Lets Switch Things Up A Bit, And Talk About The Positive

Fooch's Note: Given all the negative vibes, I'm down for some positive discussion. I realize people will find negatives even in the few positives, but I think we could use some remotely positive discussion.

Sure there were some, or a lot, of negative things in this game. But that will all be discussed. What won't be talked about much is the positive that happened.

Once again Mike Johnson showed us why he is such an upgrade over Jimmy Raye. With Alex Smith and Vernon Davis hooking up on a wide open 1-yard touchdown, it marked the 3rd time in just 4 games that we have scored an opening drive touchdown. Something that was never even done with Raye in 19 chances. Frank Gore also had a nice 20-yard run on that drive. And on one of the best looking plays this year, Smith waited and waited and then threw a bomb to Davis down the middle to the 1-yard line for 53 yards. That's a pass David Carr would never of been close to completing. But no more negative David Carr talk. He also created mismatches on the defense when he ran the ball with 3 WR sets, and it worked.

Frank Gore had a nice day. Getting over 100 yards on 19 carries, and average of 5.2. He had multiple nice runs, including a 20 and 19 yarder. This is the Frank Gore we all know. He did a nice job running out of  "11" personnel. He also added 57 yards with 4 catches.

Vernon Davis once again caught a touchdown pass. His 4th of the year and the 4th straight game with one. At the end of the day, he caught 4 passes for 74 yards.

The run defense showed up again today against Carolina's 1-2 punch of Smash and Dash. As they stopped Williams to 44 yards on 19 carries. And held Stewart to 29 yards on 14 carries.

And finally the defense forced turnovers. 3 forced fumbles, 2 fumble recoveries, 1 interception, 1 touchdown. Shawntae Spencer missed the tackle, but did a nice job of hitting and pushing DeAngelo Williams backwards, which then led Nate Clements to strip the ball with Parys Haralson recovering it. Spencer also jarred the ball from Steve Smith, and then finished it off by recovering it himself. This is the 2009 defense we are used to seeing. And probably the highlight that will be on SportsCenter tonight is Ray McDonald reading a screen perfectly, getting in front of the back, and, as Chris Berman would say, was "Rumblin, Bumblin, Stumblin" his way to the endzone. 3 takeaways is a pretty good day for a defense.

Sometimes we shouldn't just look at the negatives and judge someone that way. But, instead, judge them on what they have done, not what they didn't do. Whoever the quarterback is next week in London, we should all support him. Lets hope there are even more positives next week.

Positive?

Don’t be a jerk. Ha ha.

by Delmuir on Oct 24, 2010 4:47 PM PDT reply actions

Frank Gore

is all we got right now, he is the heart and soul of the team and he is starting to get old.

by danknerd49 on Oct 24, 2010 5:00 PM PDT reply actions

He's always taken losing hard...

remember a few years back he was so angry and frustrated at the cavalier attitude of his teammates after a loss that he started crying? He’s a winner and he deserves a chance to see the playoffs when he’s still good enough to enjoy helping his team win.

by Delmuir on Oct 24, 2010 5:38 PM PDT up reply actions

yeah

frank gore it is. see my reality post :p

No moral victories or positives in a loss anymore.

Changes need to be made on this team. Simple as that. We suck.

More positiveness

GIANTS IN THE WORLD SERIES!!!!….

no seriously I hope Alex recovers well and whoever he may play for, whether it be us or another team, I hope he excels, he never can seem to catch a break and whenever it seems like he might turn it around something happens. Best of luck Alex, hopefully you’re back and tear it up on the Broncos like the Raiders, yes the Raiders, did today.

Hit like Berry, Score like Jerry.

He's at least as good as Eli

which makes him a capable starter. Its amazing fans still don’t see that. Carr is a capable backup on a team that gives him protection.

Gimme 1 round!

Eli

10TDs 8 INTs and Eli threw 3 picks against the defense we just played.

But...

He’s Eli Manning! That makes him better…

no offense or anything

but eli manning >>> alex smith… this is one of those things that stats can’t tell you, but common sense and the power of observation will

by vitzeng on Oct 24, 2010 10:15 PM PDT up reply actions

thank you

There was no point in replying to such an absurd statement. Alex Smith is in no way better than Eli.

by AKinferno on Oct 25, 2010 12:41 AM PDT up reply actions

Eli is overrated...

but saying he’s the same as Smith? If for some reason you want the Giants to win, there just isn’t the same sense of butterflies in the stomach when E. Manning takes the snap that you get watching Alex every time out.

by asleepinSF on Oct 25, 2010 5:15 PM PDT up reply actions

Overrated or not, he is much better than Alex

I am not saying he will never be good. But right now, he is not even close to being comparable to Eli Manning.

by AKinferno on Oct 25, 2010 6:51 PM PDT up reply actions

Having written that, and wanting the Giants to win tonight 'cause...

they’re playing the Cowpies, what does Manning do? Opens the game with 2 interceptions. Manning has a better line to work behind, and better receivers. There are three things Manning does not do that Smith does. Eli doesn’t run right and fling the ball away at the first sign of trouble. Manning finds open receivers downfield instead of constantly checking down, and he doesn’t walk into pass rushers.

by asleepinSF on Oct 25, 2010 7:16 PM PDT up reply actions

One positive?

Alex Smith didn’t lose This One for us. Unless you want to blame him for getting himself injured and allowing Carr to play.

by agchee on Oct 24, 2010 5:31 PM PDT reply actions

I Think

the younger players getting playing time is a positive. Taylor Mays, Navorro Bowman, Michael Crabtree and Anthony Dixon are all going to be players in this league.

I am incredibly disappointed by Mike Singletaries coaching, or lack thereof.. This team is playing uptight right now, and that is a direct result of his coaching. If the 49ers lose next Sunday i think he is DONE!! But who are we going to replace him with? Menusky? Johnson? We really don’t have many options. But 1-6 with this team is unacceptable!!!

by Pat Willie on Oct 24, 2010 5:37 PM PDT reply actions

It's a little disconcerting watching the niners in person

and not hearing tons of people whine about smith/sing/refs

really just seemed like Carr was rusty and our F@%%^ DBs refuse to turn their heads around downfield and get beat on passes they should break up. Goldson has a lot of positives but deep coverage late in the game is not one of them.

by foosball4949 on Oct 24, 2010 5:39 PM PDT reply actions

it's gonna be hard to see positives until this team has a new direction

it needs one in a bad way. Sing is as good as gone— I hope York doesn’t do something really dumb in replacing him or firing him at midseason though.

Positive from today...

Aaron Rodgers just pulled a matt moore and threw a pass directly to jared allen, something that someone who has been in the league as long as he has shouldn’t do lol….see, it isn’t only alex that makes stupid mistakes hahaha

by sanfranfanmdk on Oct 24, 2010 5:49 PM PDT reply actions

i'm positive...

i’d trade Alex Smith for Aaron Rodgers.

by LA9erFan on Oct 24, 2010 5:51 PM PDT up reply actions

And we'd have about the same results....

Rodgers is up to 8 ints so far this season (and this game isn’t even over yet)

by sanfranfanmdk on Oct 24, 2010 5:55 PM PDT up reply actions

They aren't comparable....

Alex was thrown to the wolves on a crappy team, Rodgers was given time to learn on a playoff caliber team….and he STILL has almost as many ints this year lol

by sanfranfanmdk on Oct 24, 2010 5:59 PM PDT up reply actions

FYI

Rogers is like 1-11 in games decided by 6 points or less he has a better receiving core as well and as sanfranfanmdk said smith has always been on a poorly coached and managed teams

by DJG on Oct 24, 2010 6:04 PM PDT up reply actions

Also one could argue a better coaching staff as well

My original comment started off more as a joke, and I know Alex isn’t perfect, but people seem to think he is the only starting QB in the league that does stupid things. Favre is 41 yrs old and he still does things that you would think a rookie would only do

by sanfranfanmdk on Oct 24, 2010 6:07 PM PDT up reply actions

alex

is out of excuses. if he sucks because our team is so crappy than he should ask to be traded. i don’t think i can support the 9ers next year if that dude is still on this team. he’s cursed.

Alex Smith is garbage...

by redrum21225 on Oct 24, 2010 6:09 PM PDT up reply actions

I do think he may be cursed....

sometimes you just need a change of scenery, a fresh start…let him go to the Colts and learn behind Manning, then in a few years, take over when Manning retires

by sanfranfanmdk on Oct 24, 2010 6:10 PM PDT up reply actions

Arizona will throw money at him before that happens.

As Joe Willie said… He’s had more OCs in his first 5 years than I had in my entire career. If he leaves SF 28 or 29 teams will be looking at him.

by ItBurnzWhenIP on Oct 24, 2010 6:13 PM PDT up reply actions

lol with the direction the Niners are going, I wouldn't

i mean it may not be Alex that “beats” us (because football is the ultimate team game), but i am not confident in them turning this franchise around any time soon

And here I was completely ignorant

that such gank existed that could literally explode one’s frontal lobe out the front of their forehead. Smith better than Eli after a few hits of that good stuff. Underrated. As good as Rogers after a few more (and after cleaning the itty bitty bits of brain off your keyboard).

Oh yeah, Smith’s been nothing short of terrific this year so far as the tiny set of groupies whose world rises and sets in the sad tard’d jock are concerned.

Indeed the world’s smallest violin is just smokin from working overdrive for poor widdle alex. Boo hoo! He gawt thrown to the wulves. Like Sam Bradford… no no no no no… like Peyton Manning… errr… Anyway we just know he’s great because of how well he’s played in his sixth year, when we haven’t been lamenting the times in which his teammates have let him down (that ball the spectators in section 353 nabbed should’ve been caught if Crabtree wasn’t doggin it!).

What was he today then? 9 of 19? Second consecutive week below 50% completions. At the absolute bottom of the league tables in ypa for a team that is usually good for one offensive touchdown per week on its way to posting l’s against some of the worst defenses in football.

Yea, we can’t let this underrated jewel in the franchise’s crown get away. He’s just that good.

by ItBurnzWhenIP on Oct 25, 2010 3:46 AM PDT up reply actions

That's obviously Alex Smith's fault...

He couldn’t inspire Drew Brees to throw the ball. Smith is a good QB. San Francisco is a bad team mostly because the coaching can’t figure out how to utilize a pro-bowl TE, pro-bowl RB and three decent to really good WR’s.

That’s on the coaching, end of story.

by sigma on Oct 24, 2010 6:20 PM PDT up reply actions

And because they drafted a guy that has a history of whiffing on blocks

i still feel anthony davis has the tools to be dominating.

i’d rather have a tackle with star tools than a ceiling, more polished prospect. but without question, he caused that injury

by TeeKay89 on Oct 24, 2010 6:23 PM PDT up reply actions

That ceiling on performance...

Would have meant that we had an NFL ready, quality OT. He hasn’t had a ton of trouble keeping Smith upright.

We drafted the guy with more promise who wasn’t ready to play this year and we played him anyways. And we have an injured QB because of it.

by sigma on Oct 24, 2010 6:25 PM PDT up reply actions

well thats the gamble the team took

for the future, its a lot better. we weren’t going to do anything this year anyways. the Defense has too many holes and manusky is a bad, bad bad coordinator

by TeeKay89 on Oct 24, 2010 6:27 PM PDT up reply actions

And is it me, or does it seem like they don't give him as much help as they should?

It just seems like there should be more TE help or something for him, especially since Rachal (who has played most of the snaps at RG) has been mostly terrible

by sanfranfanmdk on Oct 24, 2010 6:27 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't say he's been all bad.

But he was terrible today. And he did the thing I knew would eventually happen. Get off balance and whiff entirely. And it came at the worst possible time – When Alex was waiting for something to come open on the left side looking away.

Gimme 1 round!

Montana had more than Young did...

Does that mean that Montana was the far superior QB to Steve Young? It could. But I don’t think so.

He also had far more than Dan Marino. Does that mean he was far superior to Dan Marino? It could, but I don’t think so. Same goes for Elway or even Archie Manning.

Smith stinking it up (which happened, yet still was able to save his job).

Smith getting injured (which happened).

The fan support at the game today was awesome. There seemed to be more red shirts in the stands today than there was blue or black. The parking lot’s were packed with 49er fans- almost in a state of awe at the fact that we outnumbered the home team fans. I’d like to thank all of the 49er fans for showing such awesome support even though we completely suck. The 49ers brass should take note that there was such a great turnout at a game 2500 miles away from home. What if they were good!?!

I met Andy Lee’s dad in the parking lot and he was real cool. That was another positive.

Fortunately the Panther fans realize their team is nothing to cheer about and for the most part were not rude, I had some great conversations with many of them about what was going to happen next, which were almost always correct.

Also It was a true pleasure being able to watch the game with so many 9er fans in earshot to jump around with during the good times. The 5 hour drive home was not any bit of fun however.

I have also always liked the Charlotte area, so I had a good time on the weekend aside from the game result.

Positives are

We know Sing was right when he says Alex gives us our best shot to win!
We know that our top pick next year needs to be the est QB or the best CB.
We know that if we don’t win the rest of our games Singletary will be gone.
I think Mike Johnson is better than any OC we have had in sometime.
Ray McDonald has to be given the chance to start.
Manusky needs to be fired. We play so far off the LOS that every play that isn’t a run is a 1st down. Why do we have big corners if we aren’t going to press?

by TripTheNinja on Oct 24, 2010 6:35 PM PDT up reply actions

I'll give you a positive!

The team is 1-6.
The season, for all intents and purposes, is over and it’s still freakin’ October.
The head coach is telling the press that they can still make the playoffs.
The defense can’t stop one of the worst offenses in professional football when it needs to.
The offense is impotent.
The team is the laughing stock of the NFL.

Here’s the positive…
I’m going to the pumpkin patch during the game next Sunday. I’m going to pick pumpkins, go on a hayride, and make my way through the corn maze. I’ve been a Niner fan since the days of John Brodie. However, I will not waste another minute watching inept football and worse coaching. Free at last, free at last, thank God almighty, I’m free at last.

by bcabbage on Oct 24, 2010 6:28 PM PDT reply actions

Good Call

I missed the game this weekend because I was camping on the CA coast and it was the best Sunday I’ve had all season. When football becomes literally painful to watch, then it’s time to step back, breathe, and acknowledge that it’s just a game. Taking a break doesn’t mean you’re any less of a fan, it just means you’re living life and choosing to spend one Sunday outside of football hell.

The team is in absolute chaos and there will be no playoffs this year—let’s just put that talk to rest. As fans, we should support the team and root for the 49ers, but also keep some perspective and recognize that using a Sunday for something other than football isn’t always a bad thing.

49ers por vida!!!!!!!!!!!!

by 49erSalvatrucha on Oct 24, 2010 6:37 PM PDT up reply actions

o-line

the o-line play was to be expected considering that you have Baas starting at center which is something he hasn’t done since college, two rookies from inferior college programs trying to adjust to the NFL and Rachal who is extremely inconsistent. They will b e better next year, but that isn’t going to help us now.

by DJG on Oct 24, 2010 6:41 PM PDT up reply actions

Because Alex IS that bad

The guy is simply a so-so QB. He’s inaccurate, has little pocket presence, takes way to long to read defenses, and tends to throw to outlet receivers regardless of coverage. For a backup, you could do worse. For a starter A. Smith sucks.

To be fair to Smith, Carr is worse, and the best QB on the team is on the Practice team because Singletary is trying to teach him how to be a man or something. If the 49ers want to win, their best option is to feed Nate Davis to the lions. Let him succeed or fail on his own.

This season is incredibly frustrating because:

a) the fans all drank the Kool-ade thinking that they had a contender this year, despite being a team that could barely win in the past few years. The team didn’t have the personnel at the start of the season, and hasn’t done anything (see next point) to fix it.
b) Young players are not being allowed to develop, so you end up with an older, slower version of last year.
c) The plays being called looks stupid because the offense ends up taking the third option on every play. I guarantee every play pass play called is not a screen to Gore, or 5 yd dump to Davis, but it looks that way because that is what Smith is executing.

I’m really looking forward to anyone trying to defend A. Smith or the decision to keep Davis off the field. 1-5 is 1-5.

And Nate Davis isn't playing because he's a waterhead that couldn't learn more than 75% of the playbook over 18 months

Dude is so dumb his college coaches dumbed down his offensive line protection calls to just 1 call per play.

Gimme 1 round!

by ItBurnzWhenIP on Oct 24, 2010 6:54 PM PDT up reply actions

Aside that not being true (I went to Ball State), Davis did run a simplified offense… which ironically is very similar to this one.

Davis isn’t book smart, but he is a very fast decision maker and had made great calls at the line for the (Ball State) Cardinals. It’s unfortunate that his coach and BSU’s athletic director turned the final four weeks of Nate’s insane season into a soap opera over Brady Hoke’s coaching contract.

by indymike on Oct 24, 2010 7:13 PM PDT up reply actions

It absolutely is true. The 75% number came from Davis' own mouth

And the 1 OLine protection number came from that reporter that knew him and blew him up as being irresponsible and not having any work ethic.

The Niners have as many as 8 or 9 different OLine protections for any 1 play. Davis didn’t or couldn’t, (cause he’s dumb), learn them.

Gimme 1 round!

Since you say so, we’ll all just push the I believe button.

by indymike on Oct 24, 2010 7:29 PM PDT up reply actions

1) dont be ignorant and call someone “dumb” because he/she has a disability as if you know what it’s like…
2) 75% of a playbook is enough to win a football game against a team that got dismantled by the raiders.
3) Should Nate Davis start next week if Alex is unable to play? Ya pretty much… since david carr’s ability to throw a brown oblong leather ball toward a red jersey is even worse than mine… and troy smith? ehh.. just… ugh no

by PartyStarter on Oct 24, 2010 9:11 PM PDT up reply actions

I realize that Denver lost big today. But who on this blog would be crazy enough to bet the ranch that the Niners will beat Denver next Sunday. They just lost to an 0-5 team, for God’s sake. I’ll say it right now – - – Niners on a downward bender. They will lose by 10 to Denver next Sunday to go 1-7. The QB position is pathetic, as is the defense.

what we can do for next year

Can we just go 1-15 and get a good draft pick. Trade back, select peterson or prince and get a DE with that extra pick. A NT in the second, and a safety in the third. Sign lamaar woodley, re-sign lawson – if he wants more than 3 million a year, release him. get rid of goldson

by TeeKay89 on Oct 24, 2010 6:50 PM PDT reply actions

it’s an uncommon position in college and usually takes years to develop one… better to sign a veteran.

Alex Smith is a good QB who makes bad decisions.

For some reason, after the first drive in each game he starts dumping off.. instead of going down field. Alex needs a different team in order to improve.

Gore was the biggest positive imo because his consistent production out of 11 personnel is evidence that we don’t need Norris to run the ball…in fact it’s pretty obvious we suck at running when Norris in there, whether it’s because he sucks or because all playcalling creativity goes out the window.

Positives - you can't talk about positives!

I’m so sick of talk talk talk. We talked all offseason of how good they looked. We talked all preseason on their perfect record how good they were. Expectations were at an all time high for them this year. Problem is no action. No matter how good they do on every facet of the game a WIN is a WIN and a LOSS is a LOSS.
