Fun 49ers facts!
Fun fact #1
# of opponents drives that have started with under 2 minutes left in a half in which the other team tried to score: 6*
# times scored on those drives:5
Points scored on those drives: 19
* - This counts Nate Clements' interception as stopping a drive and his fumble starting another drive. In other words, they've had 6 drives against them, stopped one, and gifted it right back.
Our defense has had 5 opportunities to stop an opponent from scoring with under 2 minutes left in a half. They haven't stopped any of them. They've given up drives of 13, 51, 44, 49, and 68. Bold underlined drives are game winning drives. Furthermore, they failed to stop the Saints from running out the clock at the end of the first half when they had a chance to get the offense the ball back in great field position.
Look, defense has certainly been better than the offense. However, they're unable to stop an opponent who has to score. Our defense is in the bottom third of the league in all significant statistical categories. Our offense has been at least equally bad, but let's not say our offense is letting our defense down. They are both letting each other down. Our defense has given up 24, 25, 31, and 16 points. That's nothing to hang your hat on. Our opponents' QBs have a fantastic 95 QB rating and are completing 67% of their passes. Sure, we've played Drew Brees and Matt Ryan... but they made Matt Cassel look like a superstar as well.
This is not to say our offense isn't to blame, or that there are serious question marks about Alex Smith's future as an NFL QB and as a 49er. It's meant to balance the discussion here. Our defense is playing like:
And there's no getting around it. If our defense was who we thought they were, we'd potentially be sitting at 2-2 with two great wins against quality teams and two confusing losses... thinking that "If our offense gets even a little in gear, we're going to be scary in the playoffs!"
Instead, our offense is this big questionmark of inconsistency, while our defense is good, not great, until it matters... when they turn back into a pumpkin.
Fun fact #2
First half scoring (49ers-opponents): 30-43
Second half scoring (49ers-opponents): 22-60*
* - Second half scoring includes the infamous "last play injurious TD" from the Chiefs game.
In short, we're pretty competitive in the first half, only being outscored by 3 points per game. Then, we're getting dominated in the second half. When you account for the fact that of the 43 points our opponents have scored in first halves, 13 have come in the last two minutes, we're playing the first 28 minutes of the game even with our opponents (who currently have a 11-4 record, 7-4 against other opponents, and include last year's super bowl winner, the team that beat last year's super bowl winner, and the last remaining undefeated team). Our opponents have not been slouches, and we've played 3 tough road games. I can't explain what's happening, but we're tied 30-30 after 28 minutes, and losing the rest of the meaningful minutes 15-73 (ignoring Josh Morgan's meaningless TD at the end of the Chiefs game).
This team falls apart. The offense sputters in the second half, the defense opens up, and the defense can't stop anybody under 2 minutes.
Fun fact #3
The 49ers start the youngest offense in the NFL. Let's just say they're still growing together. Given this fact, and the fact that the O Line is comprised of 2 rookies and is missing its elder statesman/starting center, there's plenty of reason to hope that things will get better going forward. They offense needs time to gel. They need to learn a lot, and it's a difficult situation for a QB to work with if you don't know if you can trust your WRs and linemen to be where they need to be and block who they need to block. I'm not making excuses for Alex Smith, he certainly has his fair share of the faults in the failures, but he's by far not the only problem with our offense and our team. What the Niners need now is leadership, not panic. This is still true.
I still see silver linings: We've played some really tough competition, far and away the toughest quarter of our schedule. We're only 2 games back in our division with 5 division games left to play, so we can easily make up that ground. Our offense looked much better than in previous games... they didn't come away with any more points or yards, but it looked better from what I saw. The defense wasn't simply able to dictate everything that happened. They converted a few third downs. With another week in the Mike Johnson version of the Jimmy Raye system, I think we'll see even more wrinkles and even more success. We still have tons of talent on both sides of the ball. And we still play in the NFC West.

Good post.
It’s scary to think that we’re still competitive thanks to our crappy division. Not that I mind.
I think consistency is the biggest issue. What we need most is consistency throughout the entire game, because those second half numbers look absurd compared to the first half numbers.
THEN we’ll be able to work on game to game consistency…which is also a problem. We’re competitive one week, and the next it’s like we shouldn’t have even showed up.
Also good to point out that while Alex hasn’t been good, it isn’t all on him. Just a lot of it.
Once this team fixes the problems the seem to mainly be between the ears, I think we’ll do much better. The question is when…
I think it'll happen once they stop playing against some of the toughest competition in the NFL
And they stop playing in some of the toughest road stadiums to play in. Remaining road games:
@CAR – Not going to be a “rocking” place, what with their impending 0-5 record.
@ London (neutral) – Neutral site, should be loud, but not “road game” loud.
@ARI – Always tough to play on the road in division, but… this team is coming apart at the seams.
@GB – A good team, very dedicated fans, and a game that we’ll probably lose. But remember that their stadium is really old and not built to keep in the noise.
@SD – A tough place to play… but it’s not like we won’t be used to the weather.
@STL – Tough roadie in conference. Hopefully, we’ll have enough film on Bradford that he’ll have hit that rookie wall.
I can see us going 3-3 or better in these games. That means if we go 6-1 down the stretch at home, we’ll be 9-7 or better. They still need to, you know, not play sucky at some point.

The games we have been playing
Very interesting #’s and I think you bring up some really solid points and really appreciate your time in putting this together.
I would like to broach 1 subject and this playing as well in the second 1/2, then we did in the first. Teams are supposed to go and get fired up during 1/2 time, we seem to lose it all at 1/2 time (Not counting 2 minute no huddle drives) Defense gets sloppy, offense gets sloppy, even special teams fall off a little bit. Are these guys just too worn out from being overworked in preseason, having a pretty damn hard schedule to open up the calendar (not only opponents, but time in between games, and too many road games.
Also: With Gore being on the field as much as he is, do you think that slows him down in the 2nd half. I mean they use him so much for both running and receiving in the 1st 1/2 every game, but then he just doesn’t seem to be there as much in the 2nd 1/2..Maybe its just me and i am delusional, but using Westbrook and Coffee more in the 1st 1/2 would help gore in the later game. Yesterday I was surprised not to see VD more, and that Crabtree was doing pretty well for himself..Maybe they just had VD blanketed that well, and fo course Morgan didn’t really do a lot out there minus a catch or two (Honestly wanna see more Ziggy Stardust (Ziegler) out there.
Just my $0.02..I could be wrong

Coffee’s retired. I’d tend not to think Gore’s getting tired. He seems like the type to wear down opposing defenses.
This last game was a little wonky. In the second half, we had 4 drives, they had 4 too. We used over 16:45 of clock. We had one 3 & out all day. The biggest thing that seems to stand out is that they consistently started over their 30 yard line, while we started over our 30 yard line once, at the 31. It’s not like the offense stagnated in the second half like it has in the past… it just didn’t put points on the board. They got into Atlanta territory on 3 of the 4 drives in the second half… but came away with zero points. The offense did everything you could ask it to do in the second half, except score. They ate up the clock and pinned Atlanta in deep. But the defense let them off the hook… big time. At the end of the game, the defense gave up 40 yards, picked off the ball to set Atlanta back at the 7, and then gave up another 69 yards. The defense gave up 109 yards and couldn’t get a single stop in the final drive of the game. Giving up a 3rd & 15 and a 3rd & 10 in the process. To me, that is why we lost. Until our secondary and pass rush coalesce, our stout run defense is going to be worthless. Until our secondary and pass rush appear, we’re going to continually give up end of half and end of game scores.

That’s a good point – even when this Defense holds it seems to give up most of the field position first.

we were consistently
-20 to -30 in the starting field position category. Seemed like they’d start on their 30, punt and we’d start on our 10. That’s -20 yards. Added up over the entirety of the game, you’re looking at over a 100 yard difference. That stat falls on defense AND return teams. While we’re celebrating not dropping punts, we’re still behind the 8 ball as far as returns go, both punt and KO returns. With our anemic offense, it’s a much tougher hill to climb with that kind of starting field position. I can’t seem to find the actual stat anywhere, but it seems pretty obvious that the 49ers start with abysmal field position for the vast majority of every game they’ve played.
Jimmy Raye was NOT our Future!
You should add one not-so-fun fact
The Niners cursed history playing in Atlanta. 1983, 1986, 1991, 1993, 1995. Now 2010. Ugh.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
you forgot last year too
"All during film, I'm calling him Bam-Bam, like from 'The Flintstones,' because he hits everything. He is the truth" - Chad Ochocinco on Patrick Willis
But you forgot to mention how many players named Smith and Davis are on the roster
That’s a fun fact.
Bring Briggs Back!!!
Here is a few...
27th in points allowed, 31st in points scored, 30th in TO ratio.
A few more:
3 TDs to 7 INTS.
The SF 49ers: It's FAIL, done better
