Just an observation which has little to do with today's result but rather all four games we've seen so far by the 49ers this season... We all know Willis was signed to a big time contract extension before the start of the regular season and big things are expected from this guy. There's no question he's one of the best linebackers in football and as much as I hate to say this: we still need a lot more from this guy. It's one thing to be a great player but it's another to be a great player and a great leader. If there was ever going to be 'another' Ray Lewis, I would say Patrick Willis has the best chance to do so than any other linebacker in the NFL. But what separates Ray and Willis are their leadership roles within the team. Willis is a more reserved and collected guy in warm-ups and on the sidelines whereas Ray is always fired up before a game and is always finding ways to motivate players with his talk and his play. I'm a huge fan of Patrick Willis but he's never going to be a champion until he becomes a bigger leader for that defense. I have a hard time believing the 49ers would be a respectable defense with Willis out of that lineup. He's our best and most important player but he needs to step up now to turn this team around defensively. He has all the physical attributes and understands the mentality of the game but sometimes its takes a little more to become a champion. I am of course talking about the intangibles: the willingness to win, dedication, determination, intensity on a play-by-play basis, etc.. If he can't lead, the team just won't win. We need more from this guy, and we just haven't seen it yet. Ray Lewis is the undisputed leader and face of the Baltimore Ravens franchise, Willis doesn't quite have that kind of recognition yet but hopefully he will sooner rather than later.
