Niners Nation Fantasy Football Support post week 5
By this point in the year your team should be pretty well defined as to who the main players are. You'll still want to scour the waiver wire for role players and favorable matchups, but I'm not one to advocate making major changes after week 5 in the season (since most FF seasons are almost half way done by this point).
Right now I'm 2-2, 0-4, and 3-2 (this league had a double header the second week).
On to some advice. If you grabbed Kyle Orton like I told you to, you'll want to bench him this week against the Ravens. The Ravens have the best passing defense in the league right now, giving up a paltry 120 yards per game in passing.
With Randy Moss being traded to Minnesota all the other receivers on the Patriots suddenly become extremely valuable in fantasy football, especially their tight ends. It really doesn't matter which one you grab, they'll both be great TE targets. The rumor mill has started regarding Deon Branch being traded back to the Patriots--if so you'll want to grab him too.
Regarding RBs I'm kinda screwed this week with my fantasy matchups in the ESPN league. I've got Ricky Williams and Leon Washington as my starters and they're both on bye weeks. My backup is Tim Hightower (ugh) and nobody else which means I've been scouring the waiver wire for replacements. Sadly the only options are backups who might get a few carries but probably not.
Mike Goodson of Carolina is not a bad option in deep leagues. He doesn't get many carries but he is used a bit in the passing game (30 to 50 yards receiving a game, but no TDs yet). Darren Sproles is not a bad option either, but he's too much of a boom or a bust to rely on week in and out. The Chargers are playing against the Raiders this week, so I think he'll have plenty of opportunities to score.
If you play in an IDP league you'll be wanting to scout linebackers as they can earn you more points than a starting QB can. Case in point--last week I need a LB to replace Barret Ruud (who had a bye week). I scoured the waiver wire and picked up LB James Anderson from Carolina. That week Peyton Manning (my starting QB) got me 24 points, which isn't bad by any means, but Anderson earned me 28 points.
Shaun Philips of SD had a breakout game last week earning 31 fantasy points for his owner
Jerod Mayo of NE has been consistently getting about 15 points a game
Paris Lenon of the Cardinals is earning his owners about 12 points a game.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

Some advice
in my Yahoo league (where I’m currently 0-4), I need to decide between these three WRs for my flex option
Devin Aromoshodu
Kenny Britt
Dwayne Bowe
I’m leaning towards Bowe but he’s just plain inconsistent. The Bears are playing Carolina so Cutler should have time to throw which means Aromoshodu should get touches, but will it be enough? The Titans are facing Dallas and I don’t know which defense will show up.
OTOH the Titans are likely to be down early which means they’ll be throwing to catchup, so maybe I should go with him.
Cutler is out.
I would stick with Bowe. Britt will get a heavy dose of Mike Jenkins (Who imo, is the most underrated CB in the league).

Bowe
He’s inconsistent but I’d say he’s got the most upside.
Also, I’ll get this to the front page probably around 2.

KC LOVES to throw to Bowe in the end zone...
And playing the Coilts they will most likely be paying from behind, so they wil need to pass the ball. Go Bowe.
If your league rewards heavier for TD’s, go Bowe without a doubt.
If your league rewards heavier for yards, go Aromoshodu or Bowe, I would still go Bowe.
Dauntlessly Matriculating
Some notes
Cutler is out so Aromoshodu might not get so many touches.
Kenny Britt is NOT the No.1 WR in TEN (Nate Washington is) and he’s actually fallen out of graces with the coaching staff. He’s not really a reliable guy.
Dwane Bowe may be super inconsistent but he’s on the only undefeated team in the NFL right now.
What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

Yeah I know Britt isn't the #1, which is why he's in my flex option
looks like the consensus is to start Bowe
It's ultimately up to you, though.

Who should I start in my flex?
My options are….
Mark Clayton (DET)
Randy Moss (NYJ)
Santana Moss (vsGB)
Brandon Lloyd (@BAL)
In my mind, I have narrowed it down to Clayton and R. Moss.
Clayton is playing the Lions, but I am afraid that Bradford will spread it out like he has been doing.
Moss isnt up to date with the playbook, but Brett Favre has been dying for a guy like Moss and I think Moss will get around 10-15 targets.

Moss
Moss should be your 100% starter all the time, not just used as a flex option and you know that Favre will be throwing to him
agree
He’s a guy you only bench if he’s not gonna play. Too much upside. I have both Randy and Santana in one league I’m in. Gotta love getting back the bye week.

Well he was my #2 WR, but then I traded for Andre Johnson.
I have Andre and Miles Austin in my WR slots.

Multiple Moss
Randy Moss has the most upside. Brandon Lloyd has put up big numbers. Santana Moss could struggle if the Redskins pound it on the ground again.

Lloyd is going to be pitted against the NFL's best pass-defense (by NFL.com stats)

I would like to see one game with Moss before starting him...
…but of your options he still looks best. I think Moss is going to want to make a statement, so he could really go off…
…or he could goose-egg. (no chemestry with farve)
Dauntlessly Matriculating
Both Moss-es are very good
Always go with your studs unless your other guy shave some VERY favorable matchups.

Flex position
I’ve got a choice between the following:
WR Mike Thomas (Jax)
RB John Kuhn (GB)
I actually cut Mike Sims-Walker for Thomas because Thomas has been the big receiver in Jax. Kuhn gets some touches but without touchdowns he really lacks a lot of value.
Well since I think that the Bills-Jags game will be close and feature a lot of points due to the erratic defensive play,
I would go with Mike Thomas. I think that Kuhn’s ceiling would be 7-8 points.

Kuhn
Part of Kuhn’s projection also depends on any touchdowns. He’s looking at probably 30-40 total yards at most. If he gets a touchdown great, if not he’s mostly useless.
by David Fucillo on Oct 9, 2010 2:00 PM PDT up reply actions
What helps more?
A likelyhood of getting 1-3 points from a few recieving yards by Thomas
or
A possibility of 6 points from a Kuhn TD?
Dauntlessly Matriculating
Thomas
1-3 points? He’s had 89, 43, 7 and 68 yards. So 8.9, 4.3, .7, 6.8 points.
Kuhn has had point totals of 7.5, 3.6, 5.1, 3.9. That first week was 15 yards and a touchdown. The week three total came from rushing and receiving yards (no receiving yards the rest of the time).
by David Fucillo on Oct 9, 2010 2:56 PM PDT up reply actions
You really have to find out who the goal-line back is in GB
Both Kuhn and Jackson get an equal amount of carries but only one will get the TDs.

Super Sleepers this week:
Fred Jackson of BUF stock is way up after Lynch got traded, not a total sleeper, but don’t overlook him.
Dexter McCluster of KC is the slot reciever, periodic runningback, and kick returner for the Chiefs. Against the Colts, McClusters role as a “dump-off” could be huge. If your league awards return yardage, the Colts will score alot, so there will be a lot of kicks. (Note, Javier Arenas shares KR duty, so DMC won’t get them all)
Danny Amendola of STL is similar to McCluster in his role as a kick returner. He is also a very close second to Clayton in targets from Sam Bradford.
Mike Bell PHI runningback. Even if McCoy does play, he won’t get a full load of carries, so Bell should get a few. If McCoy doesn’t go Bell will get a lot of touches with Kolb at the helm.
Dauntlessly Matriculating
Jackson
I wouldn’t exactly call Jackson a super sleeper. He was a hot waiver wire pick.

Mike Bell/Eagles RBs
We’re 49er fans, we should know exactly what’s going on here.
Andy Reid is going to attack the 49ers safeties non-stop this game. That’s why he’s not worried about playing or not playing McCoy.
Unless the Eagles blow out the 49ers early (and then need to chew clock) I doubt they run the ball more than 20 times (total).
If they do end up needing to chew clock, Mike Bell is going to be the guy doing it.

definitely first three
McCoy is a couple hits from getting knocked out of the game and Beanie Wells is up and down at this point.
MJD and Steven Jackson are guys you never bench. Hillis is questionable so keep an eye on his status tomorrow morning but he should play. He’s a guy who’s performed so well that I don’t think you take him out of your lineup for the foreseeable future.
by David Fucillo on Oct 9, 2010 3:22 PM PDT up reply actions
Hillis
Now, if Hillis were inactive tomorrow (not likely), I’d probably go with Beanie.
by David Fucillo on Oct 9, 2010 3:22 PM PDT up reply actions
I have the first 3 starting. The Hillis status is the big one.
by BucksForever on Oct 10, 2010 12:12 AM PDT up reply actions
I have McCoy too but I need to start him due to bye weeks (although my 4th back Forsett is useless now that SEA acquired Marshawn). But that may not be a bad thing- the injury is a looming issue but I think that since Kolb is playing, he’ll see a lot of receiving action on check downs. Touchdowns are obviously an issue if Bell snipes red zone carries but I guess we’ll see… Obviously start Hillis over McCoy though unless he is hurt.

How does this even happen?
You should play in deeper leagues, bro.
No fun when you have studs at every position.

I'd sit Spiller
until the Bills decide they actually want to use him. He’s only had 14 carries all year long—he should be getting 20 a game if the Bills want a return on that investment. That leaves you Spiller and Thomas.
I’d also take Owens and Austin—Owens won’t get 220 yards again, but he’ll be the favorite target for Palmer now that they’ve got a bit of rythm. The Dallas offense is clicking so that’s an easy choice there
Having trouble with my Defensive linemen in one of my leagues
I have Sederick Ellis and James Hall (I just dropped A. Carter do add Hall because Carter is no longer a starter).
Ellis has been playing quite well but he’s a DT and I’d rather have a DE starting.
What we've got here is a failure to communicate.
"I'm just like you, but 10 times better"
Hall
he’ll benefit from the attention that Chris Long will get. Long has been providing a ton of pressure this year. He’s only had one 1 sack, but he’s had 22 pressures and 3 hits. I think teams will start paying more attention to him and that should give Hall more room. Hall’s already had 4 sacks this year.
