Predicting What the 49ers Should do in the 2011 NFL Draft

With the San Francisco 49ers season is pretty much done as any hope of the playoffs was quickly faded when the 49ers lost to the Carolina Panthers 23-20. So, the question for the 49ers is what positions will be looked at in the 2011 NFL Draft?

Offensively the 49ers have talented players in Frank Gore, Michael Crabtree, Vernon Davis, Delanie Walker, and Joe Staley. The major weaknesses offensively though have been the offensive line and at quarterback. So, in the first round do the 49ers go after a quarterback or offensive linemen?

That doesn't truly look like an option for the team as offensive linemen Anthony Davis and Mike Iupati were both taken in the first round in the 2010 draft and in 2011 with their experience as a rookie should benefit them greatly. If a quarterback is taken with the first selection it means that the 49ers still need to go after a veteran quarterback who would be willing to start for a couple of seasons and turnover the reigns to the young quarterback.

Then if a quarterback and offensive linemen aren't going to be taken in the first round then it comes down to the defensive side of the ball. Where there will be plenty of holes to fill as Dashon Goldson won't likely be resigned, Aubrayo Franklin more than likely will be gone, Manny Lawson could be resigned, and Nate Clements is getting older.

So, that means a safety, a cornerback, defensive tackle, or outside linebacker the 49ers are going to need from the draft. After that first pick then the 49ers should look at the best players available regardless of what side of the ball the players is on.

Here's a look at  the most likely first round picks for the 49ers:

  • Patrick Peterson CB LSU career stats 113 tackles, five interceptions, one forced fumble, and an interception returned for a touchdown.
  • Prince Amukamara CB Nebraska career stats 123 tackles, five interceptions, three forced fumbles and three sacks.
  • Andrew Luck QB Stanford  career stats 4,303 yards, 32 touchdowns to nine interceptions, 607 yards rushing and four touchdowns rushing.
  • Jake Locker QB Washington  career stats 6,988 yards, 50 touchdowns to 37 interceptions, 1,806 yards rushing and 26 touchdowns rushing.
  • Ryan Mallett QB Arkansas  career stats 6,559 yards, and 52 touchdowns to 19 interceptions.
  • Cameron Heyward DE Ohio State University career stats 139 tackles, 12 sacks and one interception returned for a touchdown.
  • Adrian Clayborn DE Iowa career stats 165 tackles, 18 sacks and one forced fumble.
  • Allen Bailey DE Miami 88 tackles and 18 sacks.
  • Bruce Carter OLB North Carolina 193 tackles, six sacks, three interceptions and two of the interceptions returned for a touchdown.

There's truly four players that the 49ers should look at in the first round and that is Mallett, Peterson, Clayborn, and Carter. The debate would be between drafting Peterson or Carter as the 49ers need help at the cornerback position, but also at outside linebacker position as well especially if Lawson is not resigned.

In my opinion the 49ers will take Peterson with their pick in the first round.

For the second round selection again it will be on the defensive side of the football with a defensive tackle, defensive end, or outside linebacker.

A look at the options in the second round:

  • Drake Nevis, LSU DT  career 122 tackles, nine sacks, three forced fumbles and one interception.
  • Jerrell Powe, Mississippi DT   career 52 tackles, five sacks, one forced fumble and one interception.
  • Cameron Jordan, California DE  career 139 tackles, 14 sacks and an interception.
  • Ryan Kerrigan, Purdue DE career 185 tackles, 27 sacks, four fumbles forced and an interception.
  • Christian Ballard, Iowa DE  career 124 tackles, nine sacks and a forced fumble.
  • Von Miller Texas A&M OLB  career 134 tackles and 24 sacks.
  • Mark Herzlich Boston College OLB  270 tackles, three sacks, nine interceptions, five forced fumbles, and two of the interceptions were returned for touchdowns.

The pick for round two for the 49ers will come down to two players Herzlich and Kerrigan, with Herzlich being selected as he may not be used much for a pass rush but he is a tremendous play maker as the nine interceptions prove and the five fumbles that were forced.

For the third round pick the 49ers should be looking at a defensive tackle, defensive end, or cornerback and those would be:

  • Kendrick Ellis DT Hampton Big 6'5 340 would take up a lot of space on the line.  Played his first two years of college at South Carolina. Only question mark were his off field transgressions which forced him to transfer to Hampton.
  • Sione Fua DT Stanford career 71 tackles, seven sacks and one forced fumble.
  • Jarvis Jenkins DT Clemson career  95 tackles and four sacks.
  • Sam Acho DE Texas  career 109 tackles, 17 sacks and three fumbles forced.
  • Pernel McPhee DE career Mississippi State  80 tackles, five sacks and one forced fumble.
  • Pierre Allen DE Nebraska  career 145 tackles, 12 sacks and a forced fumble.
  • Shareece Wright CB Southern Cal  career 89 tackles, one interception, one forced fumble, and one sack.
  • Chris L. Rucker CB Michigan State career 159 tackles, five interceptions, four fumbles forced and two sacks.
  • Marcus Gilchrist CB Clemson 162 tackles, two fumbles forced, one interception and one sack.

This one is tough as most of them would be good picks even though two have question marks in their character. Rucker was suspended from Michigan State and Ellis transferred to Hampton because of his mistakes. Rucker would be an excellent pick though because for a corner he would be one of the taller corners in the league at 6'2. Ellis is an interesting choice because of his massive size.

Overall though because of the question marks in their character the 49ers go the safe route and select Acho out of Texas.

In the fourth round that's where it gets interesting the 49ers have two selections in the round. This is where the 49ers most likely would select an offensive player such as a wide receiver, quarterback, offensive tackle,  fullback, or even a free safety. Here's a look at the likely selections in the fourth round:

Stanley Havili FB Southern Cal  career 61 carries, 434 yards, three touchdowns, 84 receptions, 894 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Colin Kaepernick QB Nevada  career 8,556 yards, 71 touchdowns to 21 interceptions, 3,575 yards rushing and 51 touchdowns rushing.

Austin Pettis WR Boise State career 183 receptions, 2,274 yards and 33 touchdowns.

Greg Little WR North Carolina career 86 receptions, 969 yards and six touchdowns, 805 yards rushing and six touchdowns rushing.

Terrence Toliver WR  LSU career 110 receptions, 1,552 yards, and nine touchdowns.

Jermale Hines FS Ohio State 130 tackles, three interceptions, two sacks, and an interception returned for a touchdown.

James Carpenter OT Alabama at 6'5" 300 part of Alabama's strong running game.

The two selections in the fourth round will be Kapernick and Pettis.

In the fifth round it's back to defense for the 49ers this time looking at middle linebackers, outside linebackers cornerbacks, free or strong safety, and possibly a fullback.

  • Mike Mohamed MLB California career  283 tackles, seven interceptions, five sacks, two forced fumbles and two interceptions returned for a touchdown.
  • Casey Matthews MLB  Oregon career 191 tackles, eight sacks and four interceptions.
  • Chykie Brown CB  Texas 95 tackles, four sacks, two interceptions and two fumbles forced.
  • Chris Carter  OLB Fresno State 188 tackles, 16 sacks and two fumbles forced.
  • Tejay Johnson FS TCU six interceptions and one returned for a touchdown.
  • Nate Williams SS Washington 190 tackles, two sacks,  two forced fumbles, and one interception.
  • Owen Maercic FB Stanford 26 carries 52 yards and six touchdowns.

Selection for the fifth round Johnson from TCU he's a playmaker and defends the pass well. Had at least 83 tackles in the last year plus.

The sixth round selection for the 49ers could be any position.

  • Ricky Elmore DE Arizona  career 109 tackles, 21 sacks, one forced fumble and one interception.
  • Brooks Reed DE Arizona career 81 tackles and 15 sacks.
  • Kenny Rowe OLB Oregon  81 tackles, 20 sacks and five forced fumbles
  • Quentin Davie OLB Northwestern 293 tackles, 15 sacks, five interceptions, five forced fumbles, and one interception returned for a touchdown.

Sixth round selection Davie who can tackle, work well in coverage, and can be used as a pass rusher as well.

Like the sixth round the 49ers could chose from any position.

  • James Dockery CB  Oregon State career 77 tackles and five interceptions
  • Jason Teague CB TCU  career 43 tackles, two interceptions, one fumble forced, and one interception returned for a touchdown.
  • Jock Sanders WR career West Virginia 176 receptions, 1,622 yards, 12 touchdowns,  582 yards rushing and six rushing touchdowns.
  • Aldrick Robinson WR  career Southern Methodist 152 receptions, 2,694 yards, and 24 touchdowns.

Selection Robinson as he would give the 49ers another option with his speed, could be used as a punt returner and as a kick returner. Averaged 17.7 yards per catch for his career.

For the 49ers here's how the draft could look like:

First Round: Patrick Peterson CB

Second Round: Mark Herzlich OLB

Third Round: Sam Acho DE

Fourth Round: Colin Kaepernick QB and Austin Pettis WR

Fifth Round: Tejay Johnson FS

Sixth Round: Quentin Davie OLB

Seventh Round: Aldrick Robinson WR

With these selections the 49ers will be able to improve on both sides of the ball.

Draft Threads

In the past we’ve discouraged additional draft threads so we could focus the discussion, BUT this is a perfect example of putting in the extra work to make it worthy of a separate FanPost from Drew K’s official FanPost. Good work from Rocky (and apparently no doggin on Manusky, big step!)

At this point I can’t really put in my two cents because I’ve been focusing on the NFL and not college. I’ll get in on these discussions in the coming weeks though.

Thanks

I appreciate the comment. It’s understandable it’s a little early to even think of the draft, but basically I felt after the game the season was over. So, why not look to the future?

draft

Nah, it’s never too early even if the team is playing well. We’ve had Draft Threads going for about 3 or 4 weeks now.

Never too early to talk about the draft.

Because the draft season is the best season in the NFL

Agreed

I was about to come here and tell him to post this on the other draft threads. But this is awesome I just scanned through the topic right now but it looks pretty good.

Case Keenum

Yes I know he is hurt this year, I do however think he could be a great steal in later rounds for QB over Luck or Locker in upper rounds

by danknerd49 on Oct 24, 2010 8:05 PM PDT reply actions

Career Stats

13,586 YDs 107 TDs 41 INTs

by danknerd49 on Oct 24, 2010 8:10 PM PDT up reply actions

That is definitely true as well

Keenum is forgotten about now thanks to the injury he suffered.

by Rocky63215 on Oct 24, 2010 8:11 PM PDT up reply actions

stats

I won’t question whether he’s good or not, but career stats aren’t always the best option for supporting your argument. Not saying he isn’t a good option, but just seems like given some of the inflated stats in college the argument needs a bit more.

by David Fucillo on Oct 24, 2010 8:20 PM PDT up reply actions

That is true as well

Case in point Tim Tebow, he’s got great college stats, but it wasn’t going to necessarily translate in the NFL, which is the reason why Kaepernick isn’t rated higher. Although, seeing him against Cal he can definitely make all the throws and at 6’6" he doesn’t have a problem seeing over defenders.

by Rocky63215 on Oct 24, 2010 8:22 PM PDT up reply actions

Keenum's stats

Should be judged similarly to Graham Harrell, Colt Brennan, and other QB’s playing in pass happy spread offenses.

I think Keenum is a good mid-round QB prospect but the odds are against him becoming a good NFL QB.

Rays in '08.... Desmond Jennings - the breakout continues.....

by youALREADYknow on Oct 24, 2010 9:11 PM PDT up reply actions

Yes

This is true and I agree, but Case stat’s are pretty good needless to say even in a pass heavy spread off. 107 TDs in 3.2 years… pretty good, people said Joe M wasn’t gonna make it in the NFL too. There is never a guarantee either way, we have all seen College greats fail and scrubs succeed. To me Case is a forgotten one, very good stats… but no consider a college great by many, because of where he plays and how they run their off system; this maybe certain… but I think Case has what it takes for the next level. (some team will draft him).

Draft Patrick Peterson and Chris Rucker.

by mikeinsp on Oct 24, 2010 8:45 PM PDT reply actions

I could see why the 49ers would want

Rucker at 6’2" but his suspension will probably scare teams off.

Quick question

who is Davis

Mallett, Peterson, Clayborn, and Davis.
Did you mean Amukamara.

by manraj7 on Oct 24, 2010 9:30 PM PDT reply actions

Herzilich is a 4-3 OLB not a 3-4 OLB

So I don’t think that he will be a great fit in our system.

by manraj7 on Oct 24, 2010 9:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Sorry I keep doing this I'm going through each round one by one

But in round 3 you say Acho is a DE he plays DE for a 4-3 if he was in our system he would be a 3-4 OLB. Good pick though.

Also in round 5 I think we should pick Kai “that kicker from UCLA” Forbath from UCLA. Dude hasn’t missed a kick inside the 50 yet and a large part of his kickoffs were touchbacks.

by manraj7 on Oct 24, 2010 9:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Also

Call me crazy but I think one of the top 3 QBs slip into the 2nd round.

by manraj7 on Oct 24, 2010 9:39 PM PDT up reply actions

I think is intangibles

His determination and his will would let him fit just as well in a 3-4 system.

by Rocky63215 on Oct 25, 2010 7:23 AM PDT up reply actions

That is true

but he makes plays in coverage, can hit hard, and I’m pretty sure he could play in the middle more effectively than Bowman.

by Rocky63215 on Oct 25, 2010 7:29 AM PDT up reply actions

So he would play ILB

OLB is still a bigger need than ILB

by manraj7 on Oct 25, 2010 7:30 AM PDT up reply actions

That is true

Then I could see the 49ers taking the big guy from Hampton, Ellis to replace Franklin who will more likely not be resigned although with his play he might not get as big of a contract as he previously thought.

by Rocky63215 on Oct 25, 2010 7:32 AM PDT up reply actions

RJF has been prepped to play NT

He has been playing well in the limited time he had. He got a sack vs the Raiders that game. I think that the main reason that he isn’t getting more playing time is that he doesn’t have enough experience.

by manraj7 on Oct 25, 2010 7:37 AM PDT up reply actions

I don't think

That RFJ is going to be the one to replace Franklin. Also, I don’t even remember seeing RJF on the field either.

options

First of all, THANK GOD fitzpatrick is looking really solid and he is doing it with a lame team so there is a small chance that the bills are NOT going to draft a QB (hope so)

I really like Andrew Luck! and he is the guy at the top of my list, and yes i know we have a lame secondary defense BUT!!! QB>>>>>>>>>CB but there are some QBs that im intrigued…

1.-Blaine Gabbert…. i like him BUT!!!! he comes from a spread offense just like Alex SMith but this guy is tough, this guy is a leader, this guy has a rocket… this guy is something else! and i think he is going to make it, but he is a project, but lets say if he declares for this draft i would pull the trigger. (2nd round or 3rd round) but he is a project.

2.-Stanzi Solid intangibles but thin frame so he might be injury prone like Alex but again he is a project.

3.-Jake Locker, ANOTHER! project but i really like him, he has a quick release, mobility, he is fast, he has a pretty good arm, and he has been playing for a team that has no weapons… He reminds me a lot of Steve young but just like steve, he needs a couple of years to develop.

CBs that i think are going to available in the 2nd round

Curtis Brown.
Playmaker but still raw.

Ras-i??? not sure if he is going to be available i think he is going to be a solid corner but lol nobody is going to like this comment but he reminds of Nate Clements.

and the guy from colorado but i cant remember his name haha.

by Xan101 on Oct 24, 2010 9:53 PM PDT reply actions

UGh

I’d hate it if we drafted a project QB. That’s why we have Nate Davis. We need someone who doesn’t suck NOW, not in 2-3 years.

by See Jay on Oct 25, 2010 4:37 AM PDT up reply actions

That's why

The 49ers need to sign a quarterback that’s a free agent for the 2011 season to develop the quarterback otherwise it will still be Smith starting.

by Rocky63215 on Oct 25, 2010 7:19 AM PDT up reply actions

Fitzagerald

he is playing pretty well in Buffalo. Its not his fault that his team can’t play D.

by manraj7 on Oct 25, 2010 7:20 AM PDT up reply actions

You mean

Fitzpatrick I could see the 49ers go after him if Kolb prices himself out the 49ers league.

by Rocky63215 on Oct 25, 2010 7:21 AM PDT up reply actions

Im not sure about that

Are they going to let a rookie play with a horrendous team like that? i dont think so, at least not right away…. FItzpatrick is going to “mentor” the new guy.

My option would be Hasselbeck, as long as the seahawks let him go.

by Xan101 on Oct 25, 2010 7:31 AM PDT up reply actions

I don't see

Hasselbeck leaving the Seahawks. Best option for the 49ers is to overpay Kolb.

by Rocky63215 on Oct 25, 2010 7:33 AM PDT up reply actions

Kolb is signed for a long term deal

and I don’t think Reid is going to trade him.

by manraj7 on Oct 25, 2010 7:38 AM PDT up reply actions

When did Kolb sign

an extension the only deal I found was his original deal with the team and then getting a one year deal for this season. He’s a free agent along with Vick.

by Rocky63215 on Oct 25, 2010 7:40 AM PDT up reply actions

disgusting

I’d have to seriously consider abandoning ship if the Niners traded for Kevin Kolb.

Game managers do not win championships unless they have the best defenses in NFL history. Kevin Kolb is a game manager.

Rays in '08.... Desmond Jennings - the breakout continues.....

by youALREADYknow on Oct 25, 2010 7:40 AM PDT up reply actions

Why not sign him?

The only other option truly to start is Smith. Unless the 49ers make a trade and I don’t see that happening.

Only other option for the 49ers would be the guy who just burned the defense, Matt Moore.

by Rocky63215 on Oct 25, 2010 7:43 AM PDT up reply actions

so he is hot and cold

just what we need another inconsistent player

by manraj7 on Oct 25, 2010 8:20 AM PDT up reply actions

To be fair, pretty much everyone besides Montana

has/had hot and cold days. Ideally your guy is hot much more often than not, but there are always cold days. Which is not to say that I want Kolb, just saying, you know, to be fair.

Manning is never cold during the regular season

and when he is cold he is above average.

Moore and Kolb don’t fit that category though if you guys want an elite QB you have to draft one not get them from FA.

by manraj7 on Oct 25, 2010 9:44 AM PDT up reply actions

I agree regarding Moore and Kolb.

As for Manning: Week 5 10/10 vs KC
26 of 44 59.1 244 yds 5.5 ypa 0 td 1 int 1 0 fumbles 65.0 passer rating.
That is a regular season cold game against a young secondary.

It would be awesome if we could get him.

We would have our QB and our OC all in one shot. We would just need a great DC and then it’s Super Bowl time!

But, why would the 49ers

Go after Manning to begin with he’s not going to be around much longer and I’m willing to be he is going to stick with the Colts anyways.

Does anyone think he’d even be as successful with the weak offensive line the 49ers have.

The only reason to draft Luck is because of his ability to run the football.

by Rocky63215 on Oct 25, 2010 11:37 AM PDT up reply actions

Yes Manning is awesome

Numerous times the Colts line is blitzed or broken and Manning is able to get the ball out. Besides he has a good 7 years in him.

by manraj7 on Oct 25, 2010 11:44 AM PDT up reply actions

let me put it this way

IF peyton gets injured the colts would get a top 5 pick in the draft thats a horrendous team.

by Xan101 on Oct 25, 2010 12:55 PM PDT up reply actions

The bills have no idea how to run rookies

They will throw Luck or Ponder into the fire especially if they have to pay them big bucks.

by manraj7 on Oct 25, 2010 7:38 AM PDT up reply actions

Ras-I Dowling

From the University of Virginia has the size, but his stock is dropping because he has hardly played this year. He had a chance to come out last year, but chose to stay in school. Unless he starts picking it up I could see him dropping even lower and then the 49ers may look at him in the third round.

Jimmy Smith would be another option in the second round, but does it make senses to take two corners in the first two rounds? Considering that the 49ers need a pass rusher either from the defensive end position or OLB position.

by Rocky63215 on Oct 25, 2010 7:27 AM PDT up reply actions

Ras-I Dowling

I would actually be pretty happy if we drafted him and he turned into a Nate Clements type of corner. I think Nate gets so much flack from our fan base because of his contract and the fact that he bites hard on double moves…and he pulled a Dre Bly by not securing the ball when Roddy Freakin White was on the field… However, despite Nate’s short-comings in coverage. He is still an above-average to good cornerback. Not only can he be decent for us in covering the opposing team’s number 1 receiver, he is also more than willing to come up and stop the run. He is in my opinion one of the best run-stopping corners in the game. He’s not great in coverage, but he’s still a number one corner on most teams in the league. So if we draft Ras-I, he would in essence be a younger, faster, and CHEAPER Nate Clements who has the potential to learn not to bite so hard on fakes. In my opinion, that’s a win-win all around.

by Mdizzle138 on Oct 25, 2010 11:48 AM PDT up reply actions

Clements

Does get flack for his contract he’s still the best corner the 49ers have.

Some good information here

I haven’t been following college football that closely so far this year, but the loss to the Panthers definitely got me thinking about the draft.

Right now I think if the 49ers had the chance to draft Andrew Luck in the first round it would be awfully hard to pass up. Doesn’t really have a cannon but seems like he can make all the throws, and I have been impressed by his accuracy and decision making which I like more in prospects than pure arm strength.

If the Niners can’t get luck I would rather see them go for a cornerback, I don’t really like the idea of using a high first round pick on a guy like Mallett or Locker. Both guys seem a little too raw for my taste, good measurables but a high first is a big investment to make based on the hope that you can teach a guy how to play the position.

Beyond those guys I can’t think of any QB’s that really stand out, what are the chances that Kellen Moore from Boise St. declares for the draft?

by OkayJay81 on Oct 25, 2010 12:34 AM PDT reply actions

Why would you want Moore?

He comes from that spread system that’s known not to translate well to the NFL.

by See Jay on Oct 25, 2010 4:37 AM PDT up reply actions

Well, I was just curious about opinions on Moore

But coming from a spread system shouldn’t automatically rule a guy out. Moore is in his third year starting for Boise St. and has been pretty successful from the second he set foot on that blue turf. Playing mostly WAC competition is a concern but over these last three years Boise has been successful when they have to play bigger teams. The only game I have gotten to see Moore play this year was the first game against Va Tech so I haven’t really got a good chance to evaluate him but I am intrigued.

The main point is that if the Niners are looking at taking a QB who is going to need some serious development time I would be more interested in trying to find a lesser heralded guy in the middle rounds than use a first on Mallett or Locker.

by OkayJay81 on Oct 25, 2010 10:57 AM PDT up reply actions

Moore can make the throws

He has a much better throwing arm than Tebow, he’s successful, and he’s tough. That’s why the 49ers should look to the mid-rounds to draft a quarterback to groom them for the future.

Rather then drafting a quarterback in the first round and set them up for failure by rushing them into fold.

by Rocky63215 on Oct 25, 2010 11:38 AM PDT up reply actions

Yea, I haven't really seen his name pop up too much in preliminary draft talk

That’s kind of why I brought him up here to see if anybody knew what he was planning. He is just a junior but he redshirted his freshman years so this is his 4th year in college. Who knows, maybe if he can lead Boise to a BCS championship he decides to cash out and try his luck in the pros.

by OkayJay81 on Oct 25, 2010 12:37 PM PDT up reply actions

Even if Moore's a junior

He can still enter, he may not. Who knows? Still Kaepernick has four years experience at Nevada, he’s tough, and he’s got a good arm.

by Rocky63215 on Oct 25, 2010 2:31 PM PDT up reply actions

His throwing motion is better than Tebow's

but Tebow has a much stronger arm than Moore.

I like Moore and I think he’s a good college QB but he’ll get destroyed in the NFL because of the way his passes float.

by smileyman on Oct 25, 2010 6:20 PM PDT up reply actions

That is true

But, that could be righted with a quarterbacks coach rather quickly. At least I would assume so.

Kaepernick can make all the throws and when I saw him against California he did not float the ball in either.

NO MORE MALLETT TALK

Stop talking about Ryan Mallett! He is a statue, with poor footwork and poor decision making. Watch a few of his games, not his stats. All he does is throw to a spot. He’s got a rocket for an arm, but that is all. If you think Alex Smith needed time to work on his footwork, imagine a slower version of Smith who also isn’t asked to read defenses. Luck is good, but Locker will be the best of the bunch. Don’t just look at his stats. His receivers cannot catch, they drop passes religiously. He also has no OL protection, which means he has no time to throw and will pretty much be used to it when our OL lets in two guys a series. Locker has the intellect, footwork, arm and pocket presence to become a very good to elite NFL QB. If you watch any of his games, he makes all the throws and can fit the ball into the tight window needed at the next level. Neither Mallett or Luck, especially Mallett have proven they can do it. In fact, Mallett cannot. Yes, Locker had a bad game against Nebraska, and he made a poor decision on an interception, but his receivers dropped passes and he was dodging 2 to 3 pass rushers every time he threw. He will be the perfect West Coast Offense QB. If I am the Niners, I fire Sing and offer Gruden whatever he wants and I seriously entertain trading Gore. Call up the Pats they have 8 picks in the first 4 rounds. This team needs a QB, CB, OLB, NT, and S… Smith, Clements, Lawson, Franklin and Goldson will all most likely be gone. We need to trade Gore and stockpile picks in this draft., and this draft is loaded with playmakers. Imagine if we get Gruden, implement the WCO again (we have every single play we ran in the WCO from 79-99, including the playoffs, in a vault, so we can go back to it and Gruden knows how to run it with his days with Holmgren), draft Locker and then either a CB like Peterson, Amukamara, or Dowling in the first round from an extra 1st round pick from a Gore trade, draft a OLB, NT, G, in the later rounds with our picks and an extra pick or two from a Gore trade. Look, I love Gore, but we have to pull a Cowboy Herschel Walker move to upgrade the team. We can sign a FA QB to tutor Locker. Drastic things need to be done. At best, it is apparent they are an average football team. Average football teams should never be acceptable in SF. We had an identity, I suggest we go back to it and rebuild. It can happen, by firing Sing, hiring Gruden, implementing the WCO, drafting Locker, and trading Gore. Sounds like a lot, but it’s the only chance to be great again. By the way, it’lll take 3 years to be SB contenders, but all our playmakers will be in their primes at that point, so it’ll be worth it!

Could probably use some spacing.

Anyway, I don’t think that we could get a 1st for Frank. I love the guy, and he is a great player, but it just seems like there is not a huge demand for 27 year old running backs with a history of injury, at least not for a 1st round pick. I could be wrong, but it seems unlikely. Also, I would kind of like to keep Gore in San Francisco for a while longer.

Gore has been healthy

For much of his career. Yes, he had an injury history in college, but not really in the pros unless sprained ankles are considered injury proned. The 49ers are not going to trade Gore either. He’s too valuable. Dixon is not ready he proved that as he has been an ineffective blocker.

by Rocky63215 on Oct 25, 2010 7:22 AM PDT up reply actions

That's what I meant.

He has missed a couple games each season since 2006. I guess I should have specified that his “history of injury” was actually a “history of minor injuries”. I agree that we ought to keep him for as long as he wants to stay, or at least as long as he can play at a high level.

Don't think it's necessary to trade Gore for picks

Besides, he won’t get us a whole lot of value. Teams will always feel they can draft a guy and make him work. Trade deadline is past, so it wouldn’t happen until the off season.

I’m not so sure hiring Gruden is the way to go either. I do like the idea of returning to the WCO, but let’s think this through a bit. Gruden was handed a team built by Dungy, he never developed a young QB in all his years, he just went after veteran guys. If he’s hired, I’ll give him a chance, but I’m not sold on him now.

He is worth more to us than to other teams.

but really good rbs

are a dime a dozen. frank is getting old. he’s still one of the best, but his value inevitably has declined due to the physical demands of his position, and his age. right now we’re riding frank into the ground.

Alex Smith is garbage...

Locker

Is the most inconsistent out of the big three, truthfully I’d rather have Kaepernick and under the radar prospect. He’s good, he can make all the throws, but he can also pull down the run.

Again if you look if the 49ers make the selections the team improves at the CB, OLB, FS, MLB, WR, and at QB even if it takes one to two years for Kaepernick to develop.

QB, GOLDSON

We must get Deshon "CRUSH"EM" Goldson on a long time contract to stay in Gold Rush Country. Why would we let this guy walk as he and Mays are young and can hit like no other and draft young guys for the Defensive Backfield, and the one that is driving me crazy as our QB TO LEAD THIS YOUNG TEAM IS ON THE PRACTICE SQUAD NATE "SAVE"US" DAVIS, GIVE HIM A SHOT AS IT CAN’T HURT. CARR ISN’T THE ANSWER, EVEN THOUGH HE NEEDS A FEW MORE GAMES TO GIVE HIM A FAIR SHOT BUT ND IS THE GUY. SING PISSES ME OFF SO BAD AS I DON’T KNOW WHY HE DOESN’T GIVE HIM A SHOT. THE TREE CAN CATCH ANYTHING AND HE IS NOT GETTING THE BALL THROWN HIS WAY AT ALL MOST OF THE GAMES AND YES HE GOT A TD LAST WEEK BUT HE SHOULD GET 12 OR MORE THROWN HIS WAY AS HE HAS MAGNET’S FOR HANDS. HE WILL WALK IF WE DON’T THROW MORE HIS WAY. SHUT ME UP SING AND JUST GIVE NATE DAVIS A SHOT AS THE OC IS DOING A SOLID JOB CALLING THE PLAYS AS HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN THERE DAY 1. WE ARE 3 GAMES BEHIND SS AND THEY ARE PLAYING GOOD BALL. NATE WILL WIN GAMES AS THE DEFENSE IS DOING GREAT EXCEPT FOR THE SECONDARY AT TIMES.

Draft TeJay Johnson

Who actually can play coverage and also hit. If the 49ers do not draft a free safety then sign Eric Weddle who will be a free agent. He is far superior to Goldson.

Its all about Andrew Luck

Andrew Luck has the tools and the mind to succeed. I say Draft Luck, fire Sing and hire Gruden. Gruden will implement a west coast offense with lots of play actions an area where Andrew Luck excels.

Other then that, if I were the Niners I would do my best to resign Goldson.

The Niners are not that far off, they have lost 4 games by a field goal or less. The inability to close games comes down to our lack of good QB play, confidence in our Head Coach and our lack of a dominant Pass Rusher who scares offenses.

I don't see Luck as an option

In my opinion he doesn’t have enough experience. Name a game at Stanfod where he has come up with a win in a big game? He maybe a redshirt sophomore, but he has very limited action and reminds me a lot of what Alex Smith was at Utah.

One big year and was drafted number one. How has Smith worked out?

by Rocky63215 on Oct 25, 2010 2:33 PM PDT up reply actions

He is nothing like Alex Smith

He had one bad game last year and that was versus CAL. He had 27 tds against 4 interceptions with a pro style offense and a head coach that was an NFL QB. Alex Smith ran a spread offense with runs that were read options. He has come up big in all of his games this year, even versus the Ducks which is his only loss so far. The dude can play. He lacks other NFL talent around him and still Stanford is a top-15 team in a good conference.

Really?

How have the running quarterbacks faired in the NFL? Unless Luck magically turns into the next Steve Young he’s going to struggle in the NFL.

lol

So you think he is a running QB?!! smh

by Xan101 on Oct 25, 2010 7:04 PM PDT up reply actions

yeah

ive seen him play at every home game since last year and he is unbelievable.
he is the kind of qb that can come in as a rookie and start right away.

I've seen him play too

Again he needs more experience. Look at Locker he could have come out last year, but decided to stay at Washington for another year.

I know this thread is about drafting rookies...

but I would really like to see more veteran leadership. In my opinion, that is our biggest weakness. I would be very happy to see the Niners give up a couple of picks for some solid older guys who can mentor the youth on our roster. I would like to see Peterson drafted in the first (depending on where we wind up at) and then do what they have to do to bring in some solid leadership. Especially on the line and in the secondary. I don’t know who would be available by the offseason but any player that has gotten used to winning and can lead our younger guys would be a be a huge boost. Think of what Sharper did with NO.

I was going to write about the 2011 free agents in a couple of days.

by Rocky63215 on Oct 25, 2010 6:38 PM PDT up reply actions

Im on the Lucky train..

If we go after Luck in the first and then a shut-down corner in the second, we can still weigh out the possibility of a pass-rushing 3-4 DE in the 3rd-4th(any 1st-round talents on “smaller school” football teams out there?) I say keep Alex and start him until Luck is ready, or somehow acquire another veteran QB via free agency cuz Carr isnt the answer. If all else fails…., START NATE! and all our problems will be solved
