Kyle Orton calling for flags?
I've had a full day to digest the game from yesterday, and I can still not get the feeling of disgust from the way Kyle Orton cried after every time he was touched. He himself and his crying negated would should have been 2 sacks for the very deserving Manny Lawson and Ahmad Brooks. Both were absolutely ridiculous. I would never wish hurt on a player, but I was very pleased when I believe Manny Lawson laid a good LEGAL hit on Orton on a big 3 down play and rattled his cage a bit. I never really saw Orton play before this, but I would never have respect for the way he plays.
HOWTHEYSCORED'S NOTE: It strikes me that this isn't a Kyle Orton problem so much as it is a league problem. Are quarterbacks like Orton or (famously) Brady doing this more and more in recent years just because it works, or are there deeper things going on beneath the surface?

What can you say, it apparently worked...
Same as when you see flop artists in the NBA, or the World Cup. It’s on the zebras not to get conned by that garbage. Just dreadful officiating. It seems like there’s been a lot of it going around this year for some reason.
Actually, I think that in both cases the flag was thrown before Orton even got off the ground. You see a lot of quarterbacks today waving their arms for flags, the same way you see a lot of quarterbacks today with cheat sheets on their arms, but it’s not really a case of the quarterbacks whining and getting what they want.
It’s a case of the referees being so fearful of the NFL’s “protect the QB” policies that they throw flags at non-hits without hesitation. Without even waiting for the QB to hit the ground first.
It’s not a quarterback problem. It’s a reffing problem. And, ultimately, a philosophical problem with the way the league has been run for the last decade and a half.

I think there may be some interesting room for discussion if we take a second-level look at the problem, which is why I’m leaving it up. The OP is specifically concerned with Kyle Orton’s theatrics on two specific plays, but there are much deeper issues embedded between the lines. You could easily replace Orton with Tom Brady and have the same post. Or a dozen other quarterbacks across the league.
Why have the quarterback post-sack theatrics become such a problem over the last 15 years? I’d be interested to see what comes of the discussion if people focus on this, or other similar second-level ideas that are entrenched between the lines of the OP.
But if it just turns into nothing but people calling Orton names, I might change my mind about all that….

However, in the interest of keeping this from turning into people just calling Orton names, I’ve made a few edits to the FanPost. I hope you don’t mind, D-9er. I didn’t change any of the points you made. I just changed the title and added my own note at the end. I think you’ll get more thoughtful responses this way.

Don't mind at all
I do see where you getting at, and it does seem to me that Brady is the golden child with a couple of penalties and rules pretty much named after him like the Tuck Brady Rule and the Don’t hit my shins rules after brady got injured.

What I found it funny that
Orton slapped his own helmet harder calling for a flag than any Niner that accidentally touched his helmet.

First one was ridiculous
Second one was closer to legitimate.
I was also surprised he would turn and complain for a penalty when he completely ducked into it and barely got hit. He seems to fold when he’s about to get hit the way some baseball players crunch at the plate to get a smaller strike zone.

This is a HUGE problem in the league, and it is very pitiful.
Not many QB’s are going through the medical issues of the NFL afterlife, and this is before the rules took place. My biggest issue is that ALL QB’s are not protected the same, and that makes these calls worse, who the F is Orton to get that bogus call? i will refer to the 3 man pile driver that Vince Young sustained, no fines were handed out, his coach wasn’t even irate about the play, nor did the commentators even muffle any words about a penalty. This league is so full of crap, yet I LOVE THIS GAME!! hard to continue loving it, the QB hits that are penalized are out of hand.

Remember the hit on Smith against oakland
He threw the ball finished his follow through then he got hit and no flag.

Big issue with the officials.
Big names like Manning and Brady get calls if so much as a finger brushes against them. It will eventually get bad enough that the league would have to do something.

The fair application of the rules drives me nuts
You’re dead right about that—the big name QBs will get the flags called far oftener than the QBs that nobody cares about.
The biggest problem with the officiating is that they’re not all on the same page as to what’s a penalty. It changes week to week based on the crew. There are a couple of things that the league can do to fix this.
1.) Get the officials together every week to review a select game. Each official marks down when they would throw a flag based on what they see. This is called calibrating and the more often they do it the closer they’ll get. Some variation will always happen, but they can get it to within 10%
2.) I’d also make the NFL refs a full-time position—right now these guys just do it part-time, so there’s not really an off-season training program. If the league shelled out a few million a year more they could hire all these guys full-time and then have them do nothing but watch film in the off-season to make sure they’re all on the same page when it comes to calling a penalty.
I’m not even sure if the refs do a conference call during the week to talk about plays or not—that’s the most basic thing they could do, and I doubt they even do that.
your so right on with that its scary
Should be part of a new CBA but probably won’t. Man wouldn’t be awesome to have all officials on the same page 90% of the time.By the rule now the officials called them both correct however common sense says let that go there was no intent. And someone has got to explain that to sing…the lifeless guy week 1 in seattle was to little but since all the yelling and arm waving just looks dumb.
How about some positive reinforcement. " Hey Manny tough call, get back in there and get gettin afte him". Which manny eventually did. Orton complained well manny blew his chest up later on completely legal then he ran him down and stripped him. Why on the sideline is Josh Morgan cooling sing down isnt the coach supposed to calm the players down?

hey smiley would you consider this one of manny's top games of his career.
I would and hope its just the begining but hes showing me he’s playing hmself into a nice new fair and reasonable deal. On the other hand dashon goldson is playing himself into being overpaid by some crappy team…Panthers (i know they beat us)

Yeah it's a good year for him
the extra weight he put on in the off-season helps, but I’m sure it’s got mroe to do with it being a contract year.
yeah $$$ is usually the motivator for these guys
that first sack well the “head slap” sack (garbage but illegal by the rule) His hand placement was perfect and he used his LONG arms to keep the tackle at bay while blowing by him. It was perfect technique on an outside speed rush.
Then on the strip he wasnt even pass rushing he actually had the RB in coverage, the RB stayed into block and as soon as he saw orton go he used that 4.4 speed to track him and instead of diving for the ankles you could see him time the chop and it was just text book perfect. Manny growing up realizing Ok I run 4.4 orton maybe 4.8 I know im gonna catch him let me make a play cause he’s not getting away! Geez that was perfect I wouldnt want to over pay but i hope manny wants to be a 9er and accepts whatever reasonable offer we give.

Compare it to last year, and remember he spent less time in man to man coverage last season.
