Why do players keep leaving?

Throughout this season we have had 3 players suddenly decide to quit: Michael Lewis, Glen Coffee, and Kentwan Balmer. Does anybody have any ideas why players might be leaving that hasn't been said? Could there be more than what has been said, possibly disagreements internally or management issues. I like what Singletary is doing and same with Jed York, but to me 3 players leaving randomly seems to be a lot. What are your opinions?

Secondly does anybody exactly know what happened to Kentwan Balmer?

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

Truthfully

If Moran Norris quit this week it would be more good news. The day a player with any upside quits is the day I will worry.

Exactly!

If things were so bad, would Willis and VD have resigned to new contracts? These “quitters” were being replaced and they wanted to pout about it so they asked to be released.

Just wait until mid season...

You will see the team mailing it in by then.

Sig bet on the final record?

What you wanna do.

Sing is no dumber or smarter a HC if Clements doesn’t fumble and/or Smith makes one less mistake yesterday. If this team had a better, not great just better, QB then they would be 3-1 and the perception of SIng and his staff would be different even though they are the same coaches doing the same thing. -SpurredOn...

What bignerd said

And why does anyone continue to include Coffee in the same category as the other guys? He quit/retired to leave football behind, not the Niners.

Balmer likely would’ve been cut at the end of pre-season. Lewis was almost released in the off-season and was playing his final year here.

You gotta bring ass to get ass.

by SpurredOn on Oct 4, 2010 3:23 PM PDT reply actions

1. Balmer was upset that he wasn’t a starter. And decided to quit because of it.
2. Coffee did not quit the team for the same reason as Balmer or Lewis. He followed his religion, which we should totally respect him for.
3. Lewis was also upset over the fact that he was told he would get less playing time. Which should of been expected. He did not act like a 9-year vet. He acted more like a 2008 1st round bust.

by mikeinsp on Oct 4, 2010 3:37 PM PDT reply actions

Coffe wasted our time and money. I don’t respect him for that.

Not really....

He was a third rounder got payed for his 1 year of service and training camp and that’s it, He didn’t have huge guranteed overall money, so not really

by D-9er on Oct 4, 2010 4:55 PM PDT up reply actions

so 3rd round draft pick no big deal?

gore
bowman
westbrook
reggie smith
snyder

all above are third round picks.
could have picked somebody who wanted to play football and helped our team

waste of pick, time and, money.

part of the reason later rounds get less money is they need time sometimes to develop to become nfl starters, coffee wasted that….

by HUNGRY HUNTER on Oct 5, 2010 9:52 AM PDT up reply actions

Completely disagree.

And no he didn’t waste our money, he only got what he played, 1 years worth.

Singletary military old school approach

Singletary style of coaching is outdated period!

Yep!

Tom Coughlin and the Giants beat the 18-0 Patriots to win the SB THREE years ago. Coughlin coached under Parcells and is as old school and military as they get.

Nice try.

Yeah that Superbowl was how many years ago?

Anyone could see that the DL won that bowl. Nothing to do with the HC when you can smash an Ol with 4 players.

WHY? YOU ASK?

It seems when a starting player is being told that more reps are going to be given to the back-up, that usually means the starter hasnt been doing his job up to the teams expectation, thus rather than go through the humiliation of being beat by your back-up, it seems to them, that its better to quit.
kinda like allot of 49er fans, when they are not winning, they want to quit being a fan.
ive been a fan for over 40 yrs! and have never quit! even when we sucked in the past.
coach, i support everything you do, and alex, im behind you all the way! the 49ers are MY team, through thick and thin, lose or win, im with you all the way!
so lets do it! beat the eagles, and start that winning streek and watch the the wimpy fans start coming back to write how much they love you!

Hey cool guy

Just because someone has complaints about a team doesn’t mean they’re any less a fan than you. Insanity is performing the same act over and over no matter if you know the outcome.. Alex Smith has had his best games against the Falcons and Saints this year… 275/1td/2int NO… 188/1td/2int… Eventually were going to have to stop appreciating his failures as achievements and admit changes need to be made. Yeah some of the numbers are circumstantial but 3td:7ints is garbage through and through.. When are we gonna demand a true QB? When are we gonna demand a true offense? When will our defense get the support it deserves? I love the niners, but I do not like Alex Smith, and Andrew Luck or Jake Locker should be on our radar this draft. 0-4? Come on guys

It could be worse... we could have Brett Favre....

Arguably one of the best QBs ever to play the game – and still in the NFL – currently has these stats:

597 Yds (League average is 557)
2 TDs (League average is 3.3)
6 INTs
QB Rating of 60.4 (League average is 85.6)

Compared to Smith –
920 Yds
3 TDs
7 INT
QB Rating of 66.1

Just sayin… there aren’t many options available.

KNBR?

I’m assuming that’s where you got this from.

My answer is Mike Singletary. The man walks around with a cross, claiming to be a man of faith, and yet he lies to his players and coaches in his staff. Such was the case with Michael Lewis and Jimmy Raye. I bet the same thing was true for Glen Coffee. He was probably told prior to this year’s draft that he’d be Gore’s fulltime backup, and then what happens? Singletary drafts Anthony Dixon, and Coffee is told by Singletary that he’d have to compete against this guy.

If none of this seems believable to you, just remind yourselves that he said Jimmy Raye would be the offensive coordinator for the rest of the season, and a few hours after decided to fire him. The guy has lost all credibility with his players and staff, as well as with fans and analysts around the country. That to me is the biggest reason why players have quit on him.

by Waiting4JoshMorgan on Oct 5, 2010 9:50 PM PDT reply actions

LOL, players have quit on him, that is hilarious. Excuse me WFJm

have you not noticed that he doesn’t let any info out in pressers. if you want to judge him off pressers, like a lot of other, I need to start a Mike Singletary presser thread, so whoever has not figured out that he doesn’t want to outlet any info about the team to the media, can leave their useless banter in that post alone. LMAO.

Coffee would have the job Westbrook currently occupies, thus backing up Gore ahead of Dixon. You may also notice that Coffee has zero interest in playing profession football, thus his not being on any team at the moment. You may also have noticed over the years that all players and coaches have the job they occupy until someone better comes along. That’s football and they are all aware of it. But keep on living through speculation instead of fact.

You gotta bring ass to get ass.

may be true

That may be true about Singletary. However I don’t have a problem with that, if that is true. The people we have lost have not been major, and would be replaced in the future.

I did not get this from anywhere. I was just talking about it with a friend and wanted to see what others said

by flyincow555 on Oct 6, 2010 9:38 AM PDT up reply actions

thank you for opening this discussion

no one believes in the coaching staff, or the organization or the quarterback. that’s why they are quitting. motivating people was supposed to be sing’s ONLY good point, and it seems that is total bs as well.

so why ’ o ’ why ’ o ’ WHY does anybody here still defend these dopes??

there is a serious problem with the organization. it has been growing since the departure of eddie d, and was only magnified after the departure of mariucci.

singletary was a stop gap in a terrible down-swing, and should NEVER have been given the permanent HC position. but can’t look back now, only forward soooo….

first things first – cut alex smith. do not bench him. cut him. wastes our money and time by keeping him. i keep hearing that david carr will be worse. i’m sorry, but that is simply not possible. doesn’t get lower than the bottom of the barrel.

if carr also does poorly, then try troy smith. i think nate davis is a laughable option, but i’d prefer as 3rd stringer on the field than having alex around at all.

if we finish with a losing record (gee, i wonder…) then FIRE MIKE SINGLETARY. i’d rather have another rebuilding year next year than a false hope at a playoff run with amateurs running the team that i love.
