5 Things To Look For: Eagles-49ers
It's been a tough start of the season. With 2 heartbreaking losses and 2 humiliations the team is at 0-4 and will be taking on the 2-2 Eagles.
There have been some positives, and some negatives, actually a lot of negatives. From Alex Smith to Nate Clements. But all that has been discussed, what we should be talking about is what we should be looking for Sunday night.
Can Alex Smith bounce back at home?
Alex obviously played the best game of his career in prime time at home against a good defense. Well it's the same situation this week. But can he do it again? The only way he could is by playing smart football and not making stupid throws. He leads the league in interceptions which is a huge problem, obviously. Frank Gore can't carry this team to the playoffs. Alex must make good throws if he wants to win and have a job after the year.
Has the offensive line finally fixed their problems?
They have had 2 good games, and 2 bad games. For some reason, there good performances have been against two legitimate playoff teams. We'll see if they can give Alex time to throw and limit the pressure. But of course that probably won't matter if we can't get the run game going. They have to create holes and push the guys on the defensive line around. I like what I'm seeing from Anthony Davis, on numerous occasions I've seen him not give up on a play and continue to try to block someone even if it looks as if the the ball carrier is going down. He, and Mike Iupati, have improved from week 1. They are getting better and better every week. Chilo Rachal has obviously performed the worst so far. But was replaced by Adam Snyder last week.
Will Mike Johnson try to get Vernon Davis and Michael Crabtree the ball more?
In the first half of the Atlanta game. He did just that. Michael Crabtree caught 4 passes for first downs. Davis had a touchdown. But they were no where to be found in the second. This needs to change. They are our best play makers in the passing game. Even Josh Morgan has had only 3 catches the last 2 weeks. If you give your play makers the ball, that's what they'll do, make plays.
Can Nate Clements continue his performance?
Minus the fumble of course. He was having a very good game. Numerous nice tackles. Good coverage, and an interception. We need him to do this against DeSean Jackson. Contain DeSean, and contain their offense. If he plays like he did Sunday more, then he will more then likely be back. But if he has a bad season and gives up too many yards and touchdowns, he won't.
Who will step up on the defense?
I don't know what happened. We were considered a top-10 defense but are now bottom 10. We have created 4 turnovers, all on interceptions. Shawntae Spencer and Clements have 2 each. But that's it. No forced fumbles. None. Zero. Zilch. Nada. With guys like Patrick Willis, Dashon Goldson, and Justin Smith, that is completely unacceptable. Someone, anyone, needs to create some turnovers. But, in the secondaries defense. They have gotten no help from the pass rush. Parys Haralson, Travis LaBoy, and Willis have a total of 5 sacks. Which is good. But where are the other guys? Manny Lawson? Justin Smith? Again, someone, anyone, needs to create some pressure.
The 49ers host the Philadelphia Eagles Sunday night on NBC at 5:15 pm.

5 things to look for against the Eagles
1. Will Mike Vick play?
2. Will Mike Vick be healthy enough to run if he plays?
Rinse and repeat.
The Eagles are flat out terrible with Kevin Kolb at QB. I’ve seen every single Eagles snap this season and there’s no way we don’t get 2-3 INTs against Kolb if we can keep a lead throughout this game. He stares down every single target, is terrible at progressing through his receivers downfield, and has questionable accuracy beyond 30 yards.
The key will be scoring first. If we score first, then we will win. If they score first, then get ready for nothing but screen passes and passes to FB/TE all day long. The good news there is that Patrick Willis and Taylor Mays will impale anything short and across the middle.
Without Vick, I feel better about this game than any other game on the schedule this season. If they also don’t have McCoy, then this is by far the easiest game on the schedule. And if we lose with both Vick and McCoy out, then we need to start preparing for the #1 pick in the draft.
Gore should have a field day against the Eagles run defense as well.
Rays in '08.... Desmond Jennings - the breakout continues.....
the same it has been all season
Don’t give away the game with silly turnovers.
Gore, Westbrook, and Dixon should get a combined 50 carries next week. There’s no reason to put this game in Alex Smith’s hands with the kind of pressure that Philly can generate.

I disagree that we should give Gore, Westbrook, and Dixon the ball 50 times. What’s the point of having Vernon Davis then? Or Michael Crabtree? What’s the point of having any receivers if we just run the ball 90% of the time?
Blocking on the edge?

Eagles run defense
Has been terrible this season. You play to win the game. You don’t play to make everyone happy.
Plus, what has been the point in having VD and Crabtree so far this year to date? They have been undermined by poor QB play and poor play calling.
Guys will still get catches, pass plays will still be called. And yes, 50 was a bit of an exaggeration but still we shouldn’t see anything under 30 rushing plays.
If the Niners can dominate time of possession then Kolb would be forced to take chances downfield with less clock to burn. That’s the key to beating the Eagles this week IMO.

This team plays up (or down) to the (perceived) level of their opponents
thus the blowout in Seattle, the close game vs the Saints, the blowout in KC and the close game vs the Falcons.
I expect another close game but I don’t know if we can prevent the mistakes.
+1 too
In fact, badly timed mistakes are quickly becoming Singletary’s trademark.
Preparation has to be more than motivational speeches.
Sing is singing his final songs. Alex is a journeyman. I want to see a change as soon as possible for both of them. My bet is that BEFORE this season ends our HC is gone and Alex is on the bench.
If we have a losing season
he’s history. He’s a good guy and I have alot of respect for him but I really have my doubts about his ability as HC. I would really love for him to vaporize my doubts.

hmmm it's still early
we’re in a terrible division, and there’s still alot of football to be played….when the season’s over, what will be will be…i’d pause all judgements till then….
Alex Smith's second pass.
I actually give him some credit on the first one. Yeah it was a stupid attempt and he should have tucked it away, but it showed he has fire and competitiveness.
The second throw on the other hand is clearly due to his lack of development. A time tested veteran would have looked off the defender making it impossible to leave Vernon uncovered.
That play was actually quite good and I’d like to see it again. Smith basically should have just thrown to Vernon on the outside! The problem was he looked right and came back left. Had he looked left from the beginning he would have noticed the LB cheating towards the middle GIVING VD the edge! If he had thrown to Vernon there was a good chance he takes that corner for a huge gain. I really like those routes. This will take some time until those plays have “tendencies” that are actually good for us.
I don’t think that at all… and of course this is all speculation on your behalf

So true when they showed the replay you could clearly see Vernon open in the flat, but I guess Alex didn't see that

Am I the only one who thinks it wouldn’t be a bad idea to stare down the DB and take what he gives you? I mean, if you’re staring right at him and he’s watching you, he might just stop, leaving both options open or he’ll turn and run with his main responsibility, leaving the other option open. Right? Am I crazy?
