybe he’d agree to stay for a raise and a guarantee of being #2. To me, that’s the most ideal situation—Baalke stays on in the personnel department and helps evaluate players and is 2nd in command to a GM who makes the final decisions. Whatever happens, the 49ers must keep personnel decisions separate from coaching. The HC should have input, but the dual role of HC/GM is just asking for trouble.

his official title is Vice President of Player Personnel.
We don't need 8 in the box. We have 52 in the box.

TOny Dungy
He says he doesnt want to coach anymore well lets make him our GM.
Seahawks made an offer to Tony Dungy to work in their front office before they hired Pete Carroll and John Schneider.
He declined and said he’s retired for good.
Should have drafted Sanchez.

How many GM's get one draft?
Geez people think sometimes.
Damn you Montana and Young, your success has spoiled a great percentage of our fan base into speculative rants and raves and pure denial of reality.

Baalke not gm
He’s a scout/VP of player personnel. I believe that Sing is the GM, and HC’s are too busy coaching the team to worry about drafts, and free agents, etc. The 49ers must get a GM in place over the HC to do the job, preferably a football guy. Sadly I had never heard of Baalke prior to the McCullough firing, and I don’t like the concept of an unknown guy with no authority. That does not fix the long term problems in the 49ers organization. If York wants to make Baalke the GM, go ahead, but I don’t like it. I prefer guys with more experience and previous positions as VPs of player personnel (see all of the above).
I dunno, I thought this recent draft was one of thebest we have had in YEARS.

Agree
I would like to have one of those “football guys” running the show, but what’s to say that Baalke isn’t the right guy for the job. He listened to his HC and went and got the players that he needed. If he had said, “screw you I’m drafting who I like and your job is to coach them,” then I’d say he’s not fit for the job.
Fact is, he did exactly what he should have done in the draft, and his hands were bound as far as FAs go. Let’s not forget he didn’t take over until late April, well after the FA period had opened. He got 8 players who all made the team because they were better than who they replaced. Though in one instance, Byham, he should have replaced Norris not Robinson on the 53.
Problem now is that Sing has full power over the roster and Baalke can’t do anything about it. I’d imagine, following this year (especially if they do retain Sing), we’re going to see a more standard structure where the HC answers to the GM (Baalke) and is accountable for everything. If we bring in a new coach, he’ll be held accountable as well by said GM.

Baalke Showed very well in this years draft!
Lets give the man a complete free agency period and another draft before we draw any real conclusions about him. Personally I think he’s the right man for the job!
GM is much, much more than just about the drafting
Baalke doesn’t even spend most of his time in the office, so who’s handling the day-to-day running of the organization?
I don't know.
But IMO whoever is running the team should be more aggressive in making moves to improve the team i.e. Mcnabb and Cromartie. Look at the great teams of the NFL, the Patriots and Jets, the Niners of old, always making moves, bringing in personnel to fill team needs, building for the future. These teams have great management and great head coaches. The lack of assertiveness makes me question the competency of the NIners FO and head coach.

We do not have a GM
We have one guy who handles the draft, one who handles the contracts, and different people working on different parts of the game. We have multiple captains but no general. So this is all Jed York’s fault
Exactly
No general on top, just a few captains running the show. My good friend pointed out something to me the other day, the one constant in the 49ers the last few years is the lack of good Front office for years. And in the NFL, you need a good FO to become great. Now I will agree that some teams have succeeded without a GM (See Patriots). But that was the not the norm. And if everyone like Baalke, then keep him as a Director of scouting. But the 49ers need a solid FO. If you don’t think a FO is important, see how the Lions have worked the last decade without one.
hell no on chromartie
He can cover deep n thts bout it. Peppers was the guy

I like Baalke too, but he is a personnel guy. What we need is ...
A football-knowledgeble GM who can do two things: (1) balance the power between Baalke and Singletary (or other HC), and (2) manage the front office, thus allowing Baalke to focus on personnel and the HC to focus on coaching. Jed is not qualified to handle the former and, although capable, should not be spending his time on the latter. He should find the right guy to become GM and then focus on making the new stadium happen.
Of the GM candidates that you present, there is no possibility of getting Ted Thompson or Mike Holmgren. Likewise, somebody mentioned Tony Dungy, who would be fully capable for the job but would never move to the west coast. I view Kevin Colbert and Ryan Grigson as simply being Trent Baalke with more experience. None of those three are what we should be looking for in a GM — we need much more than “a personnel guy.” Trent is good at what he does, although he could stand to have more power/support (versus Singletary) in the organization, but if he spent his time doing GM duties he would be less competent in his personnel role. Let him focus on what he does well. Now, as for real GM candidates, there aren’t too many good ones around, that we could get, but Rich McKay may be one of those. I didn’t like the way he handled the Vick situation, but I’m sure that he learned A LOT from that fiasco. He is well respected within the League, has California roots, and probably isn’t happy about the demotion. He certainly would be at the top of my list of candidates to talk with.
