Enough of the "F"isical football... we need SMART football

I am all for intensity and Fisical football, but this team cannot run on rah rah coaching. Singletary needs to take a step back and become a coach. If he cannot do it we at least know where we can find a pregame or halftime motivator. Someone needs to teach these players how to win and if Singletary can't teach, only motivate..., I believe Coach Gruden and Cowher are available and can do both.

Star-divide

I hate to put the blame directly on Singletary but when I saw him on one knee after the game I stopped seeing him as a coach and saw a disappointed cheerleader.. but since he's the coach he will ultimately have to pay for the teams mental lapses.  These players should understand what their record is, what is going on in the game, their division and ultimately the conference. We cannot blame the offense, defense or special teams, I believe they did a decent job putting themselves in a place to win the game.

The offense moved the ball adequately and scored on their opening drive, hopefully MJ will have more time to work with the offense and script more plays... but we cannot overlook that the falcons defense is pretty good. They beat the Saints, kept the Cardinals and Steelers under 10 points. Our D, intercepted the ball twice, sacked Ryan 3 times and did not allow Turner to go over 50 yds or score. The special teams did not fumble a punt or kickoff and blocked a punt and scored a TD.  We played good enough to win.

We need to put blame on individual players going out there to show off. Bly who is no longer here made the same mistake. His antics (against the same team!!) costs us a huge possession and ultimately the game.. even though it was a blow out... Clements was there wasn't he? Why not protect the ball and let Gore go to work so that we can win a road game... does he not understand what this would mean in the conference, our division or for his team? Do YOU really need to score? How many neutral zone infractions cost us points? How many false starts cost us yards? How many times have we seen a WR drop a ball? These mental errors should be the main emphasis by coaches not physicality. These mistakes have been going on since last year and Singletary was the constant in this equation.

Next week we have the Vick-less Eagles, which is a good thing (understatement of the year). I believe most of the players have bought into Singletary's Fisical mindset, now it's time he teaches them the mental game involved in winning football games, but if he can't the FO needs to get involved and find a coach that can.  But really this falls on the payers they need to make a stand. If they really respect Singletary they have to: "win one for the skipper." They owe him, they owe us. If they don't...., the FO should start to inquire if Chucky or the Chin are willing to lead us to the promise land. Maybe then Singletary will be able to see what a winning team is all about and not just stare into the ground with disappointment, that is what players and fans do coach. Head coaches lead with their heads high, graciously taking another defeat, not showing the troops their true feelings.. ready to get the troops fired up for another home game against a formidable team. Singletary obviously does not have a good poker face and his hand may not be not good enough to beat him being flushed even with him holding plenty of heart. We need a HEADcoach not a Fisical, Cheer or Heart coach, that should be left to the trainer, goldrush member and fan not the man in charge.

Right on the nail

I totally agree with you. I’m starting to think physical football means doing stupid stuff like hitting guys after the play is over and roughing penalties etc. Basically meathead football. This team makes waaay too many mental errors and for a guy who preaches discipline like Sing, it’s ridiculous. Honestly I really don’t know if Sing is capable of being a HC anymore. Watching other coaches you can see them on sideline talking to assistants and players figuring out how to win the game but with Sing all I’ve seen is him standing there like a spectator. If I didn’t know who Sing looked like I wouldn’t be able to tell him apart from a regular niner staffer on the sideline. He just looks like he’s watching the game, not coaching it. And I’m a Sing and Smith supporter too.

by afrikabamboodle on Oct 4, 2010 12:30 AM PDT reply actions

exactly my point… he’s the first to greed the players when they make a play and the last to talk to coaches to figure out how to win. He is on an island he created… and it seems he doesn’t recognize the importance of managing the game or the players.

Joe and Steve were under the same system for years... don't expect ___?__ to be super so soon. Alex Smith is no longer expected to do much for this team in the future... on to the next one!!

How do you know this? The only coach that has received this public criticism was Raye.

Sing is no dumber or smarter a HC if Clements doesn’t fumble and/or Smith makes one less mistake yesterday. If this team had a better, not great just better, QB then they would be 3-1 and the perception of SIng and his staff would be different even though they are the same coaches doing the same thing.

Anyone of three screw ups cost us the game!

The Smith interception just before halftime was a potential 10 point swing, the intentional grounding cost us a possible field goal, and all Clements had to do was to secure the ball after the interception and we run out the clock. The only one that really bothers me is the Clements strip, he’s a seasoned vet who’se heard a thousand times about ball security and should not make that mistake. Smith is another matter, at times he plays just well enough to give us hope and then drives that stake through our hearts with stupid plays. A good QB always seems to find a way to win, Smith always finds a way to lose! We’ve come to expect this from him on a weekly basis so it’s not the let down it should be. This is one loss I wont blame on Singletary!

by mensa on Oct 4, 2010 12:59 AM PDT reply actions

Intentional grounding?

I don’t know why this is constantly mentioned. It was not relevant. Without the grounding it would have been a sack, a loss of 7 or 8 yards, and 4th down. With the grounding it was a loss of 5 yards (the penalty) and 4th down. It made no difference.

by HighFive on Oct 4, 2010 3:34 AM PDT up reply actions

and had it been incomplete it still would of been a 52 yard field goal.

by mikeinsp on Oct 4, 2010 7:33 AM PDT up reply actions

Wrong

Intentional grounding is a 10-yard penalty.

by 5e3deluxe on Oct 4, 2010 7:45 AM PDT up reply actions

Right, my error,

but so what, the sack would have put the team out of FG range. At least, with the questionable shuffle pass there was an attempt to keep the FG a possibility.

by HighFive on Oct 4, 2010 3:34 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree-

that too much is being made of the IG call. what really bothers me about that play was that the blitz was obvious. The safety was timing his blitz on the snap count, and Alex knew Gore was headed for the flat and wouldn’t be in on protection. did he not see the safety running toward him on the pre-snap read?

He should have responded better to the blitz. And what’s more….he rolled right, like always. the defender was even prepared for that by biasing his blitz to alex’s right.

alex made his bed on that one.

by t p on Oct 4, 2010 4:16 PM PDT up reply actions

It was a screen pass

Perfect call for a blitz, if the OL slows down the guy running full speed. To the credit of the defender, he timed it well so that his momentum could not be stopped and the OL could not audible their protection scheme.

Alex has to trust his OL, which everyone wants him to do, thus he had to let the play develop. This led to the grounding call. If he throws it away too quickly, assuming the blitzer gets through, we’re all yelling about him rolling right and throwing it away. Alex tried to save the play by throwing it away. Give credit to Atlanta and some blame to our OL on that play. Feel free to criticize Alex on others.

S0 you want to exchange one slogan for another?

That makes you sound like the cheerleader. It’s not that Sing or his staff (now that Raye is gone) don’t know how to win or what it takes to win. It’s not that they don’t communicate it to the players. They’re missing two key things that tend to cost any team close games: consistently good play from the QB, and a dominant pass rusher. Without those things you’re not going to change the results no matter who the HC is.

You gotta bring ass to get ass.

by SpurredOn on Oct 4, 2010 2:51 AM PDT reply actions

this isn’t about having a slogan… a commitment to excellence is simply put laughable… my point is the mental part of the game is being ignored because he demands his team to be physical. All I’m saying is “I get it!!” Football is a physical sport. But to quote Steve Emtman in “Little Giants”: Just remember, football is 80% mental and 40% physical. Bill Walsh demanded his team to be prepared and they won 3 Super Bowls. Dikta demanded physicality they only won once. The math is simple… we need smart football.

Joe and Steve were under the same system for years... don't expect ___?__ to be super so soon. Alex Smith is no longer expected to do much for this team in the future... on to the next one!!

Bill Walsh demanded his team to be prepared and they won 3 Super Bowls. Dikta demanded physicality they only won once. The math is simple… we need smart football.

Walsh had Montana, Rice, Lott, Wright, Craig, Jones, Taylor, Rice, Young, Rice, Montana, Rice, and Montana.
Ditka had Peyton, Dent, Singletary, Perry, and McMahon.

The math is, indeed, simple. If you’ve got one of the top 5 QBs of all time and the top receiver/football player of all time, combined with a great defense, and great surrounding players, you’re going to win a few championships. If not, you might win one.

Trust me, learning english isn’t a waste of time. It is actually sort of useful.

Walsh's teams were physical. The media ignored this as a descriptive term for a west coast team

Parcells wanted his teams physical. Same for Cowher, who many people now want as out HC. Harbaugh in Baltimore. Tomlin in Pittsburgh. These coaches all stress being a physical team and out-physicalling their opponent. At some point you have to look at the players.

You gotta bring ass to get ass.

by SpurredOn on Oct 4, 2010 1:54 PM PDT up reply actions

At some point..

You actually have to do more than lip service as a HC. The 49ers have gotten softer due to lack or proper strategy. You should know this, but I can see why you don’t.

sings thinking

In the postgame press meeting Sing got asked what he’ll be focusing on to prevent those mental mistakes that are costing the team games. This is what he had to say:

Simpletary: Well it’s really not “mental focus”; it’s not mental errors, that you’re making – it’s more fysical. You know holding the ball is a physical thing: you gotta hold the ball tight. It’s not like we are not holding the ball – we were holding it —; but we have to secure the ball. And I think when Alex is playing he just gotta make better decisions. That’s not really a mental thing. …

Smart? Not mental? Ph…f…ysical?

Enough of the "F"isical football… we need SMART football

Exactly.

There are physical mistakes and mental mistakes

By physical he meant and error with your body instead of you mind. Mental is misreading a coverage or lining up in the wrong spot. Physical is not tucking away to ball or using poor technique in your blocking. Please tell me you know this and have heard it used in sports before?

You gotta bring ass to get ass.

by SpurredOn on Oct 4, 2010 1:56 PM PDT up reply actions

As far as my understanding goes...

1. … holding the ball is truly a physical thing, whereas knowing when its important to hold on to the ball must a mental thing. Even if it’s something that happens in split seconds it’s something that can be trained — mentally.
2. … making decisions is clearly not a physical, but a mental thing.

mental means psychic, right? and it’s opposed to physical (in western thinking/language/philosophy).

Being that tucking away the ball should based on repetition

I’d call it physical. Perhaps both. But it’s not Sing being difficult by trying to emphasize “fyshical” play as you stated.

Please spare me, the errors in this game are both mental and physical.

At some point the players have to do what they need to do. Every successful team has a leader. Willis isn’t Vocal, and Davis is trying but, it’s needed from our QB, and since he can’t do it by example, we have 0 on field leadership. no one wants to step up and be accountable for keeping players in line until the post game presser.
