"Official NN QB Discussion FanPost" - Troy Smith: The answer has arrived

Fooch's Note: This will be our official QB discussion thread so we don't have a bunch of random FanPosts going up

With very little help from the Niners O-line, Troy Smith played another gutty game. He scrambled, threw on the run from both the right and left side, had THREE TDs negated by stupid penalties that wouldn't have affected the plays, and basically looked the way Alex Smith has NEVER looked in six years.

ZERO INTs.  Over 350 yards passing!!!!! A 116 passer rating!!!

Poise under a huge pass rush on almost every play. Chris Long playing out of his mind, eating Anthony Davis alive.

Add to this, fourteen 49er penalties for over 100 negative yards.

We've been looking for the answer at QB since Steve Young. Jeff Garcia had flashes of greatness but didn't have the arm strength Troy Smith has. This kid is the real deal. I think it's time we all get behind him and let him know how much we appreciate what he's done in just two games. (The first game with just 3 days of practice!)

Let's also give credit to Sam Bradford. That kid is also a gutty and physically intense young stud. The Rams are set at QB for years to come.

And Niners Nation, so are we!!!!!!

We need to let Troy Smith know that he's our guy before it's too late. SIGN HIM NOW, JED!! DON'T WAIT!

We saw two Heissman trophy winning QBs today, and they both played like it. If we had drafted Troy Smith last year and this was his second game as a starter, what would we think of him?????? We would be going out of our minds with joy, like they are about Bradford. So . . . how about some joy??? He's young, fast, smart, intense, gritty, and a winner wherever he's played.

Troy Smith is the man. OUR QBOTF!

Am I still rushing to judgment, Niners fans? If you still think so, WHO CARES? I'M SO PSYCHED. I KNEW THE KID WOULD COME BACK TODAY. I COULD FEEL IT.

When is the last time any of us have felt like that?

I hope he'll be starting for the Niners for a long long time to come.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

QB

I want him to keep starting but I’m fine not signing him at this point. There’s plenty of time to deal with that.

hope

I hope you are right. Troy looked great today and seemed to be able to rally his team and honestly think his abilitiy to make more time in the pocket was the key to success. However, as I just saw fooch say. Im not buying in completely yet. been let down by flashes of brilliance for a couple weeks. if he can rally the niners to beat the buccaneers and seriously get us back in it then ill jump on troy smith is our future bus.

Im buying Troy Smith right now. Without Anthony Davis in the game his stats would have been something like what.. 400 yards, 3 TDs, and a 34-17 win? 2 games, 2 wins, 0 turnovers.. his team plays FOR him and he just might save his coach’s job

by PartyStarter on Nov 14, 2010 5:15 PM PST reply actions

I'm calling you out

for this:

his team plays FOR him

Can’t say that sounds like anything more than rabid speculation.

Alright, I rescind that statement.. I think what i meant was that the team was fed up with Alex and just wanted someone else, no matter who it was, and the fact that he wins helps : /

by PartyStarter on Nov 14, 2010 5:23 PM PST up reply actions

fed up?

People can say what they want but it’s still just speculation. The team has been behind Smith publicly and we haven’t heard any rumblings about problems with Alex. If they were fed up stuff would probably have leaked out.

Gore said it too in the post game with him and Crabs.

Crabtree was trying to stay noncommittal, but Gore said, “I love it. His opening up downfield makes it easier for me. I love it”

by AKinferno on Nov 14, 2010 7:38 PM PST up reply actions

As Fooch said, that is simply speculation. I think this was less about the team being more or less behind one Smith or the other and more about Troy Smith performing at a very high level.

If Alex starts the Tampa game...

…then I’d say absolutely, 100% that Singletary would deserve to be fired STAT! And if that happens, and the Yorks don’t fire him, then they need to be ran out of SF by angry village people with burning torches.

Man, even I would have slapped Singletary upside the head if he started Alex this week. The only way Alex sees the field again is in a backup emergency role or if Troy absolutely falls flat on his face in a JTO kind of way.

Actually, without all the dumb offensive penalties

I think he would only have like 250 yards. I swear on that last TD drive, he got like 150 passing yards. Every time he drove the team down the field, they would get penalized to midfield.

by Sebaz49 on Nov 14, 2010 5:29 PM PST up reply actions

Okay, correction

He had 83 yards on the final drive. Though it started on the 24, and the Rams were hit with a 15 yard PI call. I say I’m almost buying. Give me wins the next 2 weeks against TB and AZ and I’ll be sold.

He may have had less passing yards, but he would have at least 3 TDs. I am pretty sure that would have made his passer rating even higher.

by AKinferno on Nov 14, 2010 7:40 PM PST up reply actions

I'm not saying

his day would have been worse without the penalties. I’ll take 250 yards and 3 TDs over 350 yards and 1 TD any day. I was just making a joke at how much added yardage he had to overcome because of dumb penalties.

why do people keep criticising anthony davis

long is one of the best defensive ends in the league this year. he did okay against him imo. davis has all the tools to be a franchise tackle… he’s only 21 years old….

I am pretty sure any DC would take that trade-off

1 guaranteed off sides penalty and 1 guaranteed sack. Sack could create a turn over and startle a QB possibly effecting his judgment and comfort in the pocket. Penalty gives 5 yards.

by AKinferno on Nov 17, 2010 2:32 PM PST up reply actions

Penalty gives 10 yards

but he is doing both in some games. He is a rookie though so we’ll see what happens. The kid is very young and very raw. I just hope his lateral movement gets better ’cause as of now he has been getting worked in that area.

Davis is a 21 year old rookie playing right tackle in the NFL. Give him some slack. There are going to bee good games, bad games and really bad games out of him. HE IS 21 YEARS OLD.

There will be more bad days before the good ones. But there will be plenty of good ones in the next 5 – 10 years.

heck yeah. hopefully we can address the real problem...

…which is stopping the other team’s QB. Pas rushing OLB (Robert Quinn), a stud DE to line up opposite Justin Smith (Bowers, Clayborne, Auburn DT), who can move inside on 4-man fronts, or a #1 CB like Paterson or Akumara (sp?)

Resign Lawson, let the safeties develop (even if Goldson walks), ILB will be fine, RB, TE, OL will be set… WR can use some new talent, and maybe our 2nd pick can address that spot unless Green is available for our first.

Troy Smith: You don't need to tell me twice.

This kid’s savvy, moxie, elusiveness, and arm strength are all breaths of fresh air for a team that hasn’t known the difference between up and down at quarterback for 7 years.

Explosive play after explosive play. You know what I think Troy could become? A smaller McNabb. And I’m referring to the good McNabb.

However, I’m not exactly on the QBOTF wagon simply because defenses have yet to be able to game plan against him. Will he be able to sustain success? The 0% on third downs is atrocious, and he seems to depend on being outside of the pocket. I’m very intrigued to see how this kid develops as a pocket passer. He did some good things in there, but he almost always did better outside of the pocket. Very Big Ben like, I suppose.

For instance: A huge percentage of the big plays were on rollouts, and i wonder how he will handle it when defenses game plan against that by pressuring from the outside. But either way, this was an excellent performance. It’s really great to see the 49ers have explosive plays. It will be fun to watch Troy develop.

This does not make me think any differently about the 49ers, though. He may be “the answer” at quarterback, but he certainly is not “the answer” to the 49ers plethora of problems. Anthony Davis and Chilo Rachal were again terrible and the team continues to make idiotic penalty after idiotic penalty (3 TD’s and an int called back?! Are you serious?!). I still think Singletary is a problem, the offensive line is a problem, and the pass coverage is a problem.

And for the record: This team will not make the playoffs, Troy Smith or not. They do far too many things to kill themselves, and even if Troy becomes Superman, he’s still only one guy.

Last note: Troy overcoming that called back amazing TD catch by Vernon on 3rd and 22 with a TD pass to Crabtree on 4th and 18 in the 4th quarter was fucking awesome. Talk about guts and resiliency.

Yup

Seems like I agree w/ your take on the 49ers a lot, but hey in my opinion you’re right a lot of the time. Troy Smith played well and deserves to keep starting, but let’s be patient and see what develops before we crown him. As for the Playoffs, I think this 49ers team has major problems that extend far beyond just the QB position and I just can’t see them winning enough games to take the division. Troy Smith is fun to watch and for now I’ll focus on that as the positive—he might not be the QB of the future but he’s definitely the QB of right now.

We would have if not for the penalties

Troy would have at least 3 TD passes (the one that counted was on the same drive as another, so I am only counting one of them). The Nate INT would have given us the ball on the 4ish. Having watched the game, do you think we wouldn’t have gotten in. Minus the penalties, we would have had 28 guaranteed, maybe as much as 38. Not to mention, Bradford the penalties that kept the Rams drives alive. Remove those and they likely wouldn’t have scored as much either.

We could be a contender, once guys stop making mistakes. I think yesterdays game may go a ways to correct that. When they watch the film today and see how much the penalties cost them.

…cautiously. If his stat line and play compares to today’s, I think he remains the starter. I definitely think he earned another game or two. If the Rams had scored on their first drive in OT, I would feel comfortable saying that Troy did everything he could to win the game and deserved another start.

I still think you draft the QBOTF next year and let him develop for a couple of years, though. My current mancrush is Kellen Moore, though I can see us picking up a Kaepernick, Stanzi, or even Newton to park on the bench for 2-3 years.

A 50 yeard line seat in the playoffs in 2011 with Troy starting at QB. But first we have to sign him! What’s your take on that? I don’t think we should wait. Too much of a gamble.

by Since79 on Nov 14, 2010 11:36 PM PST up reply actions

It won't happen

The way he is playing he won’t want to sign. Everyone knows the 49ers are one loss away from an overhaul so no one is signing a deal until we know which way the wind blows. I also said earlier this week you cannot rope a guy into a bad deal in the NFL. Even for some strange reason he did sign a contract now he’d hold out for more if he continues to play like this. I do think he’s viable starting QB, just don’t know how good yet. I’d like to sign him.

I liked what I saw in the Denver game. One play no one talked about was a short dump off pass to Gore where I thought he flashed real brilliance. He avoided a rusher, immediately figured out he had to scramble two steps to even get a passing lane than while running delivered a perfect 9 yard rope to Gore in traffic where Gore caught it in full stride. It was understated and perfect.

I disagree

I think Troy likes this team. He likes the play makers. He also doesn’t seem the greedy sort. If his interviews aren’t just lip service, he is honored to have an opportunity with a team with such legacy. I think a lot of that is pandering to the fans. But I truly believe he is humble. He recognizes the talent on the Offense and that the team is pretty young. I think he will do what it takes to stay, as long as he is the Starter.

It also allows him to seperate himself from the pressure

If he goes out every play, and just tries to execute it the best way he can. He doesn’t pay attention to the negativity going on around him, just strives to play well every down, the calls, the pressure… none of it matters.

Another analogy… bowling!
I bowl with my unit, I am above average. Noone likes being “anchor” cause of the pressure. So I always am. I don’t care about the score, or how well my teammates are bowling, everytime I go up, I focus on my swing and release. Whether I get a strike or not is irrelevant, how I executed is (did I hit my mark, was my speed good, did I hit the pocket). I walk away from strikes, disappointed, all the time. If it didn’t happen the way it wanted it to, I still have to work on it. Doesn’t matter if it’s my first, or 9th in a row, I concentrate on each ball.

That is how I see Troy. He is his own worse critic, cause he strives for excellence. Strives for perfection. When it happens, great, now duplicate it. If it doesn’t happen, analyze and try to correct it.

Unless some of you were born without eyeballs,

Troy did a great job today. I’m going postal if I hear one more excuse regarding Alex. Troy was signed in September, his first start was with less than a weeks notice, and this week he made all the plays he had to. In the event Troy Smith doesn’t pan out in the long run, Alex Smith is yesterdays news. anyone who says the Niners have a better chance of success with Alex at the helm is ignorant of anything about football and better go get their Dungeons and Dragons board out of the closet.

I don’t know how the team could justify going back to Alex. His ceiling is really low at this point — for all kinds of reasons…but the upshot remains the same: Troy Smith is the new starter.

A simple question

Who do you want to start at QB next week? If a poll was put up, I’d guess it a minimum of 10-1 in Troy’s favor. I think at this point, it’s week to week. At the end of this crazy season we can start talking about who we want signed and for how long.

But yeah, put me on the Troy Smith bandwagon. How many 20 yard plays did we have today? That was awesome!

You will come around some day

This whole Alex Smith experiment has helped me better identify QBs. In the end Nolan should never have picked Alex because he wasn’t a 1st round talent. Nolan gets further blame for not knowing what to do with a QB once he picked one. Neither of which is Alex’s fault.

Troy Smith played like a starting NFL QB. He made plays surrounded by havoc and dysfunction, the typical NFL operating environment. When you see it’s the norm and not exception you’ll understand Alex Smith like I do.

I was an Alex supporter the beginning of the year. Who else was there? The “give him a last chance, no excuses” thing was part of it. After all, he does have talent and skills. But they kept losing and then I learned that the 49ers and Colts O-Lines had very similar stats for 2009. I got it. I think Singletary still wants to teach Alex how to have confidence. Thankfully, he’s out of time.

How have I not "come around?" lol

I’m completely with Troy. That doesn’t mean I’m no longer a supporter of Alex, but I agree with all of your points: Alex never was a 1st round talent.

At that time, Alex (and Rodgers and Campbell) were all 2nd to 3rd round talents in a thin draft. Turns out Rodgers was able to take advantage of an amazing opportunity to grasp his potential and become an elite QB. I think both Smith and Campbell could be pretty good QBs with time in a good system and team (an opportunity like Rodgers had and we may be singing a different tune on those QBs), but that is neither here nor there.

I’m not even thinking twice about Alex with the way Troy has been playing. It’s been a long time coming to see such explosive play.

Has Alex even had 8 plays of over 20 yds the entire first half of the season?

The Alex crowd may be crazy but they’re not stupid (hopefully). If I recall the first game of our season, we converted 1 out of 15 on 3rd down, so Troy should get cut a little slack.

Troy

was able to be consistently clutch with the game on the line. Haven’t seen that in a while. I had a feeling in my gut that it would only take one offensive drive to win in OT. Certainly the PI call helped, but Troy deserved that after having 3 of his TDs annulled.

SIGN TROY SMITH NOW

WORST CASE: We have a great back up QB locked up for years.

But tell me who the #1 QB would be? What are our options in 2011? We can’t expect that a Sam Bradford is going to be there. Although I tell you, Colt McCoy looks great too! How great? How great are these young guys looking? As good as Troy Smith. That’s how good.

He’s young. He’s inexperienced. He’s learning every day. And he’s OURS. For God’s sake, let’s not blow this. If we don’t sign him and show our confidence in him he might look elsewhere.

Fooch / Bignerd — I know it would be extremely expensive, but could we franchise him if we had to? What’s the franchising rule money-wise? Top QB money? That would be crazy. So then: What are our options if we wait too long to sign him?

by Since79 on Nov 14, 2010 11:44 PM PST reply actions

Yes they could franchise him

As long as that rule is in the new, yet to be determined CBA. It’s not something the team can even think about now.

"Coach, it came down like a hail marry"

by bignerd on Nov 15, 2010 12:08 AM PST up reply actions

franchise tag

Franchising a QB this past offseason would’ve cost $16 million. Probably not gonna tag him with that.

Obviously he gains leverage the longer the season wears on. It sucks but there has to be a balance between throwing a bunch of money at him after two starts against the crappy Broncos and an injury riddled Rams defense. If the 49ers and Smith could work out a decent deal then maybe it’s worth it, but I understand why they want to wait.

by David Fucillo on Nov 15, 2010 12:10 AM PST up reply actions

Wow

Didn’t think it was that much. I dunno but the 49ers are in a mess right now if you start thinking about next season. If they don’t make the playoffs than need to hire a coach. The coach would have to produce his evaluations quickly while convincing any free agents he likes to remain aboard … all this with a lockout looming. A lockout might save their hides.

"Coach, it came down like a hail marry"

by bignerd on Nov 15, 2010 12:20 AM PST up reply actions

We can't franchise him

there’s no CBA right now. Plus the franchise tag for exclusive rights was $14.56 million. For exclusive rights it was $16 million. That was last year before Donovan’s new deal and Brady’s new deal. Peyton’s new deal will probably get done before we can announce a tag, pushing that number even higher.

I like what Troy has done, but no way is he worth even $15 million on a one year deal. He’s been a backup QB his entire career, I suspect he’d be happy with a 5 year deal worth $35 million or so, which would also be a fair deal based on his production.

by smileyman on Nov 15, 2010 6:54 PM PST up reply actions

he'll get 5 years at 30 imo.

I know he isn’t, but he has had 4 NFL starts. If we picked him up in the draft, and on his 3rd and 4th start he put up the stats he is now, you wouldn’t be excited?

I know he isn’t actually a rookie. He has had the advantage of watching how the NFL works on the sidelines. But truth is, he seems to play exactly the same here in the NFL as he did in college. And that is exciting. He was pretty awesome there. Hence receiving a record breaking Heisman selection.

Ok

I’ll buy that philosophy.

How about Michael Vick?

I really see some similarities in the two players. They both have a fearless gunslinger mentality, have real strong arms, and are mobile. I’m not arguing that Troy is as good as Vick, not even close, but I couldn’t help but notice the similarities. Also I think off the field they give off that quiet, determined vibe that makes the players around them want to play 110%

by SanFranciscoKnights on Nov 15, 2010 10:41 PM PST reply actions

I will say this . . .

I watched that Eagles game tonight and what I DID think to myself was — imagine if Mike Johnson called these exact first 15 plays from Scrimmage that he called for Vick (in reverse since Vick’s a lefty). I just think the play calls were insanely great, and perfect for a QB with a big arm, who could throw rolling out, and who can run. I am sure Troy Smith is no Mike Vick, but I do think Smith could run the same plays.

by Since79 on Nov 15, 2010 11:54 PM PST up reply actions

Further

You think Troy Smith actually knows how to find his 3rd or 4th reads on a play?

Good luck getting him to find his 2nd read. He stares down WR’s like the young Vick in Atlanta.

by youALREADYknow on Nov 16, 2010 6:13 AM PST up reply actions

He has played less than the youn Vick in Atlanta

Vick had been around a while before heading to the clink. He has had some good development along the way. Troy is young, he is also accurate with the long ball. I think he will be a great QB, but he needs time. But I tell you one thing, I would much rather start out with Troy Smith, that the Mike Vick all those years ago in Atlanta.

by AKinferno on Nov 16, 2010 6:29 AM PST up reply actions

I wouldn't rather have Smith than a young Vick

But for now, I’ll take Troy Smith as the starting QB on a losing football team. He could play himself into a starting role next season and that would also be a good thing for this football team.

Vick has taken teams on his back to postseason success even when he was a rather average quarterback. Every team he’s been a part of has transformed into an elite rushing attack due to the defenses reaction to him. Vick dictates entire defensive schemes and gameplans. I can assure you that Troy Smith doesn’t change a coordinator’s defensive scheme.

Troy Smith has the potential to be more of a McNabb kind of QB. He still doesn’t even have the arm of a McNabb, but that’s more of the kind of player he is. Michael Vick is a once-in-a-generation talent and it’s honestly unfair to Smith to compare him to that kind of raw talent.

It’s like comparing a current NBA prospect to LeBron James. You can’t make the comp because it’s far-fetched.

by youALREADYknow on Nov 16, 2010 6:38 AM PST up reply actions

I agree overall, but not with your support

I don’t like the comparisons, but I don’t know that Vick really achieved greatness. I think he is there now, I believe he will turn into a HoF QB, but I don’t think that would have been the case without the things he went through to get where he is today. I think Troy, with the right development and team around him, can get there too. But by a different path, and with a different style.

by AKinferno on Nov 16, 2010 6:27 PM PST up reply actions

Andy Reid and the Philadelphia coaching staff are the reason Vick is doing as wellas he is.

by What you talking bout Willis on Nov 16, 2010 11:41 AM PST up reply actions

I await evidence

Because there’s a huge difference in good passing velocity and elite velocity. IMO Troy has good velocity on this throws, but I don’t see him in the elite category there and especially not on the 50 yard throws.

Ok you wanted proof...

All I can give you is this link to the highlights in college that re-enforce my position. His arm strength has to be better now, with 3 years of NFL training. So -
Here!
The touchdowns are numbered so I’ll guide you through this.
Last night Vick threw that pass from the 3 and in the air to the 35 — 47 + 15 = 62
Damn nice throw. Floated down nice at the end too.

Now on the video of Troy – the second TD shown – :20 in – Troy throws from the 34 Ted catches on the 16 – 50 yards – Nice throw a little shorter but just as good of an arc on it.

On to the 5th TD listed at 1:12 in – Troy throws from his own 47 to the middle of the end zone to Brian Robinski – 4 yards into it. so 53 + 4 that’s a 57 yard throw. And it was every bit as good a throw as Vick made, no floating at all at the end.

Ok, last example, TD #13 – 2:36 in – He throws from his own 37 to the 8 for 55 yards in the air.

He is the REAL DEAL! 55 TDs at OSU vs 13 INTs.

by heckraiser on Nov 16, 2010 2:52 PM PST up reply actions

Thanks for the video

That’s borderline elite velocity on the throws you highlighted. If he can deliver those kind of throws consistently with that balance and throwing motion, then he’ll have a chance to be a great NFL QB.

Either way, I think we all agree that he’s the best downfield passer we’ve had in years. That’s the one thing that has stood out after just two games. His YPA is a reflection of that downfield mentality and ability.

NP...

You have to see the potential in this guy. He has only started 4 games and won 3 of them.

Stats in 4 games – get this:

  1. 136 attempts – 77 completions
  2. 5 TDs – 1 INT
  3. 1110 total yards passing
  4. 123 yards rushing in 36 attempts.
  5. 3 rushing touchdowns

Amazing stats considering and just to drive this home —

Colt McCoy – 4 starts, 99 att / 64 comps, 734 yards, 2 TD 2 INT; 48 rush yds / 16 att, 1 TD — Is he the Brown’s QBOTF?

Hilarious Video

Between the “super-ultra-epic” music and the suuuuuppppeeeeerrr slllloooooowwww moooottttiiiiooooonnnnnn on every single throw, I enjoyed the whole thing. I will say that on those throws, Troy has some nice accuracy. There are a couple of throws in particular where he really doesn’t seem set up to make a play and yet he sets his feet and suddenly whips the ball 50 yards downfield with ridiculous accuracy. It’ll be nice to see if he gets that chemistry with Ginn going again. I know that it seems like Troy makes every offensive player into a big-play threat, but Ginn has that potential more than anybody on the roster, to my mind.

TD #6 on the video...

….really shows what he can do when the protection breaks down. He drops back and the pocket collapses, so hes rolls right and the defense comes up to meet him. Suddenly rolls back to the left to juke a defender who’s about to get him and with 3 defenders bearing down on him, plants his feet on his own 47 and throws a rope to Brian Robinski mid-way in the end zone. It was a 57 yard throw that didn’t even float at the end. And the best part was that he threw it to a place where only Robinski could catch it. And if you watch the whole thing you’ll see that he knows where to put the ball so that the receiver has the highest percentage of catching it vs the defensive player. Once he gets the WR timings consistently down, look out! You guys got the steal of the decade here, proven leadership skills, tremendous intangibles, fast thinking on his feet, and as you have seen – he pushes the boundaries with the passing game. It’s like he wills the play to bounce his way.

PS: the music made me laugh too.

by heckraiser on Nov 17, 2010 3:58 PM PST up reply actions

Everyone keeps saying he's lucky

But his accuracy with positioning the ball, in my opinion, take luck out of it. Is it possible he could misjudge and throw an INT, of course. But does a high throw downfield have to be “:luck” or “a jumpball”… of course not. He is a good passer. Just does it different than the norm.

Michael Vick is the best player in the NFL right now

Unbelieve proformance by Michael Vick and the eagles last night . Michael Vick might be the best QB in the NFL this year . And i’m willing to go one step further and say he might be the best NFL player This year period ! Drew Brees probably was the best QB last year. Troy Smith is the best 49ers QB since Steve Young. One thing that all of these QB have in common, is that they are only 6ft. okay Steve Young is 6’1"but you see my point.

His statement was off but the premise is correct.

Garcia is also under 6 ft I believe, but Troy has a long way to go to be better than him. Size doesn’t have to matter as much as many believe believe it does, there are exceptions.

Garcia is listed as 6’1, actually.

But yeah, size is way overrated. And so is arm strength. Show me a guy with a quick release, good footwork, accuracy, the ability to read defenses and the ability to make the right decisions under pressure and I’ll show you a good QB (like Jeff Garcia).

Troy Smith

I think it may be that in the past we were spoiled with our QB situation (having two hall of famers back to back will do that) but everyone on this site is so quick to annoint our mediocre (at best) QB’s as our future.

Whether its Alex Smith, David Carr, Nate Davis, Troy Smith or whoever it is, we do not have a QB of the future on this team PERIOD. Troy Smith is making the best of his opportunity and I am verry happy this is taking place. The guy is a gamer and has some skills that we need. He moves around well and makes plays. He cuts it loose and allows the skill position players to make plays. See the jump balls to Crabtree. Smith is too cerebial to do this and it hurts the offense in general.

I think that Troy Smith will be and should be the starter for the rest of the season. Sorry Alex Smith but your time and your chances have run out. We all know you want to make things right in SF, but it is just not meant to be. I wish him well in his next stop, but he will never be what he was supposed to be in SF.

We need to address the QB situation in the offseason. I would like to see the front office make a run at getting Mike Vick and drafting a young QB in the draft. Then you keep Troy Smith and cut Carr, Alex and Nate Davis and start over. Then pick a speed WR with hands (not you ted ginn) to compliment Crabtree and we have a scary good offense with long term stability under center for the first time in a LONG time.

Vick

If Vick is not available (because he is tearing up the league) then we should go after Kolb.

Either one is a huge upgrade over what we have

is about as average as they come. He’s a checkdown machine who lives in the short game. Give him the Niners weapons and he’ll be a game manager at best. It would be worth trading a 2nd rounder, but nothing more.

by youALREADYknow on Nov 16, 2010 1:25 PM PST up reply actions

Well, this is where we part ways, until you come around

Troy Smith is our QBOTF, if we’re smart enough to sign him. I can see him winning play off games and being a big part of the reason why, and I can see him in a Super Bowl. Because he’s got the same magical something that those very few rare QBs, past and present, have.

We don’t have to compare him to Vick or Young or Garcia. He’s going to play his own game. But I think at some point other teams around the league are going to say, "Draft someone like Troy Smith. Big time arm, great on the run, great TD vs INT ratio, quick release, avoides the rush, and a great leader in the locker room. Humble but fierce. Read about his past . . how in the world do you come from a situation like that to this? He’s my guy. I’m excited to see him play. And when they sign him to a multi-year deal I’ll be the first to put my first in the air and buy playoff tix. Because that WILL happen. Even as soon as next year.

And I don’t think drafting a rookie is going to be a good substitute. Pick anyone out there available in the middle rounds or lower, and tell me you’d rather have him start next year vs Troy Smith, and I bet you’d have a very tough time telling me why.

there's no such thing as "it" or "magic"

there’s just people who can’t fully grasp everything that makes a quarterback succeed. I’m one of them, and so are you.

But I thought I would post it anyway. Here is highlights of what I think is Troy’s very last game before he got ill and missed his last chance to start at Baltimore. It may be pre-season and all, but it shows what he is capable of after working with the 1st team for a few weeks. To me it is spooky but funny because he reminds me of a mini-McNair. Click Here!

Huge upside and he’s good now. What the hell else can we possibly expect from a young kid making a total of 3 starts in the NFL. Give him a break! We should support him all the way. He’s going to be great. I pray its with the 49ers.

At this point, we need him more than he needs us.

by Since79 on Nov 16, 2010 11:25 PM PST up reply actions

I just love this attitude.... even if he just eventually ends up being a back up here:
"He leads by example and by giving you encouragement," said rookie tight end Nate Byham about teammate Troy Smith. "After one of the sacks in the game against St. Louis, he went up to the o-line and said, ‘We got this – don’t worry about it. Let it go and we’ll get them next time.’"

I can’t say for sure ‘cause I was never in the huddle, but Alex Smith’s body language lead me to believe that he never said these types of things. He seems like more of a blamer and point-the-finger at someone else type. He was good at masking the way he did it though. I saw through it.

2 points

1. Let’s be like our leader, Troy, and not start blaming Alex for blaming people, He’s a good kid, was under a lot of pressure, literally with all the sacks he took, and it’s water under the bridge. Barring injury let’s hope he never starts for us again.

2. Let’s be thankful our QBOTF is a great person with unusually great character. I can’t believe the stories about his past, the way he grew up, what he had to overcome, and the loyalty he’s had. And his interview that LA49er posted was eye-opening. How he sees himself now. His humility is not manufactured. He actually gets it. It’s been a long time since a 49er QB was a great leader as well as a great player. A LONG time.
