Really, I do.
I feel as though I've been tricked by the organization, the talent, and even the media.
Everyone talked up the improved performance at the end of the 2008 season and what a difference Singletary made with Vernon Davis. It seemed as though he was exactly the right coach for an underperforming team. What went wrong?
Turns out that the team wasn't underachieving under Nolan... it was under talented and disinterested in a head coach who didn't earn his players respect.
They certainly respect Singletary but they realized last year what we're all realizing this year: that he isn't a very good head coach. He couldn't attract quality coordinators and had to settle for Raye and Manusky. They did okay last year with the remnants of the former (Nolan and Martz) coaches schemes. Once they put their own schemes in place, we got a look at what the niners really are: a bad team.
They are prone to penalties, missed assignments, and over-aggressive play on defense. Not to mention they are poorly schemed, utterly undisciplined, and under talented.
On offense they underutilize their talent, don't have a true starting QB, scheme poorly, are sloppy, and have two rookies on their O-line.
After the fact it's obvious that this isn't a very good team but I bought what they were selling and now I feel like an idiot.
It's true that after game one I saw the light, for a moment. Then, unable to admit my foolishness, I convinced myself that they could get better and that they were in a weak enough division to still pull out a win. How wrong I was. How wrong we all were.
I no longer feel dumb. Now I'm angry. I'm angry that an organization as storied as ours can't attract top-notch talent to our front-office and coaching staff. I'm angry at ownership. They've failed the fans and they've sullied the reputation of what I believe was the finest organization in football. They need to pay and I for one will not buy a single ticket to a game, television package, or merchandise until ownership changes its conduct or the ownership itself changes.
I want winners. This city deserves it and demands it.
